remix 3.0 Total disappointment - Remix OS for PC

my laptop is an Intel Atom N455 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM and 256MB of video, remix 2.0 was super slow but now the version 3.0 if I worked well super fast and compatible with most applications only that no game opens me none, try to open any game however simple and a black window appears only for 3 seconds and closed.
the file browser does not have option to decompress, he needs a better performance since sometimes the system sticks a bit and antivirus 360 security is not left open in the background: / and also supports launchers, hope to resolve this quickly.

I would say that your expectations are a little exaggerated, you didn't bought your laptop with RemixOS out of the box.So there is no reason to aspect such quick fixes.
I say that remix os 3.0 is not a total disappoitment... actually works very well if it's installed corectlly. Sure it has some bugs/issues in your case video card in my case was wireless card...for me was enough to write 3 words in a sistem file and I fixed that issue.Off course I know it what was wrong with my wireless because I had same problem in other linux distributions...
antivirus 360 security ! jesus! just install a simple firewall and you're good to go! this is not windows )
"file browser does not have option to decompress" who cares?? just install another file manager there are literally hundreds on google play.
Yes it does support other launchers. I'm using ADW Launcher right now.
I recomand you to start searching google about your issue and most important to use the right words to describe you problems. For example, obviosly you have a video issue but you didn't mentioned what type of video card you have....maybe...just maybe someone from this forum can help you to resolve your problem...but only if you want.
Please try again: what video card you have? how you installed remix os? which type of partition you used?have any other info about your problem?
Wellcome to xda forums.

Dude, get your English together - basic bonehead English
I am thinking you are a teenager or perhaps younger from the way you structure your sentences. Secondly, how can you be disappointed when this is a new beta version? Be happy that there are individuals working hard for a free OS which beats the pants out of most OSes. Have you ever tried coding?

Did you consider the op might speak English as a second language or typed it on a small screen or maybe even dyslexic?

Some new Athena user questions

Hey everyone,
I've been using a WM device for 2 years, a good and old KJAM and now the X7500. As you may have seen in my previous post, I'm going to use the X7500 as a UMPC together with my KJAM. I don't plan to ditch the KJAM, as I'm going to keep using it as my PDA and phone. The main purposes of the X7500 would be browsing (WIFI or HSDPA), watching movies, gaming and maybe some document editing.
I have to say, that I got lost trying searching and reading posts around here, and there seem to be a lot of confusion about many things, so I'm gonna ask some questions that I couldn't find one straight updated answer for. I know that these questions have been asked a lot of times, but as I said, there wasn't any clear answer for them (hopefully there is now).
1. I need a good, fast and reliable WM6/WM6.1 ROM. I don't need many features, just simple and as fast as possible. What do u recommend? By the way, if I flash another ROM will it change my device ID? I have bought a program that is registered to that specific device, and by changing the ID that program won't work.
2. BT mouse. how good does it work with the Athena? Will it slow down the system? Will it work with any program (esp. browsers)? How about connecting a USB mouse through the 4-in-1 cable, would it work?
3. Browser. We have a great device, amazing screen but I feel that no browser is good enough for it. I don't want anything fancy, but I want it to be fast and support tabbed browsing. Opera mini is fast enough, but it lacks an option to browse with XX% zoom out permanently like Opera, Netfront or even IE. All of the above are pretty good by the way, but they are simply too slow. Actually, I don't get that. Why are they so slow browsing with WIFI or 3.5G? Opera mini does the job faster, my desktop with the same connection does it faster, what's causing their lag? I found out that browsing through my desktop with LOGMEIN from the X7500 is even faster (but annoying).
Any browser that will hit the spot? Any way to speed things up?
4. Task manager. I want a program that will give me the multi-tasking capability of a desktop PC without slowing down the device. basically I need instant access to all the open programs in the same way the taskbar works on Windows. If the program will give me the option to choose whether to minimize or close a window, it would be better.
5. Printer. Can I plug a USB printer, or can I use only network/BT printers with the device?
6. Any other tips of-course would me most welcomed.
I hope you had the patience to read all of those questions, and maybe even more patience to answer them. Thanks a lot to everyone around here....
best rom? athena project 3. cannot be beaten. ther's a rule on here where theres no posting of roms allowed except project kitchen. This rom is made by people working all day on it, and a new version is released like every 3 months. because thats how long it takes to make it perfect. Im fairly sure the new one is being released this week. but dont quote me on that.
You named all the browsers anyone would suggest, so I cant really recommend anything.
For taskbar id say use wisbar if you need loads of features and skinnable taskbar along with cascading start menu like real windows, or wktask for just sortof tabbed taskbar. wktask is embedded into the rom I mentioned.
hope this helps

