Years ago, I installed CyanogenMod onto an old Samsung phone with no trouble. A few weeks back, I was given a Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet 16 GB. The UI is pretty limited and I don't want a B&N account, so I thought I'd unleash the beast and install the full Android OS on it.
I read through various HOWTOs including "Install CM for acclaim" from the CyanogenMod Wiki.
I have formatted an 8 GB SD-card with a single FAT32 partition which has been flagged as bootable.
I downloaded and extracted CWM-based-Recovery v5.5.0.4 to the SD-card.
The device booted to recovery mode OK.
I first tried to install "cm-13.0-20160629-NIGHTLY-acclaim".
It failed with the well known OTA update / Status 7 error.
Reading up on this, the main advice is to try an earlier version, maybe even the last stable release.
I then tried "cm-10.2.1-acclaim" which is from all the way back in 2014.
It failed with just "E: Error in /sdcard/cm-10.2.1-acclaim Status 0.
A web search didn't return anything useful.
Next up, I tried the next release CM11: "cm-11-20140210-SNAPSHOT-M3-acclaim".
I got the same failure as with CM10.
Finally I tired the last snapshot before the latest nightly releases: "cm-13.0-20160418-SNAPSHOT-ZNH0EAO2NI-acclaim"
This time it is back to the Status 7 failure.
Considering all the successful HOWTOs I have read and the procedure is basically the same in each one and I have tried searching these forums.
I can only assume I am missing something really basic.
I checked on whether I need to root the device, as I had to with the old Samsung phone, but it seems the B&N Nook Tablet has root access by default.
So, can someone please help?

The CWM version you are trying to use is too old, I think, even for CM 10.2

I have been trying to find a newer version of ClockworkMod, but can only find image (img) files that don't seem to work: I used the gnome-disk-utility 3.10.0, UDisks 2.1.3 to write the image (recovery.img extracted from flashable_CWM_6.0.4.8_chrmhoffmann.zip), but it just makes an empty SD-card - that is, when I check the card with GParted, there are no usable partitions.
I have just found "cm-13.0-20160629-NIGHTLY-acclaim-recovery.img" but I cannot find any clear instructions what to do with it next.
Do I just write the image to the SD-card with the image writer? Because then I get a warning that the target disk is over7 GB bigger than the image and end up with an empty SD-card.

I can't speak to the CM 13 since I haven't gone there (yet). I followed the excellent instructions by @digixmax for CM 10.2 and (more recently) CM 12.1. In some cases there is no working CWM version and you have to use a version of TWRP. Late in the second thread there are a variety of file combinations people found that worked for them. But the instructions--if followed exactly--work, or at least they did for me.
TWRP worked perfectly for me. However I had to flash CM10.2 before I could go higher, otherwise trying to flash CM13 made TWRP reboot outright with no warnings while on stock. I'm sure since it was on Android 2.3 it needed to have the newer partition table to install to.

