We now know that the new vibrant phones have the hardware key disabled to enter recovery mode. But these phones are not defective. The hardware key has been purposefully disabled as part of a misplaced strategy to secure a phone that has basically no security built into it.
Therefore it is really easy to gain root access to these phones. However the process requires the use of the adb program that is part of the google android sdk. This program likes to run on a 32-bit linux distribution. Since it will not run on a 64 bit system, here is how I managed to gain root access to my phone:
1. Download the sdk from google.
2. Boot into linux on a 32 bit machine. (I used ubuntu live cd on an old Toshiba laptop with an available linux partition to mount on the hd. Your mileage may vary.)
3. If you are not using ubuntu make sure that your c library is compatible.
4. Install the google android sdk on the hd linux partition, e.g. /home/android.
5. Plug your Samsung vibrant into the usb port on the linux machine.
The following steps are specific to ubuntu. The important thing to remember is that the adb program must run its server as root to gain the access we desire.
6. Start the terminal app: Applications > Accessories > Terminal
7. Mount the partition and change to the sdk directory:
sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media
cd /media/*/home/android/tools
7. Start the adb server:
sudo ./adb start-server
8. Make sure your device is recognized:
./adb devices
If you do not see your device connected you have some troubleshooting to do.
9. Reboot your phone into recovery mode:
./adb reboot recovery
Congratulations! You just gained root access to your hardware locked vibrant.

Yeah it's good, but you should move this thread to Samsung Vibrant forum.
This works on any android phone.
Although the method was inspired by the desire to use my vibrant as a g3 modem, the adb program is a general android maintenance tool that runs on linux. So it really doesn't matter what kind of phone you have. Once you have started the adb-server as root the reboot command will boot any android phone plugged into the linux box.

Would this also work for the new T-mobile G2 4G ?
I'm sure we will be seeing more locked phones besides the vibrant and g2. This fix should work for them all. The adb-server gives you root access to your phone provided that you have root access to the machine upon which it runs.

Keep in mind that no matter what you do on the G2, it'll be wiped on reboot. You can gain root temporarily, but when you reboot, it's gone

If you want to keep root after your next reboot, you need to update your filesystem. The first step is to install the programs busybox and su.
Before you boot into recovery mode, make sure you have the update.zip file downloaded onto your phone's internal memory card. Whatever is on this card will be left alone even upon a factory reset. But the phone's internal memory will be wiped. The update.zip file merely installs those two programs to the internal memory and doesn't wipe anything.
1. Download the root update for your phone. Rename the file update.zip and place it on the root directory of your device's internal flash memory.
2. Once you are in recovery mode, use the volume keys to scroll and the power key to select "reinstall packages". (This works on the vibrant. The g2 may be slightly different.)
3. Your phone will reboot and you will find the Superuser app has been installed. This app lets you grant root access to applications that need it.
Now you can download powerful apps from the market to gain even more control over your phone.
I hope this helps.
Does boot with a live CD of 32 bit ubuntu on my AMD64 work?? or do i need to boot on a computer with a 32bit processor as well?
Running the 32 bit distribution cd on your 64 bit system should be fine.

unlocking on root system
I was wondering if it was okay to unlock a Samsung Vibrant when it is already rooted?
the JI6 OTA update fixed this issue.
If you upgraded using Kies or ODIN, you may still be HWL, BUT, there is a fix:
If you can not get into download mode, please try this:
** Please note this is for JI6, if you are running froyo do not do this **
untermensch has a fix for those who are HWL'd that seems VERY effective. I always heard some who updated from JFD to JI6 had the HWL fixed automatically, but that was not the case for everyone. It appears those who updated OTA got the fix, but most who did ODIN or Kies did NOT get the HWL issue fixed.
Please see his excellent thread by clicking here. Hope this helps.
If you are using froyo, I imagine you could revert back to JI6 and flash this to fix the HWL.
HWL but scared to update.zip
Hi all. I am running Ji6 and i am still hardware locked. I just want to root my phone so i can delete some stock bloatware.
Can root my phone without having to "fix" HWL. I am wondering, how Kies successfully upgraded my phone to JI6 with HWL? If I upgrade to froyo (once available) will the upgrade access recovery? WIil the upgrade brick my phone?
I know for Froyo there is z4root which seems to be an easy, safe way to root..
So should i plan on waiting for Froyo??
Just fyi... I just had my vibrant warranty replaced through tmobile, when I registered it with samsung the manufacture date showed november. I had no issues getting to recovery using the keypresses.
The whole warranty swap went alot better than I was expecting, phone looks new not refurbed, it came in like 1 or 2 days from when I called, AND they unlocked it for me even though I was at my unlock limit since it was a warranty replacement, just make sure they specify that in the request.

