TWRP not installing/Stuck on Stock Recovery after a Revert to Stock - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

Hello,
I've unlocked my bootloader and subsequently had installed TWRP (months ago).
Not long after, I decided to go back to stock for a while, and went back to CM a month ago.
However, I realized back then that I was loading into stock recovery even after taking the steps to install TWRP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/development/root-kiw-l24-usa-kiwi-t3305190)
During these steps, there were no errors (fastboot/adb logs show all things were done successfully).
However, some funky quirk (that I don't remember) got me loaded with TWRP once, which gave me the window to install CM (I remember it involving having to be connected to the PC).
Now I'm trying to install a new CM build, but I can't get it loading TWRP.
I've downloaded the TWRP Manager App, which tells me that I have TWRP 3.0.0.0, but when I reboot to recovery, I am given the stock EMUI recovery.
Does anyone know what is happening in this case? Has anyone experienced a similar issue?
Thank you!

Reinstallt it try this TWRP http://www.mediafire.com/download/15g5i63gke9ddgp/kiwi_twrp_3-21_recovery.img its version 3.0.2.0 (Most recent)

The most recent is 5-14 (also based on v3.0.2.0 ).
TWRP 5.14
3-21 was built on March 21, and 5-14 on May 14.

@yuweng posted a version of 3.0.2.0 that will make images of many partitions on the phone that even 5-14 ignores
you can download it here >> https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24588212152305793
please note it was discovered early on that you cannot share the oeminfo partition on the phone, it's locked to your device and can / will brick a phone it's not from. just be careful what you restore with such a powerful version of TWRP.
@undesputed
I have seen this before where flashing TWRP does not seem to stick.
boot to the bootloader and see if frp is unlocked ... if not you need to
boot to your OS and remove your google account from the device
reboot to the bootloader and attempt the flash again. if it still fails to stick you can always just use
fastboot boot twrp.img and it will work just fine... just not installed

@clsA
frp is labeled as "UNLOCK" as oppsed to bootloader labeled as "UNLOCKED".
If it's just about removing my google account, will this be resolved the next time I do a factory reset?
Nevertheless, thank you so much for the command fastboot boot twrp.img, I realized that that was what I had used the last time.
I'm currently able to boot into TWRP this way. Awesome!

@clsA
Thanks for the link & infos.
Can you tell which features are added in this new TWRP ? name of the partitions ?
Thanks.

I don't use all the features, so i will maybe miss the changes.
Never used OTG to made a backup (I use ext_SD), I don't know if it works with other builds of TWRP.

[RECOVERY] TWRP for Onetouch Idol 3

I've made TWRP for the Onetouch Idol 3. It should work when you flash it, but using it is still a try at your own risk procedure. Your bootloader must be unlocked ONLY on LP (MM is locked so cant flash on it)to use this recovery. Fastboot mode is used to flash or boot this recovery. To enter fastboot mode, adb reboot bootloader
To permanently flash it:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1bbb flash recovery twrp.img
Update through existing TWRP:
Code:
Flash as image > recovery
The download is up on the AndroidFileHost

Try to flash this recovery from older TWRP recovery. I don't have problems.
Download the latest TWRP image file (.img) from the download link.
Boot into the TWRP recovery. ( ...
Go to install and find and select the Images button. ( ...
Browse to the image that you downloaded and select it.
Choose recovery and swipe to flash.
You are done!
Little notice, Restarting to recovery won't do. You will have to manually start it to recovery by VolUP+Pow. Especially if you're on 6.0+

Hey,
I still have some issues flashing this, which is weird considering I can flash other versions of TWRP of this forum.
I'm updating to this version from my current twrp. The flash seems to succeed but then the recovery mode is broke and I got the fastboot mode starting instead...
I also tried to flash it from fastboot, the same issue is happening.
So I finally tried to do a fastboot boot to try it, and I got this error : "dtb not found".
I have a french 6045Y
Update :
According to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTdKmceC5xU I should update the bootloader of my phone, which seems a good idea because my 6045Y might have a custom bootloader made by my mobile provider.
Is it possible to update the bootloader of my phone ? Where can I find one ? There's nothing on google
Update 2 :
My bootloader is likely to be old because I never received the MM update, I only have Android 5 (my phone provider is not updating it)

Your stock (made by Alcatel) bootloader is different than custom made here by devs. You'll first have to unlock it, push by fastboot commands to the phone custom one, than you can install roms, etc. Try searching the threads here on forum, I done this part 2yrs ago, so I can't recall every step.