First of all, thanks a lot for your comment. I don't really understand what you mean by no ROM postings allowed around here. If I want a lighter ROM than Athena Project, and afraid to cook myself one, I'm out of luck? nobody can even publish their cooked versions of the AP ROMs?
There is no rule like that at all.
If you decide to cook a ROM, feel free to post it. The Athena Project do some great work, but they don't own these public forums.
i dont want to argue about it , but if that's the case, then why is there only one cooked rom avalable? plus check the sticky called proj ct kitchen to see where i got the impression that you cant.

1) I will suggest PK3.0 as the fastest IMHO, we are waiting the new WM6.1 (4.0 release) The .NET re-designed will improve the speed as is happening in many other ROMs. We are waiting also the results of the Athena Team tuning: wait the WM6.1 may be in the next week.
I have increased the speed using MEMMAID, (www.dinarsoft.com) as mantainance and optimizzation tool. The rom's speed depends only from chef choices for the first start but later is related to many other things. Manteinance is the best way to keep it fast
1b) Device ID changed? may be not, we will see...
2) I use a wired optical mouse and it works just as is supposed to do
3) opera 9.5 is fast, the beta is out and it is finger friendly and fast . Netfront 3.5 is fast too, I chose Opera
4) wktask is part of PK rom, you can download it here http://soft.photoracer.net/docs/wktask_en.html and it does exactly what you need
5) Yes, BT or network, having jetcet print
ROM cooking is free and WELCOMED here!

There are a couple of others floating around if you search hard enough.
But the Athena Project roms are so good, everyone seems to use them.
fair enough mate. I have been reading the athena forums for abut 3 months, and never seen any other rom... theres so few posts daily, im sure I would have noticed

This is the 6.1 porting from Kaiser I think.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363542
I think a lot of the browser slowness is down to windows mobile itself. Not sure why. Even the Opera Mini Java midlet is faster on the Symbian OS than on Windows Mobile. Netfront and Opera 9.5 are big improvements on what was available last year though, and Opera will no doubt have a few tweaks before its official release. No Flash or Java add-ons though still
Apparently someone has already managed to play youtube with Opera. Not sure if it is true as he has not responded to request for the cab file yet.

He had posted some screen capture of his earlier success, but found that subsequently it stopped working mysteriously. Anyway, he also said that he is sure when FL3 (instead of Flash player 7) is avaialble this would work.
The trouble is, will adobe release a FL3 for winmo platform...
Edit:
The above works. Make sure you have installed flash player 7 and make the above edit to the ini file.

It's very jerky though. Still better off with the flash plugin. There's an application called EMTube on Symbian devices, would be nice to see it on winmo as it allows access to all the youtube Videos at high quality without loading up the browser at all. There's the Vtap application but that always seemed a bit stodgy to me.
On the subject of Fl3.0 you may have a long wait yet - it's still only been integrated into the N95 8gb, don't know what Adobe are playing at with the rollout for this - it was released as a developers' testing package over five months ago, at this rate someone's going to develop a workaround that screws them over: I HOPE AND PRAY!
That's why there was no excitement in my post. It's not really watchable.
I would still prefer to use PIE with TCPMP to download it first then watch it.
Hello,
I have been using the HTC WM6 ROM HERE and its been great. I wanted a basic ROM with no whistles and bows to get used to the device. Mine had the T-Mobile ROM on, nothing wrong with it but the phone dialer and theme are awful in my view. I tried both opera and net 3.5 and both show great promise, but they aren't ready yet. I ended up just getting one of the IE addon's that hanango do, fine for now. interesting to hear about the things you can use through the USB port. Ive been using the universal and stuff like that doesn't work on it. I think I need to go back and read up more!
Take care

windows 95 on HD2 (for real)

Have you guys tried Windows 95 on HD2? It is a Bochs emulation, I can get it full screen (only VGA though) but can't get the mouse work. Although it is freeware, I saw it on a warez site and I don't know if it is legal or so, hence I'm not posting any links. Just google it if you're interested.
why would you do such a thing?

