Kernel recommendations - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
In common with other Snapdragon 801 devices I've owned (Nexus 5 & Z3 Compact - once latter has ambient standby modes active) and used (LG G3, HTC One), the OnePlus X has bad standby battery drain. The only one I've tried previously that I found *slightly* better was the SG S5 (which I assumed was due to the OLED).
I wasn't expecting any miracles, but I was hoping that the OP X would be better than devices with smaller batteries and perhaps equal to the SG S5, given both have an OLED. However both stock ROM and custom ROMS have epic standby drain on the OP X ... considerably worse than the Nexus 5 with a smaller battery & (old) IPS screen, and in the case of the device I have now a lot of use (friend gave it to me after mine got stepped on).
Is this something others have noticed, and is there any way to ameliorate it significantly?
Are there any kernels people have found particularly good?
I don't want to disable ambient and various standby / wakeup functions as it significantly limits the usefulness of the phone, and power saving modes seem to make the phone very slow - I already find it a lot more stuttery than the Nexus 5 (though it shouldn't be).
A friend who's had all the OP devices said the OP X's battery drain was particularly bad in his experience, so it seems I don't have a lemon so much as typical experience.
Might have to sell it and go back to the drawing board. Wait for custom ROMS on the ZUK Z2 (or Pro) or the S7 Active, if they come.
The best description I can give is that drain on my OP X with no radios active (mobile, bluetooth or wifi), and not touching it at all for 24H, it'll go from 100% -> 82-84%. The Nexus 5 with GSM & WiFi running, will typically go to 84-86%.
Anyway ...

Wow, you have serious drain...My OPX in those conditions will lose something like 7% (it loses 2% at night for about 9 hours on 4G). The OPX suffers a lot with low cell reception, so im guessing you have a weak signal right? If you are using 4g with a weak signal, my advice is to put the phone in 2g/3g mode (or just 3g)

Since I switched to aosp based Roms and poked around for some great kernel settings, I'm getting descent battery and low drain. Overnight maybe 2-4% tops with WiFi on.

Stock ROM: 4% but I'm not sure, maybe more or less
Custom ROM: 2% and for sure it doesn't have any battery drain

What ROMs / Kernels are you using? Do you have ambient display on or off? Also, do you have adaptive brightness set to on or off? It struck me that maybe if you have it disabled and ambient on, the OLED might remain in a powered up state but not displaying anything ...
The friend with one came back to me and said he got about 5 and a half days of standby on his (with no SIM card and WiFi switched off). I've left mine for about 65 hours now and it's down to 54% ... so seems that it will be similar.
My barely used (and therefore good battery) Nexus 5 used to last about 7-8 days iirc. Battery on the replacement that I got given is significantly degraded (though still last longer than the brand new OP X).

I had great experience with turbo and DU ROM. I just use the kernels provided with some audit settings I found in turbo thread. I've tried every cm based ROM and there great but had too many small issues. I must add that I only use 3g some people in almost every ROM report pour reception with mm. It's all trial and error everyone has a different experience.

I'm on DirtyUnicorns ROM with its own kernel, keep in mind I get 4.5h SOT when I use the device mostly of the time under Wi-Fi.
And yes ambient display on, for me it's a great (I came from a Nexus 4) and I've nothing to complain about the battery life.
Maybe I can get more changing some settings on my OPX? :good:

[dev support please] CMOD 5.0.5.3+ display batrery killer.

I figured I'd make this its own thread after speaking with several people with the same problems using a CMOD 5.0.5.3+ rom. This wasn't a problem in lower editions from what I can remember in testing.
Idk but I believe it is something in the kernel affecting this problem with the display hogging my battery. Even after flashing an undervolted kernel I still can only last 24 hours with an extended life battery, vs a weeks time before. And the display problem has been like this in all CMODS test .6 Roms as well so idk if it is in the process of getting fixed or simply overlooked. And other Rome work well but are slower it seams.
The display settings doesn't matter auto or manual its about the same. So devs what can we do to find the change or what can I do to help?