I had the same problem. Solved it by flashing the GooGly ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/development/rom-idol3-6045y-eu5-2-mm-googly-t3519943
Flashing takes a long time but it updates everything. Note that you will lose flashboot and will have to flash things through TWRP from then on.

I did try that but couldn't boot the latest LOS14.1 with it. Others have reported success so it may be due to the exact variant.
I have realized that this version of TWRP (3.1.1) doesn´t backup EFS partition but "firmware" partition, what means backup of firmware?
Works great with 6045Y
Thanks you for your work
Hello.
I'm trying to restore a backup (for going back to stock rom coming fro LineageOS 13.0 for Alcatel ONETOUCH IDOL 3 4.7 rom by alecbl.).
That backup was maden with this https://forum.xda-developers.com/id...-2-r5-twrp-t3574214/post73664585#post73664585, but launching 'adb restore Backup_14052017.bak' on command line I get this message in the phone (in TWRP):
command is: 'adbrestore' and there is no value
E:Unable to find file system (first period).
E:Unable to find file system (first period).
E:Unknown restore method for '/system'
E:ADB restore failed
Done processing script file
I'm using TWRP 3.1.0-0 and I've been told to use your version.
The problem is my phone is 6039, while in your download page I see
twrp-3.1.1-idol3.img
for the Alcatel Idol 3 5.5, by FireLord
Does this mean it works only with 6045?
And do you know how I can restore that backup?

Le Eco Pro 3 X727 Twrp Backup : Clean Full Stock X727 recovery EUI 5.8.21s

Return to Un-modded Stock:
Bootloader unlocked and TWRP and Root included
The file is 4gb compressed to 2gb. Depending on your connection it will probably take 20 to 45 minutes to download.
Be Advised
Do your research before flashing anything, I am not responsible for any damage caused to your device, due to impatience and missed steps. However, rest assured this recovery is solid and will absolutely return your X720 or X727 to stock 5.8.21s (with the bootloader already unlocked, TWRP installed and rooted)
I was asked by several people if I would be willing to share a link to my Stock X727 recovery, I created this thread to provide the 5.8.21s recovery for anyone who is experiencing dire issues or is simply wanting to restore the last official x727 recovery, as a daily driver or as a means to troubleshoot their issues by returning to the fully stock rom, stock partitions and ready to start over.
Attached is my full stock TWRP Recovery for my Le Eco Pro 3, version: 5.8.21s (X727)
It is a clean TWRP backup recovery that I did not mod in any way other than unlocking the bootloader.
The link is to my Google Drive account. https://drive.google.com/open?id=19dtLHmE5bsx5mdtEXOns4Z5drpeY79Em
The file is compressed
Ensure that you perform a full wipe before applying this recovery, and that you know what you are doing before attempting to install.
Please note that any changes that you make to your device is done at your own risk.
Please use caution and make sure that you have TWRP recovery installed.
Be in the habit of booting back to recovery before booting to system....This is a good practice for ensuring TWRP stays installed
You must unpack the downloaded 7zip file, before it will be useable.
As long as you can boot into TWRP and have root access you will have the full permissions needed to install anything , and reverse any actions that do not workout as planned.
Personally, I make a backup of my existing installation prior to making any changes. I recommend that you do the same. If you buy an OTG adapter and a USB 3.0 drive it takes 5 minutes.
The steps provided on the following link can be used to install my recovery file. https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-pro3/how-to/guide-return-to-stock-lock-bootloader-t3539513
When clicking the link, Google will attempt to scan. Click download to see the file, and then choose download if wanted.