Why not ?
(curosity killed the cat)
me too
yeah im trying this too, i have to move the bochs windows around the screen, if you go on config, then misc and tick mouse then go on vga keyboard and press f12 and make sure the mouse is ticked it should eventually work, mine did.
anyone who gets it to work please fill us in on the blanks lol love the HD2 and it would be cool to get this bochs working, once we have this working we can simply use the configured settings and make our own win98 image
qemu
You should try Qemu instead, there is a russian port of it for WMobile, i have tested it on the HD2 with windows 95 and works surprisingly good, muuch faster than bochs, only issue is the small keyboard (BSB with pinchzoom helps lots though) and mouse implementation is no good...
I think if this port evolves and matures focused in the multitouch ( a bit like FPSECE is heading with v1.0) it could be one of the nicest surprises on our HD2!
Also played some games, Starcraft being one of them and its quite playable, even the intro and cd sound works (though lags a bit) Its by no means as fast as the pocketstarcraft port, but this is the real thing, all units and bloodwar expansion on it so its quite a nice
Windows itself works pretty fast once the vga drivers and all components are properly installed, there is one issue with the mouse icon, and few other glitches, but still nice and usable.
Im having lots of fun just installing stuff.
If there was any developer over this great forum working on the interface mainly, it would be amazing!
with some free time i will try to post a quick video in youtube if anyone is interested

LOL!! HoMM2 are fully playable on my HD2 using this russian pack. This is superb-completely-amazing!
I see great potential there, sadly looks like this project is not going to be developed further..

Hey that Qemu solution seems a lot better than the Bochs one indeed... got both my Win95 and Win98 images to run, and the mouse is even useable!
I didn't get the keyboard though, there are the couple of keys at the bottom, but is there a way to get a full onscreen keyboard within qemu, or do we have to play with the hardware button to show/hide SIP trick?
guys, this seems interesting.
instead of doing emulation, can we do something like the haret?
boot the phone from storage card and run win xp tablet on it?
what's going on? does it work? will u provide any screenshot?

No, because PC versions of Windows are made to run on PC x86 processors, not on the ARM ones used in mobile devices. So, emulation is necessary.
Some screenshots...
nice, but what actual use is this, better to get ubuntu up and running and we can really have a play then.
None apart from fun... but ubuntu or linux in general wouldn't be any better if it's an x86 build. Emulation just makes everything way too slow for comfortable use.
Windows 95 runs also nice and perfect...
only thing is- i got no mouse xD
touchscreen is not working =/
edit: ah okay im still useing bochs, thats why ...
can anyone upload this files in the forum or on a hoster like rapidshare/uploadet ?
because i dont want in reg. me on this russian forum
yeah i second that but a compiled version!!!!
I created simple compilation with the latest QEMU WM port I could find.
All the credit for this goes to mamaich (excellent work!), I am merely sharing these files.
Links:
[dead]
Instructions:
1. Extract QEMU_WM.7z to the root folder on your SD card.
2. Extract additional packages (Win95 or Homm2) to 'emul' directory in QEMU folder.
3. Use qemu_launcher from QEMU folder to start selected VM.
Note: QEMU must be placed in '\Storage Card\QEMU\' directory, otherwise you have to edit 'cmdline.txt' etc files accordingly.
Generally, everything works well and pretty fast (as for emulation). Homm2 is completely playable (with sound!). On Win95 mouse cursor is a bit dodgy - it looks like button clicks are not detected correctly.
Please note that this software (Homm2, Win95) although very old, is still copyrighted, so don't download it if you haven't got license for it. If these links violate forum rules, please remove them.
Hi just a few quick questions:
Does the internet work on windows 95, e.g. can i go on internet explorer and actually go on websites?
Is it possible to run windows 98 on HTC HD2?
I've seen youtube videos with a HTC HD2 running windows xp, vista or 7 on them through remote desktop, is this possible or just a fake?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiDZ_wBAtM
Can you please post some screens of your HTC HD2 running windows 95 with internet explorer on the screen, thanks alot!

