Someone knows? I very liked the moto z pico projector and jbl speaker and i wish that lg will made such things too
Sorry looks like they are not gonna make anymore modules. LG screwed us over. They released a HDK For third parties to make modules and as of right now I have not seen any third parties willing to do so.
Yeah man, this is the pits. I was sure that they'd release a hover module and a robot monkey butler module but yeah, they totes screwed us over by only releasing the modules they told us about rather than the ones i had In my head lulz.
Their modules are horrible as of now. The cam plus is useless and the hifi plus is way too expensive...

Agreed - I wouldn't buy either at current price point and it looks extremely like they'll end up being discounted to shift at this rate.
Did you purchase the G5 on the promise of new 'friends' modules?

No, thankfully. It was just a nice add-on I was hoping would evolve. I would want the hifi plus, but I guess I'll wait for used models before trying it out.
On top of this, not being able to use friends modules from Canada on my UK phone annoys me to no end. They are the SAME device in every way, yet are incompatible with eachother.
I do believe this will be my last LG phone for this and a few other reasons...
I didnt bought the g5 for his modularity but after i sae the moto z i hope lg do something otherwise the g5 is just a standart phone
Bought a g5. Expected more friemds. Quality is poor. Speaker problem, screen burn, fit and finish problem. Poor battery life. Reactivating my Rooted Galaxy S5 and waiting for the new Note 6/7.
Only good thing is the camera. Never another LG
Judging by some sites selling the existing modules there may be a remote control module along with a little robot in a circular shape and some weird sports earphone looking thing (didn't see what It actually was.)

Hi!
I'd really like to get a new phone to replace my ageing LG G2 whose GPS is getting more and more buggy and 2 gigs of RAM is not enough to give me easy use of Pokemon Go. While I don't consider it perfect, I don't like AMOLED screens and the nearest competitor, HTC 10, is way more expensive here in Czechia.
Anyway, I'd like to ask what should I be aware of when buying LG G5. Any faulty series? Something to check immediately? GPS? Backlight bleeding issues?
Thanks!
Be aware that the V20 comes out later this month

Good point! The V20 may be too large for me, but it may offer some interesting ROM porting possibilities maybe.
Hi, I just ordered the LG G5, since there are so much threads I wanna ask if some kind person would refer me what I need to know?
- What's the best ROM atm?
- Any good custom Kernel or should i stay at stock?
- How's Camera quality and other hardware settings on Cyanogenmod?
- Which root/TWRP tutorial is best?
- Any other things I need to know?
Thank you very much
Greetings
> what need to know?
THAT YOURE F U C K E D
but otherwise, its a great phone with a superior camera and speed.
But if youre into customizing your phone, then.. haha.... ha...wow.. you are into a treat! because theres only two models that have been rooted and unlocked, if your international is the H850 one, then youre in a little bit of luck as it is one of the models you can only unlock it's bootloader.
But yet the development for the G5 lacks a lot in the forums, we dont even have an official CyanogenMod but an unofficial one.
Since the lack in bootloader unlocking support and huge range of different models, most of the devs just moved on onto the next phones, like the v20.
You'd expect to enjoy the open source in your beloved android device just to end up being as close as to an IOS user.
Maybe one day there will be a miracle and LG bothers doing a life saving favor and unlock all of the phones and bring in all of the developers.
But everybody doubt it.
Dont expect the build quality be any nice, it has a tight hardware, but assure that you def will be suffering from display defects and additionally to it you might also suffer from the common gps defect.
If you ordered and yet havent received it, consider canceling the order and rewarding yourself with a v20, but sure as hell you might just miss the battery swag feature, I personally LOVE IT
+1 for V20. I have both phones. I like the G5 but it does have 2 big issues: Image retention and GPS. Personally my G5 is H850 European model so I did root the phone. I opened it twice to fix the GPS. Easy fix, but why get yourself into that crap. I live the V20. Good build quality, great screen, strong GPS, very good camera (although I do prefer 16:9 radio like on the G5). Anyway, cancel, get V20. If too expensive just get a Oneplus 3T.
Pretty harsh comments here, taking into account that not every unit has issues.
I have had two H850's, no problems with the screen or GPS. You are not guaranteed to face problems. Although, I don't play with the modules, have not even deattached the bottom once I think. Some people think GPS issues are related to that - moving the battery forces some tiny pins to wrong position I dont know.
There are plenty of Cyanogenmod based roms here, and sure, its not offical, but from what I understood its very stable, and only missing NFC and tethering, which also is the reason its not given the status official.
I dont have owned V20 or 3t. I considered 3t, but the camera was meh and the price was pretty much the same in my country. I chose another G5 over 3t. The first one I dropped really bad.

Honestly, the stock ROM is pretty good now. Both MM and N. I jist don't see the need for CyanogenMod with the G5. Also, LG's UI makes much more sense IMO. I agree that getting a G5 does not guarantee GPS or screen issues..but I see that the two issues are repeated in posts endlessly on forums (in my language and even in XDA). Im surprised that a comapny like Xiaomi sells phone for 150$ with better looking screen than LG. I mean.. common..LG, you make screen! How could you f it up ? G4,V10 and G5 all suffer from image retention. The GPS issue.. well.. that's just bad design. Mine was fine for 7 months and then it started acting up. I still like the phone, but its hard for me to recommend it for casual users.
Also, I will never buy a phone with curved screen again. I miss having good screen protectors.
So we don't have custom Kernels with Color Control for G5 atm?