I don't have time at the moment to provide lengthy instructions. With respect, I am providing a working, clean unlocked recovery file and pointing the way to instructions already that exist all throughout the LeEco forums.
But here's a quick answer
First use TWRP to reset your phone with a clean wipe, like you would for any ROM. Set developer options to the standard settings.
Next, your storage is encrypted. So it needs to be formatted. Use TWRP format the storage only. Then reboot to recovery.
****Important****
Don't ever format the storage without ensuring that you have a TWRP recovery. Always check the boxes to check if TWRP is installed before swiping. If you don't have a recovery you have a soft brick.
For you information, TWRP recovery is installed on it's on it very own partition. Formatting the storage does not affect the TWRP partition. Nonetheless, if you see the check box option, make sure they are checked.
I would suggest that you install the all in one tool : https://www.google.com/amp/s/forum....pment/tool-tool-one-mauronofrio-t3580611/amp/
This tool helps a lot and makes this stuff easier if are new to flashing custom Roms.. The all in one tool will update the Google driver and ADB installation on your computer.
After you format your drive you will have to flash the recovery from the PC. The links provided show all of the steps, or you can use the all for one tool. When your storage is encrypted you have no choice but to format.
If you use the all in one tool , see their page for instructions.
Read the instructions, then read them again. when learning something new it's a good idea to take notes.
Do not deviate from those steps or you could brick your phone.
There have been many people that have messaged me by PM who successfully returned to stock using my recovery, so it will work as long as you are careful and follow the instructions verbatim and you will be fine. Plus, It's a great idea to create your own working recovery before you begin.
Reminder, you are restoring to stock under you own discretion, I am not responsible if you miss a key step, have a power outage, use faulty cables or brick your device.
One final suggestion, when you install the recovery make sure your phone is fully charged. Unplug all unneeded external peripherals from your desktop computer.
Temporarily, disable antivirus, insert USB cable into the back of your desktop PC. Those outlets provide more power.
Please look past any typos, I typed this on little keys.
One last suggestion

No it will not keep twrp. follow the instructions in the link I provided above, there was no reason to duplicate the instructions on my post.
The difference is that my backup will restore your phone to Eui 5.8.21s with bootloader unlocked. You will need to reflash Twrp and root the phone with Magisk if you want to keep Twrp recovery ( that is what I would do) You will not be able to get OTA updates. But that doesn't matter because there probably not be any more OTA updates for the x727
Thank you, sir! This is great work. I was able to restore back to stock.
On the strange side of thing, my TWRP was saved. Previously, I was running AICP, but having multiple sound issues with it.
Here are the steps I followed to restore:
1) Move the file to OTG flash drive
2) Restore through TWRP via Restore
For my 727, it just reboot on logo, and doesn't go past it.

For me, I had the quickest experience by flashing Magisk afterwards. The stock Rom , Rooted, and with Xposed is actually pretty sweet.

It should not take more than 10 minutes, and will usually startup in 5. I just now restored one of my X727's with this recovery, using the OTG method that the last person used and viola in worked so there's no doubt. I have always used ADB until now.
However, unlike the other poster, I did lose Twrp and had to reinstall it.
Always, Always Ensure Twrp is permanently installed
Make sure that you are on the latest version of Twrp : https://twrp.me/leeco/leecolepro3.html
Run Magisk, install Rom, Install Magisk again
Personally, I use the latest version of Magisk : https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/beta-magisk-v13-0-0980cb6-t3618589
You want a fully clean install before you flash.
Instructions are redundant of XDA: if you want something other than what you have read already: Click on my account history to find detailed instructions, ( I type too much, too often) Under most thanked, you can quickly find detailed instructions for installing , Roms, Rooting, Installing Twrp, How to wipe to avoid any issues.
Finally, if for some reason it still doesn't work, the file may have been corrupted.
Worst Case scenario : there are other recoveries available on XDA. Beware of the edited versions, they do not work as well as an unadulterated recovery.

It actually worked for second time without any issues. Just can't get the root, but will follow your instructions.

This recovery is stock EUI 5.8.21s. The exception is that the bootloader is unlocked, and it has TWRP Recovery instead of EUI Recovery. I do not remember which version of Magisk I Installed. I would advise that you flash the newest version of Magisk and you will not have any safety net issues.
If you are wanting a complete return to stock, you should instead reflash the stock Full Rom, which will reinstall EUI recovery and lockdown the bootloader.

Zenfone 3 zoom TWRP

Since there's no thread about it yet (in here then), I'll just make this one so that there won't be any more confusion for TWRP links.
Do keep in mind that if you use the official bootloader unlock method, you won't receive OTA updates anymore from Asus.
Have a great day and happy flashing

I wonder when he opens the twrp he asks for the PIN number , password or something?

