[Help] Installing ota on officially unlocked bootloader and rooted phone. - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

As the tiltle says I want to install ota update on my phone. It's bootloader is officially unlocked, rooted amd xposed is also installed. I'm right now on cofface twrp.

Unless you made a backup of unmodified stock boot and system before rooting etc.
The ota will probably fail.
If you have made a backup of them? Then restore the backup and apply the OTA.
Make backups again if the OTA gets applied. Then root and install xposed again.
If you can follow this thread you see the steps involved in applying an ota.

I didnt made the back up of those files but today i unrooted, uninstalled xposed, flashed stock recovery but still ota fails.
i even followed the guide and replaced emmc file and modified updater script but twrp was not able to flash the update and can i install recovery rom using twrp even when im rooted and xposed is install adn do i lose data by flashing it?

Once you have modified your system and boot images. you can not unmodified them by removing the changes. Because the images will still be modified!
I don't know if you can flash the latest rom, without losing your data. What rom are you using?
I flashed xiaomi.eu rom, to avoid having to worry about getting and applying OTA updates. As detail in my previous post.
With xiaomi.eu rom, I can flash the updated roms without losing data.

You could try, making a TWRP backup of your data partition.
Flash the latest version of your rom.
Then if data gets wiped, restore the TWRP backup of data partition.

My phone was officially unlocked, used alka twrp. I can still have ota update of cause failed on incremental update, alter rebooted the phone, I received the second ota update full rom and flashed it , flashed superSU and exposed v86 with success.

To flash recovery MIUI rom through twrp, delete the emmc_appsboot.mbn file from the firmware_update folder inside the rom zip file, and then flash rom through ALKA TWRP .
To update rom, download OTA through updater app or MIUI site and then open the OTA zip file and delete emmc_appsboot.mbn file inside the firmware-update folder and then flash through ALKA TWRP .

January Security Update incremental .zip - Directly from Google's servers

I got the update for the January Security Update today. I grabbed the .zip's location and the link on Google's servers is:
https://android.googleapis.com/pack...51c56752.signed-angler-MMB29P-from-MMB29M.zip
Hope it helps others!
PSA: this is not flashable over custom ROMs, and cannot be used to install the factory OS from nothing. That's what the factory images are for . This .zip is solely to incrementally update from the December security update to the January one.
Is there an easy way to flash this update.zip without the need of a computer?

Unless you have a custom recovery, no. Sorry about that
Updated. Thanks for the link!
I have a rooted, stock ROM and TWRP and with several Xposed Modules, can I flash this?
Also, I don't have the December update, where do I find that?
And lastly, I'm on MDB08L Build, will that work?
For those wanting to use this update and have completely stock system based on MMB29M. Boot into recovery and do an ADB sideload update.zip (rename zip first). Mine updated with no issues.

If you've got all that set up, why not just update using the full factory image (without the wipe)

I assumed I'll lose all my system modifications (i.e. Xposed Modules and their settings) as well as losing root and TWRP and having to reroot again.

This is exactly the file you need if you don't have custom recovery, don't have root, and have not unlocked bootloader. It is the same file that would eventually come to you OTA. You do however need access to adb and a computer. I don't think this is flashable with a custom recovery.
Thanks..
Thanks for this file bro. dont need to wait.
Alright, feeling like a complete noob, here. I'm on systemless root 2.61 with TWRP. I fastboot flashed the stock boot.img and stock recovery, then tried to sideload the OTA zip. I got a "system contains unexpected contents" error, then installation aborted. Now, with systemless root, I had the understanding that flashing the stock system.img would not be necessary. I was not using systemless root before when I flashed the previous OTA zip. Can anyone spot where I might have gone wrong?