Well as you said it's through remote desktop. So it's not fake, but the HD2 is not "running" them either, just displaying on its screen what another computer is running, and interacting with it.

They are, but it needs playing with one of the bottom buttons. See attached picture, the button pointed by the arrow is the key. When it's grey (default), a tap on the screen will do a left click. So a tap&drag will do a left click and drag, i.e selection, moving stuff, etc, which is why it looks weird to you. Tap the button, it turns to black, and now a tap&drag on the screen moves the cursor without clicking, like a laptop touchpad. The button on the left marked "rb" does the same as grey but with right mouse button.
So you need to turn the thing black, move the cursor where you want, tap it to grey, tap or double tap to single/double click, tap it to black, move to some other place, etc, toggling the button each time between movements and clicks. Not very convenient, but works.
I'd gladly try the net etc, but I just tested on my Win98 image, and it has IE and all network drivers stripped out, so no way. Plus, I still haven't found how to get an onscreen keyboard. And W98 is very slow.
Will have a look under W95 tomorrow, it seems that one was complete.

A weekend using remix 3.0.102

Hi all users remix I will present to you today as I was using for two days in his last remix version on my laptop with the following characteristics:
TOSHIBA NB250-108
Intel® Atom ™ N455 processor
ddr3 ram 2gb
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (256mb)
open gl 2.0
I say this after beginning...
I use windows 7 without any problem from there 3.0.102 remix install the hard disk on another partition, was fast, start well, I gave me choose my WiFi connection but not detect anything even though it was activated.
okay
no problem, sure to restart may recognize my wifi and so was ... well it works well, not as fast as its main competitor, phoenix you, but not as fluid goes well, native apps are good, your file manager does not have option to extract compressed files, but only touches download an app for that ... ok let's start with the good things about this version:
It works faster than version 2.0 ...
store and play alternative app store
It is rooted
all applications work smoothly
detects all partitions
we now for the things that must be corrected:
problems with the WiFi that spend an hour or a little more begins to fail, disconnect and try to connect again and does not, after several attempts just says error wifi connection and no problem with my wifi in my phone does not happen and is the same wifi I have in my house.
the file browser is missing extract compressed files.
many crashes, when using the system and do many things like download any app, play games, listen to music or do something in Word hangs and returns to CRGAR the system.
also freezes playing restart the computer.
when the computer is asleep after resume does not react more, it turns but is completely frozen.
besides that he needs more fluidity.
mapping the full screen key does not fit well because of the lower task bar.
but that is only corrected manually adjusting the size of the games.
You can not be installed launchers and assume that android is customizable.
change those icons so ugly: P
some games run smoothly but many do not work.
examples:
baseball superstar 2013
Zenonia 5
ZENONIA S
candy crush and all games dl same developer
battle camp
demon souls ... the list is longer but are just a few examples.
I hope to do more compatible with those games.
jetpack joyride also runs slow and that in phoennix will operate normally.
I do this because I work with system installation and I would like to install this system to my clients and do not have many problems and they can do their jobs, watch videos, play and do everything smoothly.
so users expand this excellent system. jide thank for this, I hope I read and take into account.
and the laptop that I use is very, very common where I live.
Why I'm getting stuck on setup wizard in RemixOS 3.0 ??
Sent from my ONE E1003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I also installed the new marshmallow update on my 2015 Dell Xps 13 with the touch screen. Wifi is non existent. The system looks promising, but without wifi I'm not going to even give it a try.
You know...I am getting tired of this stupid linux/open source/remixos driver situation. I mean...it's 2016. Are we still having trouble with a god damn wifi? The wifi dongle is such a ubiquitous tool. We have wifi everywhere - but no, we don't have drivers for them. Seriously? Do we even *need* drivers for such a simple device? And then graphics. Of course, graphics. NVidia launches the Pascal architecture, AMD launches the 400 series - but wait, we are on linux or a futile linux hack called remixos. We don't get access to all that. We need opensource drivers.
What in the name of sweet baby jezus is all this crap? We have PCs for over 60 years folks. 60 god damn years. And we still lack basic boilerplate drivers like graphics and wifi? See? This is exactly why I don't bother with hacks like remix os or linux. Yes, I am including linux here because no hardware vendor supports it properly. Hell, I could extend this to the whole open source ecosystem. I don't use that. I don't want that. I want supported devices.
I am tired of browsing forums to help me get my god damn wifi or printer working. It's been 60 years of personal computing folks, we deserve better. That's exactly why I am ranting and will always rant about this. And for sure I will get a chromebox when android play store comes to chrome os and will say goodbye to PCs forever. Remix OS for PC - what a god damn joke. If it's for PCs, make it actually run on PCs.