I'm running test 3 of 5.0.6. Today i read a book with fbreader for around 2hrs on it whilst on the train, had 2 30 minute phone conversations, around 20 texts, a dozen gtalk messages, and played blackjack for about 20 mins. i'm also using pershoots OCUV kernal, and after 11hrs without being plugged in I am at 75% battery. I'm happy with that.
I think it is a work in progress, as each new build comes out it's better. His testing builds are just that - testing. None of his release builds I have ever had an issue with either, although maybe my phone ue is a lot less than others I dunno. All i can say is i've never been tempted with another rom since early days on my magic phone Cyanogen rocks!

Nope, I have it on auto-detect, so quite bright when on the train and outdoors. I have setCPU (market, paid) running and set battery profiles - although I haven't hit them yet. I have it set to max 1.1ghz 100% to 50%, 998mhz from 50% to 40%, 776mhz from 40% to 30%, and under 30% to 500 and something.
I do use an app called autostarts (market, paid) and have set everything but system services/apps to not run on any kind of state change or startup. I use Advanced Task Killer to kill apps as soon as I finish with them.
But i've had all these for ages, I just think a big improvement on the last release test 3
Nandroid your existing and try out test3.
I've been experiencing the same symptoms with my battery usage generally dominated by the display. I'm using a UV kernel currently (intersectravens) so we will see if the same happens.
KingKlicks's DESIRE rom doesnt have the same problem it seems and the battery usage is much better.
Wondering if there is a underlying issue.
after .6 test 3 the battery has improved decently, still the display is hogging battery life more so than in the sense rom
Same thing here... Display totally kills the battery with CM5.0.5.3 and OC/UV kernel. Phone rarely lasts over a day with moderate to low usage...
Without usage I can barely get a days use :s
I get the impression that its not the display. I can have 50% display usage, sleep my phone while playing a MP3 and then have more than 50% usage... suggesting that its either he display+something in one category , or there is a bug.
The stock ROM always showed display at the highest usage also. I'm not saying that there isn't an issue, but remember that those numbers are all relative.
I'll say this: I charge nightly to prevent my battery "deep cycling"....That being said I un-plug at 8am and plug-in at about 11p-12a, I use my phone a TON.....usually when I plug in I have about 45-55%.....Not bad at all.....
I originally thought display being the main battery hog was a bad thing.....Then I thought about it a bit......
Would you rather the "system" use more batt? Cell Stand by?
Display (by all rights) should use most battery. More usage=Less time with a fully charged battery.....
Im using CM 5.0.5.3 and I switched Roms after using the stock for 3 months. As soon as I moved to CM I immediatly noticed the battery life was lower than before. I hope you find an issue to this problem ASAP.......I love your ROMs CM, but I love my battery life even more
Good luck with this !!
"display" = gpu acceleration and actual amoled power
Something else i just noticed, very odd. I had 41% display and 23% spotify.... i had been playing for music for a while (offline only). When i quit the spotify app... the entry from the battery usage vanished and display took a spike to 65% ish... really odd. Almost display is showing usage for a group of things.
What? How ? I get 6 hours maybe 7 if I'm lucky out of my battery.... even b4 my nexus was rooted ... how r u guys gettin 24

Ignore any figures people quote - battery life is always relative. One persons 'usual' usage is different than yours. A friend of mine brings his N1 to works and it sits on his desk syncing email - he gets 1 full day.
I bring mine, sync 2 accounts, play a lot of podcasts, have a RSS syncer going and use twitter and FB loads, i get a LOT less.
Dont worry to much, your usage figures are pretty normal depending on your usage patterns.
They say your mileage may vary for a reason
Battery Life
My Battery life has always sucked. Maybe I should buy a new Battery?
If I take my phone off the charger at 7:30, and don't plug it in all day, then I will be at about 30% or less by the time I get home at around 5:30. Unless I don't use it. But I use my phone to play stream music pretty much all day. Or at least 4 hours. One day I forgot my USB cable and I was below 20% by 3:00.
It is still better than iSuck, I mean iPhone, and worse than a BlackBerry. I have electricity everywhere though, a car charger, and an extra battery is like 25$?
So what is the big deal? You have the equivalent of a desktop computer from like 2002 in your pocked running off of a batter the size of a credit card, how long do you really want the thing to last anyway?

