Xperia z5 boot animation - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every single downloadable bootanimation seem to operate from a file called. 'bootanimation.zip'... However... On my xperia z5, boot animation operates from a file called 'bootanim.mp4'. If I rename or delete this mo4 file, there is no animation taking place. No matter what bootanimation.zip I install, it does not get called by the OS. The OS is looking king for the mp4 file. Can anyone help me to change this behavior, so that the bootanimation.zip gets executed instead.
My phone is rooted with xposed running and init.d is functioning as well.
Please guys, I can't find any reference to this anywhere on the net. Not it even on XDA.
Thanx in advance.

I know this is an old post, but I ran into the same issue/question and found this thread when searching for the answer. I was not able to find the answer anywhere on-line, but I did eventually manage to figure it out myself:
Your phone will have up to 2 additional files in the /system/media directory: default.playlist or custom.playlist (or both). For any newer Xperia model running the stock firmware that uses MP4 boot animations, you can get it to play the more traditional bootanimation.zip format instead by either renaming or deleting those files.

[Q] 2.1 Bootanimation

Has anyone figured out how to change the boot animation?
It seems it's stored in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
I tried replacing the .PNG images inside the archive and that didn't work, although I might have messed up something. I'm just glad to be rid of that dreadful SE color splash until someone else finds a solution.
finished playing with this a little while ago... when you replace the files you must use no compression, ie store. i've attached one with the android robot waving (cropped from nexus) simple, but at least the splash is gone

Thanks for this! Looks so sweet!!
strange... I replaced one frame to see if it changed and saw nothing ( i put a big red X across one image ). I did use no compression ( kept the zip open in winrar and saved )
will try again!

i finally found it for sure...from the zip above extract them all put your images in an then add in a zip file all of them again but you have to rename it as bootanimation.zip and you have to choose at winrar compression method store...its final and you can put anything you want...
Thank you for helping me sort this out.
Here's GLa’DOS "Android Scribble" animation for the x10 mini.
Apparently anim2 lasts a couple of seconds, and anim3 last the longest.
I lost my first x10 mini, so I added a name and telephone number for my animation after posting (and a lock screen for the phone).
if anyone want me to make any anime feel free...
here is my first one and of course greek...

Hi Guys.
I've been trying to change the bootanimation, but as
I'm a little slow to understand, I have no doubt
to decompress it and stuff.
Who can explain me the luxuries of details please?
It would be a great help ...

1 root your phone
2 download rootexplorer(<---and install it) & any bootanimation.zip you want
3 open rootexplorer and go to your sdcard hold down your finger and choose copy
4 then go to system/media
5 at the upper of your root explorer its a button that says mount r/w make it says by pushing it mount r/o
6 push the button paste and then when it says ovewrite push yes
7 reboot and you r ready!!!!
if i make it a single file you will not have the option when the first animation is over the second to be anime it will be a still picture if you want that just leave one image in the second folder..because it have 2 phases of animation..!!!!(if you remember first when the colours where mixing and then the still image with sony ericsson logo and letters)
I've been trying to edit the desc.txt file so I can have a little more flexibility but even if I save it without making any changes it stops working.
After a look around the interwebs someone mentioned saving in the UNIX format, so I used Notepad ++ in UNIX and tried editing/saving in that but there's still problems, sometimes it doesn't work at all and sometimes it only shows the first folder.
Also, are there any limitations as to framerate and how many files can go in the part0/part1 folders (revision of enormous101's bootanimation.zip).
Finally, is it ok to add a part2?
do not use compression - use Winrar and select "store"

as i mentioned part 2 is when the bootanimation of sony ericsson stays frozen you can add anything you want and its safe to play with part two.. no limitation except your internal storage!!!!what exactly are you trying to do with desc?may i help you?if you find my preview posts at the first page you will find to download the bootanimation.zip with two parts so unzip it and when you add your images zip it with winrar at store compression mode...

Already doing that.
Maybe a stupid idea, but... has anyone tried to use transparent images?
I want to watch the kernel booting
edit: Forget this.
Nice thread!
I was wondering about the desc.txt file. I am using the Rogers 2.1 firmware and I want to remove the Rogers screen that shows up just before desktop loads. The PNG file for the Rogers screen is located in Anim5 and I was wondering if I just removed the entry for anim5 in the desc file, would that do the trick? I've already moved the original bootanimation.zip file onto my computer so it is backed up but I was just wondering if this would work. I am using a X10 but it seems like the file system is the same which is why I'm asking here. Any help would be appreciated!
hope helped

if you dont know how to change desc.txt then dont...unzip the bootanimation.zip change the images inside anim5 folder and then zip it but at compression mode use ''store'' instead of everything else and just put it in your phone...i cant change your desc.txt and make it into two folders because i dont own x10...

