OTA Update question (Zara-CL-VirginMobile) - HTC Desire 601

I was looking for some knowledge, I am currently running the clockwork senseless rom 4.2.2, I'm s-off bootloader is unlocked I'm wondering if I can use the Kit-Kat OTA update that I keep getting in my notifications area. And if I do will it work since I am s-off with unlocked bootloader and rooted? I would like to update to Kit-Kat as most of the custom Roms for this device require Kit-Kat firmware and the 2.22.0.0 hboot . Will the ota erase any of my internal data or SD card data, or change my s-off status or my twrp recovery? Thanks in advance for any help i appreciate it!

To install an OTA update, you must have the stock recovery installed on your phone and your /system partition (your rom) must be 100% stock.
Better to backup your files and start from scratch (flash the latest VM ruu on your phone then flash your desired custom rom)

Rezound OTA or ICS Sense ROM?

I was going to install an ICS Sense ROM on my Rezound, but i just got a message that the OTA is downloading.
I'm rooted. I'm going to do S-Off soon as I can.
Should I get S-Off before installing the OTA?
Will the OTA break root?
Will the OTA break S-Off?
Are there advantages to using an ICS Sense ROM instead of the OTA? Vice versa?
Thanks!
I would s-off before you accept ota. It will not effect s-off. Installing an ics Rom wild give you better performance as well as better battery life

I was in your exact position so I can help out here.
Note that before you accept the OTA you will need to flash the stock GB recovery, as that's how the OTA installs. Without it the OTA will fail. Also make sure you're 'locked' if you don't end up S-OFFing before the OTA. The S-OFF procedure automatically "locks" your bootloader even though you of course have full access.
I S-OFF'd before OTA just because the S-OFF method has been known to work with GB firmware. Others have reported the .5 ControlBear version on the unlimited.io website also works with the .22 OTA release so that's your call. IMO yes do it before, but it will likely work either way.
-Root will definitely break. Easy to fix: you just google Superuser and flash the latest ARM version.
-The OTA will not break S-OFF. HOWEVER, it will completely overwrite your "modded" hboot with its own secured version. To fix this, grab the ICS hboot from the unlimited.io website and flash it. This is necessary if you want to flash a custom recovery again.
-OTA advantages: support from VZW and probably *slightly* less bugs than a custom ROM. However you of course have to deal with the bloat. It's your call.
Ok, first step...
Where do I get the stock GB recovery?
And i guess i have to "flash" using my computer, not from within Amon?
So, all of the "flashing" you're talking about had to take place using my computer, not from within Amon?
Sorry I'm such a noob.
Anyone? I can't find the stock GB recovery for the Rezound... Anyone know where I can get it?
And do I flash it the same way I flashed AR recovery?

This is from a write up Scotty did a while back. It's worked for me in the past.
Rename to PH98IMG.zip and place on root of SD card and flash in hboot.
Or extract the recovery.img from that zip and flash in fastboot with the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Thanks!
And now to get root back once I install the ICS OTA...
Do I simply flash the latest Superuser the same way that I flashed the recovery? ie: Do I rename it PH98IMG.zip and flash it in hboot?
You guys are awesome...

The superuser zip you would flash in recovery not hboot. After you do the ota update you might have to re flash your recovery first though

Gottcha... So now I'm confused because the link for superSU in Scotty's n00b-friendly guide takes me here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
And the only link for superSU is to the Android market... How do I get the zip for superSU so that I can flash it in recovery?

It's right there as CWM SuperSU v0.94
Thanks... It's confusing because it says CWM in the name, but I suppose that really just means you can install it with a custom recovery, not necessarily CWM.
CWM really screwed up charging on my phone before, so I was leary of it.
Got it rooted and ready to go now. Thanks!

Unable to Update EVO V 3D 4G

Hi there, about late December 2012, I got a System Update from HTC on my rooted Evo V ICS. I tried to update a few times with TEAMWIN, but I keep getting this error:
Code:

Installation Aborted.
Is there a fix for this, and what is this update about?
Thanks!

It sounds like you are rooted and S-ON. If you are S-OFF this OTA installation procedure would be a little different.
You can't install the OTA with a custom recovery like TWRP installed. It also patches the stock ROM so it's best to relock your bootloader and flash the RUU if you want to get apply OTA updates, then htcdev unlock, flash a custom recovery and root again.
The OTA update includes firmware that fixes connection and texting problems, and patches to the stock ROM.

Thanks for the response.
I'm guessing I can use this thread for assistance, or is there a better alternative?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
Also, once I've rooted back after all this, do I have to go through these steps again for any future OTA Update?

Yes, you can use that thread through Step2 is you don't care about S-OFF, but that would make things a lot easier for you in the future. When you are S-OFF you can flash the RUU and do the OTA without unlocking the bootloader, then flash a custom hboot and recovery and you are back to where you want to be.
Make sure to download and install the OTA between Step1 and Step2 since once you flash a custom recovery it will not install properly.