I am sorry :crying:
It's about time I upgraded my G3 and naturally I'm looking at the newer G5 but I've read a lot of mixed reviews. If you had the chance again, would you buy it again? I'm going the unlocked way because I'm not wanting to add another $30 to my cell bill so that disregards many other newer phones. The 3T is the only other option I'm really debating (yes I'm trying to be cost efficient)... Any thoughts?
Don't do it. The G5 is a nice enough phone, but LG's support for is it pathetic. I have the factory unlocked RS988, and there's no Nougat update anywhere in sight. All the major carriers have been updated, but the factory unlocked version of this flagship phone (which should have been first) gets nothing but mixed messages from LG's customer service team. Throw in the way that the "friends" modules were botched to the point where you have to wonder why no one has filed a class-action law suit, and you have the perfect storm of customer discontentment. In case you didn't already know: the Camera Plus module has major compatibility and charging issues, the highly regarded Bang & Olufsen Hi-fi module is not available is most markets including the US, the Rolling Ball never made it past the demo mode and the 360 VR headset is practically useless due to the lack of supporting apps (no Google Cardboard support, in spite of ads saying otherwise). The only decent module was the 360 Cam, which works with any Android phone.
Well in the opposite end of this guy. If you your looking for phone with root and such. Make sure version 850 and 830 is in your country. If that doesn't matter to you then fine. This phone is definitely worth getting. For $300 and specs, you won't find a better deal.
Seems like newer manufacturered versions have less issues. Before you buy make sure its newer. It will be on the box.

well...in my opinion it is totally worthy of its money...i was previous user of oneplus device (OPX) and i didnt had great time with the support the phone had +way oneplus mainly treated their <<low>> end device...the G5 on the other hand i got it some months now and i regret absolutely nothing about it,got the official update and its still running smooth and perfect...i cant compare it with other devices in its category as its my first flagship phone....all i can say is that iam 100 happy about the specs and especially its price
Hi, all. Have had the G5 since 2016 and gone through 3 original LG batteries (Though one was mediocre).
I did/do plan to do a samsung s7 battery mod.
I attempted a gps fix, but that never really worked properly, so mostly use a old BT gps receiver (not always convenient)
My screen has now cracked and needs replacing, which I can do.
Now, in all fairness the phone spec for average everyday use is fine (many people never fully utilise the full potential of modern phones anyway) , battery is rubbish and of course the other problems.
Camera is good with gcam. Sound is good. I'm on LOS 16 and planned to try 17.
My question is, should I upgrade to a used LG G7 or similar. Something budget friendly with good audio
OR add some costs to repair and mod and continue to use? (tho gps is still an issue)
I know some people will have a quick answer but costs/issues need to be balanced out.
Thanks
You may consider buying a whole G5 and using it as a source for spare parts. Buying an whole old used phone may be cheaper than buying separately the parts you need. I did it some years ago for the Nokia 5800: I bought it new in 2009 for 249€ and then repaired it in 2016 (mostly to play Hooked On: Creatures of the Deep) with parts from another 5800 bought for just 14€.

Keep the G5 as a beater phone, pick up a new and use as spare if nothing else. The S7 mod is excellent.

I've really played hard with my ego and stopped myself from picking up a new or used phone yet.
I still need to do the s7 mod, as the current batteries are making me crazy.
Though I still need to figure out how to make the gps work consistently.
Thx for your input
Yeah I'd also get a second G5 and frankenstein them together if something doesn't work as it should. Bought mine in used condition for 45€ like a month ago which was a steal imo. A new screen only is already 25€ on ebay.
And moreover with a frankenstein device you have higher chances to get original parts, way more than buying spares on ebay or even local stores.
I've had my V30 for 3 years now. Came to it from a Turbo that served me well for years too. The 30 has and still works awesome thanks to all the help from xda gurus.
I enjoy the freedoms of having an unlocked and rooted phone. I was wondering what a good upgrade would be? What are you all moving on to from the V30?
Thanks for any advice.
I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, myself.
I moved on to the Galaxy S10+ but I also gave up rooting. While I fully support the desire to root so you can truly own your device, I find it's getting harder and harder to get there. That said, I have not missed rooting either... I don't feel I'm missing anything by not being able to root this phone.
I chose the S10 because, originally, it was rootable (requires older bootloader)... and it kept most of the great features of the V30 (big battery, headphone jack, high-res screen, similar size, etc).
Thanks for the replies! I absolutely love having a head phone jack haha. All my cars are older and have an auxiliary input jack instead of Bluetooth lol
I'm in this situation too. While my V30 still meets my needs, it's already about five years old. I'm also the last one on our Verizon account - everyone else has been moved to T-Mobile.
I've been looking at the Sony Xperia 1 IV or maybe the previous version the Xperia 1 III. From what I understand they have a headphone jack, stereo speakers, SD card slot, and they're rootable. Their native screen resolution is 1644x3840, although according to GSMArena in normally runs at 1096x2560.
My lack of experience with Sony cell phones is a big part of whats holding me back. Another thing is since T-Mobile doesn't currently carry Sony phones, I lose out on any carrier incentives for the new line.
EDIT - I forgot to mention it also appears to not have a notch or hole-punch for the front camera.