Remix os, on asus zenbook

Hello! I must say im impressed so far, i see the potensial in this os. However theres some inconveniences im bothered about.
1. There is no keyboard light
2. fn functions like screen brightness dont work
3. Mediakeys (start, pause , next previous) on my logitech mouse dont work (obviously because lack of logitech drivers)
4. Some internet pages shows as on mobile phone (very big fonts and pictures), even if iv i set to desktop mode. (in both opera and chrome browser)
5. A integrated file-explorer with SMB nas support would be nice.
Is there some way to get these functions up and running? Asus UX32L
Thanks, have a nice day. :good:
I have exactly same feelings about Remix OS. It is a really promising operating system, however still being incomplete.
The most frustrating issues is the lack of keyboard backlight. I chose my laptop with a backlit keyboard for a big reason, that is using it conveniently also in dark, and now when I'm used to this feature I can't imagine living without it.
Does anybody know any hack to make the keyboard backlight work? Remix OS (Android) is Linux based and what I remember in all the latest Linux desktop releases the keyboard backlight works from the box, so there must be support for it in the kernel.
I can also confirm the lack of function key support, I can't change the brightness, or volume, etc.
And yes, it would be really essential to have SMB share support in file explorer. Phoenix OS also has a perfectly working SMB client in their built-in file mananger.
Also, I have found that not all Android apps work in Remix OS, but in Phoenix OS they do. These not working apps install just fine from Play Store, but when opening them I see a window rapidly opening and closing immediately without enough time to see what is there. No any error messages remain.
ASUS Zenbook UX302LA

What Android version do you recommend for me?

After looking at the Index thread, it seems as if Lollipop 5.1 is the latest version of Android that is safe for an HP Touchpad. Am I understanding this correctly?
Also, if I install that one, does it wipe out WebOS? I guess it doesn't matter if so because from what I'm reading, it's completely outdated and no longer supported. Also, I'm locked out and cannot remember the passcode anyway.
No version of Android is supported on the TouchPad, therefore there isn't a 'safe' version. You'd have most success updating to current (7.1.2+) firmwares. As a TouchPad modder, these versions are the fastest and most supported by Play Store. The initial process of installing 'moboot' for the first time can be daunting, so look into using which ever version of Android is used in jcullins' Toolbox tutorial. Once moboot and TWRP are installed, you can pretty much try whichever rom you want, as this device is near impossible to brick.
Good luck!

Try the below link which points to the updated guide on how to install Android on the HP Touchpad.
If you are a newbie on this stuff, you would be a good test on how well this guide is written and if it needs any tweaks to help people follow it with accuracy.
I mean I tested it myself, but I am a "seasoned veteran" LOL, I installed KitKat from this guide and also Nougat the version that was recommend to you. Its all there.

1) So I got it to install (Evervolv Nougat) and my feedback on the tutorial is that it's a bit of information overload. Not sure how easy it would be to simply it though.
2) I could not find a link for Boost (what is that?) or the Keyboard fix. Can you assist (assuming they can be installed retroactively)? The keyboard, for instance, works in Chrome but does not appear on the home screen when tapping the Google Search Bar.
3) And maybe this should be #1...but this Nougat seems to slow things down considerably. I tried installing the game Run Race 3D for instance and it was unplayable. Would an older Android version speed things up or am I just dealing with old hardware that can't keep up?