Thanks for help, T-mobile's Vibrant is hardware locked.
Of course, you don't need either Linux or 32-bit, it worked just fine from a Windows 64-bit machine (and will from any that has a version of ADK for it). Just Shift+right-click in "android-sdk-windows\platform-tools" and select "Open command window here", enter "adb devices" to launch the daemon and make sure your device is connected properly (it needs to be in "USB debugging mode", which you can select in settings), and then enter "adb reboot recovery". Phone should restart, select "Reinstall Packages" using volume keys and power key to enter.
Bought Samsung Vibrant - SGH T959 - Have questions...
Hi all,
I joined the forums recently to learn about rooting my EVO. With the help of a number of people on the forums I was able to easily root my EVO and install a custom ROM. Still haven't flashed any new Kernels yet but I may do that soon.
Anyway, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) which of course is T-Mobile phone. I got it from my friend for $50 because I know they sell on eBay for anywhere from $250-$350.
However, I recently upgraded the phone for him before I bought it to 2.2 (Froyo). This seems to be bad for me because now I want to Unlock the phone so that it can be used with any carrier, or a carrier aside from T-Mobile but I've read in the forums here that it's hard to Unlock the device if you've upgraded to Froyo via Kies.
Can anyone help me with Unlocking my device and could someone give me a quick rundown of what the key commands are for this phone too? Such as how to access recovery to flash a ROM. Although I am not going to ROOT this device unless it is required in order to unlock the phone.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
Oh, and I won't get mad if my post needs to be moved to another thread either so please move it to the right place if it needs to be.
Thanks!

Well now, I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045 but is it cool to do this while running Froyo? And another question, since I bought this phone from a friend can I still have it replaced/fixed (if needed) if the warranty is still active on it?
Thanks!

Hi, I just bought this phone from TECA Mobility, it turns out to be an Alps S5. See attachement for a detailed description.
I tried to ge the root. I tried some different tools, without success.
MTK Droid Tools ROOT button doesn't work but gives a link to xda's MKT forum, so I started with the recommended procedure. I tried to read back the ROM with SP-FlashTools but no way, it doesn't start. I also made some attempts with the Android SDK but adb backup of course doesn't work for the System partition without root.
When I send the adb reboot recovery command the phone goes in download mode, with the adb reboot bootloader command it goes in fastboot mode, while to have it in the factory recovery mode I have to manually hold down the start and vol down buttons. However, it doesn't matter, the readback does not start.
Should I try to install the CWD recovery without having a backup of the ROM? I think it's too risky. I looked at NEEDROM to see if I can find my ROM, but didn't find. I found these, "S5 SM-G900 MT6592", but I cannot be sure it's the right one.
Somebody can help me? I want to root the device.

Hi
1) First root your device using MTK Chopper (from PC) or framaroot (from android app) . Both work fine for MTK phones
2) Then using MTK droid tools backup your ROM. Here is the guide for that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2730031
3)Then using MTK droid tools , make CWM recovery for your phone and install it . Here is guide for that