Remember, you can also get a BT adapter for the car. I had this on my older previous car as well. I had one like this, but not this exact brand/model: https://smile.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0
@hitokage004 I had looked at the Sony phones too, but they weren't available in the USA, cost a lot more, and I wasn't sure they work work on USA frequencies. They seem like great devices, but the limited matches on frequencies made it pointless IMO for the USA market. For example, here is the "Sony Xperia 1 IV" on TMo: https://www.frequencycheck.com/carr...04-so-51c-sony-pdx-223/t-mobile-united-states - you can see that LTE is only supported on 2/5 bands.
So, just be careful with that. And don't take my word on it, or that one website either...
@schwinn8 - There is a US model. You have to make sure that's what the seller really has, and unfortunately there are many that don't. That's one of the issues I've seen mentioned over on the XDA forums for the Xperia, so it's one of the things I know to watch out for if I do start actively pursuing one.
I believe there is supposed to be a variant that has 256GB of storage and is a bit cheaper. The international version is available that way, but I haven't confirmed if the US version does - only the 512GB is shown on the Sony US website.
The Xperia 1 III is available on Sony's site, with 256GB storage, at about $900. Then there are the Xperia 5 III and IV, that have a lower screen resolution, etc. The one I'm definitely not considering is Xperia PRO line - between the price and lack of wireless charging.

Yeah, I had looked at the III at one point, but for $900 it's silly money, IMO. I got my S10+ for $300 and that was about a year ago.
Good to know there may be a US model. I wonder if it's something like the LG/Samsung phones where you can just flash over to the right setup that you need, and get the frequencies you want. Again, this would be fine, but not at $900...
There's still the challenge of getting a US carrier to activate it. Most of the time they look at the IMEI and say yes/no, even if it is converted via the ROM. I ran into this with the V30 repeatedly (I was on a VZ MVNO, but the IMEI was something else).
I got a Samsung S20 FE 5G (after some time with Xiaomi/Redmi phones which I definitely don't recommend).
The plus point is that it still has MicroSD card slot. Missing the convenience of the headphone jack but I got a cheap usb dac which has good sound quality.
Unlocking it outside of EU is tough/paid so I am using it with BL locked stock rom (debloated): https://github.com/aakashverma7/Samsung-Debloat/blob/main/[DEBLOAT}Samsung S-Series.txt
It seems that time has finally caught up with my V30+, seeing numerous daily connection drops ( just for a second) at home. Also , file transfers using usb flakes out in mid stream. This is/was a damn good phone. Hopefully can retire into DAP duty. Have a "premium renewed" Galaxy S20 arriving tomorrow (battery replaced by Samsung)

Yeah, I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, my wife and elderly mother now have 64GB LG V35 (most direct upgrade from 64GB V30), my brother in law now has Galaxy S10+ and my sister is now getting Galaxy 20+ (or something like that).
We all had LG V30/V30+.
All replacement phones still have headset jacks, except for my sister's.
After using this S20 for a week now, I'm kind of liking it overall. Still need to debloat stuff, but it is manageable, I have wifi6 & 5G & sdcard , use a dongle for headphones. Guess my ol V30+ was telling me it was time...
My V30+ is about ready to call ir quits
Constantly overheats
Fingerprint scanner doesn't work
Main camera seems to be stuck in a shallow focus range and I have to wack it to get it working.
Was also looking at the sony line but they are expensive
A next option was the Poco X3 Pro... Only negative is the lcd screen in my opinion.
@tech_infinity why dont u recommend xiaomi/redmi? Isn't poco related to them?

All of that could be due to a bloated battery. When my original one bloated, the phone was warmer and the power button (which is where the fingerprint scanner is) wouldn't work unless I really pressed hard. I would take off your case and see if the back of the phone is bulging. If so, you can replace the battery with a new one from Amazon for less than $15. Even if you still think that you're ready to move on to another phone, you might still care to make the small investment to have a usable spare phone and media player.

Perhaps, when the battery was replaced, a few things weren't put back together as well as possible (the power/scanner button has a finicky connection that can come loose, I found out) or dust was introduced (perhaps why the camera focus is sometimes off). I dunno, but you might want take it apart again and make sure that all contacts, sensors and lenses are clean. If that doesn't do it, you might try wiping and clean flashing the phone. I'm just throwing ideas out if you'd prefer to try to fix it. I understand not wanting to bother and just upgrading, too.

It removes a lot of stuff so be careful with what you remove as it may end up removing features you like. I use it with my S20 fe 5g
I've moved to the Xiaomi 12 Global version. It is very good, but I really miss the LG, the back button and maxed out screen-to-phone size. I wish they were still making phones.