Thanks for your response! From what I've been reading, it seems that if I remove the entry for anim5 in the desc.txt, that it won't load that animation. It just seems easier to do this than to replace the image in that folder. Though the problem would then be making changes to a UNIX based txt file using a Windows OS and then the phone not recognizing the desc.txt file based on it being in the wrong format.
Anyway, I suppose I could just copy over the last image in anim4 and replace the one in anim5 with that and that would be the easier solution (as per your suggestion).
Here is the thread I was reading where it describes the desc.txt file and how to modify your boot animation.

[Q] custom boot animation not working (optimus)

okay so of course many threads/posts about custom boot animations...and i have looked around to solve this issue but not one answer.
(this is for lg optimus)
i can install custom boot animations (from xda and google) and i push them to any of the following /data/local , /system/media , /customize/resource...etc..and they work just fine..
however when i do my own boot animation i must be missing something....have checked and rechecked my files, using 7zip (store), etc..and just a blank screen..i have even broken down other bootanimation files (that work) and still wont work lol..i have attached file..maybe someone can explain or see what i am missing. im guessing its the littlest thing im missing.
thanks.
btw..i have even tried installing with using root explorer etc..so ive narrowed it down to something with one of my files or how its being zipped.

Borrowing bootanimation.zips from the Galaxy Nexus..

So I wanted an appropriately shiny boot animation for my newly Fresh-rommed Evo, and I found this page:
http://droidmodderx.com/galaxynexus/how-to-install-100s-of-bootanimations-for-your-galaxy-nexus (Full of previews, will bog your computer down!)
That phone has the same screen resolution, 720 x 1280, so most of these seem to work for me. I didn't bother with flashing them from recovery, as the bootanimation.zip file can be easily extracted and placed in /system/media using Root Explorer. Your mileage may vary. I am using Spyro at the moment, nice ICS-ish colors.
SOME of them did not work, or rather they worked, with intermittent flashes of a white screen..I am not sure but suspect it's something to do with frame rate? Anyone?
Updates.................
Directories: Your individual rom maker may have put the animation package in one of several locations. These include:
/system/media
/system/customize/resource
/data/local
I have seen still other locations used on my old EVO 4G (and new roms are coming out all the time), so if you just cannot find anything, try doing a search for 'animation.zip' from the root level, with your file browser.
Filenames: Your rom maker may have used one of several slightly different name variants for the bootanimation.zip package; it really depends on what they started out with as a base. Sense-based roms, for example, will tend to change things up. You might have an 'HTC_bootup_one.zip' instead of a 'bootanimation.zip'. You can't go wrong by naming your new package the exact same thing, and putting it in the same folder. (BUT you also have the option of deleting all oddly named animation packages you find in odd locations on your phone, and just using the standard 'bootanimation.zip' and putting it in /system/media. This is the Android standard location, and it will almost certainly look there if it can't find it elsewhere. Note that if you do this and fail to find and delete the other package, it will still use the other instead.)
Permissions: You shouldn't need to change permissions on the package file, at least that's never been an issue for me. If you are having problems there, I'd suggest trying the standard 644 setting one usually finds in the system folder, or RW-R--R--. (As long as the file is Readable by the owner, I would think that it would work.)
I can't delete or change these files! You may be using ES File Explorer, which is not the easiest app to drive. It requires root permission being set in its settings, and if you don't do that, hilarity can ensue. (I again recommend Root Explorer by Speed Software, which is not free but gives the most straightforward file browsing experience you can imagine, a big plus if you're new to rummaging around in your phone's innards!)
You absolutely cannot play with this stuff without root, so don't even try, okay? And when you want to change anything in a root-level folder, you will need to remember to set that folder RW (read/write), and then remember to set it back to RO (read only) when you are done, yes? You smart folks already know these things, I just want to make this post as complete as possible.
But I need MORE animations! I found the link above by googling 'bootanimation.zip 720x1280' so have at it!
If you've any more questions, please ask..
Worked great for me, thanks!

What about activating sound?

Well, if you want sound and the animation doesn't include it, it is possible to add any fairly short sound in .ogg format to the same /system/media folder, and call it with an edit to the bootanimation.zip file. (You'll need to call it from the desc.txt file inside the zip.)
Say you have a sound picked out and converted, and it's called evoboot.ogg. Your desc.txt will need to include the line:
s evoboot.ogg
There are some tutorials on building these animations from scratch, if you look around on here, like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420991

I use the same rom. The file is in system/customize/resource. You have to rename the bootanimation to hTC_bootup_one.zip. Also don't forget to make the permissions match.
I am very much looking forward to trying some of these out tomorrow when I get off of work!! I've read through the two guides on making your own and implementing your own sound files. These sound very exciting as well, but I feel they are over my head still. I am going to pace myself a bit and wait to try them.. but soon I will try.. But for now there are just so many to choose from.

Could you expand on how to make permissions match. I found two files in that directory that has me confused. One is hTC_bootup.zip and one is SPC_bootanimation.zip. Which do I change? Also it seems that I can't delete the spc one to put the zip I downloaded in its place. Am I making this harder than it really is?