Battery Problem & The best rom?

Hi
When my phone is off the charger it takes about 4 hours.
When the phone is charging takes about 2 hours.
If the phone after charging seven hours after full discharge is not no use
I am using a custom ROM Forum
And in all custom ROMs have this problem
One tips off
What's the best ROM for this phone ???

How old is the battery? They last about 18-30 months, so most Rezound's should have had the battery replaced at least once... I recommend Laza for solid replacements.
What ROM are you using? In general, the more basic the ROM, the better the battery life, Plain-Andy, Evervolv, and CM are usually pretty good on battery but sacrifice features. Other than that general battery saving things are very helpful, disable Google Now, Location Services, GPS, LTE, etc. Some battery saving tools like JuiceDefender have varying amounts of benefit for users, some see a significant difference, others little or none.
You should also look at Wakelock Detector and GSAM Battery Monitor (plus it's root companion) will let you know if something is not working correctly, holding the device awake, or waking it much more than it should.
Remember the Rezound is a first generation LTE device, it is very hard on battery and getting more than 2 hours of screen on time is considered very good for the Rez, even with a new battery and everything is working smoothly. For the best battery experience on the Rez, look into an extended battery, or multiple standard batteries and a stand-alone charger.

Make sure you have LTE disabled, your network mode should be WCDMA Preferred, GSM Auto, or GSM Only, leaving it in Global Mode can keep the LTE radio constantly searching for signal it will never find... this will make a big difference. I also recommend one or both of the tools I mentioned earlier to see what is actually draining the battery.

why is the battery life so poor?

I got an LG G5 2 weeks ago and the battery has been outrageously bad. I bought it used and the owned has owned it for 2 to 3 months. There is very little standby drain and the phone is cold to the touch within minutes. Overnight drain is around 10 to 12 percent with always on display which is normal considering the 1 percent per hour loss plus the normal overnight drain. However when I turn the screen on the screen on time is very poor only about 2.5 hrs to 3 hours. The screen brightness is set 20 to 40 percent no auto brightness. There appears to be nothing draining the battery with the screen being the biggest battery draining. I have location nfc Bluetooth and LTE turned off. Along with touch sounds and touch vibration but toggling these settings makes no difference. Its impossible to find out more because I have no root. If this battery continues to be this poor I'm going to be selling it because I cannot stand having to charge twice a day even with quickcharge 3.0 old xiaomi redmi note 3 lasted 2 to 3 times longer on the battery. Any ideas what could be eating my battery?
Hi
I get 4 to 5 hours screen on time and I use my brightness at 75% to 100%, never as low as 20-40% it's too dark.
What apps do you use when you do have the screen on? Maps and games will drop you to 2-3 hours screen on time like all phones, but normal apps (excluding snapchat) will give you 4-5 SOT.
I would turn off always on display, you won't miss it.
Eeeeh , your Android system and android Os are high , screen should consumpt most of the battery about 30-40% mine does 34% with 35% brightness and Phone idle 22% my android system at 9% android Os 6% , if you dont game you get nearly 1 day life from your battery but if you do you need 2-3 timers charging per day , also if you use Data it just sucks the battery like vacum. So there is a drain in your system but its true lg g5 consumps a lot in order to give you performance in priority and not power saving. Dont forget G5s are the only high range phone that you can swip your battery with no deal , they are giving you that feature , Use it!!! You can grab up to 3600mah (2800 stock) extended capacity battery with a wall charger from ebay really cheap and never again have a battery problem. Also this batterys are lithium ones , i saw in your pic 10% i suggest not to go below 20% you are killing really fast lithium batterys if you decharge them!!!

Always on display barely drains any battery. I use apps such as facebook, text messaging, messenger, instagram, chrome, etc. I rarely play games because the second I open a game the battery life is only about 1.5 hours sot.
Well Facebook and messenger should be a couple of alarm bells when talking about battery life surely? Also, you bought it second hand, you have no idea how the previous owner treated the battery in the time they had it no matter how short a period it was.

