Screen flickering after touchscreen + display replacement on I9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
I have dropped my S3 (by accident, of course) and managed to completely break the touchscreen and display (no image). I ordered a replacement screen for i9300 (marketed as original) and replaced it myself (not the first time I replace screens on embedded devices). At first everything worked fine but with increasing frequency I get flickering and a fade out effect on the screen. A video will illustrate this better:
I've looked into the ribbon connector that connects the screen to the motherboard and cleaned it with alcohol and it made no difference.
The flickering effect appears also in the bootloader or recovery, so it's not android related. I also deactivated GPU rendering in Developer Settings.
My question is - has anyone seen this before? Am I looking at a bad replacement screen? Maybe a bad board (something that might have broken when it fell)? A bad contact?
I'd like to fix it somehow but I don't know where to start.
Thanks

I might be just speculating, but i truly believe that is something wrong with the GPU. The contacts have nothing to do with it, so the only possibility is that the balls have cracked. That is my educated opinion. You could go and get your PCB reballed at any good GSM service.

Thank you for your input. Would the effect happen even in bootloader (e.g. is the GPU the only component talking to the display)? Also, if I were to connect a HDMI (through a dock) should I expect to see the same behavior? I guess that if it behaves the same way, then yes, it's certanly something on the motherboard that's broken...

Yes, because the GPU's only task is to turn on pixels on the display to make Graphics. It will happen even via HDMI (MHL). There is no way to bypass the GPU. Assuming that display is 100% working. Try and see if the display is not defective and get a replacement.

Mirrored Display
hello XDA community,
I have here an imate Jasjar which after a screen upgrade is displaying the image reversed. It did not begin like this,
Upon first booting up the device after screen upgrade, all was fine, screen displayed normally. About a week after this, the screen began flickering, not on/off, but instead, reversing the image shown on the screen. (a mirror) effect. I did not know what to make of this. I delt with it best I could.
A day or two after this flickering began, the screen began to remain in this reversed image mode, which I did not enjoy. The same day, I had dropped the JJ into a tub ( a pretty hard fall), but somehow, by the grace of god, the water failed to enter the inside of the Jasjar.
After the fall, I had noticed that the screen had stopped its flickring antics and remained normal for about a week and a half. It is now displaying a reversed image only.
I now am unsure of what to do, I searched throughout the XDA forums and discovered that performing a hard reset should repair this.
I suppose my main question is, is there a registry tweak I can perform to revert the displayed image back to its original state
Many thanks to all who respond.

as far as I know, both of your devices are probably dead. Back in the time I was repairing old Ipaq's the mirrow effect was epically called "The mirrow of death" and meant that the display controller (a chip) has failed.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you have many chances to bring them back. Maybe this is not your case, but anyway chances are slim.
thats actually a very interesting idea. If you can mirror them via software, you can fool the device into working again
solution ?
Any solution to this yet ?
Is anyone working on that brilliant idea of that mirroring software ?
I've been having the same problem for almost 6 months now. But for some reasons I am surviving with my O2 XDA EXEC. Now, I can hand my brick to friends without being concerned about my personal messages being read.
However, I have found something. When I charge my phone with a motorola charger, while on charger, the screen flips back to normal. So, my best bet- it is actually a tweeny weenie IC not doing what it is supposed to do.
mirror solution!
Tape the phone to your car's dash and use it as a H.U.D.!!!
hey.... maybe I am on to something here mmmm.....

Does anyone know how to make the PDA do this, I've searched everywhere for a software solution but to no avail.
I want to add a second screen to my PDA (piggybacking on the existing screen) but with an inverted display. This way I will have a normal touchscreen display for entering data and an inverted display for HUD use.
I'm aware that when this happens as a fault it is normally due to a loose display connection causing one of the outer contact to come loose, but I'd need to know which 'wire to cut' to force this fault.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IS my grafic chip broken

some time ago my samsung s2 started having problem. The main problem the unclear screen output. My question is whether the screen or the graphics chip is broken.
Sorry for my bad english
1. You should ask in Q&A
2. I would check tape of the display that connects to mainboard, probably it's broken. If GPU were, your CPU would be also, they are integrated and phone won't just boot. In worst case it will be display itself, I don't bet it's mainboard related.
3. Did you drop your device, it got wet (ex. holding it in your jacket in rain)?

[Q] Touchscreen unresponsive stripe - digitizer problem?

