I'm moving the data off my stock 2GB card to a SANdisk 8GB Class 4 card to gain more media performance.
I understand FAT32 is better than FAT16 in this respect...
In fact the Hero formatted the card as FAT32 so assume it prefers it
Now, copying to the card, my Mac is copying very very slowly, far slower than the stock FAT16 card did.
Is this normal ?
Well done a bit of testing and the Album app is waaay slower on my class 4 8GB card formatted as FAT32.
Images in grid view and filmstrip view pop up more or less instantly on the stock 2GB FAT16 card.
On the FAT32, they appear as grey boxes before being filled in one by one with the actual image.

I've cleared Album's cache and data to force a rebuild of thumbnails, that thats not the issue.

ive noticed this aswell as i got me gf a hero at the same time as i got mine but only got a 8gb sandisk micro sd cardfor myself.
Her album photos with about 20 photos in is sweet as but when i scroll thorugh mine also with about 20 photo's in i have to wait for the grey boxes... when i got my 8gb card tho i didnt format nothing just plugged it straight in and started using it. everything else seems a little faster though compared to hers
My 8GB card was used in a Nokia N85 before so I had the Hero format it for me.
Assuming this would prepare it for use correctly...
Gone back to the stock 2GB card and all is zooming along nicely again.
Are you sure this isn't a caching issue guys? It may be slow to load on the first time while all the thumbnails are generated, but should be snappy afterwards. I would however be worried abou transfer speed between the SDHC Card and Mac as that should definitely be faster than a class 2.
When I changed from a class 2 to a class 6 I would say my read/write speeds doubled (or just over), I seem to get about 6-7MB/s when writing to it.
Have you tried writing to it when not in the phone? That will probably give a slightly better (or more realistic) reading.
Its not caching, I already tried clearing the applications (Album) cache and allowed it re-create its thumbnails in grid view and filmstrip view.
Opened each album and waited while it created them all.
Restarted the Hero and then went back to Album.
Still very slow compared to the 2GB card. No idea what class this is as it doesn't appear to say (writing on the backside is almost too small to read).
Writing to the card via my Mac starts fairly quickly, slows down to a real crawl and then a few minutes later speeds up again.
Worked fine in the N85 and recorded and played back video at a much higher bandwidth than the Hero can do.
FAT 16's limit is 2GB. so if you want to use a larger card then 32 is the way to go.

The problem I am seeing though is that the FAT32 formatted card appears to be far slower than the FAT16 card.
i forgot to add in my previous post that backing up the data to my pc was very fast on both cards, the only slow down i get is with the album app, exactly the same as joemax.
apart form that everything else is faster than my gf's 2gb card.
im gonna try backing up my data and formatting the card as i never tried that the first time
will report back with any findings.

tried formatting but made no difference, is fine with just 8 photos on, but once you start going to 20+ you get the grey box syndrome, which only last for 2 seconds or so before they appear but ofcourse would be nice if it was ultra smooth. could be that our sandisk 8gb class 6 cards are fakes .. i got mine of amazon for £15. i wouldnt of thought so but you never know, as everything else on the phone is running sweet.
I formatted the 8GB card in the Hero and in the card reader plugged into my Mac...
No change is speed at all.
Album is definitely far slower on the 8GB class 4 SanDisk card.
I just bought a generic class 4, 8gb memory card and the lag was terrible took an age for anything to load, so i went and got a class 6, 8gb card and the speed is back up to what it was when it came with the 2gb card. I strongly suggest anyone not to buy anything but a class 6 card.

Anyone know what class card the Hero ships with ? Mine does not say, if it does the writing is far too small for my eyes to read.

I think you're getting the same problems as quite a few others. It seems to be some kind of problem the Hero is having with certain cards.
The problem being that it does not create and store the thumbnails for the Album gallery. The folder is created but the files are not. We are currently trying to work out why this would be, but i'm sure it's some kind of SDHC incompatibility with current Hero ROMs.
I was wondering since I got the bestbuy protection plan if I could go to the ATT store and get the 32gb card since they say its compatible. Will they even put the card in?

I would say you can try. But the microSD card isn't supposed to be upgradeable; at least not by us, the users.
Your protection plan won't cover that. Once AT&T starts tinkering with it (or anyone else for that matter), it technically voids your Best Buy warranty.

