I have moaned in the past about the rapid pace of Android OS development, and the usual implication of buying a new phone is you forced to upgrade android, but going from Android 6 to 8, looks like its going to be brutal for me, and hard decisions to be made.
On my old S7 phone running Android6, I have the following working reasonably well.
Xposed
Instagram made useable by xposed (app without it is horrible)
Same with snapchat
Various privacy enhancements thanks to xposed
Anag app works perfectly.
Apps mostly honour auto sync setting
However titanium backup only barely functions, it seems it only works properly with supersu which is considered obsolete these days, this app last worked properly on my s5.
Using android 9, there is no xposed at all, to me having no xposed on android is like going out in the street naked.
Using android 8, xposed is in beta, initially it seemed stable, but I have noticed the contacts app goes crazy and unstable as well as phone app after 2-3 days uptime if xposed is enabled on phone.
Some xposed modules have become abandonware and no longer work on Android 8
Some apps including Anag which has no alternative app have become abandonware and dont work properly or at all on Android 8.
Auto sync is disabled on the phone yet I keep getting notifications from apps, related to background sync activity they are doing, e.g. dominoes apps downloads an advert, and sends me a notification asking me if I am hungry to order some pizzas (never ever seen it do this on android 6), various other apps having similar type behaviours, just 10 mins ago backgrounds hd sent me a notification to inform me its downloaded new backgrounds, how has it done this when I havent gave it permission to background sync? ,either the auto sync setting is broken or there is some new feature in newer android that allows apps to spam you. I suspect its the latter, as I think even with auto sync enabled on android 6 I wasnt getting all this app spam.
The problem is this, new phone hardware is nice, my newest phone is lightning fast compared to my s7. But ultimately its the software that makes the phone. Sadly there is no Android 6 for the oneplus6, I dont expect much sympathy on the XDA community as the majority of people here seem happy to always jump on the latest builds of android without a second thought, often beta/alpha builds to boot. But felt like I needed to rant.
I dont know what I am going to do moving forward, I will probably test OOS 8.x, just to rule out custom rom issues, and if issues persist I can forsee myself selling the phone and buying an older model that still is faster (but wont be as fast) just so I can run android 6. I wonder if anyone else has ever deliberately avoided latest model phones to keep old android.
Its becoming evident to me, that many developers cannot keep up with the pace of android updates, so we get this happening, apps becoming abandonware, and users like myself either have to find replacement apps or accept to lose features on their phone. I wonder if IOS has these issues or if that has full backward compatibility that keeps old apps working. I wouldnt be unhappy if e.g. new android major releases were every 2 years with 5 years security support for each release as well. But a sane software support policy goes against google's policies.
Its kind of interesting as we have many news articles about the problem of android fragmentation as such, and often these articles blame everyone except google, they blame end users, they blame phone manufacturers, and they blame mobile carriers, but they never consider the problem might be google simply releasing new versions of android too rapidly.
Hello,
after many years of using the iPhone, the time has come for android, I bought samsung s9 + (exynos, duos). I really care about privacy (as in most of us) and read that uploading the following will help me achieve a bit more privacy. I want to upload the following:
- LineageOS,
- Block ads with Lock
- Control your traffic with NetGuard
- Tor for Android with Orbot
- Manage your apps' permissions with XPrivacyLua
and now a few questions for you:
1 - is there anything else I can do to increase my privacy
2 - is the speed of LineageOS better / worse than on the official android?
3 - if I host LinageOS, do I guarantee it? how do I make a back-up, I think it's not going to happen on the site, I've changed something in the files, how does it look like?
4 - is the camera / photo software as good as on the official android?
5 - I have an android 8, is it worth updating to android 9?
I will be really grateful for your help, because as a long-time user of an iphone for an android I have no clue, I greet everyone
Hi,
I'm looking a way to enable AHSA protocol to device that are on official Android 10 with official updates from manufacturer
Last year Google has annouced Android 10 will support Hearing Aids with ASHA Protocol, specification are open, but i think integration to Android 10 phone is not mandatory
I have a Oneplus 5 and recently Android 10 has been released out to this device by OnePlus
Sadly, i can't stream music directly to my hearing aids.
As far i know Pixel 3 and Samsung devices are compatible, i've tested with a Samsung S10e and this is working great.
Google provide a technical specification for ASHA Protocol, i dont know if this for dev or something ? https://source.android.com/devices/bluetooth/asha
So what i've found so far when playing around with my OnePlus 5 :
- I've decompilled the bluetooth apk from my OnePlus 5 phone and there some files related to hearing aids in the bluetooth apk bluetooth.app/sources/com/android/bluetooth/hearingaid
- Found a file text in /System/etc/bluetooth/
in bt_profile.conf at the end of the file
Code:
#Hearing Aid profile and its configurable features
# hearing_aid_support with default value false
[HEARING_AID]
[B]hearing_aid_support = false[/B]
I've rooted my device with Magisk and i've tried to change to "true" and reboot but changes are reverted back maybe because /system is read-only ?
i want to know if someone can dump the file from a pixel 3 or a Samsung S10/S20 device and share here ?
@johnstinks
Only to have mentioned it:
Android's hearing-aid setting is stored in Android's settings.db under System: It's either 0 or 1.
https://android.googlesource.com/pl...e/+/master/core/res/res/values/config.xml#131
Try setting this to true using an overlay?
sorry .., i've no idea how to do, i've never compiled a rom or anthing
my message is a bottle sent to the sea, sharing idea to enable / force the support for hearing aids for phones on Android 10.
I would also be interested in a way to activate this in custom roms. I'm waiting until it's more widely available before I get my next phone
Bumping up this thread. My dad just received his new hearing aid, and initially the audiologist told us direct streaming is only supported on iPhone, but upon closer checking, I found that selected Android phone models are also supported. Sadly, his Huawei P30 Pro is not on the list.
I tried pairing his hearing aids with my sister's Samsung S10 and it worked like a charm, it even has the hearing aid icon beside the bluetooth device. Although the P30 Pro supports Bluetooth 5 and has Android 10, it doesn't recognise the hearing aid.
Hoping that some experts here can share if it's as simple as rooting and enabling the setting, or is there something in the bluetooth APK that needs rework in order for the hearing aid function to work?
Hello,
I need this feature really, too.
Does someone got a way to enable it on a rooted smartphone?
Best regards
bump !
any idea, maybe with magisk module we can enable the feature ?
Best Regards.
Trying to find the solution for my son with his Xiaomi Black Shark 3, anyway so far I didnt find any ASHA solution, so I am going to check Phonak hearing aid which should support BT connection via A2DP and HFP, so it could be temoporary workaround without ASHA support on phone (seems to just on few Samsung and Google models at the moment). Anyway ASHA is final solution of course, all advices would be really appriciated.
On my OnePlus 5 i tried a custom rom called "ArrowOS" this rom does have a experimental flag "settings_bluetooth_hearing_aid" i enabled this flag and i have hearing aids support !
Now i have to found what actually does this flag when i enable it. ( what file is modified)
here some link from the android source code where the flag is found:
if we understand how to enable the feature we can maybe create a magisk module that enable ASHA for any phone on Android 10-11