Hello AshleyQ,
Well along with the step by step, I added a bit of instruction. For example you said, "I could not find a link for Boost (what is that?) or the Keyboard fix." So I will add a little more "overload" of instruction for what Boost Optimized settings are, in my OP at a later date.
But as per your performance. The reason its slow is because you did not load the following ZIP's in the exact sequence the instructions say. I realize its because you could not find the links for boost and keyboard. If you go to HP_TOUCHPAD's "Master List of ZIPs" in the OP of the guide, or I put it below for convenience, you will see the green list below for Nougat 7.1.2, and find the links you were missing earlier.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hp-touchpad/general/hp-touchpad-optimize-android-swap-t3901773
and once you click link, hit "page down" 3 times and it will get you to the "Master List of Zips"
Evervolv 7.1.2 Android Nougat
1.Click Here to Download the ROM
2.Click Here to Download the Boost Optimized settings with preset CPU Frequency
3.Click here to download Google Open Apps
Select Platform ARM, Android 7.1 and the Variant you want, Pico is recommended
4.Click Here to Download the Keyboard Fix
As per the Boost Settings always start with 1728, and after that is working good, you can try to flash a higher frequency for speed, and you don't have to re-flash everything just the Boost Zip ( like 1782, or 1836 ) file from TWRP recovery. If it freezes screen just go back and flash lower frequency.
So click each link in the OP, and download the said 4 ZIP files, and follow the Original Post again, with these 4 ZIP's ready to go!!! Do not do this retroactively, but start again from scratch.
And you will be able to play the "Run Race 3D" game!!
Look at this link below, a non-gamer like user HP_TOUCHPAD from Florida, played the game Hearthstone!!! I believe you will be able to play "Run Race 3D", but we would love to hear how your results go, and we will be here to help you get a smooth running touchpad that is 100% Android, with SWAP!!!

AshleyQ the OP'er wants to play Run Race 3D game. Now I am not a gamer at all, but you tried with Hearthstone so I will try now, when I download Run Race 3D game I get the attached errors. But I can run YouTube fine, everything seems fine until I run that game ( Run Race 3D ). What are these errors telling you? I waited till SWAP was over 400 Mb, and I used various boost files, first 1782, 1836 and 1728, but with no luck.
I should point out that I had about 10 minutes where I was running the game with smoothness and doing the jumps and winning the races, but then HP Touchpad started to get sluggish with little mini freezes and it threw my timing of the jumps off and I started to lose, then the error came.
Evervolv 7.1.2 Android Nougat
1.Click Here to Download the ROM
2.Click Here to Download the Boost Optimized settings with preset CPU Frequency
3.Click here to download Google Open Apps
Select Platform ARM, Android 7.1 and the Variant you want, Pico is recommended
4.Click Here to Download the Keyboard Fix
p.s. the 2nd pic is kind of hard to read, I just wanted to show that I ran "running services" and it shows 558 MB of SWAP.

In the Developers options --.>> Running Services shows Device Memory been use but does not show the swap.
The FREE in gray color shows the available free RAM, but is not the size of the swap file, for example the system can report 485 MB Free RAM and only use 60 MB of swap.
The best way to see how much swap is been use is by connecting the Tablet to PC using usb, open a terminal window and using adb shell then type
free -h

Keep in mind that the free version of this game have Ads, that is a service that is running in the background and when is time to display the ads is another process getting activated. Android is constantly launching background process it does not seem to care if the device is been use, it will take priority.

The reason that I mentioned to wait until it shows 400 MB of free RAM (is not swap) is that Android finishes launching all process and the system is finally "IDLE", it takes that long for Android to finally settle and the Tablet ready to be use..
I just installed the Game, it only took about 73 MB of swap space, but I am testing on DU 9 using completely different settings. I am not a gamer, but it looks very simple, graphics are minimal, it does shows a lot of ads and even launching the Play store to install more games. The issues that I am having is that there is no minimal specification for any App, it only shows the Android version and it will depend on the Device. It will help if an App shows the minimal RAM requirement to run, then the settings can be apply to provide that amount, but is all about guessing. I am not done testing my next settings, I will use this game as a tester.
I applied some settings and tried the game and I won! is very easy to play on the Tablet with a bigger screen but it could be a real challenge on smartphone.
Attached is the screenshot of my victory.
Is work in progress, but the game should play with no issues once I finish the settings.
So what do you guys recommend that I do? I just used Run Race 3d as an example of the sluggishness and really just want an Android version and setup that will give me the best overall (meaning fastest) performance...with games/browsing/etc.

