Has anyone messed around with engineering mode for our phone? I've been going through it and finding interesting sounding things that I'm too much of a noob to fully understand. It'd be interesting if there were any tweaks related to connectivity or anything that could help with battery life.

[ROM-MOD]Radio Voltage Regulator (increase signal/save battery)
Hi all!
I am looking for a mod or software that will allow me to regulate the voltage amount to my Raphael's radio.
The idea:
- By increasing the voltage I increase reception/signal but use battery more (good for emergencies and areas with bad signal).
- By reducing the voltage in an area with great reception/signal I save battery power.
I am technically on the verge of developing it myself. I just wanted to check if there already is one before I do.
Also, any information that can help me get closer would be greatly appreciated.
great Idea, but it should be automaticly reactink by checking the reception, or when a intrnrt connection is build. otherwise it's not going to be much helpfull.
s.
Afaik, that should already be done by the phone itself...
@s.zamani
Yes an automatic mode is definably a must, I agree.
@Rumpel78
If it did, then why do I have areas with no signal or lost calls? and even if it did, I want to test how far past the default variable I can go. But I don't believe it does.
Can anyone confirm this?
Or point me in the right direction to read documentation on this?
With my old nokia phone battery drain was much higher with bad reception than within areas with good reception.
And at work we use Siemens and Telit GSM-Terminals where you can measure the supply-current is much higher if the reception is low.
I must check if this also applies to windows phones - but i cant think of a reason why not.
I will look into this.
@Rumpel78
Thanks for looking into that, that data will help.
Think of it like this though. Even if phones adjust power distribution to radio automatically... Manufacturers know (for example) that their radio can't take more than 1.2v (lets say). So to be safe they set a cap variance at 1.0v. Now obviously when its running at cap it will drain the battery quicker. However, there are times when even that is not enough and I can be stuck with whats known as 'no signal' or even get a 'dropped call'.
In other words, we would be "overclocking" the radio.
How would it be beneficial? while there are plenty reasons for one to have such control over their radio I will go with the obvious ones. Emergencies. What if I am stuck in an elevator with no emergency response? or am in an underground surgery facility and I want to text my family that a loved one came out of the surgery well?
Normally I would be in the hands of g-d or would have to wait until I surfaced and possibly even exited the hospital (respectively to the situation aforementioned)
It just happens to be in my life that flawless communications plays a big role. This is the main reason I am pursuing this. Even if minute, this type of control can come in handy if not life saving for some people.
This is assuming phones (and in-particular the raphael models) already are adjusting power distribution to radio based on a min and max (cap) variance.
If they aren't, this is a major improvement.
If they are this is a situational improvement, used deliberately in particular situations where, normally, communications would not be available.
I'm not trying to overcome cellphone signal jammers, but wouldn't it be nice if you could try?
Also I can think of another situation. Many countries enforce their own electronics safety policy.
So going along with my last post. What if the radio could take as much as 1.5v but was set at a cap of 1.0v because of electronic security policies of the country we live in?
In a situation of emergency, i don't care much for those policies and will use speaker-phone/headset for my safety.
This is so true that when we really need a good reception or even good enough signal to establish connection. Just once of your life time, it can be beneficial.

By that definition, I would like to specifically clarify, that I mean the part of the Radio that handles reception/signal and GPS. I see no need in adjusting voltage to sound or camera so unless someone specifically asks for it, that type of control will not be embedded.
P.S. Anyone who has knowledge in this field and can help me with the development please send me a PM as, at this point, I could use all the help I can get.
Anyone know whats the best forum board for help with new development?

How about...
Windows Mobile Software Development
hm..
as others have already said... this is already done by the phone's internal hardware, and the radio ROM. maybe even some on the windows mobile side.
Also, based on the sort of questions you are asking, adjust radio amp voltage sounds like a bad place to start learning how to do windows app development...
This is really not needed. The best solutgion for the outer 3G ranges where the device keeps pinging. looking, for 3G service & hence burning through the battery faster is to turn off 3G in the Comm Manager. That way it is forced to use Edge or GPRS & won't bother at all looking for 3G. There is no way to amplify the device reception (short of an antennae in the car/home or integrated into a cowboy hat), So forget about that.
Just go into the Comm Manager or the Settings & simply select to not use 3G in or to use only GPRS/Edge in Network Settings. Either way will save battery & you don't really need 3G unless you are surfing heavy sites or downloading/uploading files.
Any guides detailing differences in ROMs and Rooting options?
I'd like to know if upgrading to certain ROMs will end up in loss of phone
functionality, such as the camera.
Looking for best battery saving options too.