I think you mean MOTO Chopper? It doesn't work, same as framaroot. They are old tools, they don't work anymore on the ROMs released after June 2014.
ODIN could work but I have not the sure/right file to download.
Generally speaking, the first thing to do is that of getting a backup of the ROM from the un-rooted phone
The guides that have been reported to work in these cases are:
From XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38337401&postcount=5
From China Devices:
http://www.china-devices.com/Thread-ROOT-CWM-Readback-your-ROM-with-SP-Flash-Tools#
Hereunder is the link to a success case story:
http://www.china-devices.com/Thread-Rooting-new-octacore-S5
There is no way I know to get the root with one-click-tools, there is no case I could find of anybody being able to root these phones by following other procedures.
If anybody knows better, please send me a link (MTK phones with ROM s released after june 2014 only!!!)
My only problem now is that I cannot get the read back with Flash Tools. I have tried uncountable button-pressing combinations, I have put the phone in recovery, download, fastboot mode, I have tried with and without battery, phone switched off or on - no error, but the read-back doesn't start (however my phone doesn't have the USB connection working when it's off or without battery).
The only way to skip this step is, if I had already a copy of the firmware available, a sure one.
Kindly help me if you can
Hi
Odin doesn't work for MTK mate
Try this latest app . It worked for some latest MTK KK phones

Some other KK phones got rooted using vroot and rootgenius
Try your luck
Final option is to read back from SPFT which has 90+ success rate

As bizarre as this sounds, I managed to get root on a similar phone (another MTK6592 S5 knockoff) with MTK tools. After exhausting my options, I clicked the ADB button and tried to get root shell regardless (via 'adb root shell', which probably isn't the proper command but it works regardless), which caused some sort of hang. After a minute or so I unplugged my phone, which caused things to start responding again; plugging it back in showed me as having temporary root, and the get root button actually worked the next time I tried it. I have no idea how or why it worked, or if it was a once in a lifetime occurrence, but it can't hurt to try.
Also, if your phone is anything like mine (and is actually running some form of KitKat), good luck getting write support for external SD cards. I couldn't get the system partition to mount (to write changes to the necessary file) via anything but ADB shell.
Problem solved
Good to know, thank ypu.
However in the meantime I solved my problem.
My phone works this way: I have to remove the battery and connect it to the USB cable. Then it goes in "preloader mode" and tries to install a driver called "MT65XX preloader driver". This driver actually emulates a COM port. If data transfer doesn't start, then, after a few seconds, the device goes down and disappear from Windows list. So it is easy to miss it when we install all drivers. I had to dowload it (from Google cloud service in my case), install and ... the Read Back started !!! Now I have completed the procedure and my phone is rooted with the CWD recovery installed.

Maybe your phone was using firmware dated before june 2014? These was a bug that was exploited by Framaroot, but now they fixed it.
Is your phone also from ALPS? They sold it to me as capable of installing an external 64GB SDHC card, but I cannot have it working. Did you face any similar issue?
Otherwise 32GB cards work fine. Have you tried Aparted app? I use it for formatting/maintenace. This app makes partitioning, I guess it should work.
Also, if your phone is from ALPS, does it really have the ROM memory that is advertised?
I am facing some interesting issues with my phone on this respect. It was sold as having 16GB internal ROM, of which about 12GB avalible for users. In fact, the settings menu shows 10GB ,( 8GB available) of internal memory, and about 4GB of phone memory. Well, if I am correct, this so called internal memory maps to the directory /data (the one highest level in the root), who corresponds to partirtion mmcblk0p7. This partition actually has a size of 2.3GB instead of 10 !!!. f I install and try to run online Nandroid backup, I cannot have it working on paths directed towards the SDcards, but it works on the path data/media. Well, a backup of about 1.2GB is shown in the setting menu of the phone as a memory consumption of about 5 GB !!!
Then I had also hard time in copying this file from the /data directory to one of the SD cards. Root Browser and Root Explorer didn't work, only ES Manager with root rights worked.
Maybe you can give me some advice in finding some tool or SDK procedure to assess what the real total size of the memory is? Or some suggestion on how to fix the ext 64GB card? I got bad feelings with the guys who sold this phone to me, so I would like to collect some more evidence if possible.
I downloaded some applications for making device inspection. They read the manufacturers' data, so they get cheated - even if, in some cases, they can show the right amount of unused memory still available (quite lower than declared by the phone) . Also I cannot see the real size of the RAM memory used by the CPU .
Need stock ROM for Teca g89 mobile.