Hi I just came across this post as I also want to enable ASHA on an 5t. Does it still work for you with ArrowOS?
know how to enable this feature???
I'm adding my name to the list of folks that want to do this as well (I have an Umidigi A9, but it sounds like the same basic issue applies).

This would be really great.
Following. Thix is really interesting
As ASHA is mainly enabled on the software side (given your hardware matches the requirements), does this mean that custom ROMs on Android >= 10 supports hearing aids streaming ?
As soon as I received my Widex Moment headset, I have been using a hearing aid since I was a child, I feel very sad living in a world where technology was for everyone, adding walls for the sake of money, back to top, I also use the Redmi Note 9 Pro which uses Android 10 and BLE but doesn't pair, I tried a lot of things. Why should I have to buy a new phone instead of fixing it, 2 years have passed and they have not fix it or update about this. I have spoken with Widex & Xiaomi support, the 1st one told me that will add more mobile devices to his list, the 2nd one seems not to be so interested since he does not reply to my email. Once again I feel so bad, I hope someone will can give a solution to that.
I will try Service and Feedback from my phone also

Below adb command enabled the hearing aid option in my rooted realme x running on Android 11 device but could not stream audio to hearing.
adb shell settings put global settings_bluetooth_hearing_aid true

In the same boat here, with same phone. I am about to get cochlear implant activated.
The problem with P30Pro afaik is that Huawei have disabled unlocking of our phones meaning we will never get custom roms or install 'hacks' which is pretty ****.
One would think after all these years of ASHA protocol spec being available it would be implemented more, but no. Outside Pixel, Samsung and Apple its pretty dead in the water and I don't know why since it appears to be just editing one or two lines of code to activate it.
At this stage we can only petition to Huawei to enable this feature.

My phone is Root, (twrp and Magisk )
Hello XDA Developers ,
Please can anyone help in Modifying Messenger APK to force enable OLD Chat Heads instead of the annoying buggy "Bubbles" API in Andorid 11?
a MOD Apk or a Magisk Mod or something .. it's really very important to me and i think all FB Messenger users are crying for that !
I just did it
[APP][MOD] Messenger Old Chat Heads for Android 11+
With Android 11 came the bubble functionality, which displaced the chat head mechanism in Messenger. Unfortunately bubbles are very buggy - for example on OnePlus phones they are responsible for freezing the whole phone. That's why I've created...

First off, I hope I'm posting this in the correct area
This may be a fantasy, but I will state my idea, and if you know any way of making it a reality, OR if it already exists, I would really appreciate your advice & help!
The idea is basically a super lightweight custom ROM that would work (be able to be flashed on) on a lot of different devices. (multiple android phones & tablets)
Preferably, I want it to run on the most stable version of Android
No play store, only a predetermined set of apps to be installed along with the ROM
No stock browser or any native apps that have a browser built-in
Basically, there are a few applications for this product, 2 that come to mind.
The most obvious, Kid friendly - I know about the parental controls available, I want something 'bulletproof'.
To ensure productivity and reduce distractions among employees.
I would also want a browser that is whitelist-based that can have the whitelist updated remotely, every time the browser connects to the internet, (either on startup of the app or in the background) it would check the whitelist and update itself with the new definitions. Ideally, I would want a Chrome-based browser with a built-in adblocker.
I know the lines are blurred from custom ROM to custom apps. I hope I'm not dreaming of a unicorn
(The native apps preferred would be The Camera, Messages and phone apps)
I think what you looking for is "Kids Space" from oxygenOs and colorOs 13. Now even I'm looking for the same for older oneplus devices.
You had any luck with it?