My Atrix's screen has become unresponsive in a vertical column (if the phone is in portrait mode) that lines up about with the W, E, and S keys. Restarting fixed the problem for maybe 20 seconds or so after the phone became usable, but doesn't seem to have made a difference after about the third time or so. I also removed the battery and held down the power button for ~45 seconds and then put everything back together, which also seemed to have helped for a minute or less before the stripe became unresponsive again. I also restored to yesterday's backup a couple different times (CM 7.2 stable), which also temporarily helped.
So after a brief search, it seems that the digitizer may be the issue. Is there any way to tell for sure? At first it seemed like a software problem, but it could also just be the digitizer acting erratically because it's going out, so I'm not really sure, and I'd rather not attempt a repair that may not be necessary.

there are some screen tester apps on Play which you could use to see if, in fact, your digitizer is a problem.

Do you have any specific recommendations? I downloaded the touch test app from here (http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/touch-test) to see how much of the screen was misbehaving and discovered that it was a perfect stripe the whole way down, but because I'm not terribly knowledgeable about troubleshooting phone hardware, I don't know if that's telling me it's the digitizer or something else. I attached a screenshot that shows where the stripe is.

From what I've seen on here it does look like your digitizer is at fault. I have never had to change mine but there are plenty of posters on here who have and you can look at their experiences to assist you. Also, here's a video I found so you can see what you'll have to do. Good Luck!

That's unfortunate, but at least I know that's what's wrong. Thanks for your help!

Need some help, phone is dead, Vodafone playing silly buggers.

Hi guys,
Going to pick my Mum`s phone up from Vodafone today after it was placed in for repair and they stated it`ll be £150 to repair. She took it in as the phone started to bootloop, Samsung screen the reboot. She took it into Vodafone and they sent it off, the answer back was that the "chip behind the screen" was damaged and that was her fault and would cost £150 to repair.
Couple of question, what is the "chip behind the screen"?
If the chip is there what does it do and would it stop the phone from booting?
Is it repairable and if so could it be done at home cheaper?
Should I try a Samsung Service Center instead?
She said that she was having issues with the phone before it died, sluggishness, unresponsiveness and random reboots, then dead.
Cheers in advance guys,
Blinky
"Chip behind the screen" doesn't really mean much. I would ask them to be explicit. Since the screen covers 90% of the front of the phone, almost all the chips the phone has are behind the screen.
Sorry, I have just been informed that she was told it was the chip that controls the LCD screen? I would presume that if the touchscreen chip is dead then the phone would boot to the OS and you wouldn`t be able to control it and if the chip was good and the screen was knackered then you would not see the screen come on.
If the phone is stuck in a bootloop then wouldn`t that be a system board problem?
cheers
Blinky
yes

Well hang on.....
Its an SAMOLED not LCD, but thats not the main thing I need to identify here. Just FYI, the SAMOLED screen (Display Panel) and the touchscreen, although on this phone, mostly provided in a single unit - are actually 2 individual parts. You do not touch the display panel to get touch input.
Essentially from the outside in, you have:
1) Gorilla glass tough glass protector
2) Digitiser film (to translate electrical disturbances into input)
3) SAMOLED Panel (Display)
I don't really understand what chips control what so what VF are saying still seems ambiguous to me.
But a hardware failure could be picked up by the kernel drivers at boot. The kernel would see an error and a boot loop could ensue, definitely. It just depends on the fault.

[Q]flickring screen problem

hello, i broke my screen lately and i replaced it at a lab, after the repair my screen is sometimes flickering.
i think it was flickering from before the repair but after the repair it got worst,i am not sure.(if it was it was only at the top of the screen now..its every where)
does anyone have any ideas about the source of the problem ?
or if anyone know how to solve it even better
thank you for your help...
If still problem exist after screen replacement then I think there is problem in new screen, try again another screen if still it exist then may be there is serious problem with GRAPHIC IC ( I am not sure about this), You may have to change 220 in your Graphic IC which include soldering but seriously this is very(x3) risky, because any wrong thing can put your phone in nothing.
In case If you brought your screen from online site, then contact to seller and ask them for refund or another screen
Best of luck

first of all thank you for your reply,
as i said i replaced my screen at a cellphone lab so you think i should go there again and ask them to replace the screen?
as i also said its not happening all the time... it can be flickering for 15 min and then nothing for another hour ( on & off)
no way its just a loose cable/connector some where?

Stock ROM or custom one? Cause my screen flickers sometimes too, but I'm fairly sure it's due to adaptive backlight feature in most of the AOSP roms around
