Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 - Will she run the newer apps ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
My first time posting here so bear with me.
I have had my SGS2 since new so about 4 years I guess.
And over the years as per normal certain apps won't run on her anymore as they require the later model phones / operating system.
I rooted the phone some years back.....and would like to know that if I am to update the operating system to KIT KAT, Jellybean or Marshmallow, will the phone run these latest applications ???
I have started to look at the various ways to update the software, but it seems to be a never ending mine field of advice and ideas.
The first stumbling block I cam across is that I can't make a Clockwork mod recovery as the software won't run n my old girl.
So....any advice is really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Loach

Just to clarify.....which version of the S2 do you have? Which Android version is it currently running? Are you running stock firmware or custom rom? Which apps don't function?
This is all information we need if we are going to be able to help you....

Thanks for replying.
My phone is rooted, but it is running the original software it came with - Gingerbread from memory.
The phone is Samsung Galaxy S II, and is the I9100 model.
Sometimes when I go to download apps at the store it says " not compatible with this device", so my question is if I update to a later operating system like - Kit Kat will it run these apps ??
Thanks again for replying.
Loach

Ah...I understand....
I had that issue with my old Galaxy W on gingerbread.....I think it was Nova Launcher that I wanted but didn't work.
You can easily upgrade via Odin, but I'm surprised you haven't had a software prompt to do so already......
The S2 started out with Gingerbread but got updated to Icecream Sandwich and then to Jellybean during its upgrade life cycle. Can you go to....
Settings>>About Phone
and copy here what it says for Model number (there are 20+ variants of the S2 so we need to make sure exactly which one it is), Baseband version and Build number.
Also let us know if the device has Carrier based software on it or if it is unbranded.

According to everything I've just read XWLSH is a JB firmware......
So....to update, simply flash with Odin then (to be on the safe side) after the flash, boot into recovery and wipe cache and data (factory reset).
Here's the link to the firmware.....
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/12748/I9100XWLSH_I9100XSALSA_XSA/
There is a download link for odin on that page.....and odin flash instructions (just in case you need them).
You can get the latest USB driver package here......
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591000424942512
Probably best to install them before trying the flash....even if you already have drivers on your pc/Laptop.
Rooting post flash, is a simple matter of using CF Root or PhilZ.......
CF has to be flashed with odin.
PhilZ *can* be flashed in the stock recovery.
Here's the link to the PhilZ thread.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
IMO.....The easier option of the two.
Just make sure you get the correct kernel version (should match the build number when you've flashed) and make sure to download the zip (not tar) version if you want to flash from recovery.
THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN ODIN FLASHING.......
1) NEVER attempt to flash if your battery is below 50% (fully charged is advised).
2) if you are using windows 7 or newer, right click the odin icon and run as administrator.
3) use task manager to end ALL Kies processes.
4) disable anti virus and firewall before flashing (obviously don't connect to the Internet during this time).
5) use (if available) the USB cable that came with the device.
6) the USB socket on the PC needs to be one that is connected directly to the main board.....usb hubs generally don't work.
7) NEVER detach the usb cable part way through the flash.....you WILL PERMANENTLY brick your device....wait until you get either the PASS or FAIL message in odin.....
The above will help to maximise your chances of a successful flash.....
Good luck fella.....see you on the other side......

European ROM on China Unicom branded Sgs 3

Hi,
I am looking into getting a European ROM running on the sgs3 I bought here in China.
I tried downloading the official Samsung rom from UK, but I failed during installation of the modem part. It rendered my phone useless, and it took hours getting it back up with the kies and the official Chinese rom.
I used the software called Odin i believe, to attempt the update.
To me, it seems as if it is not that easy, maybe due to the modem thing, but can anyone verify that this will never work?
The main reason for applying a different rom is, that it seems that none of the Google apps are going to work. I can't install them, but they won't run. The apps seem to load, put with no message, it closes and the phone returns to the previous screen.
Anyone with any input on this?

Same problem with me, how you solved your problem?
Hi,
I never solved the problem.
I must say, I have not been working on it either.
I have been searching and searching but have not been successful in finding a solution.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Huum, but you were able to install Google Play? I already installed twice but the app keeps crashing everytime that I try to open it.
And I must say; I was frustrated to realize that my SGS3 didn't came with a SD card on it.
Hi,
I was able to install it yes, but have the same problem as you. It starts to load, and suddenly it just disappears.
No cash message, no nothing. That is why I think this is a limitation that is put there on purpose.