Basically the difference among ROMS are its additional functionalities.
-Lesser battery consumption
-Better performance whether it will be for gaming or for surfing the net, or simply for better phone usage.
-Multitiouch features ( On development )
-Uniqueness
Others correct me if I'm wrong. Ofcourse the basics of a phone is still every developers' priority.
As for rooting - I did use SuperOnClick. Basically this is the first step in order for you to customize your phone.
Yes. some roms still have bugs that needs to be fixed. Although in my experience I use custom roms made by owain94 and slade87 and everything works perfectly on my phone.
It made a huge difference with regards to battery drainage. With my phone on standby (6hrs when I'm asleep) it only drained 15 - 25% bat. I'll try to give you a an update regards to battery drainage when I charge my phone. (my bat is still at 75%). IDK if this experience is like everyone else's but imo that's whats happening to mine though.
Do some research. Try reading these:

You should do fine when you carefully analyze and read instructions first before applying necessary changes to your phone.
Don't forget to thank those XDA developers who made customizing our phone possible.
Hi All,
I am new user to Android. I liked the phone, but having issues with battery.
I set my brightness to 0, no wifi, no GPS and blue tooth connected only when I am calling.
I heard by rooting i will get more battery life. And I dont exactly what is rooting.
Its all new to me.. I am hearing lot of root, ginger break, ginger bread etc.. i cannot understand anything.
Is there any link, which is easy to understand for a new comer like me.
and Please suggest me how to root my Atrix4.

This is Everything to do with atrix it also has a NOOB guide for you.
And No rooting your phone wont do anything for battery life unless you
are using mods and/or removing the bloatware. ( All ATT apps ).
Please which ever guides you read make sure you re read them until
you know. Dont wanna be bricking your phone and making it worthless.
I have a few very easy and simple suggestions.
The atrix is my first phone as well.
The first thing you need to do is drain your battery until it shuts itself down, then charge it overnight. Do this for the next few days. This will break your battery in and increase its lifespan A LOT. After you do it for a few days don't fully drain it before a charge. Just charge it however you want from then on.
Also, download an app called "Juicedefender free" from the android market. Open it up, and put it to the "balanced" setting. This will increase your battery life by about 70%.
Using these steps, now at the end of a day, I usually have 40-50% battery left.
You can also go into your settings and go into battery manager. There you can select your battery mode of choice.
Cheers, good luck!
Thanks to both of you..
Np , hope everything goes well if you need help you can always ask ether me
or another guy who is willing to help will.
Hi guys,
I was going to post in the Lulz kernal thread, but it won't let me, as I have less than 10 posts (I'm not THAT noob, dammit! I just lurk...). So can anyone here answer my question?
I've noticed a lot of modified kernals seem to disable many types of logging (eg, Logcat) in order to improve battery life and improve responsiveness.
I've checked the thread, and it mentions nothing about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118918
I do like the kernal as it supports the Tegrak utility which I think is pretty good (manual UV takes more work, but I feel I'll get more out of it in the long run ), so I'm not sure about changing to another kernal...
However, I was thinking, how hard is it to disable logging myself? I really don't see the need for it to be enabled. Is there any easy(ish) to read information on it anywhere? And would it gain me much doing it? I do have a fair amount of AOS bug in my battery stats, and I hear this helps with it.
Thanks very much!
Recently found my old Amaze . Unlocked bootloader again and rooted as it was already S-OFF it it makes a difference. Wanting to turn it into a music/wifi only device.
Has anyone else done this and maintained decent battery life?
Haven't been on this sub for a good while, but do recognize some of the development still going on for this device. Trying to find a stable ROM that is small in size with not a lot of extra bloat that has good battery life to use the Amaze for music/wifi.
Any suggestions or experience with? Or any configuration ideas welcome.
Thanks

I say install any rom you like then install poweramp your good to go
what i mean by this ?
1st ... ICS roms are very stable great battery life also
2nd ... ICS roms can use wifi to make wifi calling if your into that
3rd ... Or download the newest rom and see how that works
4th .... Trade in you amaze for a ipad touch
After tinkering with phone for almost two weeks(not constantly), I keep running into the same problem on different ROMs. Phone Radio and/or any other phone service related program/app keeps draining the battery rather quickly. Even if i have Airplane mode on or have everything turned off(including WiFi) and let it just idle, it still is the top apps/services eating away at the battery.
I have even tried freezing/uninstalling all phone related apps, but with no prevail. Also Used the *#*#4636#*#* to go into the phone settings and turn radio off, it still will be at the top of the list on using the most battery. I have most Google account syncs turned off and even have disabled location.
Is there something I am missing or?