Okay, this thread is going to have A TON of info. I recommend that if you are new to Android you read this thread and any questions you have I will attempt to answer to the best of my knowledge or I'm sure someone else will.
It is, in my opinion, imperative that you understand the material of this post prior to playing around with your new Android device. Much of this topic is general purpose, i.e. it could apply to any Android device but I will be making specific references for the Nook Tablet.
Root: The Android OS is a linux based OS. Thus "root access" is a term that signifies full access to the file system of the OS. Consider root access similar to "administrative privileges" on Windows. An even more extreme analogy may be if you were to buy a Windows computer and find that you only had access to "My Documents;" the Android equivalent would be buying a device like the Nook Tablet (or pretty much any other android device) and not having root access.
Root for the Nook Tablet: We have various methods for rooting the Nook Tablet. The best method, IMO, is the sdcard method found here. This method will allow you to create an external microSD card that allows you to boot into a custom recovery (more on this later) and run a script which will get you "root access."
Why do I want root?: Root access allows you to do things you otherwise would not be able to do. Installing google apps is probably the biggest reason, but other reasons include making certain modifications to the device to allow you to do more "stuff." Another big reason is to install indirect's app which will allow you to flash (fancy word for install) a custom recovery to the internal memory of the Nook. He even has an app that will allow you to unroot the device and restore it to stock (I believe as of this post the unroot app only supports the 16GB model).
Custom Recovery? What's that?: A custom recovery is, IMO, the number 1 priority when tinkering with Android. The first instance of a custom recovery you may encounter is the one I mentioned previously, the sdcard version. I actually have a card that I keep imaged with the custom recovery (Clockworkmod Recovery) ready to go should I ever need it.
Within Clockworkmod Recovery or any other custom recovery, you will be able to do a few things: install zip files, make a backup of your current OS (and restore said backups), wipe data/cache. The key here, as with a lot of this stuff, is DO NOT START SELECTING THINGS YOU DO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND. For some reason a lot of users have a habit of wiping system and other things within CWM thus resulting in broken partitions and other issues. Follow directions. If you are unsure of something, ask a question.
Custom ROM: ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It is the operating system of Android that is on your device. The stock ROM that comes with the device, a modified version of Android by B&N is very restricting. Getting root access on this rom will open up many options for users. However, as Android is open source, we have the ability to create custom ROMs that provide even more freedom and a "pure" Android experience.
These ROMs almost always come "rooted" as well. What I mean by this is that a developer could create a ROM that does not allow the user root access. In fact, the newest policy of Cyanogenmod (a very popular and hard working ROM development team) is that ROMs will no longer come "rooted" by default. Users will have to toggle root access in settings.
Custom roms are flashed (installed) via a custom recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery. Basically, if you have CWM on your external sdcard or flashed internally, you can store the ROM zip file on your internal memory (or the external card should you choose), boot into recovery, flash the ROM and voila you will be ready to boot into a new OS (you should probably wipe data/cache as well if its a new ROM). I must stress here that it is IMPERATIVE that you make a backup of your current OS prior to installing a new ROM. This way, you can restore your previous setup should you not like the new one or if there are any issues with the new one.
Boot from sdcard? Yes we are quite lucky with the Nook such that we can boot from the external sdcard. I have already mentioned booting into CWM from sdcard but we even have the benefit of booting into a custom ROM (CM7 only currently) from external sdcard. What this means is that you leave the internal OS completely intact. This would thus allow "dual booting" i.e. you can boot into internal or boot from external.
Back to stock: Getting back to stock is incredibly easy with the Nook Tablet. I've done it myself a few times on two devices for various reasons. Many people are afraid to root or flash custom ROMs because it voids the warranty. While true, if you are able to return the device to stock conditions, B&N has no way of knowing that the device has been tinkered with and thus the Warranty remains intact.
To wrap this up, I must stress how important it is that you read, read, read and read more when doing this stuff. Follow directions to the T. Ask questions if you aren't sure about something. I know this is a long post as well but I can't stress how important it is that users understand the information I have put forth here when rooting and/or flashing custom ROMs.
Also, if someone wants to add benefits to why rooting the stock OS is useful please feel free to do so (I admittedly have little experience with the B&N stock OS and thus am not 100% positive of the benefits of rooting the B&N stock OS).

Installing/Flashing CWM on Rooted 1.4.0 NT w/ Blocked OTA Updates

I stepped away from the world of the Nook Tablet over the last 5-6 months in order to focus on other Android devices.
Last time I was involved with the NT, I rooted my son's NT with Indirect's 'Full Root (v1.4.0) w/ Blocked OTAs w/ ZergRush exploit' Thread.
From what it seems, there have been a few changes, including obtaining root access for NT's that have 1.4.1+ through the SDCard boot method.
Quick question:
I want to load a custom recovery on my son's NT, such as Xionia or CWM. The root via SDCard method includes this as part of the overall root method.
Is there a preferred way that I can install/flash custom recovery on my son's NT, knowing that I have a rooted 1.4.0 NT Blocked OTA updates?
Just curious.