TWRP 3.2.3-2 for Pixel 3

MTP does not work in TWRP on the Pixel 3 and will not work until we have time to update the TWRP MTP implementation. You may still use adb to push and pull files.
Pixel devices have 2 "slots" for ROMs / firmware. TWRP will detect whichever slot is currently active and use that slot for backup AND restore. There are buttons on the reboot page and under backup -> options to change slots. Changing the active slot will cause TWRP to switch which slot that TWRP is backing up or restoring. You can make a backup of slot A, switch to B, then restore the backup which will restore the backup of A to slot B. Changing the slot in TWRP also tells the bootloader to boot that slot.
The zip install method installs TWRP to both slots.
Installation:
If you already have TWRP installed: Download the latest zip and install the zip using TWRP.
If you do not already have TWRP installed: Download both the img and the zip. Copy the zip to your device. You will need to have fastboot binaries and the correct drivers installed. Power off your device completely. Hold volume down and turn on the device. Your device should now be in the bootloader. Connect the device to your PC. Open a command window and run the following command from the proper location:
fastboot boot path/to/twrp.img
This will temporarily boot TWRP on your device. If you are using a lockscreen pin/pattern/password and do not get prompted to enter your passord, reboot to the bootloader and try again. Go to install and browse to the zip and install the zip. If you are currently rooted, you will need to reflash the stock boot image before installing TWRP. After installing the stock boot image, follow the instructions for installing TWRP. Once TWRP is installed, you will need to reflash root.
If you accidently flash TWRP to your device using fastboot instead of temporarily booting the image, you will need to download the latest factory image for your device and reflash the boot image.

On the Pixel 2 XL touch was broken unless you used a custom kernel. I guess it's the same on 3. If you boot TWRP using fastboot it should allow touchscreen.
You would think after buying the Pixel 1, 2 and 3 I would have this whole A/B slot thing down pat but I dont LOL. That did the same thing for me too. I just rebooted into recovery and flashed TWRP again and it has been fine since. I think sometimes it switches slots and that causes the bootloop. I messed around with changing slots and I think I am on slot A and all if fine for me.

Hey guys - I'm a pixel noob and have a quick question about TWRP/Magisk.
I was rooted before TWRP came out so I flashed the stock boot images back to slots A and B. Then I followed steps 2-12 of the following article to install both Magisk and TWRP using temp TWRP. https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-3-unlock-bootloader-root-magisk/
My question is... when I was temp booted into TWRP, and installed the Magisk zip file, it only said that it installed to slot A. But when I was rooted before TWRP released I remember I had to flash the patched boot image to both slots. So using the process I followed, do I have one slot rooted and the other not? If so, is that a problem? Phone seems to work perfectly and root is working.
Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've always been a HTC guy but I'm trying

No, only the current slot needs to be rooted.
Hello,
I apparently have one of these Pixel 3's that are not working with the current version of TWRP (twrp-3.2.3-0-blueline.img). Yes, I have a 3, not a 3XL. I have done these a hundred times before so I am fairly confident I am not doing anything wrong either. I get the file to load through ADB but on the reboot, it just hangs on the Google screen forever. I have left it for an hour. I have tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any advice or is in the same situation? I just got my Pixel 3 in the mail on Friday so it's as fresh as they come. I was thinking of fully flashing the TWRP image, but I really don't think it's going to make any difference and I don't want the extra hassle of tracking down the official boot.img from the repo. I guess I will just have to wait until someone who really knows how to debug these comes across one like mine. Clearly, something has changed in what Google is sending out.
For reference:
Android security patch level: September 5,2018
Baseband version: g845-00023-180815-B-4956438

Much appreciated! $50 donation to anyone who can get me past this and rooted. I'm an old-time Verizon unlimited data planner and I need that tether check disabled.

To Pixel 3 owners that succesfully rooted, can you share the build.prop here? /system/build.prop
when i booted in to twrp it was encrypted! but i didnt have a PW.... so for everyone to whom that happens, boot up normally and disable your pin ! then you can see your storage in twrp!

I have a similar problem. After installing twrp, I can boot to the OS, but Magisk isn't installed and I don't have root. After going back to Twrp and flashing the magisk zip, i can't get past the bootloader screen with a error saying something about failed to load boot.img.
Re-fastboot flashing the patched boot img to both slots brings me back to a rooted state with all magisk modules loaded and applied, but no more twrp. I technically don't need twrp for anything except for nandroid backups, but I guess i could just backup using the adb backup commands and get similar results, right?
Either way, I'm open to suggestions for how to get twrp and magisk working at the same time.