Hello friends
I have a problem with battery and also unable to turn on the WiFi after update.
I just bought my brand new G5 H860 TWN and updated it, which cause the whole device to malfunction.
please correct me if I'm mistaken. An update is meant to improve the functionality of a device not to destroy it.
Apart from this problem the interesting thing is that non of the LG customer cares know whats causing the problem,
A word of advice to LG. Please Do not make something that you don't know **** about.
yours sincerely
have nice day.

Thanks for your advise my friend, factory resetting the device was the first thing i did, but i did not solve the issue.
i have tried the following:
-Flash other ROMs from different countries for H860
-booted the device into safe mode and tried to enable the WiFi and etc.
my WiFi MAC is set to 02:00:00:00:00:00 and it means that WiFi has not been detected by android. Also the Bluetooth address is defined as "unavailable".
and the worst of all is its battery drain issue which kill my battery within 5 hours in standby mode, while i can not notice any abnormal battery consumption in "BATTERY USE DETAILS" section in Battery usage setting. this probably means that some other consumer(perhaps the WiFi) uses the battery without being listed.

H860? H860 haven't got root nor custom ROM yet. Bootloader of H860's still locked.
I've got a brand new LG G5 which I have been using since Thursday and I honestly can say it sucks big time compared to my 2 year old Z3 which can easily get me 4 hrs SoD on mixed usage. Using the exact same set up of apps, location and wifi/mobile use, I am struggling to see more than 2.5hrs SoD with the G5. Honestly, it just drains battery like no tomorrow and this is fresh battery... I dread to think what it will be like in 2 years. Sony made a lot of mistakes but the Z3 really excelled...

[LF Kernel Recommendation] S9+ (Exynos) Battery drain

Good morning good evening and good night everyone,
As the title says, I'm looking for any recent kernels for an s9+ with solid battery life improvement, with the current stock android 10 ROM I get 4 to 5 hours of SOT with medium work load.
I've looked into the kernels and roms available on the boards but I need a solid recommendation, preferably from experience.
Thanks in advance

People should change their behavior not kernels I mean i do agree that any custom kernel, rom always gives better battery life, BUT end user is the cause of bad battery life, i often notice people have turned on EVERYTHING they can, NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, Data... why???? if you have wifi-turn off data, if you ave data turn off wifi. If you don't have anything connected to Bluetooht-turn it off. Lower your screen brightness, many people use SUCH A HIGH brightness it burns their retinas. With Every phone i had last 5 years i need to charge battery every 3rd, sometimes 4th day. But i dont live in phone. I do have computer, phone is phone not replacement for computer. My words may sound like nonsense for nolifers who lives in phones (facebook, instagram and so on), but that's truth.
So to answer your question - ANY custom rom with custom kernel will be better then stock. Also make sure your resolution is fullHD not maximum, that helps too, and try lowering brightness even tiny bit. screen is biggest power consumption (if not gaming, but people use consoles for gaming)

I totally expect to drain my battery when I'm on a workload, but there's a discrepancy with my work load and battery usage, sometimes the phone sits idle and it eats 10 to 15% in an hour (no always on display or anything else). I've never been a guy of irresponsible phone usage either, I like to keep track of what my phone is doing and I usually turn off all the extras i'm not using (it's second nature to me to do so just like how you would check if your keys are there every once in a while). I'm not looking for a miracle kernel that saves battery even when i'm using my phone irresponsibly. I'm just looking for a well rounded efficient experience with my phone which doesn't get me through the day.
Thanks a lot for your answer and do you have any specific custom rom names or kernels that you've tested and would suggest, please?