If anyone who might have this phone by fortunate can help me to post the stock rom by read back or any process whatever you wish as you know much than me.
Desperately need the ROM file as I want to have my phone back to working.... Thank you....

and the second page comments for recovery hints. TWRP requires some study and preparation before use so it's not good to be stuck when attempting recovery.
Note the comment on the 3rd page about the updated recovery image that lets you see what you are doing on the screen. For me I got it working, working in the dark (ie. not seeing anything on screen), so it's too early for a video tutorial.

Rooting using Kingo Root
Rooting nowadays is very simple.
But the easiest way to do it is the following:
1. Download Kingo Root for Windows, Mac or Linux;
2. Install Kingo Root;
3. Open the program;
4. Connect your phone to your pc through USB cable and wait for Kingo Root recognize it;
5. If your phone is rootable it will appear a button saying "ROOT", click there (If your device is not rootable then you are out of luck and you must try another method)
6. Don't remove your phone and don't click anywhere, wait until the rooting process is finished;
7. After this your phone should reboot, it means you are now rooted (If your phone did'nt rebooted, manually reboot it then);
8. Enjoy!
Note: Rooting will void the device's warranty, root at your own risk.
Download the phone's drivers if needed and disable Windows, Mac or Linux firewall if needed.
Hope it works for you!

Just picked up at Best Buy for $39 a Digiland DL718M tablet. It has lillipop 5.1 on it. I read the threads on the 10 inch digiland tablet and tried everything there that seemed relevant. This included iroot, v root, and kingo. None worked and Kingo bricked the thing on a second attempt. Luckily I was with in the 15 days at best buy so I just returned it saying it failed in a software update (which it did....) With the "new" new tablet I did not do the OTA update and tried kingo and iroot out of the box. Both failed. Anyone been able to root this puppy yet? I sure am getting no where fast. (did activate USB debug for all attempts). Tried PC and onboard software. Nothing is working.....

Hi fourtwentybuddy,
Did it work for you ??? The site seems to be suspicious so I can't open it. I'm looking for root for this device too.
It did not work...the site downloaded the app just fine however the biggest issue has been getting the device recognized by adb. I've tried 2 different adb drivers and neither of those made the device not have the exclamation point in Device Manager.
*update*
the latest Kingo Root application for windows had the proper adb drivers for this device. However none of the common rooting apps i tried were successful KingRoot Kingo Root SRSRoot. Ill try iRoot RootGenius & MobileGo this week but im doubtful.

I've already had an Acer B1-810, which i just sent back to repair the bootloop (sshhhh don't tell anyone), yet I still want to buy this one to tinker and test how long it's gonna last. I just think it's better to wait for a root so i can disable background app and boost it a little bit. Small question: Does it have many bloatwares ?
None at all actually
Any news on people being able to root this? I have had no luck so far.
what I've learned so far
from power off, holding down volume down and power button boot into a menu in Chinese.
the top item is a system test
the second item displays test results
the long item is some sort of debug menu
the item below that clears/wipes personal data to factory reset(useful if you forget your lock code)
the bottom item reboots to normal operation
the volume down button navigates the menu, the power button selects choices, and the volume up button acts as a go back button in sub menus.
---------- Post added at 05:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:46 PM ----------
the OEM Android version is nearly stock I did the update and am at 5.1
the developer options is missing the unlock rom option, which is the easiest way to get to root.
these universal adb drivers seem to work
github.com/koush/UniversalAdbDriver
as does this fastboot:
code.google.com/p/android-roms/downloads/detail?name=fastboot-win32.zip&can=2&q=
the fastboot menu is in English, which is nice, but the partitions are write locked, and I haven't figured out how to fix that yet.
and I recommend the ap ' volume in notification ' to solve lolipops refusal to actually change the volume!
So, no one has figured out how to do this root yet? I'm dying to know and I would like it rooted. I've tried every method, even the PC ones. iRoot does not work like I hoped it would :/
getting closer
so it dawned on me i can use adb to reboot into recovery mode, which i did and is in english!
i then tried to sideload, and it told me i had to use adb version 1.0.32 or newer, quick download, and unrar later into the same directory i overwrote my old adb files.
from there i used adb reboot recovery to open the stock android recovery, it provided a dead android robot with his chest open, tapping the power button and volume up at the same time took me into the recovery menu.
i was unable to apply a zip file update superuser.zip either from the adb sideload, or from the sdcard.
it said installation aborted.
got the same response with an .img file with clockwork mod recovery
also same message when trying to use sideload to load superuser apk file
the fastboot that comes with the xda copy of adb 1.0.32 didnt seem to work at all, so went back to previous version of fastboot, mentioned in an earlier post.

