Hi to all,
first to say, I am not M4A owner, but, in my company lots of people got it as company phone (8GB versions) and everyone complains...
Primarily, lagging, lack of internal memory, camera too slow, and I saw it myself, that LP SW is real pain in the a....
I had previously Z2, Z ultra, Z3C, and now Z3+ , and really likes Sony phones, and although all these were flagships, I am sure M4A can perform better.
So, what do you, users, recommend?
Ideas:
- rooting, custom recovery
- exposed
- some scripting like skynet project
- is there some better camera SW that will speed up camera performance
- What is the best way to solve memory issues etc...
I'd like to help (at list some of them, willing to play with it)...But I need real info from users that improved their user experience...

In my opinion, the only thing that really could improve the overall performance of this device is an optimized kernel. The first firmware for this phone was great in terms of performance, then it started going downhill and the recent updates made a sort of "uphill" but still bad. Storage and performance is what limits the satisfaction of using this phone - other than that, everything is great!
Gaming is very bad i don't know why I had Xperia tx 1G ram 2 core but it's much better than m4 with 2 G ram 8 core why? camera is just bad very slow hope someone just fix them we need real devloper because it's software problems not hardware

This method is based on modifying interactive governor. So you need root access. You can do this by 2 ways. The first is kernel auditor (also requires busybox). Just set up interactive parametres as i wrote on 4pda. I think you will understand how to do this. The 2 way is to put init.qcom.post_boot.sh into system/etc with right permissions. It's the same, but as for me it's more comfortable. You can just change governor to ondemand, but phone will randomly rebooting

Yes, but situation is better than if you set ondemand. If you want to cool down your phone, just change thermal engine file. You can download it here, on xda. As for me, i don't give a f... about overheating. You can cook everywhere)
Thanks, will give it a try...

Nope. This is more advanced than just changing governor. You have to manually change some interactive governor parametres.

I don't have the same phone as you but Intellidemand / Zen (governor / schedular) seem to be a winning combination for performance vs battery life but it will probably vary from ROM to ROM and supposes the kernel you've installed supports it.
Perhaps you could say what you're hoping to achieve? Max battery life (slow the CPU down) vs performance.

Oh, sorry, I'm hoping to max battery life and maybe speed up the phones performance, (if possible) I got the paid app from the market even though we don't have the same phone but if you could share your settings I guess its better than the factory settings
Once again thank you, and sorry I forgot to put what I was hoping to achieve in my original post

You have to choose. Best performance or best battery. If you want the best compromise then like I said, Intellidemand and zen if your kernel supports them.
I'm not sharing settings as we have different phones and different Kernels so it'd be pointless.
I used to have lots of profiles for various times of day, screen on, screen off etc but now I pretty have two. One for general (min and max are whatever the kernel allows) and a profile for low battery where it max's the CPU at 30-50% whatever is max and changes to the conservative governor.

Ok see didn't know that, so I would choose performance over battery life then I am new to this and don't want to brick my phone I bricked a rooted android trying to change a boot animation using root explorer so just trying to be careful, also if you could help me with the "MHz" settings it would be great to the choices are 497, 754 ,988 & 1209 that would be great to
I have all the good root apps titanium backup pro root explorer pro and a lot others, but lol I just don't know how to use them yet...any knowledge on a boot animation logo change would be appreciated to I learned a little after I bricked ny phone I know that I didn't put it in the right folder but every post I read people say it bricked their phone so maybe I should staw away from it until I am a little bit more experienced idk.
But for cpu performance would be what I would choose
Thanks again..
People are stating that the performance is much improved after flashing the kernel. So I want to ask how does GTA sanandreas run on the device is it comparable to the ONEPLUS ONE ? Could anyone maybe upload a short sample to youtube of the game running at max settings on the device with the Blu_spark kernel ?
Video I found of gta performance with stock kernel skip to 2:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCfUUhp_M54
With Blu spark it's exactly as one plus one performance.

Possible yes but not with Blu spark. Noone working on it as far as I know. Eng.stk could implement it in Blu spark but does not want to, which is the correct decision in my opinion.