I can confirm the 32GB Micro SD from AT&T works in the Surround! Just a word of caution and should be common sense anyway. Backup everything, photos, music, etc before you change the card out. Make a list of your apps too. I know better but in my haste I forgot. I'm only missing a few pics so no biggie. Once I realized I forgot I figured I'd just swap the cards back later and backup pics again then swap the SD out again. DIDN'T WORK.
On reboot with the new 32GB card the phone will not see the new size of memory until you hard reset to format the memory. Once you enter your MS Live info again it will quickly recover your contacts then sync with Zune and restore all your media. Some apps will restore themselves (several I had deleted somehow auto-restored) but for the most part you need to search for them all over again and re-install. I miss the "auto-install" folder for WM6.5.
What didn't work was trying to go back to the original 16GB card. It seems the phone cannot reboot with a smaller card. That's the only conclusion I have. I hadn't tried to reformat the old card yet or anything. Putting the old card back just causes the phon eto keep cycling on and off to the HTC screen. Nothing else. Put back the 32GB card and everything is fine.
you could use any 32 gb card .. BUT 1 exeption card must be brand . sundinsk label does not mean anything .. you must confirm that card does not chineese fake .

A class 2??? I was thinking atleast a class 4 and preferably 10 if they make msd cards that fast. So how long does it take for you to sync with your class 2?

According to MS the class of the card is not the only factor.
"Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices."

Question for you guys/gals, i ordered the Z2 and expecting delivery today. I am now looking at microSD cards. I notice some inconsistency in the MicroSD card capacity from different sites. Anyone know if the 128 works with the Z2?

I got my wife a Z1 Compact and am (im)patiently waiting for my Z2 to arrive. I ordered a mess of the SanDisk 128GB cards when Amazon first got them in about 2 months ago. I've yet to put one in something and have it not work properly. Works perfect in the Z1 Compact, so I would think that there would be no issues with the Z2.
I should warn you however that the performance is pretty painful. Coming from SanDisk's 64GB extreme plus, the speed of something that just makes the cut to be a class 10 is a little disappointing. For me capacity comes before performance almost every time - my Go Pro probably being the lone exception.

I have a 128gb in my Z2, only got the phone yesterday, no problems so far
My 64GB card is showing up as a 64GB card but I'm yet to find a way to actually get anything onto it. The only way I got stuff on is when the phone's internal capacity was getting full (already! after one day!) and it offered to move stuff (movies, music, photos) to the SD card. It managed to yet none of my file manager software on the phone, or when connected directly to PC, or via WiFi File Explorer, or even when the card is directly in the PC with an adaptor, lets me put an actual file on it. I can create a new folder if I'm lucky, that's it.
It's a beautiful phone but the SD card is doing my head in. I've a Sony 64GB SDXC so it should work a treat... have I missed something? Like an option somewhere to actually allow writing data from the card by the user rather than just when the phone says it's okay?

That doesn't seem right.
So according to you I can't put music on my SD Card; I can record movies and photos on the phone onto the SD card but cannot transfer them to a PC, and I can't basically do ANYTHING with files on the SD card on my phone?
That doesn't sound right. What's the point of having an SD Card slot at all then? I thought the Kit Kat restrictions applies to apps, not general files. If you're right I'll have to change to another phone as that is a step backwards. It was SO easy on my Xperia S.

The restrictions that kitkat impose are that applications cannot write to anywhere on the sdcard and must use their own folder on an sdcard. Applications that have rootaccess are able to bypass this limitation including some pre-installed apps such as the camera, walkman and file commander application.
I have all my music and videos stored on my sd card and have no trouble accessing them and I copy them across in media-transfer mode via usb cable on my pc.
When you attach the sd card to your pc, are you doing it through your phone or via a card reader etc?
Situation has changed a little now - I can now view the card correctly on my PC.
It's because I'm stubbornly still on XP (I am NOT moving to Vista, 7 or 8 any time in the future!) so I needed an update to enable SDXC cards, otherwise it just gets stuck saying "card isn't formatted, do you want to format it? (yes) Oh, formatting failed" etc.
In case anyone else has problems like this the update is KB955704, available from link below.