Sort of fixed
Hi,
Just for an update.
I was looking into getting a european rom on to my phone, but ended up doing a ROOT instead, and then install Google Apps.
Everything is just the way I like them now
To root and install CWM (Needed to install the Google Apps), i followed this guide:
*Can't link to the guide due to forum policies. PM me, and I will give you the link
After having downloaded the software neccesary, it took about 30 seconds for my phone to be ready.
I then did more or less as this guide *Can't link to the guide due to forum policies. PM me, and I will give you the link says.
With the only exception, that I copied the Google Apps zip-file to the SD card from Windows explorer, and bootet into recovery mode by holding the HOME, VOLUME UP and POWER button at the same time, after having powered off my phone.
Now, all the apps are working as I have been used to.
To solve your Problem and install official rom from Samsung to your phone you need to buy Odin Mobile.
For Chinese phone, when you use computer with odin, there is something that is blocked on the Phone so you cannot install any firmware from odin using the pc.
With odin Mobile u can flash >>>> personnally i flashed the one of Samsung GS3 HK because i still want to have some chinese stuff in my phone as i like to have.. And work perfectly !
Hope it will help you ! cordially!

But what I have done, is to find the modem-file for installation, and I am now using a rom called Omega, currently a version 19.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663656
First off, I install the ROM, and afterwards, I install the modem.
Everything seems to be working just fine.
The Omega rom, is the official Samsung rom, with some "hacks" - during installation you are for instance asked if you want the complete thing, or if you want to leave out all bloatware.
Official Samsung will no longer be available OTA, as the updating process detects, that the phone has been altered.
I live in China and own a SGS3 bought here in china. What you have to do is flash a kernel that is compatible with TRIANGLE AWAY to reset to zero the flash counter on the phone. Then you should be able to flash any original Samsung ROM made for the SGS3. If it doesn't work, you might also have to flash the stock XLH1 modem. Then it should work.

Hello thank's for your support. Are you sure that it will work with a Unicom brandet S3? I tried to flash it before, after this it doesn't work anymore. So i had to go to Samsung service point and pay to recover it. Thanks'
solution
Hello all,
i found the solution. The Chinese S3 has another boot sector, so it can't be flashed by Odin with any other firmware.
I found in a Chinese forum how to make it.
First you have to root, this was no problem.
You have to install mobile odin, because mobile doesn't flash the boot image.
Now you can copy any firmware to sd card and flash.
Best Regards

Jelly Bean update via Kies

Have been an HTC user for a while but have made the jump to Samsung. I have a new SGS3, i last night routed using odin but have now realized that the device is till on ICS not JB, obviously as rooted the OTA will Not work, i have read on other posts about the possibility of updating via KIES, does any one know how to do this and if so could someone send a quick guide.
I am guessing the other option would be to unroot OTA update and reroot would this work? also if i went down this method would i have to re install all apps etc.
As always thanks in advance guys.

Kies and the suite journal of Samsung.
Among the many features it offers, the most important is precisely the one that allows you to update the firmware in the Galaxy.
The update can take place exclusively through USB connection.
The update procedure with kies may not be used if the phone has been modded (e.g. Presence of rom cooked or root).
With the firmware of large dimensions, the update times may vary considerably depending on the speed of adsl connection
if the procedure fails, you may need to restart from the beginning
is not possible to install firmware versions other than those laid down for the phone or go back ...
UPDATE via OTA As well as Kies, if the phone has been moddato (e.g. , presence of rom cooked or root) may not work.

UPDATE via ODIN
It is a update tool created by Samsung for internal use only and not intended for the general public.
On the web, you can still find some copies of the program.
Unlike Kies the updating procedure is completely manual, with the firmware that must be found.
Odin is a tool at a low level, precisely for this can be used in qualcunque condition, even in the presence of rom cooked or root.

