I always wondered if the GPS ON consumes battery, i am not talking about when it actually searches for satellites and tracks your position, i mean when it's in idle mode.. doing nothing.
I've tested having the GPS disabled for a day and there was no diference in battery use that I could see.
GPS ON only means that app with GPS permissions will be able to use GPS. Setting itself doesn't do anything to GPS.
It only drains battery if app starts using GPS and in that case it's probably what you want.

What the others said. I have mine on permenantly and I don't notice any extra drain. I keep it on for where's my droid - despite the fact it doesn't work indoors - where i'm sure it'll be 99% of the time.
Razr MAXX running ICS leak
I decided to let my battery run down to zero last night and let it charge while I sleep. I got to work this morning and just notice my battery is at 50%! The only change I really made yesterday was re-enabling smart actions, and setting a wifi connected trigger to turn data off. I'm thinking this may be the cause of the drain. Here are some screens.

I have no clue what "deleted_wake_locks" is. All my google results seem to point to wifi usage, and am thinking there is an issue with Smart Actions and Wifi might be the culprits.

There is an app that is not letting your wifi sleep.
Something is keeping your wifi on all the time and eating up your battery. Check out this app in the market and report back with the results, it's called "My Data Manager" and it will tell you which app or process is eating up all your wifi. Let me know what it says.

This might be helpful as well, this guy changed the DTIM interval on his router and it fixed his issue.

I've found on the stock rom, the Verizon wifi control app works well for turning wifi on and off by cellular location, ive heard tasker does this well also. Ive had no luck with smart actions. You also might want to go to settings, wireless, wifi settings, hit menu, then advanced settings, then change the sleep policy, if you have root you could also change the scan interval by editing the build.prop or using rom tool box. But do kill the wake lock, it not only keeps the wifi from sleeping, it also keeps your phone from going into its low power state

I am having a similar problem with my Razr (not MAXX). Just today i noticed the phone getting hot in my pocket. I then saw the battery was almost dead after only 4 hours unplugged and very little use. I recently rooted and flashed the clutch extreme version. I dont use wifi. I have autokilled everything useless, ive checked the running apps and nothing wierd seems to be running, in the battery usuage, after 4 hours unplugged "google services" and "android os" both had 33% of the battery use. But like i said i cant see what is draning it...any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Even im having some issue there's a process called Media which always is 92% and eats lot of battery.....so is there any way to kill this process?
If your phone is rooted my advice is to use ti backup and freeze the bloat ware the list of pre installed apps safe to freeze/uninstall can be found in the forum, when your phone reports "android os" "system" "media" its a general term that covers built in apps. The major culprit ive found is Verizon's back up apps, media is probably motocast, try mulling around in the settings and set the sync settings to as minimal as possible, also if you guys don't mind, I'm curious about this, when i first had batt life problems i ran voodoo ota and disabled root and forgot to re-enable root, with bloat and all i seemed to have better bat life, anyone want to test and see if its the same for them? Wondering if Verizon is being sneaky, and pulling carrier iq -esqe info from rooted stock

Never let your battery go down to zero. That is very bad for lithium batteries.
ok guys i found solution to media process.....Android media was trying to update it's music player and galery and since there were some media files which were too big in size and seems other files were corrupt so Media was trying to read them and thus eating up lot of clock cycles and thus draining battery. So once you identify which media file is causing the problem then media process get's minimal. About android OS process there's nothing we can do except to freeze some bloat.
Another way to disable media, though you have to do it every time you reboot, is to kill the process in running process in settings then applications. Mine does the same thing.

I was under the impression that the android os has a safety built in that keeps you from actually reaching 0, and the process of draining your phone until it shuts off, wiping battery stats in recovery, and charging too full while shut down was more to retrain the os to see 100% at a closer point to full and 0% at a lower safe point of shutdown... i know flashing roms not at 100% battery can muck up the scale, a good indicator is that your phone shuts off from low battery, you reboot and it reports a something like 20-30% battery

I would assume this is true for all android devices but at least for Razr I can assure you that it will turn off the phone before the battery gets below the critical voltage. That said it is almost always better to recharge well before it gets that low and as much as it is possible charge to full. I almost always charge over night.
This isn't your usual battery thread. My drain is MASSIVE. 25 percent in 2 hours just sitting with the screen locked. I am unlocked with TWRP. It started out of the blue, no new apps installed when it happened. I wiped cach/data and then had TWRP wipe the system partition. Then installed a clean ROM, Beans mostly stock ROM, the one I have been running since it came out with no problems. The massive battery drain continues. I have installed very few apps after flash, none of them are out of the ordinary. All data sync and app syn is off except Gmail.
The maps usage is weird, very high, I have gps turned off. But even the maps usage does not explain the rapid drop. Battery stats snapshot attached.
I am almost thinking my battery is just fried.