[Q]Detailed Instrucions on how to update rooted EVO 4G LTE (S-ON) to 3.16.651.3 OTA

Hi. I currently have a Rooted EVO 4G LTE, HBOOT 2.09 with JEWEL S-ON. Its running software version 3.15.651.16 on android 4.1.1. Im trying to download the OTA that came out january 31st, Without breaking my precious root. Ive heard the horror stories about rooted folks tryin to download the OTA, with their touch-screen enabled TWRP recoveries untouchable and their volume buttons unusable and i dont wana take any chances whatsoever with this particular OTA. What is the best way to download this? Should i go S-OFF and download? I'd appricate anyone willing to provide me step-by-step diections before i jack up my phone.
S-OFF is the best way to go it will save you so many headaches down the road.
If you choose to stay S-ON you will have to relock your bootloader and take the OTA from your phone and once complete unlock again (HTC-DEV) flash twrp again and install a Superuser app of your choice or flash a custom rom to gain root

Ex. New firmware
Soff - flash firmware after a kind and knowledgeable xda member posts it.
Son - flash stock rom, flash stock recovery, oem lock, download and start ota, unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash root method or custom rom, fastboot 3.16 kernel (for tp support on custom rom), forget about aosp roms for the time being since new touch panel firmware borks touch screen.

Reset to Stock/3.10.502.2/No S-Off

Hello all,
I usually don't like posting new threads as you can find all you need by searching, but I believe I have a particular situation.
I rooted my phone a while ago using the appropriate methods and then flashed this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440315
I didn't recognize until now, as I am trying to return to stock rom and stuff in order to clean install the new official AT&T update, that this rom somehow also updated my firmware to 3.10.502.2 but I am not S-Off. I didn't/don't know how it upgraded my firmware to this w/o being S-Off but it is. So I have read that if I try and install any other stock rom than my touch screen won't work. And in order for that to work, I think I'll have to gain S-Off and then flash an earlier firmware then flash a rom, but I don't really want to be S-Off for this phone.
Also another stupid mistake I did was not create a nandroid backup of my stock everything before flashing
So in order to accomplish my goal I believe my 2 options are to either gain S-Off, flash an ealier firmware (like 1.26.502.12) and then flash a stock rom or I saw a link that had a stock nandroid backup: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272893
that I can maybe use to restore but will this restore my firmware too?
Any help would be appreciated
Download the 3.17.502.3 RUU and update that way. Backup your data, the RUU method wipes internal storage.

Yes, RUU updating is meant to be done with S-ON.

[Q] How to update hboot with S-ON?

I'm on hboot version 3.16 but I need to go up to 3.19 or the latest one. I don't know how to do this so I'm hoping XDA will help. I currently have an unlocked boot loader and a rooted SkyDragon GPE ROM on 4.4.4. I tried the update to 5.0.1 with the SkyDragon ROM but the WiFi doesn't work. The FAQ for the ROM said this:
"Q: Why isn't wifi working?
A: Need to flash either latest GPE L firmware in this post, or Latest Sense firmware 4.16.xxxx.x. If you are S-ON however you will have to wait until you get latest Official OTA for your device as you cannot flash a different firmware unless you are S-OFF. If you still don't have wifi after firmware flash you need to clean your system/data(Not sdcard)/cache and reflash the rom."

I am currently downloading a stock HTC Sense ROM and am going to go back to stock and try and do an official OTA update and hopefully it will update hboot or I need a way to get S-OFF.
Here is the link with the stock ROM and recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...nt/att-stock-backups-recoveries-otas-t2855966
I know how to flash the stock ROM but I do not know how to flash the stock recovery.img. Please give me directions on how to flash the recovery after I flash the stock ROM. I also will need to know how to get back to where I am now. Will going back to stock lose the unlocked boot loader? Will I lose root?
Although if there is a way to avoid that by getting S-OFF I will need to know how to do that.
My experience on this is small. I am familiar with adb and flashing ROMs but that's where it ends.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Even if you flash the latest 4.4.4 ATT update you still may have issues,You cant flash non att device firmware unless s-off,and as there is no official lollipop version for ATT.youd need to be s-off to get it all updated, changing cid and mid for gpe device requires this to be fully converted.
Bootloader question,I think if s-on you have to relock bootloader to take the ota(could be wrong, search this answer)
Root question yes youll loose root by going back to stock
Flashing:
Flash the backup of stock ROM via twrp.
Copy stock recovery to adb/fastboot location, connect phone via fastbootusb, open command prompt run fastboot flash recovery (nameofrecovery).img
There are more in depth tutorials here on the forum that answer all your question, suggest reading before jumping in with both feet
Edit: Dottat has uploaded the signed firmware for 3.42.502.1 in General Section so go there, grab it, and flash away (don't forget to give that man a thumb up for his REAL effort)
Yes, you CAN absolutely flash firmware with S-On. If your main-version through getvar is 1.58.502.1 or below, you can run the RUU for 4.4.3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/general/htc-one-m8-ruu-m8ul-4-4-3-t2860423
Then run the latest RUU for 4.4.4 to get newer hboot.
Disregard ALL the claims about unable to flash firmware with S-On, those who insist so are simply too lazy to explain that their uploaded firmware packages are modified ones from the originals. If the firmware comes signed by HTC, you can flash it as long as you meet all the pre-requisites (version-main, MODELID, CID) :fingers-crossed:
