Is there a way to move files from one directory to another on the same external SD card without copying the file? Windows/OSX moves files with a simple directory change, but android always seems to copy. It wouldn't normally be an issue, but recently I've corrupted a few large video files when moving from one folder to another. Just wondering if there is a workaround?

Forum was getting a little bogged down with a few issues so I thought I would start a problem specific thread. I have transferred files (music and movies) to my 16gb micro SD. All the music is there, but every mp4 and avi file is gone. The only solution I can think of is to insert the card when I need it and removing when done. I love this tablet and the vegan beta 4 rocks. Much thanks to the hard work. I was curious if anyone has a solution to the sd card issue? It seems like it was happening on multiple roms.
Seems videos are lost during SD card scanning. What worked for me was create a ". nomedia" file in the root directory of sdcard2. Haven't lost any since.
Will try that. Thanks.

I tried creating the .nomedia file and it seems to have done the trick. My video files are not disappearing anymore. Thanks!

Question to Viewsonic:
Is this by design or is it just another problem?
I've got the same problem on my Htc Flyer.
How have I to create this file ?
has to be the name just like "aa.nomedia" ? Did I understand well ?

No, it's actually a file named ".nomedia" nothing else. You can use notepad++ on your PC to create it, or a file explorer on the device. You don't need any text in the file at all, just a blank file called .nomedia
Most instructions state to put it on the root of the SD card, but I took it an extra step and put it in every directory including the root...just to be safe, ya know
i put a 32 gb micro card in the tab after loading about 2gb of music on it, it found the card then only recognized about ten files while either deleting or replacing the remaining files with numbered files that come up as unreadable format. i have placed a folder labeled no media but that seems not to work. even sent it back to viewsonic and they reset it to factory ( i did that also) sent it back and it stil does it . any suggestions would be appreciated. its a stock gtab no mods
This is a known issue on some mods, although I didn't know stock also suffered from this problem. You need to create a file named ".nomedia" and place it in either the root directory, or the directory where you store your media. Note that you cannot create this file in Windows. Mac or linux may be able to, but the easiest way is to use a file explorer like ES File explorer, which has the ability to create a file.
thanks for the tip
i will give it a try and let you know what happened,
nope not working
tried as you advised , made a .nomedia file reloaded the sd card put it in wanting the world and the same thing happened. all but a few files were left and then there were 20 to 30 numbered files where there used to be mp3 folders.plus if i select one of these files it says unable to open this file type
On my new M8 I put the SD card I used in my galaxy s4 in and it doesn't seem to like several of the folders. The new phone will recognize some files but on other files it has a dot and then a number at the end and it won't show me the contents or allow those files to be accessible. So the mp3's better in those files don't show up in the player. This seems really strange to me that it doesn't read files that are just fine on the card. Can someone help me please.
by the way I had to download an manager in order to even see the files and folders on the phone, is there no folder navigation option built-in to this phone?
copy off sdcard to computer and format the sdcard and create new folders, why would it seem strange samsung uses a different file structure than htc....

there is no built in file explorer, you can download es or root explorer but they may not be able to write to the sd card without root (i'm not sure as my phone is rooted...)
Thanks guys. I followed your recommendation and copied what I needed. Reformatted. Then added files. Seems good now.
Hi,
I bought a z2 yesterday. formatted my old 16gb microsdcard to use in my z2. I can see the folders and the phone can read my card. So i tried to download a file directly to my external card but it showed me a error lik "no valdi folder" or something like that. After i tried to create a new folder in my card using a file explorer but it gives me a error "operation stopped". Any idea why and any solution?

On Android KitKat applications aren't allowed to modify the files on the SDcard. They are only allowed to place files in their own folders on the SDcard (/SDCard/Android/data/app_name if I remember correctly).
You can fix this only by gaining root access and modifying build.prop.

Uch, I was wrong about the build.pro. Actually you need to modify "/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml".
Here is some reference:
http://jrummy-apps.com/fix-sdcard-on-kitkat/
Root access is essential.
You can create a folder if you use the file explorer that came pre installed on the z2, all downloads go to internal storage but can be moved to sd card with 'file commander' this is the only app that can create and move folders to the sd card, apps such as astro and es explorer no longer have the permission.
Maybe I misunderstand the problem, but PocketCast can download and save the files to SD card without any problem. So, if this one can...
Yes PocketCast CAN write to the SD card, but only in its own folder, not everywhere. And it could write to a public folder (there are some defined in the Android SDK).
See Jackos post above...
Only software that is installed as system software may modify the files on the SDcard outside their personal folder. For example the build-in file manager.
File Commander (The built in file manager) is able to read and write to external SD. Use it instead of any other third party file manager app.
I recently got a refurbished A50 and happy for most part despite few design issues I have with the GUI.
But the one problem that is an issue is that I am not able to rename any images in gallery. I can rename them in file manager but that is a real pain.
I tried several different galleries and the same happens in all of them.
The error is:
An error occurred: java.lang.NullPointerException:authority
Any ideas on why and how to fix?
Thanks much.
In another forum was suggested that since images on SD card I need to set permissions to rename on that card. But no indication how to go about that.
The typical permissions settings for the gallery apps already say they have all storage permissions and I see nothing specific to location such as internal vs sdcard?
Is there some other place to grant read/write permissions to rename files on SD Card? One would think that if Gallery could not alter names it also could not move images or even create new folders on the SD Card?