Heimdall, compared with those already submitted, and the only tool not created by Samsung.
The author and Benjamin Dobell, independent developer.
Unlike the other, can also be used on Linux, as well as Windows and OS X.
As Odin, and Heimdall is a tool that acts at a low level and then able to update the Galaxy regardless of the presence of rom cooked or root permissions enabled.

rumors are that the official jb will come next month so you may want to hold on for it instead

[Q] It's been a while

Hello,
I rooted my S2 quite a while ago now and wanted to unrrot it to update the firmware, but........I cant seem to find my stock firmware and am uncertain of how I should unroot it as I cant fully remember how I rooted it in the first place.
From trawling through one of my external hdd's I found Odin, so I assume I used that. Having installed it, it looks pretty familiar so i'll assume thats where I start.
The info from my phone is.
GT - I9100
Android Version 2.3.3
Baseband - I9100NEKF2
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7 - I9100XWKL1 - CL809037 [email protected] 12 #2
Build number Gingerbread.XWKF4
I hate to be the person to make a new thread but I have tried doing lots of searches but not wanting to brick my phone has made me want to double check with an adult first.
I download GT_I9000_XFJV5_XXJVQ_OXFJV1_Sbl assuming that that's the correct stock firmware but im soo uncertain I dont want to risk doing anything wrong.
So can anybody point me in the right direction?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
- Rich
Flashing a stock firmware with Odin from sammobile would unroot it anyhow.
Go there and fill in the 4 bits of info.

Can i flash any stock firmware to get rid of my root or does it have to be the same as I already have installed?
You can flash gb/ics or jb (if its out for your region).

Cheer mate.
Just downloading 4.1.2 from SamMobile as I type.
Will post up if i struggle with anything else.
I assume backing up everything on my phone is worth doing before i proceed.
You could/should with titanium back up pro.
Seriously consider flashing via Mobile Odin.

Yes....while you still have root (I assume you have CWM recovery too) make a nandroid backup of your existing setup that you can reuse if things don't go as planned.....at the very least you should backup any personal data (photos, videos, contacts etc) before you start......
And as another poster has mentioned, using mobile odin will be easier than using the PC version.....
Edit....just clicked you said you want to un root......
The nandroid backup can't be used after that, so as mentioned above....use titanium backup....but just for your apps, not their data. Using app generated data from one OS generation in another *can* cause problems like app force closes...reboots etc....

Having just installed samsung kies. it's prompted me to update. could i just update it this way or am I likely to run into problems?
Depends how you rooted....
If you used a method like cf-root and retained a stock recovery image, it might do it successfully. If you rooted by installing a rooting kernel, there *could* be issues. Kies nearly bricked my wifes S2 when I updated it from GB to ICS, and her phone hadn't been modified at all at that point....
The choice is yours, but my personal experience would make me think twice before using it again......
Sent from my Rooted, De bloated Stock JB powered S2 via PhilZ kernel and Tapatalk 2....
I beleive i rooted with a rooting kernel so ill give it a miss. I've backed my phone up with titanium backup. Just waiting for kies to finish backing up everything else then i'll get odin mobile pro. Using this method can I install the firmware gastonw linked me to and still retain my root?
Sorry for all of the questions but jailbreaking ipads has made me a bit lazy with the simple plug in, click jailbreak and enjoy process.
Good idea to use M.O. pro. Yes you can retain root, but you have to enable that option from within the app. M.O. will also need to download and install a "FlashKernel" in order to work, so it'd be best to enable your wi fi connection before you start. You should also remember to enable the "in app" wipes as well.
What M.O. won't do, is install ClockworkMod recovery, so if you need it, you'll have to flash it afterwards. But that can be covered later.
Having used M.O myself, feel free to ask about anything you're not sure about, and I'll help if I can.....
Good luck

Installed the new firmware, everything went well, couldnt be happier with it. Open up kies to restore me stuff but all folders are now empty, nothing available to restore, open up titanium and it's the same. my backups dont seem to have worked??!!
Fudge knows
Any ideas?
A bit annoyed as I could have done with some of my photo's, apps and text message history.
Afraid I can't answer for Kies....limited (bad) experience with it.....
As for your TiBu backup, how are you trying to access it? If you are trying to access the backup folder with the stock file manager, it may have issues. TiBu created it, you need TiBu to access it.
And for your apps...open play store, press menu, select 'my apps' and scroll sideways from 'installed' to 'all'......then you can re install whatever you want from the list without having to search

Hi Thank you for hosting the firmware
I have tried this N950U1UEU1AQI5_N950U1OYM1AQI5_ATT_7.1.1_FULL.zip (3,0G) but you posted that as ATT. (there is no ATT bloatware at all)
I figured it out by N950U1 = No Carrier and N950U is carrier like verzon/ATT/TMB
this is Unlocked US version Note 8 like SM-N950UZKAXAA and sold by Samsung Direct or best buy so far .