Lol, I installed the ADB files and I bricked my Tablet. This doesn't even matter now xD It just keeps restarting
Anyone find a working root yet I'm looking for one and I don't want to try anything with out being sure
tablet on sale again
this tablet is on sale again at best buy online. $36.99 for 2 colors, a really great buy.
I too own this, have tried towel root and kingroot but (of course) no root. This seems to be a "popular" device and for the price is an excellent choice to tinker with. My main reason for needing this root is so i can use my sd card to provide some extra ram. Eventually I plan to use this tablet as an UI for my home automation setup but i need root first.
If someone can figure out how to root a $800 samsung device, surely this $50 china tablet shouldn't be an issue.
Maybe we should all donate $5.00 to a root developer, so they can buy this device and root it for us and him/her self.
We get root, they get a free device. Its a win win.

Hi,
I'm brand new to this forum and my name is Jessy, and it's my pleasure to be here!
I recently bought this AT&T GoPhone (for around $29) at Walmart, and I was following this guide to allow me to use my SD Card as an internal memory storage unit for my phone, but I found out that I need to unlock the Bootloader, install TWRP, SuperSU and Link2SD apps to the SD card and my phone. Since this smart phone is similar to the Idol 3, could I use this method to unlock the Bootloader for my phone or do I have to try a different approach?
I appreciate your time and I look forward to contribute further to these forums! Thanks again!
-Jessy
I picked one up on Black Friday, and decided to root it. I was only able to install an older version of SuperSU though (v2.46). First I had to install the PC version of KingRoot (It's in Chinese I believe, but middle button is always "next" or "yes"), root the phone, and then replace KingRoot with SuperSU. Took me a few tries.
This is the guide I used from the forum:
SuperSU Me_6.4.apk
KingRootSetup v3.2.0.1129.exe
1. install kingrootsetup on pc(must have internet connection to work)
2. connect ur phone with ADB enabled from developers option
3. root ur phone by following on screen instructions...
4. after rooting, install supersume on phone
5.open the app, click on big blue button and wait...
done,replaced kingroot with supersu..

My Alcatel Ideal 4060A froze a few times during the removal of KingRoot, but all I did was: turn off the phone, remove the battery, and finish the procedure once the phone was on. The phone was only $10 on Black Friday, so you could say it was only an experiment on my part. Unless it's a really good phone, where you can go to the manufacture's website and download the original firmware and install it through your PC, there's not much you can do to unbrick a cheap phone that is practically unknown.

Thank you Mario for your help! I'm having a little trouble having my phone being recognized by Kingroot, although I have ADB enabled from the developers option, it seems not to pickup my phone still. I'm still trying though and I'll let you know if I get it to work properly, and perhaps document my mistake so others following this post who happen to have the same problem could know what to do.

*UPDATE*
Just wanted to update that I found out what was my mistake, which is a really simple and basic mistake, I apologize!
What I did was that after I had enabled ADB through my phone, it was already connected to my PC right after I had downloaded Kingroot, so my solution here was simple. I turned off my phone first, then I turned it back on while still connected with Kingroot still running then Kingroot finally read my phone and it rooted it as you outlined. Thanks again for your help, it is too valuable for me!
Here's the guide that I'm following so that I could install more apps to the phone through my 64 GB SD card if you guys were interested, to make the phone more useful, and I also installed my obama phone SIM card on it as well (from lifeline wireless, because hey why not? )