No it does not
I got it:
For systemless root, fastboot flash: 1) boot.img; 2) recovery.img; 3) vendor.img; 4) system.img
Boot to recovery and enter sideloade mode. adb sideload [update].zip
Reboot to bootloader. Re-flash TWRP, then in TWRP re-flash kernel (if custom) & superSU.
I used a toolkit to root my 6P. I'm using rooted stock rom. I got an OTA update but it seems I can't update it that way as per all others. So how do I go about installing this on my mobile? Do I need to unroot, flash stock recovery & then flash the new image? Then again I have to root?
fyi: i'm rooted with systemless root and twrp
I tried to take this update per usual as i would if i were unrooted, of course that didn't work totally. i assumed i would just find the update.zip file (i did: /data/data/com.google.android.gms/app.download/update.zip, icywtk) but when i tried to flash that it said the zip was corrupted. i deleted the zip and now it still says my december build is up to date. can't we just flash the update.zip with twrp? i did allow for the system to be modified this time when i booted twrp.

i just tried this again with the same results. it says that the installer is expecting a different build (the one that my settings app shows i'm on) but that i have a build called huawei/mmasomething/ dee_stroyer somethingsomething. (i would post exactly what it says but i've already rebooted into system). I do remember something with "dee_stroyer" when i was rooting but it's not the system...
anyone else have any ideas? i'd like to just update normally and keep my data... and the stock android with root.
EDIT: also, the update won't update my recovery will it? i don't want to have to reflash that. i should be able to update even when i'm away from a computer haha.
Rooted with TWRP. I just tried an ADB sideload and get the same error.

How to flash OTA through TWRP?

I have official unlocked bootloader, with TWRP that patches boot.img automatically, and rooted Global Beta ROM on SD version. I successfully flashed full ROM zip without any problem, by just flashing in TWRP without any modifications or any other boot.img.
But I never flashed OTA before. I'm a little paranoid about this, I don't wanna brick my phone again. By my given condition, I should be able to flash OTA zips without any modifications, and keeping my TWRP and unlocked bootloader, right?

No I didn't. I flashed the modified one that I do not have to flash boot.img when flashing miui rom
Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk
You don't need boot.img if you use official TWRP.
http://linuxwelt.blogspot.de/2016/04/twrp-recovery-flashen-xiaomi-anleitung.html
Flash TWRP (just check the Screenshots) and after that you can flash OTA without problems (I did it 2 times). Have no problems.
But first take the new TWRP and make a backup with EFS on a USB Stick or sd card. If something go wrong you can restore your RN3P.
Official twrp?
Lol yea u mite be able to flash ota with official twrp but won't it lock the bootloader and boot.img..
But there mite be a way to make it work .
Use the original boot.img of the current ROM and flash then flash the otathat(so there won't be error 7) will fix the issue .and the twrp will auto patch the boot.img after update

Is is possible to update with TWRP?

Hello,
I have received last week a notification about the new update (from 31th May). Once the file was downloaded, my device has rebooted and arrived in the TWRP recovery. Nothing happened. I checked where the zip file was and I tried to install with TWRP but without success. TWRP said me that META-INFO is missing in the zip file. Is there a way to update with TWRP or have I to wait a new complete ROM with this update?
Thanks
Worked for me,
Which version of TWRP do you have?
It is the 3.0.2.1.
The exact message is "Could not find 'META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary' in the zip file.
Not working take a look at TWRP site I also tried with 3.0.2.1 and after error update is automatically erased.

Thank you Mr. Claude... effectively, with this FAQ on the TWRP site I understand now why it is impossible to apply an OTA update with TWRP.
Have a nice day
You're Welcome. Also on my LeTv x600 worked with TWRP but is not identical update system like P9000.

For me OTA update worked just fine on the P9000 with TWRP 3.0.2-1
only had to flash SuperSU again after the update.
Hello sundawn,
Can you just explain how you made your update? Have you a link to download the update.zip with the META-INF missing ?
Thanks.

Are you sure there was OTA update (with stock ROMs and from Update menu) not regular ROM download .zip made for TWRP and update through TWRP?(in this case you need an TWRP update zip).
There is 4 methods of update of ROMs:
1. OTA (On The Air) in this case updates is downloaded automatically or no (depending you're settings) direct on phone.
2. Download update.zip and flashing from stock recovery.
3. Download ROM.... update.zip for TWRP and flashed from TWRP.
4. Full new update ROM.zip and flashing with SpFlashTools.
Edit: Today successfully managed to update latest OTA 31.05 (but only this because seems there isn't a full update) via TWRP 3.0.2.1.