"Full Firmware" is firmware 4 file or 5 file (BL_ , AP_ , CP_ , CSC_ , EFS_ ,...), sometimes is a single file (All_...) and include the standard PIT files. When you flash "Full Firmware" & PIT files, all devices partitions will be repair, re-fomat and factory reset devices.
When do need "Full Firmware" ?

There's already a thread for the SM-N950F/DS Model:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/how-to/official-stock-firmware-update-odin-t3677072
The correct unlocked (SM-N950U1) version can be found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...covery-odin-recovery-software-t3671615/page22
The carrier versions of the Unlocked (SM-N950U1) "aqh9"...only differ by including the product activation information that the SIM provides during provisioning. Flashing the XAA unlocked firmware and inserting SIM is the same as flashing any of the SM-N950U1 brand labeled firmware like SPR AQH9...

Canada firmware link points to AT&T firmware. Could someone please update that link? I will be sending my phone in for refund (to get the N950F), and want to completely reset it.
Side note, anyone know how they check airtime usage to determine return eligibility? I'm well under 30 minutes, but I'm curious regardless.

Is it possible that anyone can download this for me?
Edit: obsolet, retourned to shop with light bleeding on the hole left side.

Edit config file for UMS/patch from 0 to 1...and if regular Odin fails...use Prince Comsy's Odin...if still fail download firmware again...if still fail, boot to recovery and perform factory reset then flash again
Could I flash SM-N950F firmware on SM-N950N device? I need to change csc from Korea to Vietnam

Nope. Apparently, when I installed the Unlocked firmware, it automatically partitioned my device. I had to do a factory reset to recover my 128gb storage.
It actually worked. Thanks anyway. I'm actually learning a lot. First time customizing an Android device (just changed from an iPhone 6 Plus).

Glad you figured it out! Welcome to Android.
So, would I be able to use this process to load the Verizon firmware to my Unlocked Note 8? I bought an unlocked version from Samsung, but there are several features that seem to be unavailable (visual voicemail, accessing internet when on phone, etc.). Would loading the Verizon firmware fix that issue for me?
Verizon tech support has not been of much use trying to get these features working on my unlocked phone, so I'm hoping that if it "magically" becomes a Verizon phone, the features would start working.
Note that I have tried Shortcut Master to get around these limitations, but no luck so far.

Yes, download and flash the latest VZW firmware in Odin (all four files) and all will be well.
Deleted.
I can't get back to stock as I used the first method of samfail and now my bootloader reflects aqh8 and my system/baseband reflects aq15. I tried using Odin and get device mismatch errors I tried using kies it doesn't recognize my phone even in emergency mode. Any ideas how to get back to complete stock aq15 or at least on how to get bootloader to match system as aq15?
See how bl reflects aqh8? Is there a way to get it to match the rest at aq15? Or does everyone who used samfail root method look this way? How would I go back to Stock since I'm getting device mismatches in odin.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated
See mismatch

Use Prince Comsey Odin. You won't get the device mismatch errors.
sprint sm-N950USQU1AQI5 flashing to use on another carrier
I tried flashing with the zip file. But, I see invalid sim when I insert different carrier. Detailed desc would help me.
Or, is there any alternative to flash the sprint note 8(N950USQU1AQI5) to use different carrier.
Thanks in advance.

how to Revert Samsung S9PLUS Android 10 to 9 without losing warranty

Hello,
Begin of this year I received the android 10 update on my before good working fast Samsung S9+ phone, Nearly a year old ! Just after installing Android10 i got performance issues, and I still cant get used to the new interface. I feel it's getting worse time after time, the keyboard laggs, and the phone has became more buggy and slower.
I just want to go back to Android 9/
Because my phone is still under warranty, I would like to revert without losing warranty. I have read somewhere that if I flash with Odin, Samsung wont notice it. Unless Knox get damaged.
I came across this tuturial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdTT4cEUWc4
Looks simple. Picking the last android 9 release which corresponds my phone and flash it with Odin V3.14.1 like in the video.
Thing I cant find out is.... which country is my phone from? I am from the Netherlands and have bought it from the company BelSimpel. But I can remember it came with some German T-Mobile carrier apps. So maybe they imported it? How can I find this out?
Also , another strange thing is that when I registered the phone with Samsung , it tells me the following:
SM-G960F/DS
SM-G960FZAHLUX
This is NOT the case. It is not a s9 but an S9PLUS
Samsung Galaxy S9+ 64GB G965(F) Duos Black is pointed in the invoice. And also shown on the phone.

