Can I change what a button does, in an existing app? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For example, changing the menu button in an app, so when you click it, it likes a picture, rather than showing the menu
I have root and xposed
Thanks

You would have to re-write the app itself.

Change Home Long-Press to be specific app shortcuts?

Is this possible at all? Or already done, maybe? would it be an app that could possibly run and replace this action or does it require a rom modification to do it?
I'd prefer specific apps to always be in my home long-press popup than just the most recent ones (ex: mail, web browser, twitter, facebook etc the ones that i am typically trying to get to )
Any thoughts?
I wouldn't mind having menu long press go to the dialer app so we can have a dedicated dialer button we can use when we have other apps open. Long pressing the menu button brings up the quick search bar which we already have a button for.

long pressing the menu button brings up the keyboard ... not the search...
Long press of menu brings up search on the vibrant, try it. (i read another thread that this isn't the same on other devices)
I assume that given that Vlingo can take over the long press of the search and home replacements can take over the long press of home, an app could be written to take over the long press of home to change its action as well?
I'm not a programer so I wouldn't have a clue of how to write an app that replaces that home/recent apps pop up to allow your own choice of shortcuts
Oh yeah, I guess I was wrong... I have to many devices to keep track of the differences...

I *kind-of* got what I wanted via the app "App Launcher" (link: http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.talondesigns.quicklaunch - $1.99)
It looks identical to the popup that you get with a long press of the home button - you can select the shortcuts you want to be in it, BUT it is a long press of the search key instead. Functionally, it is what I want, but I'd prefer to take over the home button action rather than using the search button, as I had that one assigned to Vlingo.

N64oid

I can play games just fine, but how do quit the game and play another. I currently reboot to change games. Thanks.

I think I had the same issue when I first used N64oid. N64oid has "stretch to fit screen" enabled by default. This makes it so that you do not see the status bar (with the necessary menu button on it) during rom play.
I fixed this by starting N64oid anew. You should be at the "select rom" screen. Before loading anything, select the "menu" button. Then select "settings", then "audio & video settings", then uncheck the "stretch to fit screen" box under the video settings. Exit out to the "select rom" screen.
Load your rom. Now you should have access to the status bar with the menu button while in gameplay. To exit out of roms just select "menu, then "more", then "close". Hope that works for you like it did me.
Get "button savior". It will put an unobtrusive overlay on the screen which provides back functionality if you're rooted.

I've also found that in certain games (Angry Birds Seasons for one) that the "N" button works as a back button so I can access the game menus and then I can select "quit". I haven't tried on other games yet but thought I'd throw this out there....

This. I can't say how happy I've been now that I can actually open up menus and go back when the status bar decides to hide those soft buttons, or when an app goes full screen.
I had the problem of not being able to get Terminal Emulator out of white-on-blue text... it was hideous...

I tried the button savior but still cannot exit rom to choose another rom. Did I just miss something?

When you hit the back button on Button Savior what does it do? Shouldn't that exit the current emulation, and allow you to choose another ROM?
Or rather, better: what exactly are you trying with button savior, and what are you getting? Clicking on the back button results in N64roid doing nothing? Or?
It took me awhile to figure out how to use Button Savior until I realized that there was a tiny little translucent trigger-arrow-button to open up the button tray... I don't know what your noob level is though. (That's why I presented my top-level noob experience for you.)

When I hit the back button it does nothing. All other button do not help with this problem. But have enjoyed the button savior app. It is very useful.

Button Savior did not not work in N64oid for me at first either. But after the suggestion to use it in this thread, I went back and was able to get it to work.
The key for me was clicking the menu button (the one with 4 squares in a 2x2 configuration) in Button Savior TWICE. The first time I click the button I get a message that says Button Savior has been granted Super User permissions. The second time I click the menu button I get the options for that menu, like I would if I used the menu button in the Nook status bar.
I think if you are not getting these options then Button Savior may not be functioning properly for you. Maybe reinstall it? Or maybe install another version of it to see if that helps? Good luck!
Button savior has a quirk. After a reboot, *before* you use button savior at all, you must re-enable usb debugging. Use anycut to create a shortcut for "application settings", click development, enable usb debug.
This assumes that your nook is rooted, otherwise only the home key will ever work.

Uninstalled and reinstalled and that fixed my eyes. I noticed the close button (very hard to read) so now i can pick another game. Sorry for wasting everyones time.

[Q] SystemUI n button tweak question

When using the alternate SystemUI file to make the n button function as a home button, how do you then get to those items on the default B&N quick select menu? Things like B&N store, web browser, library, etc. Is there an easy way to make these same items appear as links on the home screen itself? I have the app manager tweak, so I know how to put side loaded apps there. Just haven't been able to figure out how to put the default B&N apps there.
Thanks!

create a shortcut to the Nook Home I used anycut. I also used that app for the development menu and a few other hidden menus. or try a long press on the home screen and from there you shopuld get a window to app apps, shortcuts, or widgets to the home screen. Hope this helps.

Best way to add app-drawer button to the button-bar?

The "recent apps" button is a great addition to the UI, but I'd also like to have a dedicated button on the button bar for opening the app drawer.
To those of you more versed in UI-fu than I am: what would be the best way for me to add an app-drawer button to the button bar, eg. right next to the "recent apps" button, so as to facilitate direct access to the app drawer from any app?
Thanks
Use Nova Launcher and map the home button alternate mode to open the app drawer. So in effect, one press on home will send you to your home screen and the second press will put you in your app drawer.

This. Other than that, its not possible unless the rom itself is edited to do it, which again, isn't possible, because different homescreens have different app drawers.

You wouldn't happen to know of any SystemUI mods that fit the bill I suppose...

How to open in app menu?

Hi all. It may seem a silly question and probably it is but there are apps (in this case Touchdown mail client) that haven't an icon to open the in app settings menu. With my previous phones I used a physical button, usually long press on the back button, to open it. But how to do it with the single button p9000? Thank you.
Very good question, they seem to have forgotten about apps that need a physical key for menu, have you tried enabling the softkeys to see if the menu button appears on them for you? Can the "Smart Button" not be setup to be the menu key? or is it only to open apps? I not played with it myself..
Still searching how to have the MENU inside applications, softkeys does not work !
I would ask the software maker! The phone maker won't add more physical buttons.
And multiple press are always software driven!
Even if the phone maker did, that won't help you out with the old hardware...
Doesn't seem to be an answer anywhere online so here goes:
Go to settings > Navigation bar > Turn On.
Go to app you need a menu on > swipe up from bottom to bring up the Nav bar.
Three dots appear on the end of the nav bar. Done.
If the three dots don't appear; click on the recent tasks button and then go back into the app and they should come up.
Tried and tested with EZ Drop.
- Doesn't seem to work with apps with the built in "three dots" menu.
I use ‘Menu Button (No root)’ by JetToast free on the Play store, to get round this problem.