Have you checked to see if history is turned off? Maps will try to locate you based on cell signal if gps isnt available which would still drain your battery pretty fast if it was consistantly running in the background.
MAPS>>>SETTINGS>>>LOCATION SETTINGS
There you'll see options for location reporting, location sharing, location history, etc.

Search xda for better battery stats thread, download the apk and install. Maybe you're getting wakelocks somewhere causing it to drain. If that doesnt help maybe your battery just crapped out on you... o_0
And get Greenify it helps a ton especially with maps.

If u set ur automatic date and time and time zone off that will stop a lot of battery.
Thanks gang, BetterBatteryStats is awesome, and Greenify is looking pretty slick too.
Still struggling, but getting info. Battery is on order, really hope that is it but I am not hopeful. It really appears my Google Maps is out of control. During the screen shots below the phone was 95 percent just sitting. I did a little twitter, couple of emails. Never opened maps, location history, sharing and gps was off the whole time. Stand alone gps in locations was off, google and vz locations were on.
In four hours with only a little twitter/gmail it dropped 40 percent. For 3.5 hours of that time it was in deep sleep. I am not seeing any wakelock issues, that is attached. As is the 'current' stats from BetterBatteryStats.
The main battery stats from Android say Maps is using a good deal of this battery. I have uninstalled maps updates and cleared data on it. Maybe it is looking high because the battery is fu'bard. The new one wont be here for a few days because of the holidays.
I may be out of touch for a couple of days. Time to put some miles on the bike.

Good point, I did not. I have now...but since uninstalling map updates and clearing it's data it is not showing up in the battery stats at all. But I will Greenify it. Battery drop is a little better, but still massive.
My next test is to recharge it and let it sit in airplane mode.

I dont know if this would help....but with my last phone.. the gnex, I would go outside and get a solid gps lock then turn off gps. It would stop the constant searching for a lock and battery drain. If I never got that initial lock, even with gps off it would drain it but not really show up in a better battery stats as a problem....just had to do it every time phone was rebooted of course but not that much of a pain.

Yes I know. But in the gnex days even if I turned it off, without first getting a lock, it would be the cause of battery drain. I don't even dare to think I understand the why of it, only that it was the solution that everyone on the gnex xda forums offered.

Because even though the GPS is turned off the apps still doesn't realize that when running in background mode. Its like it just never made the connection to GPS being turned off and stopping searching.
I've read about this quite a bit and it is just something to do with how Sammy phones communicate with Maps.

Don't use greenify to solve your problem. Find the root issue first. Then use greenify if you want.
Try going to Maps in manage apps in settings and clear all data.
You could also uninstall maps and reinstall it. (Probably need to be rooted and use a something that will uninstall a system app like Rom Tool Box)

Anyone else having issues with battery life? I can go from 54% to 14% overnight, totally stock install with no added apps.
My HDX 8.9 only loses about 2% over night. Get a task killer and see what you can kill.
Fully recharged it, watched a movie for a few mins, then let it sit for four hours or so. It managed to go from 84% to 72%. For some reason while it does stay connected to my wifi, it keeps losing internet connectivity.
I got a taskkiller app and killed a few processes, I don't believe it should be necessary though. I wonder if I got a dud since no one else seems to be reporting the same issue.

Totally stock install, to my knowledge I can't uninstall any of the preinstalled stuff. The battery issues persist though reboot so if it's a stock app with some issue there's not much I can do about it at this time.
On a possibly related note I've been having issues with internet connectivity, after my fire is inactive for some period of time it loses connection to the internet but stays connected to wifi. I have to toggle the wifi to get the data working again.
I finally decided to just get them to ship me a replacement, should hopefully solve all of my issues without me having to spend days trying to diagnose any problems with my limited access.