}
And last question...... when I have found out which country I need for stock android 9 (last version), where can I find this last firmwire? Sammobile does not show it for my phone.
I hope you guys can help me out! I bought the phone without a subscription to a carrier, for my carrier I just use sim-only which I frequently change when it gets cheaper elsewhere. I am very depended on the phone, dont have the money to buy a new one so I am very cautious.
The sammobile app says the following on my s9plus
Product Code: SM2G965FZKDDTM
PDA: G965FXXU9ETF6
CSC: G965FODX9ETF6
Baseband: G965FXXU9ETF2,G965FXXU9ETF2
Bootloader: G965FXXU9ETF6
And another app says this: (strange , because I live in the Netherlands)
Can't help you but you definitely helped me. I'm keeping my S9+ on Android 9.
To my knowledge you cannot revert to Pie/9 without loosing warranty. Your phone is on the 965FXXU9ETF6 firmware with CSC code (region code) DTM (which by the way is for Germany).
The bootloader binary of your firmware is XXU9ETF6 is 9. Samsung has rollback prevention implemented in their firmwares which does not allow downgrade to a lower bootloader binary. The latest Pie firmware for your region is G965FXXS7CSK6, binary 7, which unfortunately makes downgrade impossible without loosing warranty.
Have you tried a full factory reset? It might solve your problems. I see that you are on OneUI 2.1, which to my experience should be pretty good. Battery is awesome. I'm on G965FXXU9ETF5 for the NEE region (Nordic) and everything is fine.

Good evening Sten,
Thank you for your information.
The biggest issue for me is the warranty. The Android Doctor user from youtube says: it doesn't void warranty
I don't know on what information he based this conclusion, but I am asking him and waiting for a reply.
After a bit more research I've also found this ( but not concrete how they got this info about not losing warranty)
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS9/comments/e3kp9f/downgrade_s9_android_10_to_9/
there's no way for your warranty to expire unless Knox is tripped. Therefore your warranty should not be voided unless you make a mistake

Doubt you'll ruin the warranty unless you trip Knox. Use Odin and you'll need a firmware with the same boot loader. However I have had a S8 get bricked by Samsung and their beta program. Good luck

Short answer, reflash official Pie Rom with odin. You can flash official Rom with odin million times with no problem. Note: you can always flash the official Android 10 ROM for your country later when it got released. No warranty problem at all.

Also, when I check the firmwires. I See the latest PHN firmwire for Netherlands is (G965FOXM7CSJ5)

EDIT:
I have an answer from Android Doctor:
I didn't have a problem downgrading ,however it has been sometime since I downgraded back to Android 9.0 so there's been many Android 10 security updates and patches that probably now prevent the Downgrade, however u should be able to first Downgrade to the earliest Android 10 firmware resulting in it removing any Downgrade prevention patches then after that try the Downgrade back to the latest Android 9.0
What do you think about this?
There is no way you can remove the downgrade prevention as far as I know unless you downgrade to a version with the same bootloader binary. Someone in this forum with more experience might have other information (I'm no expert). You are already on Android 10, OneUI 2.1, with bootloader binary 9, and you cannot revert back the regular Odin way to the first release of Android 10, OneUI 2.0, which has bootloader binary 7. Odin will simply prevent that because of mismatch in bootloader binary version.
It is correct, though, that you can flash an official firmware how many times you like without triggering Knox - but again that requires the same bootloader binary to work.
You need to use TWRP to flash old .imgs because its already updated bootloader
Ok guys. Its still under one year warranty from Samsung. Ive traveled 300km to a repair center but they ended up just updating the system software and say there is nothing wrong with the phone. I swear it is so terrible slow that it really pisses me off!
I have nearly used it for a year. Maybe I should sell it, and go for another brand since Samsung has screwed me many times before. Does anyone know if the Pixel 5 is a good phone? Though I heard they will use samsung chips.
At the repair centre they also said it is impossible to revert back to android 9. Is this true? Such a pity, I liked the s9+ very much on android 9 and have bought lots of accesoires.
I'd try flashing stock with Odin to COMPLETELY wipe the phone, not just a simple factory reset from settings or recovery. Maybe it'll fix all your performance issues. Make sure to backup everything correctly.