[ASK] Rooting Redmi 6a without TWRP / using Magisk Boot Image Patching

I was read https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html. That link describe how to install Magisk in our device in few ways. I was interested "Boot Image Patching" section that tell us about rooting device without TWRP.
Before this, I have 5 redmi devices and 3 of it were rooted-well via TWRP. 1 bricked (totally bricked) and 1 still un-rooted (Redmi 6A-cactus).
My spec of Redmi 6A are:
Security Level Patch: 2019-03-01
MIUI Version: Global Stable 10.2.8.0 (oCBMIXM)
Unlocked: False (i know that i should unlocked it later, i still waiting my 360 hours )
RAM: 2GB
Storage: 16GB
Since i found that link, i still wondering and keep searching about: "is anybody succesfull root their device (especially Redmi 6A with same spec above) with "Boot Image Patching" way?
if any, please let me know. i just want to hear their review and (of course) their experience.
thanks
Yes, i got it working but i still recommend the TWRP method, but if you're still interested, be careful, don't disable the forceencrypt while patching, you can disable dm-verity but DO NOT disable the forceencrypt or you'll lose IMEI/Baseband.
Anyway, this is the patched_boot.img i've used (extracted from the latest V10.2.8.0.OCBMIXM rom).
https://www80.zippyshare.com/v/2zWEXIcM/file.html
Repeating, i still prefer the TWRP method, be careful.

Hi @jonaaa, its me again..
i was success root my 6a with patched_boot.img. but i've got problem when i installing systemless xposed. Xposed Zip successfully installed, but when i tried to install Xposed Manager then reboot, i got stuck in mi logo. i've been trying for 3 times and getting frustrated
now i decided to install twrp and (again) i got stuck in encryption problem. most of google result said that data partition should be formatted and that dont make any sense for me. how could i formatting data partition while that partition is untouchable.
so i wanna ask you: how you get rid from twrp encrypt-decrypt problem?

i dont recommend to use my step, because right now i even dont have twrp in my redmi 6a. In other word, im failed.

Entry Fastboot mode
fastboot devices (to check it's connected well with pc)
fastboot format userdata

fastboot boot twrp-3.3.0.0.img
For a while, i was able to entry twrp without any password asked and installing magisk (magisk-19.0.zip) smoothly.
But, when i rebooting, i've got stuck at mi logo (i've been wait more than 40 minutes and still at mi logo). When i tried to Volume Up + Power, just nothing happened but back to mi logo and stuck again (and more 40 minutes :silly:).
and finally i did install fastboot-rom from scratch...:laugh: and since that, twrp wont installed on my redmi even i flash fastboot-rom again and again. Till now i still wondering why and not found the answer yet.

Uhh... just flash the TWRP and you're done.
The dm-verity removal is necessary if you want to install any GSI.

well i got this issue after flash twrp. after boot and reboot
i got this annyoing android system error, contact manufacturer for detail.
I have a similar problem
I was rooting my redmi 6a and now its bricked
First i intall the twrp, then i flash the Magisk with DisableEncryption, the first boot work fine, i update the magisk app and the new version isnt compatible with the magisk installed
Well i repeat the steps and then i lost the signal, in that moment i didnt know it is the IMEI lost, then i try to install Lineage OS 15.1 GSI for Redmi6a cause i think that is the solution
but the system dont boot, only boot the Xiaomi Tittle with "unlocked" (I unlock the phone before) and then get me to TWRP
Im only one with this problem?
I try use the MiFlashTool for flash the stock rom but not work, now im trying with MiFlashTool flash the MIUI9 and MIUI10.2 and other versions
I think, the problem maybe is the Boot.img
(Sorry for my bad English)
Edit-
I dont have any backup lol

This "contact manufacturer" error happens when you disable dm-verity, you can install Magisk without disabling it.

that just un-official TWRP, right??
i will try that in this weekend. Last time i remember that i can not boot into twrp. Till now, my devices still unrooted. I flash it back to stock ROM. But, when OTA update notification comes and reboot for installing, it give me bootloop into twrp (not to system), and that's mean my TWRP still inside i just cannot boot into.
so, i'll try that TWRP-1020 this weekend. Thanks.