I have discovered that the location services can cause this exact issue due to constant polling. This issue is worsened with the additional use of the Google Android location services. Make sure you do not have the Location setting turned on in the "Wireless" tab of settings.
This issue only occurs intermittently, but when it does, it continues until location services are disabled & the device is restarted.

It wasn't enabled, I got my new kindle today though and just unboxed it. Hopefully it's resolved now.
Edit: Nope, same issue. When I got it, I turned it on, went though the tutorial, made sure location wasn't on, then turned off the screen and sat it on my desk. Six hours later I'm down 16%. Guess it's not as bad as before, but it's still not great. I wish amazon had better battery stats.

Nope nothing, I can't think of any reason why two separate devices would act this way when no one else is having the same issue.
From when I edited my previous post to now, it's gone down 33%. (Which is a little over 2% per hour)
Edit: I installed better battery stats from an APK (didn't realize it would let me do this), so hopefully now I can see what's eating up the battery.
Edit 2: Something called msm_hsic_host is what's draining my battery. Apparently that has something to do with a cellular modem, which I find odd since my device is wifi only.
Edit 3: Installed DS Battery Saver, set it to slumber (If screen's off, data's off), problem solved.
Hey, I've been using stock 4.1.2+ExperiencedKernel for a long time, it always worked great, but a few days ago I installed an icon pack for KKLauncher, and since then my battery consumption got really bad, around 15-20% per hour when the display is off! I've tried deleting the icon pack, but it's the same, I'm even checking BetterBatteryStats for details, but it doesn't show anything suspicious, although I'm using the app for the first time, so maybe I overlooked something. I have also reflashed the rom+kernel with full wipe, but no luck. Can anyone tell me what can cause this mess, or what should I upload from BetterBatteryStats for someone to check the problem? Thanks in advance.
btw it goes to deep sleep well, so it's not an app that wakes it up constantly (I use greenify too). also the phone itself is very hot, don't know if it's just the battery or the whole thing... but the phone functions correctly.

If you don't have any wakelocks keeping it awake and you've reflashed the ROM, kernel and did a full wipe and the battery drain still exists... Then I'd say your battery is failing, especially if it's getting hot. My L9 never gets hot, even under heavy use.
The only other thing you could really try is flashing back to stock and see if the problem is still there... Really though, I'm pretty sure it's your battery.

I thought you meant that the battery was getting hot. The last time I had a battery go out, it was getting hot and it was draining fast. Shortly after that it wouldn't take a charge anymore.
It is possible that it's a hardware issue. WiFi, GPS or the camera could cause it to get hot also.
You can also try and boot the phone into "Safe Mode" and run it like that for a day or two and see if the problem still exists. If it problem disappears while in Safe Mode then you have a rogue app or something that's causing the issue.
Then to narrow it down you could try downloading Wakelock Detector and see if something is keeping it awake, making it hot and drain the battery.
Monitor it with Better Battery Stats and Wake lock Detector. Post some screen shots of BBS and Wakelock Detector here too. That way we can see if something is going on.
This is one of those issues that will take a process of elimination to figure out.

I've been using BBS, it shows that the phone is in deep sleep in most of its off time, no app wakes it up. Also, wifi seems to lose its signal very often, even though it's strong (there wasn't any problem with that before).
I'm using the phone now without SD and SIM cards, it doesn't seem to be that hot than it used to, but charging and draining are still very weak. I'm gonna try safe mode as you suggested, and also using the phone without wifi turned on, if that is the issue. Thanks for your tips.
So, the phone cooled down after I turned off wifi, then I rebooted to safe mode, and it became hot once again, but after the media scanning, it cooled down once again. So I guess it may be the CPU? I've been trying to get a picture of the phone's circuit board with no luck, because the phone is only warm in the upper 1/3, the other parts seem to be cooled down all the time.
I'm gonna return it to T-Mobile on Monday, hopefully they won't notice the unlocked bootloader.

Yeah it might be the CPU. Also if it's dropping and/or scanning a lot for WiFi, then it will definitely get hot and kill the battery quickly.
I don't think that T-Mobile will notice that it's unlocked. As long as you flash back to stock ROM before taking it in, then they probably won't notice. They would have to be purposely looking for it to be unlocked.
You might want to flash back to stock anyway and see if the problem is still there... It very well could be a ROM/kernel issue causing the problem.
