Stuck at boot logo.... HELPPPP!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so looks like my phone decided to take some time off...
What happened was that yesterday I was playing a game on it and the battery had just about 3% left, so I put it to charge (wall charger) and the game froze.. Din't pay too much attention to it when I came back a couple of hours later, the phone was off. Turned it on and didn't go past the Samsung logo.... And it's been like this since then.
I was running a 4.4.4 ROM Eclipse V5 By AC, which was working fine and I have access to TRWP Recovery and also to Download Mode.
I have tried to restore a different nandroid backups and install other ROMS, inclusively an original stock ROM.. I tried to restore EFS, but only managed to restore and old one that was stored in the phone's memory.
I also have an emergency firmware and a stock one and I believe I have everything else to be able to do it by Odin, but I don't have USB debug!!!
Please tell me there is a "magical way" to enable USB debugging without having access to the phone!! Even on Download Mode, Odin doesn't recognize the phone. I also have Samsung and ADB drivers installed.
I'm getting desperate and don't know what else can I do to sort this out..
My phone is GT-I9300 International, running a 4.4.4 ROM (when it bricked) and have PhilZ Touch 6.48.4
Any ideas or suggestions, please???? Thanks guys!

Deinstall all Samsungdrivers, KIES and Odin on PC. Install actual software from sammobile.com. Try another USB-port, if possible at mainboard. Run Odin as Admin. If phone isn't shown in Odin, it's gone.

Hey rp158, thanks for your reply! I'll try and do that! Hope I don't have to bury it ......

*EDIT*
Thanks again for your advice rp158! I decided to borrow a laptop running Windows 7 (I have Windows 10 on my PC), installed fresh version of Kies and finally I got it to work with Odin!! Flashed a couple of emergency firmware and finally an original 4.3 ROM. The problem continued and finally I flashed an efs fix. I guess that did the trick and my phone came back from the dead! Rooted my phone again, installed PhilZ and restored a previous backup I had.
Now I still have one problem to solve! I still didn't managed to have network service... I already managed to fix my IMEI, or at least when I press*#06#, shows the right IMEI, but no network service....
I read about a few "fixes" for this but I haven't fully tried any of them.. Any suggestions?...
Thanks again for your help!

Maybe, you imported wrong settings by restoring backup. So go back to firmware again without any patches and check, whether IMEI and net access are ok. If not, try KIES-emergency-repair. If you succeed, don't use your backup (and continue with TWRP ).

Hi rp158, I've reinstalled the original firmare and ROM by Kies and everything went well but I was still getting a "0049" IMEI... I was burning my eyes so much because of it that I decided to take the phone to a store. They have been trying to re-register the IMEI for the last couple of days and just got a message saying that they have managed to do it. I'l pick it up tomorrow. If they really managed, it will cost me about 25 Euros, but will sabe a lot eye burning! :silly:
First I'll do is a Nandroid job and about 100 EFS backups! lol
It shouldn't be problem to restore a previous backup that I know it's working well, right?...

Maybe. Or a goed moment to try something fresh...

Hello rp158, they actually did it!! Phone works great and it's totally functional. Tried to find out what kind of software they used but they wouldn't tell me as expected..
Made a nandroid and efs backup straight away and restored my previous ROM, just to do a Titanium backup of everything and now I', using a 5.1 ROM.
Thanks again for your help!

@migasbr: fine.

S2 IMEI Unkown + No Service PLEASE HELP

Hi all,
I own a galaxy s2. I'm facing a issue which i've been trying to fix for the past couple of weeks. I tried many threads in this forum, but nothing seems to solve the issue.
This is the issue,
I used to flash custom roms on my device. I used many custom roms including cm9 RC1 and when samsung released the lastest 4.0.4 update i just wanted to chek it out. so I downloaded the generic russian (SER) firmware and flashed it using odin.
After flashing it I was stuck @ boot. i was stuck there for more than 10 mins, so I ended up removing the battery. then I went to samsung recovery(Volume Up+Power+Home) and cleared the cache and user data and rebooted the phone it worked fine. At this time I didn't bother to check whether my IMEI was there but everything worked fine.
After couple of days(without rebooting the device in that time) I droped the phone. battery came off, when I turned on the device again, prohibited mark like thing came in the status bar and there was no service, when I checked the IMEI it was not there.
At this moment I was not sure whether the drop caused the issue or the flashing caused it. I later realized IMEI issue comes because of EFS but sadly I didnt back it up. After diggin for few days I found when flashing one of the custom roms, efs was backed up automatically, I tried restoring it, but it didnt help (Maybe the backup was corrupted )
I followed various threads in this forum but nothing helped me.
Please help me get the IMEI back, I really miss my device :crying:

I tried this also, but it didnt solve my issue :crying:
...
I once had a similar problem.
My imei went lost because of a rom upgrade and I DIDN'T have a backup..
I solved the problem by flashing a stock rom (any samsung stock rom will do) with ODIN.
I am not sure what happened, but it looked like that the nv_data folder was "re-generated" and I got my IMEI back.
Now I have a copy of the folder in every storage media around my house

If you have a backup, then you should be able to recover it. There are tons of threads on here with instructions on how to restore an EFS backup. Search (if you want it fixed, that is. If you don't want it fixed, keep posting to this thread in the hope someone spoonfeeds you. Might be waiting a while tho).

I tried almost every thread here in xda about restoring, tried GSII_repair, kTool to restore it but none of them recovered the IMEI. I did not made a backup of efs but when I installed the Hydra H2O ICS Rom for GS2 it made the backup i guess, because a file called "efs-backup.tar.gz" was in a folder called .hydra inside the sd card.
does the drop of the device has anything to do with the erased IMEI?

I have installed stock roms from samsung using Odin, but then I discovered that efs folder get unmounted everytime I install the stock rom, phone just starts after flashing without android setup wizard, also when I long press power button, menu wont appear, device just shut down, after I restore the efs from the backup i have, and mount the efs using the CWM recovery would bring back the power button long press menu. everything else working except for Mobile Networks. and imei/baseband shows unknown
Drop Caused this problem
Hi all,
Thank you for replying on this thread and helped me figured out my problem, I have contacted Odia and he thinks that dropping the phone damaged the baseband chip inside the main board, not a flashing of the roms or efs folder issue. i have only 2 options either replace the whole board paying LKR 35,000 (New s2 costs only LKR 65,000) or use it as a MP3 player :crying:

[Q] Problem: IMEI number, serial number, baseband, etc. unknown

Hello!
I have a samsung galaxy SII that has lost all network connection (wifi works though). It's just a check of the pillars and cant either call or text.
When you go in and check Baseband it says unknown. Similarly, IMEI, serial number and all network related stuff.
I have searched and found EFS Pro but it did not work following the wizard.
Is there anyone out there who can help me get my phone working again?
Would appreciate any help very much!
Im running CM9 stable by the way.
Restore your EFS backup. No EFS backup (Gee, that would be a shock. Everyone does those ) either service centre & explain what you've been doing with the phone (and hand over the contents of your wallet to have it repaired), or if you contact Odia by PM (and wait patiently for a reply, do not hound him) he might be able to recover it for you.
Have you tried to reflash baseband through Odin?

Please answer these questions:
1. Did your problem occur after flashing in CWM recovery with your phone charging?
1. Do you have a good /efs backup?
2. Have you ever flashed Siyah kernel before?
3. Post screenshots of Settings>About phone, and Settings>About phone>Status on your phone.
thanks

1. I do not know, I got the phone from a friend who had the same problem with it. He ran the phone stock. So I flashed the CM9.1 and after it worked it in about a week and then it stopped working again simply. He bought the phone used so do not know what is done with it before. However, I had the charger when I tried to flash it yesterday, it is something that you should not do?
2. I tried some kind of stock EFS I found, but did not get better for it. Then if you go into the EFS folder in your phone, there are. .bak files are dated 2011 which might be ok?
3.I got it as soon as I get access to the phone.
Thanks for reply!

1. Yes, it has something to do with it. Don't flash in CWM recovery when connected to charger. It's a known bug.
2. I meant do you have a real backup of your /efs .tar or .rar? Check your internal and external SD for anything efs
3. Ok

IMEI lost when copying nandroid backup from old phone to new
Beware.
After receiving a new Nexus 5 to replace my cracked but still working one I immediately rooted/unlocked it and then copied my old N5 backup to it. Used WugFresh Tool Kit 1.8.4 to root and TWRP to recover and both phones were at Android 4.4.4 so what could go wrong? (I thought) Somewhere along the way the new N5's IMEI number was lost (=0) and so no service. Tried factory reset and recopying but no luck.
I factory restored the phone and returned it to Google. I expect some penalty for my antics. I will get delivery on another N5 today and will refrain from tinkering for awhile. Fun.
Correction to above: The newest Nexus 5 received today came with Android 4.4.2 not 4.4.4 as I assumed (and perhaps incorrectly) for the new N5 described above. This could have been the deal breaker, copying a 4.4.4 system over a 4.4.2 one, that screwed the IMEI (?).