No problem. I'm glad you got the phone rooted. I originally picked up the phone to use as an MP3 player, so I removed most of the unnecessary stock apps with "System app remover (ROOT)", but now that I see how good the phone is (at that price), I plan to use it as a backup phone. It even has a notification LED light for unopened messages LOL; anyway, good luck.
My Alcatel bricked too using this method stuck at boot logo and does nothing... Any fix?
Thanks for writing rooting method for Alcatel 4060a Ideal Pop445. Need some help

I've been an iPhone user for many years, I'm almost new to android. I have unlocked the bootloader from the hidden developers options in the settings app. I haven't found any thing useful to root my new Alcatel Ideal 4060a (Pop 445) (at&t unlocked). There are tons of bloatwares and many apps that I can't transfer to sd card. I hope you two can help me out here as I don't want to brick my device.
Question 1: Do jessy did something wrong(regarding your given steps to root) that makes her device rooted OR she has just been lucky? Because someone just posted that he/she has bricked his/her device.
Should I go ahead and try my luck with your method you there would be some advice you would like to give?
Question 2: If I would be able to root this device, would I be able to install Android 6.0 Marshmellow?
Don't root this yet

I have rooted with Kingroot 5; latest windows version on their website. Now I'm working on replacing it with Supersu or Supersu-me.
I think there always be some solution as far as you are seeing something on your phone's screen.
Just a note from another user with an Alcatel Ideal 4060a... (got for $10 from Best Buy on Black Friday)
Don't try using King-O-Root, then proceed to install Super SU from Google Play. It works that first launch, but on rebooting...
It's permanently bricked. And yes, I tried everything, including adb, recovery (doesn't have an option to flash a rom), from-pc flashing (wouldn't connect/wasn't recognized by adb or the other tools), fastboot (wouldn't launch), etc.
I don't know about the alternate Kingroot app, though. That probably works as some people have said it does for this model.
I was stupid and assumed King-O-Root would work as well, since it seems pretty generic and worked for another phone. I've learned my lesson and will now only follow guides for the specific phone model I have.
Why am I even writing this if it's a different rooting app? Cause I spent 6 hours just to end up killing one of my phones, and this is my best attempt at feeling like there was some worth to the waste. (the chance of preventing someone else the misfortunate, and just ranting)
Anyway, I'm going to bed. (So annoying because I only barely was brash enough to go ahead without a phone-specific guide--was on the fence, but landed on the unfortunate side) Argh! Argh! Argh!

Any solution for this? I want to replace King-O-Root with Super SU.
None that I know of.
I have another Android phone that I was also trying to get root on, and that one gets it temporarily using King-O-Root as well, but I'm too paranoid to try to make it permanent on that second one. Losing both my Android phones would be too painful.
If anything, I guess try the KingRoot program, from the pc, and then use the "SuperSU Me" app, as the person on the first page of this thread described. That way worked for at least one person apparently. (though the poster just after said it bricked theirs, so beware)
By the way, is your root from King-O-Root temporary (till restart) or permanent? I installed Super SU during the same launch I used King-O-Root, so I never got to see whether King-O-Root itself would have worked as a permanent (though non-ideal) solution. (I know that on my other Android phone it's temporary)
King-O-Root = Bricked Phone
KingRoot5 = Root Successful + it is possible to replace with SuperSU

Did you manage to unlock the bootloader? If not then you cant flash anything and building twrp would be useless.

I pulled the boot file. Could someone maybe look at that? I cannot boot to the bootloader.
I could try to flash_image twrp to the recovery and try that.
I got this phone on black friday, shortly after I got root with kingroot 5 pc and it was all great, however I got greedy and replaced kingoroot with supersu :silly:. First reboot and it goes into boot loop. Now its been sitting in a drawer. I think that purify deleted some app it looks at boot.
It looks like the simplest way to get a restore is 'IF' TCL/Alcatel does an update, someone intercepts the signed zip file, then that zip file could be distributed and used with the stock restore.
Hopeful everyone here can work a better solution... thanks for all your hard work everyone.
yes u r right
many time happen with me, Happen with me on asus KA10, But i got fastboot update img lucky. hope that u will get Fast boot image some day or we may able to get recovery for this device . in that case your your phone may start working