Why wouldn't it be the correct decision ? it could be completely optional
Yeah. I wish that someone would even make a 2.5ghz possible as optional. People that tweak with kernels usually know what they are doing plus one setting that is above the normal values would not even bloat it. Also we have thermal limit that will kick in that there will be no damage. It would be nice to experiment just a little bit.
Ps. Still one helluva kernel. Thanks to eng.stk
Great kernel. I use it on CM 13 with an incredible undervolt. I'd bet I could hit even 2.8ghz easily and stay under stock voltages. Loving it for everything else though.

Been my daily driver for a week. 729mhz was unstable so I had to raise it to 730mv from 725, but its great. Hence why I'd like more options for frequencies haha. I think I have an insanely high binned chip even though its an AA model. Can't wait to see what frequencies I can hit though.

Now it seems like 930mv is also working for me. Not crashed after 3dmark, asphalt 8 and stability test. Also lowered 1900mhz to 915mv.

925 actually works too, but I had a few bugs. Rule of thumb is generally 10mv above whatever works so I settled with 935. I will test 930 though. Had to raise 1900 to 910. 905 gave me issues in stability testing.

excuse me for being a noob, but, what's the main advantage of undervolting the cpu? is it done to achieve a longer battery life? it does not limit performance right?

You dont want to use anyones voltage settings. Undervolting is random. Some people get amazing results while someone gets crashing.
Undervolting cpu makes the phone run cooler and will save a bit of battery also.
Less heat also means that the cpu will propably survive a bit longer. Same goes for battery because cpu temps affect the battery too.
You just need to test all the voltages yourself and see what works and what does not.
Always make a backup that if something goes wrong you can always restore the system.
Also if you undervolt dont go complaining to devs about crashing or system lockups.

okay then i'll go straight to kernel adiutor and set my own voltages.

okay i'll try backing up again and then changing my cpu settings.
thanks a lot for your help.
Since I received so many inquires into how I chose to save a moderate volume of battery power via trial and error, I decided to write up a little "this is what has worked for me" post.
First off, like I said, "this is what has worked for me," so I'm not held accountable if you manage to kcuf up your phone...cool? Ok.
Second, I take no credit in the development, research, exploits and other such methods used to obtain the following masterpieces of Android Development: Kernel Auduitor's devs, @klabit87 for his awesome work and support (as well as those who preceded his work), and @stang5litre for a brilliant ROM (v3) that allows such flexibility.
Now...keep in mind battery life greatly depends on what apps you have and frequent, location, sleep patterns...basically how you use your device. Ok, enough blabbering...
Once you have followed the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3321587 to a tee you must first read and study how each governor/io is structured and why.
Here are the basic parameters I'm running:
*Version 1 Configuration
Governor = darkness
I/O = fiops
Multi-core Powersaving = Aggressive
MP Decision = off
TCP Congestion Algorithm = reno*
Entropy - Read = 1024
Write = 2048
Low Memory = Aggressive
And I pulled the VFS Cache Pressure down to 5 in Virtual Memory.
Here are the basic parameters I'm running:
*Version 2 Configuration
Governor = alucard
I/O (Internal) = fiops
(External) = vr
Multi-core Powersaving = Disabled
MP Decision = off
*Thermal = SoC Temperature Throttle*
TCP Congestion Algorithm = cubic
Entropy - Read = 256
Write = 1024
Low Memory = Medium
Return VFS Cache Pressure to its default value of 10 in Virtual Memory
In addition to all of that, I use Greenify, Recently, Coolify and various native settings (i.e. Auto-bright -3, screen timeout, no transition animations).
The Version 2 Configuration is a great, harmonically balanced tapestry of performance and energy conservation.
I have tested this particular set-up fairly extensively, with a little tweaking along the way. And I feel that this is the optimal configuration, given the parameters. You guys may wanna play a little bit with the Entropy, because I did so and am still playing with it just to see what kind of performance I can achieve.
Below are a few screenshots of my set up (Version 1 Config).
Screenshots for Version 2 Config http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66528774&postcount=15
Device: SCH-I545
ROM: stang5litre 5.0 Edition v3
Bootloader: NK4
System: OC1
Xposed: v65 _ Version3.0Alpha4
**NOTE: You WILL have to play around a bit to find out what works best for your style of use.
*EVERY DEVICE/EXPERIENCE METHOD WILL BE DIFFERENT!
***UPDATE: I have discovered that setting TCP Congestion Algorithm to reno has a *POSSIBLE* negative effect on battery life over a certain period of time (1 week to be approximate). I've specifically related this to streaming content on YouTube via background playback (Red or Xposed).
*Thermal* PLEASE READ! I did encounter and record abnormally high temperatures when this setting was set to Core Control.
Feel free to post info, screenshots or feedback that document your device's performance!