[Q] Little bit stuck

Hi guys,
Ok so I have managed to get my GT-I9300 (inter) network free stuck in a boot loop, after trying to put it back to stock I somehow lost my EFS folder and now get an error "E: Faild to mount EFS (invalid argument)"........yes everyone face palm as Im another one of them. However I have got a copy of my EFS folder that I made with Ktool, but its at this point im stuck.
Im really sorry to be posting another about this issue but after spending hours searching I can't find an answer, lots about people not having a back up but nothing for those that have.
What i need to know is how do I get the back up onto my phone?
I have the stock firmware and the back up EFS folder, but Im stuck as to what to do to "mount" the EFS and replace all this. I have downloaded EFS prof but the phone won't connect to it, it also won't connect to the Kies package either.
I admit I am a noob and should of stuck with the crayons rather than messing with things that i didn't really know, but its done now and i would really love to get your help (in simple talk if possible).
Rather than someone typing out the instructions again why not follow the guide in general stickies on how to return to stock?
Once the phone boots again you can root and copy the efs backup onto the phoen again.
Cheer, will look there. Hadn't found that section in my search, will give it a go and keep my fingers crossed

Gone through the stickies, and followed the steps to return to stock. But due to the EFS issue its still stuck in bootloop, I flashed the stock recovery tar and then the stock rom.
Mmmmm I need to get the efs off the pc onto the phone again without having to have the phone boot
Obvious question, did you do a factory reset in recovery? Also, did you go from an EMG rom back to an earlier version when flashing stock?
You shouldn't need to flash a recovery, a stock rom downloaded from sammobile includes everything you need.
The only way to restore the efs folder in recovery would be to flash a custom recovery, like Philz, and then use AromaFM to copy the files to the phone.
Hi, yes tried the reset but it did nothing still stuck on bootloop. Erm EMG?? I had just put "I9300_Omega_v46.1_XXUFME7_md5_1C591CA15E556884E4B6AFC89E5A682F" on and then went back to stock.
Odd, a full stock flashed using odin should solve the efs mounting problem.
Did you remove kies before using odin? Did odin give any errors?
If in any doubt use this guidance to flash your stock rom, read it carefully and follow each step exactly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
Which stock rom are you trying to flash?
Im using this one BTU-I9300XXEMG4-20130724164355, I didnt remove Kies didn't know that could cause a problem. Thanks for the link will check that over, I'm just a bit gutted that I backed up as always and I'm still getting the issue ahhhhhhh.

You my friend are my hero (also the guy that wrote the guide)................followed the steps and the phone has booted no problem......I can not add my imei back with ktool once rooted again!!!!!
Glad to hear it worked, flashing a full stock rom often fixes the imei problem but if not then you have your backup to restore.
Easiest way to root is CF Auto Root, make sure you follow the guide exactly.

I might just take a break from messing, the misses gives me the dead eye every time I pick the ohone up now :crying:
One last question to you sir, the firmware of the guide has put me on 4.0.4, and its not letting me update off Kies. Is this because the build is old or not official. If I download the most upto date firmware off sammobile will I have to up date the kernal again too??
model number - GT-I9300
Android version - 4.0.4
baseband - I9300xxle8
Kernel version - 3.0.15-554452-user
build number - IMM76D.I9300XXALE8
cheersagain
Kernel is included
Ideally you should have used the guide to flash the EMG4 rom you'd already downloaded. Don't leave it long on that old firmware as it doesn't protect against SDS.
Oh, don't use kies as it's a waste of time.

Well its all gone a bit strange to be honest, after getting the phone to boot finally I went ahead and flashed the newer firmware I9300XXEMG6_I9300PHNEMG2_I9300CEEMG2_HOME.tar.md5 . The phone went straight back to bootloop!!!
So currently re doing what i did to get it running in the first place, problem is that leaves the phone in factory mode and the ktool says it is restoring my efs but it doesnt seem to do anything!
so after more grief off her im stuck again.
I have writen down PDA:ME7 PHONE:ME7 CSC:ME7 (eur) which i think is off the last working firmware but not sure which one it is!
Now you can get the phone to boot the problem is mostly done. You should find several threads in this forum on restoring the efs and factory mode (the two are related) also about bootloops with corrupt efs partition.
Well tried all of what i can and understand, still nothing! Stuck with the 004999010640000/01 imei, its out of factory mode and everything works bar the network connection. Managed to restock and set counter to No, all official and ready for warrenty fix....that is unless anyone has any ideas.
This thread answers all the efs questions, if you have now flashed an EMG stock then the efs partition is probably corrupt. As you have a backup this shouldn't stop you from getting it working.

