[ATTENTION] Can't Modify Build.prop on CM7-based Rom - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day!
Hi!
I had my Sony Ericson W8 E16i (Android 2.1 Update-1) obtained from an old box...
I decided to upgrade it to Android 2.3.7 via custom rom (thru the help of GingerDX)...
Everything's fine.
Now, I can't edit the "build.prop"...
I want to edit the phone model from "X8" to "W8"...
And also, to edit and delete some lines...
But it always reverts back to the original build.prop of that custom rom every after reboot...
Here's the actions I've already done:
1. Copy build.prop on sdcard. Edit it the way i wanted. Move it to root directory then fix the permission. Then move to /system to replace the existing build.prop. After reboot, it reverts.
2. I created a flashable zip of the editted build.prop, after system boot, nothing has changed.
3. I edit the build.prop directly to /system directory then save it. (It creates .bak file for its backup after I save.) After reboot, it reverts back again to the original build.prop of the custom rom.
Additional info.:
The "GingerDX v031b" is a CM7-based rom.
Any other info should I be provided?
Please help.

[Q] Modifying framework-res.apk in GB Stock ROM

Just achieved root using azuzu's method and the fist thing I attempted was to get rid of the dull-dark backgrounds on the Stock ROM and use the bright blue backgrounds from the Xperia 1.6 days, which was also ported to 2.1
I modified the framework-res.apk on PC and used RootExplorer to overwrite the existing framework-res.apk but still I dont see any changes in the backgrounds. Any idea what's amiss? Here is a strp-by-step writ of what i did:
1. Use root explorer to copy the existing framework-res.zpk to /SDCARD/
2. Transferred the apk to PC, replaced the existing semc_bg.png and semc_general_bg in the archive.
3. Transferred the modified apk to sdcard.
4. Using root Explorer on the phone, copied the modified apk to /system/
5. Changed the permissions to match the original apk
6. Copied the modified apk from /system/ to /system/framework/ and overwritten the original apk
7. The file gets overwritten successfully - but there is no change in the system background images
Whare am i going wrong? AFAIK there is nothing wrong with the apk (I have learnt that an incorrect framework-res.apk can brick the phone!)
You also need to edit system/framework/SemcGeneralUxpRes.apk
Locate SemcGenericUxpRes.apk (system/framework) and SystemUI.apk (system/app).
They will also need to be modded for a full theme on GB.
*Edit- Lol, M_I ya beat me to it
Thanks @My_Immortal and AyDee.
I had checked the SystemUI.apk and there was nothing to edit in the package. Checking the SemcGenericUxpRes.apk now, will let y'all know soon!
It worked!!! Thanks guys...my UI looks much lore alive now! http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Also don't forget to replace the image for landscape mode too

@riginal : I worked out that bit myself, but thanks all the same.

[Q] Issues restoring framework-res.apk

Hey Guys,
I have been attempting to mod my framework-res.apk to try and add a percent battery icon (unsuccessfuly so far). Here is my issue, after finding that my modded framework file isnt working properly, I go to try and restore the original. After restoring the original I still get tons of FC's and the only way to get things back to normal is to restore my backup from CWM.
The method I am using to replace my framework-res.apk is to use a root explorer (ES File Manager) to copy the file to /system/ then from there I modify the permissions and then move the file to the framework folder, overwriting the existing file. After this, I reboot the phone.
My question is, why is my original framework-res.apk file causing force closes? It is starting to make me think that even my modded files are ok, but that the issue is arising in the manual transfer.
Sorry if the answer is posted elsewhere, I googled and was only finding issues with the apk not being compiled correctly, but that shouldnt be an issue with the original apk.
*EDIT* I figured it out. It appears it was because Jkay Deluxe was installed. I decided to reflash the rom and try with a fresh copy of the framework-res.apk and everything appears to be working now.

[Q]cm10 and build.prop edit

Hi everyone!
I am use cm10 fxp148 but I can't edit build.prop or anyone system file without my device stuck in bootlogo after reboot.
There is fxp kernel or rom issue?
And There are any fix?
I don't know if it was done on purpose or it's a bug, but every time you edit the system file on cm10, its permissions automatically change into rw-------. You have to check original ones before editing (for build.prop it's rw-r--r--) and set them again after you edit the file, but before reboot - if you don't change it before reboot, you won't be able to do it after it.

[Q] Modifying odexed framework

I have an SGH-i547c running stock rom. This is what I prefer. Needless to say, it is odexed
I needed to edit the AudioService.smali file in the framework.odex
I figured out how to deodex framework.odex and edit the AudioService.smali file from the "out" folder
I also figured out how to odex the folder back into a framework.odex file without any errors.
However, the original framework.odex file is 8502KB and the edited and re-odexed version is 8034KB and it does not work on my device. The device failed to boot after replacing with the smaller file..........I had to re-flash the stock /system with Odin as I could not gain enough permission to push the original framework.odex I had backed up, back to the device using ADB through stock recovery or download mode.
I only changed a couple values in the AudioService.smali file yet I tried re-odexing several times and the output file was always smaller than the original and would not work on device.
I found some tutorials on this online and I find them not very well explained, complicated and not specific to what I am trying to do.
What did I do wrong??
Can someone explain to me how to do this properly without having to go get a degree?
Thanks