I have a preference for the internal method. Plug in things are sometimes troublesome for me.
LOL! Well that's not exactly what I was asking however. As I stated, I currently have a rooted Nook Tablet (1.4.0) with Blocked OTA Updates (I used the original method from November 2011).
I am not interested in loading any kind of Custom ROMs at this time, but I do wish to add CWM or some other kind of custom recovery to my son's Nook Tablet.
Is there a recommended method to do this, without going through a re-rooting process with the 'Boot from SDCard method'?

Nook won't boot with CWM on card
Guys, am I the only one having this problem or are there others?
I've read and clearly understand the procedure to root my Nook Tablet. The problem is that no matter what I do, any time an SD card with a bootable CWM is inserted, the Nook simply refuses to start. Removing the card or for that matter replacing it with any other card that does NOT have a bootable CWM fixes the problem. It'll even boot and run the pseudo-root ROM that runs off the SDCard without actually rooting the tablet.
I've tested this with many cards and with several different ways to prepare it, and the end result is always the same regardless of what mode the Nook is in. I'm thinking that if somehow I'm not preparing the card correctly, then wouldn't the tablet simply boot up normally as it does with any other card that has no bootable CWM in it?
Since I bought my tablet at about the end of August 2012, I'm thinking B&N put something in the stock ROM to detect any other recovery and stop cold if that's what it finds. I say this because the problem is only with bootable recoveries, any bootable non-recovery works OK.
Any ideas??

Try powering off, inserting your bootable SD card in the tablet, then plugging the B&N USB cable into your tablet. Some tablets (and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it) will only boot from the external card if they detect the USB cable.

The OP mentioned that he only dual boot bootable Cyanogenmod image is CM7. Is there a reason why CM10 is not possible? It seems the N2A people are advertising that capability on their website. I would like to be able to do that myself if possible.
i am using this root guide from malloneem - Nook Tablet 1.4.3 complete root guide for 8or16gb to GB and JB. i have successfully rooted but my NT will not recognize that I have the .zip file - cm-7-TEAM-B-BETA1-signed.zip I've installed on a sandisk 8gb microsd. I can see the files when the sd card is in my computer but the NT says - FILE NOT FOUND when I try to load zip from sd. I've formatted and reload files several times but with no success. Am I missing a step?

I have to ask, since it may render your line of questioning somewhat moot: Is there a reason why you're trying to load such an old version of android? Why not use version 10.1 instead of 7?

Ultimately was going to install sgt7-10-20121209-meghd00t-acclaim The thread I was following recommended installing CM-7 first then CM-10. Just new enough at this I was trying to follow a simple but complete guide.
Understandable. I expect (read: hope) that an 'official' install guide will be released by the CM team as soon as it leaves release candidate status and is declared "stable". In the meantime, you might find some help here in these forums.
digixmax has particularly good instructions here. They're for version 10, not 10.1. I'm not sure if he has a 10.1 specific version but I couldn't find it in the 10 seconds I took searching for it. Just use newer versions of files as follows:
The newest version of cwm_6.0.*.*_acclaim_recovery_sdcard.img from here instead of the others in step 2b.
The newest version of CM from here instead of the one in step 2c.
The newest gapps-jb-2013* from here for step 2d.
If you run in to problems, be sure to clearly indicate exactly which steps you did (don't just say "I did all the steps").

So I have tried everything getting this thing (Nook 16GB Tablet) to work (boot off SD [class 4 8gb Sandisk] card into CM10.X+)
I have followed the directions to a T (several several times) and everytime I turn on my Nook it goes to the cyanoboot screen and goes to (SDC) LOADING BOOT and is stuck there, or if I hold the N before it get to it it will allow me to choose my boot option (I've tried the SDC recovery to use automatic partition zip provided on iamafanof's wordpress site; please note I have tried it with manually partitioning, and just leaving image as is and same results).
I have did a complete factory restore via the repart.img method, tried different SDC image versions, bought a new SD card just to make sure it wasn't the card.
The weird thing is I can create a CM7 SD card and it loads fine (so I don't think its the SD Card).
I am at witts end with this; I work in technology as a career (on a bit diff side) and this thing is driving me nuts not working.
I have tried booting tethered as well; the only thing that may be different is that I bought this used and it has an aftermarked (Griffin) charger.
What really sucks was I was originally thought I bought a NC b/c I heard it was easier to create a bootable SDC and found out I had a microphone
Can someone recommend a next approach? The only other thing I could think of was to try the alt boot files on "iamafanof" wordpress site but the links are dead.
I don't care if its 10.1 or 10; just really interested in Android 4.0 period.
Also this Nook was 1.4.3 when I first tried to boot from SD; since then I went through process above and now is 1.4.0 factory reset.