Thanks again for all your help, I had followed these as best i could but no joy. I think I've 100% killed it. Like I say managed t get it back to stock and use the fantastic triangle away package....thus phone is as untouched......so swallowed the I told you so pill off her and took it to the service centre (which happens to only be 3miles from my house bonus). They did all the checks and accepted it under warrenty, down side i just have to wait up to two weeks its return!!!
Lots of lessons learnt, I origionally just wanted to delete the bloat ware and got carried away, thinking I was not a noob and some sort of phone god the roming followed.
Thanks again for all your help, I will read so much more about what to do if I do go down this line again.

Losing IMEI recently

Hello everyone,
I have SGS II (I9100) for about 2 years now. Im still on GB 2.3.4 KI4 (yeah dont ask why thats not my main issue here), rooted while ago with ZergRush exploit, and running HellCat's kernel. About two months ago, I fire up my phone and saw that I have no network. Went to About phone noticed that there is no baseband set, did *#06# and saw that my IMEI is empty. Luckily I had my EFS backed up with kTool, restored and was good to go. Today it happened to me again. Again restored with kTool and still good to go. So here is some facts regarding it, and I would like to know what might have causing it since I really dont update ROM's every 24 hours.
- 2 yearish old phone
- custom kernel with CWM
- did only one update from 2.3.2 (i think, cant recall what ROM was it shipped with) to 2.3.4
- didnt do factory reset after ROM upgrade
- happened before with soon-to-be-dead battery, but also with new one I got couple of days ago
- had running Dr.Web AV pretty much last year or so (I think only resident program running in background apart from loads of bloatware from Samsung)
Any info is more than welcomed since even I do have EFS backup, somehow I dont believe this is "expected behavior"...
Shall I (finally) upgrade to JB via Odin(Mobile Odin Pro?) and do factory reset/root after?
Can it be bad external card? Can internal memory can somehow be corrupted like hard drive with bad sectors or something? Really any info is more than welcomed.
Thank in advance
Here you go http://bit.ly/1bx9zPv
If you have actually read my post, before sending me to google, you would actually realized that I have EFS backup, and that I have recovered IMEI twice with kTool... Question is not HOW, but WHY. There is difference there. But hey, thanks for most ignorant reply you can actually think of. GZ you have just won the interwebs!
Hi,
i dont think its an hardware problem. I think that problem comes with your longtime running system und maybe that you didnt do a reset. Maybe you should finally upgrade to Jelly Bean - best way with Odin and a complete full wipe (save your data befor )
But keep cool, Jelly Bean looks very different to Gingerbread

Actually had some issues there... on 2.3.3 I had Hellcat kernel, wanted BLN, and some custom UOT Kitchen mods. Did full wipe from phone, and got it stucked in bootloop.
Let i a while, then said, **** it, and used Odin to flash 4.1.2 in from download mode. Stock ROM, so no binary counter issues. Started to boot up, showed me language selection and then crashed into bootloop... Assuming that it didnt finished wipe previously... Couldnt even got in into recovery (or was too stressed, but its 3 keys to press, dunno). Then, switched to download mode, flashed 4.0.3 that I had lying around, went to recovery, did wipe, and it booted up. Played with it, and in one point I said, "meh, Ill leave it on ICS"... Then something else said "You wuss! It took you 2 years to flash damn thing, and now you will stick to ICS?!?". Downloaded Mobile Odin Pro that I have purchased a while ago, flagged autoroot and flashed 4.1.2 from it. Again wiped it (just in case) and it booted up nicely. About 3 hours of stress, googling and browsing XDA Wife actually told my kid to stay away from me )
Then, wanted again BLN and thats the reason i skipped Philz and went for Siyah kernel instead. All nice and dandy so far *knock on the wood*
Still have EFS backup on numerous locations ofc
Cheers mate and thanks for participating

Lost Wifi and SIM recognition on my Poco F1...help!