This means I can now just pull the card from my Z2 and stick my music etc. on from there, and pull the photos etc off from there.
It seems even when connecting to PC via the phone's USB lead there are problems until this update is in - I could see the files but not edit them, move, copy, etc etc which is what was REALLY confusing me.
Sorry if I seemed a bit noobie about that. I've actually been flashing my phones, tinkering etc for years and years but I guess I've not had an SDXC card before so didn't realise it wouldn't play ball.
MUCH better now - I don't really care what the KitKat limitations are now I can just transfer files "properly".

So I wasted a day transferring files via Dropbox when a poxy Windows update would have solved it. You live and learn. I hope I can save someone else the hassle!
The pre-installed File Commander can write to the internal storage. So getting files onto the external add card is two stages. I copy over WiFi from my NAS to internal storage using ES file explorer, then copy from internal to external using file commander.

Thanks for that, I found that File Commander trick earlier. Problem I had to get around was I went nuts and installed every single app I ever bought but couldn't use properly on my old phones - namely the GTA games which were broken for my Xperia S. I ran out of internal storage within hours of getting my Z2... I got over-excited. I've calmed down now and deleted a load so there's more space and my SD card works fine now when in a card reader.
I've never been able to manage files directly from Explorer on my PC though when the phone is directly connected, either on the S and now the Z2. I think it worked to a point on my Xperia X10 but I mostly used Wifi File Explorer... which isn't working on my Z2 unfortunately, probably due to the Kit Kat restrictions mentioned.
I can kind of see why they did that - my phones used to get full of mystery folders full of crap over time - but it's a shame it breaks a lot of the old ways I used to get things done.
Anyway I apologise if we've gone off topic but thanks everyone for your very helpful hints and advice. I'm actually looking forward to getting my O2 Xperia Z tablet with the bundled offer (£99 for an Xperia Z tablet, yes please O2!) because it will most likely be permanently stuck on good, old-fashioned Jelly Bean. I've not seen much in Kit Kat that has thrilled me. I don't think I'd update to Kit Kat if I had a choice given how firmly a grip of your nuts they have now.

Hi I don't have a 128gb in mines but rather a Sandisk ULTRA 64Gb class 10 SDXC card.
I shot a 2 minute 4k video this afternoon which was saved directly onto the SDcard and on playback there seemed to be no problems whatsoever playing it back.

What sort of write speeds do you get?
I'm thinking of buying this to replace my 64gb card.
I just got my new Samsung Galaxy S5, original ROM with version 4.4.2. It uses a new Toshiba 64GB speed U3 micro SD card.
When I transfer my WhatsApp folder from PC to GS5, it took me more than 24 hours!!!
The WhatsApp folder has about 3GB in size, and thousands of received/sent images.
At the first time, I transfer them from PC to the (fast) SD card in the phone. It really took me more than 24 hours. At the second time, I tried transfer them from PC to the phone internal memory. It seems to be a little bit faster. I did not wait it to complete. But I assume it will take 20+ hours also.
When I use the file manager in GS5 to copy the entire 3GB folder from SD card to phone internal, it takes only 5 minutes or less. (It's a U3 card afterall)
I did a small test. I transfer only the database files from PC to the SD card (in the phone). There are 7 files, in total 1 GB in size. It takes only 1 minute.
So my guess is, the transfer speed will be ultra slow when it contains many small files.
The same issue happens in different fast computers.
I have also tried transfer back from phone to PC, speeds are roughly the same.
I used the original USB cable, and tried on other short and average quality cables.
I prefer not to pull my SD card out every time. Even if i do, transfer from PC to phone also have the ultra slow speed issue.
I know there are threads suggesting to transfer file by other methods. But my concern is: Why is it so unreasonable slow? And I prefer using the USB method.
Is my phone a defect?

I havent used and SD card in this phone the entire time I've owned it, but today I popped a 32Gb class 10 card in, and erased it of everything.
Now the phone recognizes the card and is reporting how much free space is available, but I cant seem to put anything on it, no pictures/videos, no game files, nothing. The camera app doesn't give me the option of saving to the card either.
The only Android/SD card experience I have is with a Note II that I used to own, and my Shield Portable. Both of those devices give me options to use the card in one manner or the other.
Am I missing something?