If you decide to install CM10 internally this image can be used as a bootable CWM card even if you don't want to run CM10 from it.
And FWIW, why does it suck that you got a Tablet instead of a NC? The Tablet is so much better, and certainly not any harder to mod.

Well guess it doesn't suck considering I payed 50 for a better tablet, I am just annoyed with it at this point. Yes I did, I formatted a SDC and burned that image to it after unzipping ( cm-10-20121231-NOOKTABLET-acclaim-HD-SDC-img.rar ) as well as other versions and they don't work even if I don't mess with partition tables. My only guess is that the boot files in the boot 1st partition of the image aren't compatible with my device which could be explained since I'm sure mine is a late model ( but why does CW7 work ? )
At this point I wonder if its possible to use the CW7 SDC and just copy gapps and the 10.1 Rom over. I'm extremely new at this so hopefully that isn't a stupid idea.

I'd suggest you try flashing flash_kernel_acclaim_30MAR2013_HD_SDC.zip at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/cm10-1-jellybean-android-4-2-2-for-nook-tablet-0218/ (under heading "Flash this if your NT doesn’t boot newer kernel" in SDC section).

That's for if your doing the internal root though right ? I don't want to do that. I listed above one of the exact zip files I tried, I've tried several of them ( the pre done SDC images). And none of them will boot past cynogenmod .

The version of the kernel fix that I referenced is for SD-based ROM (the file name contains the "SDC" string).

Ok I now see it (flash_kernel_acclaim_30MAR2013_HD_SDC.zip) but how do I flash it if I can't boot into SDC Recovery from the Cynogenmod screen? Does it modify internal ROM - can I put it on a blank SD Card or on the CM7 and go into recovery?

Yes I did. I have another larger flash drive coming in the mail, I do not think its the flash drive though. No one else has ever had this issue? CM7 works fine, I may try to boot into CM9 later this weekend.
Just to clarify I have done manual method and burned image, they boot to the cynogenmod boot menu and if I pick SDC anything it just hangs there.
I almost want to say I don't think it's cynogenmod bc I can choose internal boot from it and it boots into nook fine

This so odd! It seams like there is something wrong woth the boot section on your sd, but I don't see how that could be the problem if indeed you have tried ready-made images that we know work for "everyone else"!
Clutching at straws here, but have you tried Iamafanof's readymade CM10.1 image as well? http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...-1-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet-0110/ (I'm guessing you have, but like I said, clutching at straws...)

If you pick SDC Recovery from Cyanoboot menu it should say "loading SDC recovery" but it will take some time (up to between 1-2 min) before the CWM menu appears. Same thing with SDC Boot: it will take a bit of time before you see its boot animation. But neither should not take more than a couple of minutes to appear.
Also, for the manual method I'd suggest checking to make sure that boot.img and recovery.img on the SDcard /boot partition are not corrupted in the process of copying them to SDcard.

I am about 95% sure I have; I will try it again just to make sure; I tried several different versions of the image for 10.0 and 10.1 as well as the manual methods for both thinking it may be the build.
I will try to boot CM9.X and see if it works since 7 works. Really strange that no one else seems to have the issue.
In addition, I have left it well over 1-2 minutes at the cynogenmod screen and it never boots into CWM or the image (depending on boot option I pick).
So quick update.
I tried building a CM9 card and I got Cynogenmod to boot into SDC recovery (maybe I can use the same boot.img file?) However when trying to boot into SDC (after installing gapps.zip / ROM.zip) it reboots and boots into the normal INT nook.
Granite I may have messed something up with the process since I only did it once; but atleast I got past Cynogenmod screen.
Followed these directions and used these files:

ive had similar issues , one thing that hit me was that my downloads were incomplete . when you download the images of cm 10.X verify the file size vs the download page stated size and make sure that your downloads are complete. also i would try re downloading them all over again thats what i had to do , and follow the instructions to the dot but give us a link so we can see which ones your reading too , ive learned alot in the past three weeks of non stop hacking and modding on my tablet, its bricked itself three times so far and ive been forced to un brick it ,
the reason why i said that is , sometimes i get so worked up and over whelmed, take a five minuet break and go to the fridge and grab a drink and dont think about this for five minuets , clear your head and calm down then look back at the work you have already completed and examine it step by step fresh , you prob just missed one little detail ,

if upon reboot it goes to nook , hold power button until its off , then hit power to turn it on , once N shows up hit the N button on the tablet if you have CWM installed to internal , this is like a short cut key to force it to boot to sdc , OR with tablet completely powered off plug in charger cable , it should turn tablet on ,and with cable inserted it should boot to sd card first , if it takes a while then goes to nook OS your sd card is incorrect ,

forwarning , dont play with the touch screen firmware editor without reading , if you do pm me ill tell you how i crash coursed through that and how to fix it once you break that too lols 10 point is nice though

Hi all,
to make it plain and short: I messed up.
I have a GT-S5830i which I unrooted according to the Sticky Note in the forum, installed CWM Recovery and then 'installed from ZIP' a CM9_cooperve_Beta_05.zip that I found in one of the posts in the forum. The installation went on without error message but since then the phone does not make it beyond the initial screen "Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i". I can start recovery mode and Download mode. In reovery mode I can format cache, data, sdcard, sd-ext but *not* system. Error Message: "E: format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/st19"
I have tried already several methods according to the forum, e.g.
1) 'install from ZIP' older Cyanogenmod
2) the tool ext4_formatter.zip
3) re-flash with ODIN with several tar-ROMs, all failed. Odin finds the phone (since I start Odin as Admin now), but after I hit 'start' it tries to establish a connection to the phone and ends after a while with 'Failed'
I'm basically lost now, don't know what else to do. Any advise is appreciated (it's my mom's phone, she is getting impatient )

Hi @xalarsk , So you can't format your /system partition , which is required for installation of your rom ,, you need to try this method from here mate . Follow my instruction from the line @post#4 :"1. Download one of the newest ,,," to the end of the post and please do not use CM9 beta , because it is unstable and will wreak havoc with your system eventually . ( either cm7 or cm11 is the place you should go for CyanogenMod experience for cooperVe device ).
If you fail at any level please give us your logcat ( error massage ) for better support for your Odin process you mentioned .

In the meantime I tried to download the already split packages as described in another of your forum posts, but the website provides only exe-files instead of zip-files. Is there another location to download them?
#UPDATE: It seems there is a SplitFUS2 version for linux somewhere but couldn't find links to download. Anybody can help? I'll also PM Doky73

Cygwin was meant for windows platform to get the native Linux environment/command line you already got there . You can create a virtual instance of the windows 7 inside virtualbox or any kind of apps you are preferring such as Vmware/Parallel etc etc to get the job done .
Splitfus2 only supports windows platform as far as i know mate,,, either vitalization as i said or the pre-made zip package ( which is clearly not .exe file ,, push the download now and get yourself a descent downland manager,, tested and zip packaged delivered ) from here is the feasible approach for your problem .
Ok, had all the files ready, just the Boot loader <DefaultCalDataWithBoot_S5830iXXLB1_REV00.tar.rar seems to be broken. I downloaded the link provided in your post #8 several times with several download managers, also uses 7-zip and several online unrar services..result always the same: The archive is broken. Is that possible? Would you mind to check yourself?

Unbricked, SD card not recognized
Update: Phone has been unbricked, many thanks for that!
Currently I have still issues with the external SD card, which also holds the ZIP files. Phone won't recognize it, not even format it properly. Still working on that.