Congratulations on the RR3D win! I won a few times myself and the man did a little dance on the screen, but then my HPTP got sluggish and I kept crashing into the walls because when I pressed the screen the man would not jump like I told it too. In fact my setup got to the point I could not even take a screenshot it was too sluggish.
But if @ashleyquicik is reading this, please be patient it seems like HP_TOUCHPAD is working on some Universal performance settings that will work for all ROMs, past present and future. In the meantime you could load JC Sullins KitKat 4.4 ROM you will find that link in the 2nd Master List of zips ( RolandD's ) on below install method. I find for YouTube and Podcast apps this current version of Nougat is fine, but once I start playing "Run Race 3D" it gets sluggish. Be sure to follow directions in flashing the ZIP's in order.
HP_TOUCHPAD is now using the Run Race 3D game as a testing app, so you can be sure sooner or later this game will be working, not to win at the game, but to win and beat the sluggishness!!
This is the classic case of MAN vs. MACHINE!!!

After the first stage of the game was over and I selected to play again, then what seems to be an Advertisement came up, but it was only a black screen, then the image show trying to trick me on touching to install another game, there was no way of getting out of it, then the Play store got launch by itself and then I had to close both. There is a difference when you the user open many apps and place them on the background and when two apps are running at same time, is too much to ask for a 1GB RAM device.

I will provide the settings but I do not want to send the wrong signal as it will allow for any apps, specially games to play. Android's apps are extremely buggy even on the stock devices, just search for an issue and you will find how many users are experiencing the problem and none are related to the HP TP, just regular devices.
HP_TOUCHPAD is now using the Run Race 3D game as a testing app, so you can be sure sooner or later this game will be working, not to win at the game, but to win and beat the sluggishness!!
As you have tested yourself the game will play, you won. It is a very basic game with low graphics., but it provides HUGE Ads and also any other apps that you have installed on the Tablet will impact performance. The sluggishness comes as background services that becomes active, that is why as soon as you connect the Tablet to WiFi, it will slow down, just check Running Services and you see them all, opening and closing plus the google apps updates, it will happen even if the CPU is at full capacity and low ram available, is the way Android works.
This is the classic case of MAN vs. MACHINE!!!
I will call it MAN vs Google!
Here is the explanation for that, I will try to keep it short.

Android Apps are written in Java, Google does not want to pay license feeds as is offering the OS for free and making revenue on the data it collect from the devices for Ads placement, each device is a Digital Billboard that Google charge for displaying time to companies promoting their services or products.
If you have experience running a Virtual Machine on the Desktop, then it should be easy to understand the concept. Android apps are running inside an open source virtual machine " Dalvik" to run the java code and be display on the screen. To virtualize an OS on the desktop if the PC has 6 GB of RAM, and the guess OS requires a minimum of 4 GB to run, then it must be configure and there will only be 2GB left on the Host OS. Then the speed will degrade for low RAM resources and the HOST can not be use for nothing else. Once the Guess OS has done its job, it can be close down and the Host OS will function normally. But if the correct amount of RAM is not allocated to the Guess it will not boot, or shutdown. That is the same that happen in HP TP with Android, and those settings are apply manually in the build.prop by the manufacture. Everything in Android must be configure manually as the OS is too basic and primitive all settings are device specific according to screen resolution, size and amount of RAM ( Memory ).
Hopefully I explained it or compare it, easy to understand.

So having said that...and to sort of reiterate some of what I wrote in my last post, what is arguably the best ROM/procedure to have the best overall performance?