Same here.
After getting the update notification, I just taped apply and TWRP actually started the update.
Could be you have to remove the sd card, move your SIM from tray 2 to tray 1, and then try updating with the OTA again. That worked for me, after getting errors trying to update with the sd card inserted.
Hi, please, I installed some OTA update and forgot that I have TWRP. And now phone will always boot TWRP. Does somebody know where update is downloaded so I can install it?
Thank you
why make something so difficult? i would just give up on otas if i were you, ive never received any of them, just update manually.. download the file, grab a cup of coffee, and install it
I have the same issue, would like to know how what to flash to recover from this, TWRP for me is working well, but I can not boot to anything else.

Full factory flash with SP Flash Tools was the only way I was able to recover, at least I became very practised at it.

About keeping OTA and TWRP

Just unlocked the bootloader , latest MIUI global beta. Here are the questions which needs valid answers
1. Need to flash TWRP and root. Which twrp image will not need any encryption disabler flashed every time I flash a rom? please give the link of the most stable and recent version of it.
2. I will flash magisk. How will it behave with OTA on miui global beta?
3. Will I receive OTA update? If I do, how to flash it properly? I dont want to roll back to stock recovery just to flash an ota and then again flash twrp. And I dont want to flash full rom either.
4. If I am able to flash OTA through twrp, do I have to wipe anything? Im asking if I will loose any data or not.
5. As far as I know, I need to unroot everytime before I flash OTA? what does that mean actually? If im rooted, will I not be notified of the OTA update through the updater app? Or do I have to manually downlaod the ota from the web?
6. And one more thing. I dont want the clock on the top left in any screen, lock or home. Which mod will remove the clock and add regular notification icon? (working with miui beta ofcourse)

I can answer your questions partially.
2 & 3. Flashing TWRP and Magisk will result in OTA zip not being downloaded. Instead, the full ROM will be downloaded automatically.
4. AFAIK, you can't flash the OTA zip through TWRP.
5. If you want the OTA, you will have to be completely stock, no modifications to system files. Only then the OTA zip will download and only then you can flash it. You will ofcourse be notified of the availability of the OTA zip even if you are rooted but it will not download because it does a check of your system before downloading. Only the full zip will download if you are rooted.
It is much easier (atleast for me) to accept the full download and flash it through TWRP and then boot back to TWRP (to preserve it and to avoid overwriting by stock recovery) before booting into system. If you only wipe Dalvik and cache, there is no need to reflash TWRP and Magisk. Ofcourse if TWRP gets overwritten somehow, then flashing it and Magisk again is not a big thing.

OrangeFox Recovery has a feature to disable force encryption without flashing the DFE.zip everytime you flash a custom rom.
And it supports MIUI OTA Updates.

Some custom roms are AOSP based so all MIUI bloatware or features are not available in AOSP based custom roms.

EEa(EU) rom 10.3.3.0 update

EEa(EU) rom 10.3.3.0 update
Received it too yesterday and all is ok.
Does anyone know how to flash that update using TWRP? I have rooted my Stock ROM with TWRP, and the Update is downloaded OTA and then reboots to recovery, but TWRP obviously is unable to install it: First it doesn't ask for the password to decrypt the data partition and shows the crypted content of the partition, making it impossible to see or select the downloaded update. A reboot into recovery decrypts the data partition and shows the downloaded Update (as a ZIP) in the folder /downloaded_rom. I tried to install that ZIP from TWRP manually, but to no avail - all you get is an error message.
Edit: Forget the question. Seems the phone healed itself. The first OTA download was an update 10.3.1 to 10.3.3 with a size of around 500 MB, and that couldn't be installed. When the System Updater saw this didn't succeed, it downloaded the complete 10.3.3 Package (2,2 GB) OTA, and installed that via TWRP with no problems whatsoever. I lost Magisk, which i needed to reinstall, but other than that, everything's fine.
Edit 2: The complete package obviously also overwrites TWRP, which i had to reinstall, too.

You will need to flash Magisk immediately after the ROM to stop MIUI restoring stock recovery.