I'm on NK4 bootloader with OC1 system, so I'm not sure exactly what could be causing a Wi-Fi issue. If u go to the thread I linked in the OP, you should use the search function to search "Wi-Fi" and read thru them. Also, what ROM are u running? That could have something to do with it as well. If I recall correctly, I saw where someone had the same issue. Always make sure you follow the instructions and deviate not one iota of them.

Actually it would make sense if it had to do with TCP, because Wi-Fi was fine until I messed with it.

Ooo. Not good. Don't see any reason why it would be doing all that. Are u running in Global mode or LTE/CDMA? I had to switch from global to lte because I was having data drops. But they only occurred at work at a certain time of the day. Also, a good FlashFire backup and a Rom reinstall works wonders. I been running stang's v3 since beginning of February and have put it thru the ringer. App installs/uninstalls, bootloops, and all that. Write possibly the most stable Rom and kernel set up I've ever ran. .

Since I'm not on that ROM, it would be at least a month before I could give any assessment and positive results. If you have tried both methods on Ultra N5 and are not satisfied, play around with it...I explicitly advocate for ppl to play around according to the base parameters I set forth, or even completely different templates. 9 times out of 10, battery life is relative to the user's style of use, as well as what modifications [emphasis on Xposed] you may be implementing.

Ooo. Write possibly the most stable Rom and kernel set up I've ever ran. .

]Finally is here. Marshmallow 26.3.A.0.131 update bring us so wanted improvements.
Here you can post your thoughts, performance reports, or possible bugs you may found.
First what get better:
1. Overall performance - is so smooth, every menu scroll fast.
2. Camera - i can't confirm, seems little bit better
3. WIFI - Wow so much better, before i was trying couple times until get connected, now is instant.
4. Actual perfomance - I make test with Antutu, Asphalt etc. Is much, much better. Antutu score on Android 5 was around 29 k and 30 k max. Marshmallow wake the beast and score now is 32 k. Asphalt 8 is playable on medium settings, before very low settings was only way to play it normal. Do you know why? CPU isn't limited anymore 4 cores on 1.46 Ghz and 0.8 Ghz for the second 4 cores.
What wasn't fix, or improve:
Apps opening time
Overheating is same as before
Low storage
More perfomance needed
Sites loading is slow as before
I found two bugs, the one bug is in the dialer the letters under the numbers are repositioned a little bit, and idk if this is a bug but the status bar doesn't take the color of the app you are using

I think it's called "feature", you may want to try What's New (Play Store) themes if you'd like colourful status-bar. It looks like that stock themes prefer black status bars now.

Seems to be a bug, Detect USB device does not make sense without OTG.
The update is fine but a little bit disappointed specially on performance, apps are still opening very slow although UI is faster, at least now we have a better multitasking performance and no more bugs on RAM.
I had about 35k score in Antutu so MM sucks.
Mobile Data got buggy for me, didn't work until restart. Guys what happening with the Speaker it was so loud before now is very reduced i check settings nothing to about it.

Performance will always be the same coz of the ****ty chipset thats inside m4 aqua. Yes, Snapdragon 615 is pile of crap

Nope, my M4 Aqua is almost out of the box, 100% stock, bootloader locked, never root, just updated via Xperia Companion a few hours ago.
I don't like the fact that mpdecision is not included in the new update. it gives me huge battery drain.
Anyone have problems with gallery apps? My pictures doesn't render to be watched, only a black screen, the files are ok and the SD Card is new

I also found that speaker was louder and clear on LP plus even have a little bit of distortion at max volume now, and in mi case, performance in 3D games was smoother in LP 3.120 with ondemand CPU governor. It might fix again if i change governor in MM but still not rooted as im waiting for a method for locked bootloader.