It all depends of the intended use from the user.
Does it needs to have a working:
Bluetooth ?
Reliable WiFi ?
Camera ?
Android compatibility with a special App ?
Android Versions are different and that sets the ROM apart, it will not be comparing Apples to Apples from different versions.
If you check my guide I have optimized 7.1.2, 8.1 and 9 to use swap and all those three versions works very similar.
One of the reason that I will be doing an Universal Setting and retro-fit older ROM, is to show that the Tablet will work similar with different ROMs.
I should probably make a version that is completely optimized only for games, that will required to delete unnecessary Android system process and RAM could be about 600 MB Free.
Does it needs to have a working:
Bluetooth ? Yes
Reliable WiFi ? YES
Camera ? Yes
Games really aren't necessary because I'm giving this tablet to someone that won't be gaming.

I started reading your thread from the beginning as I though that it was all about the 3d racer game.
You have a Tablet that would like to give to someone that has WebOS installed and also another Android version on it, which is 7.1.2 and you found it to be slow.
My recommendations for a newest ROM is the same as everyone on here recommended Evervolv 7.1.2 Android Nougat. You could use older ROMs but some basic apps may not work.
Previously @DoubleStuff provided the information on how to installed Evervolv 7.1.2 and also provided the link to my guide that with instructions.
If you flashed the Automatic_Wipe_All, then the Tablet is 100 % Android with swap and WebOS is gone, which will provide more storage space on the Tablet.
As per my guide the proper way to flash all the zip files provided is as follow:
Evervolv 7.1.2 Android Nougat
1.Click Here to Download the ROM
2.Click Here to Download the Boost Optimized settings with preset CPU Frequency
3.Click here to download Google Open Apps
Select Platform ARM, Android 7.1 and the Variant you want, Pico is recommended
4.Click Here to Download the Keyboard Fix
The Boost optimized settings link (2) will give you the option to download 5 different CPU frequency, start with 1728 after you set up the tablet then try a higher speed, the fastest is 1836, if the Tablet boot into Android after flashing 1836 and use some apps and does not freeze then keep using it, if it reboots or freeze then flash 1782 if still not stable keep flashing lower frequencies.
To have a properly working camera, install this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera&hl=en_US
If you have any issues just ask.

Well as I talked about in another thread where HP_TOUCHPAD wants to start retrofitting old ROM's with SWAP and Universal boost settings, there is a ROM that most agree is the "greatest ROM of all time", but its an old version of Android called KitKat 4.4.4 by JC Sullins and you can find the link here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712680
Now one version later Lollipop 5.1 ( or 12.1 CM ) this same developer JC Sullins created a Lollipop ROM, that HP_TOUCHPAD is working on retrofitting: As @HP_TOUCHPAD said in a previous thread about this retrofit.
"...I Applied all optimization to CM 12.1, but testing. The only problem that I am experiencing is if I open about 8 to 9 apps and then press the square, next to home, it will reboot. I do not know if is the ROM or my settings.
But overall works great with swap. Will be posting new optimized settings, soon...." -HP_TOUCHPAD
And if I am not mistaken he may have finished it, but its not posted yet in his MASTER ZIP's list
What I recommend you do AshelyQ because its so easy and quick to install ROMs with our install methods, I would install KitKat above and test it for a day or two, then install another one maybe 7.1.2 and again test it, and maybe even another. And then you can pick the one you think meets you or your friends needs the best and stick with that ROM.
I am going to install HP_TOUCHPAD's retrofitted Lollipop ROM ( when HP_TOUCHPAD posts the settings ) and try to run "Run Race 3D" on it....I will report back with my findings.

Well I have not tested JC Sullins Lollipop ROM with Universal settings yet, but I just installed JC Sullins 4.4 without swap or any special settings, just the ROM and the GApps, and I am happy to report the "Run Race 3d" game went well, I made it to the BONUS Level and earned 146 coins with lots pomp and circumstance, and was getting adds everytime I completed a race, but I waited 5 seconds then pressed the "X" and things went well. So now I am very curious how these old "great" Android versions will work with HP TOUCHPAD'S Universal settings.
3 days ago I was not a gamer, but I guess I am now!!! LOL The HP Touchpad even had enough memory to take a screen shot.