Mostly this happened because of the bug inside CM9 beta you used . Study this topic mate i troubleshooted while ago for a sample of the symptoms external SD card would show after unstable ICS usage .
Also as an alternative to the method i instructed there , you can format/Re-partition your SD card by putting it inside card reader and using app such as free MiniTool Partition Wizard "Gparted" tool for Linux users Or "iPartiton" for Mac users etc etc ,, to get the job done . You can find several tutorials inside XDA for this matter mate.

Now, this is a bit beyond the topic, but I'd like to ask anyway for recommendations of CM9 roms. The one I picked from a post inside this forum bricked my phone and made me start this thread, I don't want to go down this road again. So I'd be glad for any recommendation of a stable ROM that will put my phone beyond Android 4.0.

So i have a similar issue. I used to have CM11 installed, but i figured thats too slow for me. Then i went back to stock rom (XXMJ2) which works fine. But now i have a problem.
Everytime i want to flash a stock based or cm7 based rom on my phone, it gets messed up. Today i wanted to flash this

i naturally downloaded clockwork mod recovery (5.0.2.6) and tried to flash it. Flashing was done pretty quickly (10 seconds or so) and when i rebooted, i obviously got stuck at sammy logo. Now booting back to the recovery (first e3 then cwm) i got bunch of error about partritions not being able to be mounted (happens the same if i want to manually mout them or format them)...
So, what to do ?
I have a suspicion, that flashing CM11 and the latest cwm recovery for it somehow messed up partritions.

ok not going to excruciating details of symptoms and explaining all of your errors for now just please read my advice @ post2 of this topic and follow the procedures accordingly and finished it with formatter tools and cm7 instructions you will find there ., after that you can install Kitkat Smart R2 like you are coming from another CM7 build instruction . btw some problem regarding super user privileges and play store 492-498 infamous bug was reported for this fairly new development .
Hello! First post here!
Just got a new STF-L09 on the amazon cyber Monday sale (had an iphone before) and in my excitement to start messing with it, I managed to brick it.
I was following this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/beta-twrp-3-1-1-0-t3654355 and did a full format through TWRP to try and get rid of the encryption in order to root it. Now my device is in a bootloop. I've been looking through older posts here on XDA, boycracked and a few other places but there seems to be quite a bit of contradictory information and I don't want to make anything worse.
What I have:
- An unlocked bootloader
- Working TWRP 3.1.1
- ADB and fastboot (over USB from my laptop running linux)
- A microSD card
- Ability to boot to force update process
What doesn't work:
- my TWRP backup (I didn't realize the one I tried to make failed/got deleted).
- the stock eRecovery tool. Even on stable wifi it cannot retrieve package information from server. I'm assuming this is because Huawei hasn't made the recovery firmware available over this channel for this model.
I'm now trying to do a force update using a stock ROM and my external SD, but I'm having trouble for two reasons:
1. I'm not exactly sure what my initial firmware was, so I'm not sure which ROM to pick.
2. I can't successfully transfer the contents of the update.zip I'm trying to use into a dload folder on the root of my sd. I'm assuming this is because the sd card is formatted to vfat and the UPDATE.APP file is larger than 4GB and therefore not supported on vfat.
Can anybody tell me:
A. How to find out what my initial firmware designation would have been? Phone was recently purchased for UK market, blue colour, 64GB internal memory. Came with EMUI 5.1. I have S/Ns and so on if that helps.
B. How to perform force update with microSD in my situation? Can I format the card to NTFS or another format that supports >4GB filesizes? Am I using the wrong ROM (This is the one I'm trying to use: http://androidhost.ru/v5 )? What files exactly should go into /dload/ at the root of the sd?
C. Is there another procedure I should try in my case? I am able to use fastboot, and I understand it would be possible to flash files onto the device using that, but I'm just getting started with Android and I'm not really sure about the functions of the various images/partitions (eg. data, cust, boot etc.). Is there any hope of the eRecovery tool coming online?
I know some of you have had some success coming from similar situations. I'd really appreciate any help you guys could give. Happy to throw some dosh to anyone who can help put me back in business!