Snapdragon 615 does not need it nor it's compatible with mpdecision..
Sony won't be adding any hotplug as they don't make
Custom kernel or drivers.. It's just qualcomm,s fault..
Is somebody else bothered with the weird gap between the signal bars and the battery icon?
Also, does anyone know how can I remove agv Antivirus? I'll appreciate it.
Guys i noticed that the brightest is very low for out side

I like New update, everything seems to work ok, i have made adoptable sfor?ie tru adb (mixed 50) and i am pleased with result. I think rom needs a day or two to settled down... Yesterday i run AnTuTu and obtained 35k scor and today i got 36.7k... maybe tomorrow i'll get 40k...
Everything is just great, but i miss the real stamina mode from Sony..

What I've recently found out is the source of all LG's lags. It's not animations as everyone believed. They have 2 thing that must be fixed urgently. Firstly they have cfq scheduler for I/O ops which I believe is way too slow and useless these days. It cripples I/O performance in the first place.
Secondly, if I go to dev settings and check "Enable strict mode" option you'll see red frames around apps when app runs in the main thread for long time. And what you'll see is that red frame never appears around Chrome, or Opera, or Firefox, or games.
Instead, when you go back to LG Home aka launcher, or to settings list like apps & notifications list you'll always see red frame appearing. It's because all the way LG's ROM is running in the main thread which is lame and legacy and must be deprecated and fixed ASAP. You can see red frame even when you press power button and block your phone which must not appear. Or, in stock Music app when browsing list of albums, red frame appears every several seconds.
How long will it take for LG to fix it's laggy ROM? It hurts their sales A LOT

Look how long it took Samsung to get their crappy TouchWiz to not lag? I'm gonna guess not soon for LG lol

Mine doesn't either.
V30, one year usage without factory reset, not a single lag. No idea what's are you talking about. Maybe it's your carrier stuff..

I hope that someone will ask Max Lee so him to show in his reviews of V40 what I said in original post. And if he'll show and compare with like some oneplus 6T everyone will see that and LG will have to do something about it

I really don't care about bench marks. They don't represent real life usage. The phone does not lag.

Never lag? Come on folks. Underrated device but lags just like any other phone. Nothing major.
Don't know what op talking about.

Considering the majority of LG owners with v20 and v30 never experienced lag....
And I see a majority of Huawei owners say that phone lags hard.

I understood where I'm mistaken.
To see effect of "Strict mode enabled" you must reboot phone. I can't see red frames around screen not until I rebooted mine. But after I rebooted with "Enable strict mode" tick even when I start camera it fires up with red frame all around window. And even when I press power button to block phone it turns screen off but before it phone shows red frame. It shouldn't happen, the launcher LG Home shouldn't run itself always in the main thread.

Don't you suddenly know what I/O scheduler do Huawei's phones use? Probably different than cfq, right?
And background thing don't cause lags. There's at least 4 low power A53 cores aka Kryo Silver in every 835/845 that are able to run background things. Lags are caused by running interactive things in main tread which lead to visible delay for user
Uninstall all tweaks you don't need them. LG optimized the hell out of the V30. Your kernel tweaks are what's causing the lag. After I removed L Speed, Kernel Adiutor and all that nonsense my device has been lagfree. These apps make people think they undo an OS better than LG developers. Not tweaking anything gives you the best result.

I don't even use greenify anymore. I noticed I got better battery life after I uninstalled it.
Yep, plain stock rooted no lag.

I personally think is a mix bag of Android Oreo bugs and LG UI bugs mixed together and installing clunky apps do not help. The floating bar alone take 1gb of system memory for shortcuts that is some bad UI implementation.
I sometimes encounter lag on my G6. I dont know whats causing it. Im already using nova launcher. UI lag is still there.

So, you know now that lags are not affected by which launcher you use and it's not LG launcher that lags? It's LG defective internal I/O and CPU governors that cause lags

I don't have any lag either. I think he's done stuff to his phones, which cause lag.
For instance, some of the package disablers cause lag, depending on the system app being "disabled". Plus, you're not really saving any space.
The OP moved on to G7 before we got universal root on the V30 and may even be on V40 by now or he's seriously looking at it. He's posted AGAINST having ROOT in the recent past. We had a discussion in another thread on the V40 forum about root as philosophy of ownership. Some people feel that root is only for "improving" phone functionality and if stock firmware is good enough, there's no need for root anymore. I disagree with that sentiment.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77940202&postcount=18
He specifically mentioned app disablers here:
Billy Madison said:

Yes, you can remove. Those that can't from menu, can be uninstalled by adb from PC or with means of LG Package Disabler. So, no hassle