Hello, I've owned this phone since March and upon purchase went straight for "rooting" and the Pixel Experience ROM, I was successful with the flashing and haven't looked back until last weekend
I updated the PE rom and something went wrong! As of today I have a device that doesn't "see" wifi and the sim card(s). I've re-flashed several times "manually" even used the Xiaomi Fastboot Toolkit
on the last 2 attempts hoping the "modem/sim" would flash, apparently nothings worked. Thinking about getting a replacement MB for it as a last resort. Help please? Phillip

Thank's for the reply, Yes, I've tried, with command line, MiTool and even Xiaomi's Pro tool I've been at this since yesterday The attempts mentioned "completed successfully" but NO wifi or SIM recognition! Motherboard? the phone has been restored to miui 10, and "actvated" using an "OTG" cable and looking thru the settings for any clues. the microsd card is recognized, bluetooth, everything else seems to be working. any thoughts? I've contacted "parts" dealers and I'm waitng. I think I'll take another break and come back to it over the weekend. Thanks for listening. Phillip

Phillip

I've been on custom ROMs since 2013 and fixing smartphones since 2015. I've only seen hardware related damage because of software only once and it was after someone flashed the full firmware of an entirely different phone into his own.
Don't spend the money on the motherboard before checking other software aspects.
Also (IF it's a hardware issue) your antenna cable might have gotten out of place because of a fall. You can't really know until you open the phone.
One can't really know, until they open the phone. If you're still on warranty, get it to your repair center.

I didn't realize it looked like an urge for someone to open their phone without knowing what to do.
I'll edit.

Phillip

It seems you lost/corrupted your EFS partition which contains your device IMEI/wifi/communication settings.
This is a problem in Xiaomi phones and Samsung phones as far as I remember. Once you start playing with custom roms this problem happens. I've always backup this "EFS" partition as soon as I unlock any xiaomi phone and it saved me couple of times when custom roms corrupts this partition I just boot to TWRP and restore it and it always works and I get sim card / wifi back again.
I'm not sure if there is a way to restore your EFS partition other than send it back for service center.
Based on your reply, Question(s) If the phone is "working/functioning" in my case "without wifi & sim" can I assume that my efforts to "bring back to stock" were successful? This is really what I've been wrestling with, Firmware, Stock rom, etc. Bootloader is still unlocked, Stock Recovery in place, I hope all that leaves is securing part(s) in this case a MotherBoard (modular?) to get "wifi & simcard" working again? Thank's XDA

REPLY... funny that you mention this "EFS" one of the backups (4) of the PE rom I remember seeing this partition and only this one "saved" how can I re-flash this? Its still on the SD card I pulled, I'm going to check it or just save it for a tech when I bring it in for service and discuss it.

Easy just boot to TWRP and chose restore. Select your backup which contains EFS (Deselect other options like system, data etc.) and restore it.
Then boot to android and it should pickup the sim card and wifi.
Taking a break, tired... I have to re-install TWRP, then I'll check the SDcard tomorrow, and Post a GOOD conclusion... I hope! while i have your attention, as far as "service" any reccomendations? I split my time in Philadelphia/Maryland or I could ship if needed. Thank-you!
This happened to my girls poco, she has PE on it. All of a sudden thebphone dint read sim or sd (wifi was good). I switched the slots for each, had no effect, then i took her whole tray and inserted it into my poco where they worked. My sim and sd dint work in hers.
I updated vendor/firmware(no effect), clean flashed rom etc did everything, made a google backup and a twrp backup of data partition.
I ended up using mi flash to put miui fully back and it still dint work. I spent the night trying all this stuff and went to bed frustrated.
I woke up and decided ill just bring it to the phone repair shop downstairs and see (he has a poco). I have no idea how but we put her sim in and it worked, just like that, sd card also. I went back up installed twrp, flashed pe, restored data and she was right back to where she was after moving backup files.
I dont know if all this helps but its my short anecdote.

I knew there was a "fix" I couldn't believe it was a "hardware" problem either... 2 good articles on "EFS Partitions" one here on XDA Read Up all!!! I'll post a "conclusion" when I
attempt tomorrow, need a break! Thanks too all that replied. Phillip
Poco is BACK!!! It was the EFS partition!, not a hardware issue at all, recovered from a backup after re-installing TWRP. Thanks to all... and especially Wolf88!
Sorry for the delay, out enjoying the day, ... https://dl.twrp.me/beryllium/ ... I used "3.2.3.2- Beryllium" if you have a "backup" just de-select everything but the "EFS" partition, thats what I did and it recovered successfully! Good luck!

ROM doesn't matter. So long as you have the EFS partition backed up, it is good.
Some time ago it happened to me as well - no cellular and wifi. I fixed it by restoring from a full backup. I keep it on the SD so I can torture my phone any way I see fit and get away with it when I sc*ew things up.
Good to know the specific reason for losing the comms tho. Thanks for specifying. Next time I get there I'll start with efs restoration, instead of full system restore.