Got what? Can anyone elaborate?
I'm wanting to know this too, because I tried some other boot animations from an HTC ONE series phone, and it didn't work.
These were mentioned here on the boards earlier, and I tried to use a flashable "beats" BA, but it did not work. Also tried the "suckerpunch" BA manually by going into system/customize/resource, and THAT did not work either.
A guide would be greatly appreciated, and a sticky should be made for boot animations, as well as splash screens.

Where did those animations come from that you mentioned? Cause i doubt the names are correct for this phone
Sent From My Sweet Ass EVO LTE
Okay. First go download the boot animation that you like from:
http://tinyurl.com/co9ulfv Not sure if you can post the full links here but at least this one is clickable?
(One of the bootanimations I clicked on was bogus so use your brain. The next three brought me right to the file download without visiting a website first.) Then go into ES file explorer and go into settings and make it writable by placing a check next to Root Explorer and Mount File System. Next I found the downloaded file and clicked into it and clicked Data then local and found the actual boot animation zip and copied it to the root of the SD card so it would be easy to find. After that I renamed that file to SPC_bootanimation.zip. Now you go into system/customize/resource and delete the file labeled as SPC_bootanimation.(I saved a copy first and this must be done before you copy the file you're pasting in there. Don't know why but once I copied I couldn't delete the stock _bootanimation.zip file). Then I went back to the sd card and copied the renamed SPC_bootanimation file and pasted it in the resource directory where i deleted the original. Bingo, reboot and you will see your new animation. I did all of these steps in ES File Explorer.
Your folder may be in system/media depending on which rom you're using. I am on stock/ ultra smooth lscape Rosie by flex360.
P.S. the way I was messing up first was I was trying to rename the file I downloaded to spc_bootanimation not the bootanimation.zip file located inside of that original download in the Data/Local directory.
Also, I'm not an English major by any means, so if something is spelled incorrectly or the proper grammar wasn't used, sorry. I'm not looking for a lesson just looking to help out. heck if it's bad enough, just click on the donation tab next to my name and maybe I can afford some classes.
I'm using the bluplazmall boot animation. Looks really good.

what you looking for?
Ok maybe I'm just retarded, or just a little rusty on my adb. Tried this in RootExplorer, didn't work. Tried it using adb, didn't work either. It's saying /system is mounted as Read-Only. I tried an app called SUFBS and made sure that it was mounted as Read-Write, and it failed. In adb, I'm navigating to the correct folder, "adb devices" to make sure it's showing up, "adb remount" which is succeeding, then "adb push SPC_bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/" and it's giving the Read-only error. I'm running ViperRom 1.2.1 and am S-Off. Anybody got any pointers? Oh and btw, I did extract the bootanimation.zip from the .zip file I downloaded from the website in the op.
I am curious what root explorer is saying when in that directory..does the button at the top allow you to set it RW?
It's not showing an icon for rw or anything. May be a different, crappier version? It's the one that came with ViperROM. That SUFBS app is very similar, and I chose rw in it, found the bootanimation.zip file on my sd card, moved it to /system/customize/resource, and it showed it moving the file, but it never showed up.
Edit: It's RootBrowser. Nonetheless, SUFBS is essentially the same thing. I'm curious though why I can mount as read-write in that app, yet adb says its read-only.

Custom boot animation sound

This is totally unrelated to anything posted here as of yet but I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to add a custom sound to the boot animation of this rom(paranoid android 4.43). I have themed to android L but im using the stock boot animation and I had a nice sound file I wanted to play while the phone is starting up. I've tried renaming my custom file to PowerOn.mp3 and .ogg and placing it in system/media folder also in the etc folder with no luck. This is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not at pc, but I think it has to go in bootanimation, and you will have to edit the file that loads the boot animation if I remember right

[Q] What app is this and where to find the app data folder?

Hi, I bought a chinese head unit for my car an it seems to work very well with android 4.1, 6.95" display, A9 dual core cpu, unbranded.
There is an app called "bootanimation" (see pic 1), when starting you can select one of 3 different animations (pic2) but I don't now where to find the data files for this app (and did not find ANY information about this app!)
I would like to use another boot animation file. It seems that the device is NOT rooted (tried to active root access in file explorer, but this did not work). App information (pic3) doesn't help - do you have any idea where to find information about this app?
Tried framaroot without success - no working exploit found Perhaps the above app use it's own folder for boot animation files but I could not find it.
[EDIT]: On my search I realised that BusyBox is installed on the unit! So with ESFileExplorer I should be able to change data in system/root folders? So I must only get the correct data path for the 3 pre installed boot animations (did not found it yet)
Any idea about this app and the data folder its using?
Thx
Deffe1
OK, at least I found it: only after rooting the device you can see the files in system/ect/bootanimation - there are the 3 files listed by the bootanimation app (used baidu root). After copying a new bootanimation file I could select and activate it with this app - nice