Battery life - discussion

How are people finding this huge 5000mah battery?
In all honesty, I was expecting a little better performance. Perhaps it's still too early to tell but I'm on my 3rd battery cycle, have "balanced" battery mode active, power saving feature applied to most apps other than essentials, don't have Facebook installed etc. Have rooted and also Universal Doze for magisk installed.
I'm currently on 10% with 5hr30min SOT. Granted, I have been listening to Spotify today but over WiFi.
Just doesn't seem to be blowing me away and not feeling like my battery is 25% bigger than my previous Xperia 1 ii, with the exact same setup/general usage. If anything feels the same size, maybe even less?!
Used BetterBatteryStats and nothing seems out of place there.
Will continue to monitor. Still extremely happy with this phone.
Hmm so quick update, I had Dual WiFi (blend of 2g/5ghz network) enabled previously however today it's now disabled.
I'm currently on 45 mins SOT and still at 97% battery!!
Anyone else any experience with this? I haven't changed any apps but seems this setting may have been the cause of high drain for me....
Will continue to monitor....
My battery life has been pretty good after a few cycles
Not bad. I keep it on mobile data most of the time. And i charge it only to 90% with a 500mAh charger. And i do have Facebook app, a Garmin smart watch and many synced accounts that run in the background
Not bad at all IMO. Received the phone today and it was at around 40 percent. Haven't charged yet. Refresh rate is on auto.

Will continue to monitor. Still extremely happy with this phone.

Are you more satisfied with the ZenFone 7 than with the Xperia 1 II?
How does the loudspeaker compares?
Im in doubt between the two.

Overall, yeah I'm very happy with this phone.
Comparing the two:
- the speakers were better on the Xperia, front facing always wins as avoids you accidentally covering the bottom firing one up on the Zenfone plus the top earpiece one isn't great. But, it's still good enough and they sound decent to keep me happy
- the less wider feel on the Xperia was also very nice but I really don't mind the feel of the zenfonr
- the camera on the Xperia was very good, but I just didn't feel like I was amazed by the point and click usage. Which I know it was really aimed for Pro users, but still....
- for the Zenfone I love the feel of it. A very fast phone, great camera, I'm a big fan of the flip camera, very good selfies (more concerned about video calls as the Xperia has a horrible smoothening effect which they didn't fix)
-the led on the Xperia was very nice whereas there's not as many colours on the Zenfone
Ultimately one of the biggest factors for me is rom and gcam development. It was virtually non existent for the Xperia but I enjoy it too much to sacrifice it. Already there is a decent gcam for zenfone and havoc & omnirom are being worked on
So I guess it boils down to what matters the most to you. Both very good options to be honest!
My first cycle from 100% down to 0% (won't be doing this often). Auto refresh, mainly on wifi (95%), AOD off, balanced profile. Not bad > 7 hour SOT.
Edit: don't know why PNG screenies aren't working with attachments :/

Auto refresh rate as I said.
I'm gonna try turning wifi off and see how long the SOT is from 100%-0% using just 4G (5G is off as my carrier doesn't support it).
Might try forcing 90Hz on a separate occasion too.
5 hr 53 min SOT ON dual sim 4G only.
battery life is good. not as good as zen 6. However its a all day phone. Charges really fast. Fastest charge so far.
90Hz is noticeable.. Keep your NFC , Bluetooth and especially Location off to save allot more battery..
Overal the phone is a winner .. only major peoblem.. I cant seem find ANY info to get 4g or even 5g here in USA> I thin this phone is NOT compatible for USA cell bands.. I even brought it to att store and they couldnt ge it to work past 3g.
This battery could be better, Asus need optimize better the kernel. I have bad performance on game Genshin impact (drop frames) and bad standby, 6h it goes 3,5%, on my motorola edge plus it goes 1% with the same condition.
I had pretty bad standby at first but then I disabled all battery optimizations and got great standby. I think "Optiflex" was the cause of it. Just turn it off.

Are you on Balanced profile still? And is Adaptive Battery enabled or disabled? Optiflex is meant to "saves battery on standby" too lol

The only battery saving setting I still have enabled is "hibernate apps" under battery settings. Optiflex, adaptive battery, detect battery-draining apps all off. Using balanced power settings but I'm mostly on 90Hz.

From using about 1% per hour to about 2% in 8 hours sleep. Check your APN also, I've seen some mention the phone does not use the right one automatically.
Going from the Zenfone 6 to this Zenfone 7, there is certainly a slight drop in battery endurance. The better chipset/hardware etc I don't feel explains the difference but it won't put me off the phone.
Just wish phone batteries would massively improve!
