How to remove a single account - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I make the mistake of purchasing Android-Sync to sync data between Outlook and my phone. Avoid this app - besides have some functional issue, customer service is completely non-existent. One of the key problems is that they create an account on the device and use it for sync'ing - kinda like LinkedIn. One of the key problems is that by using this approach, you cannot edit contact, e.g., you cannot set a custom ringtone for a specific user.
Making matters worse, I just discovered another problem: When I tried to delete that account, I was greeted with the pleasant: This account is required by some applications. You can only remove it by resetting the phone to factory defaults (which deletes all your personal data.
Based on some reading, one approach for dealing with this (my phone is rooted) is to delete the file data/ system/accounts.db. While I understand how this works, this is a rather drastic approach as it also deletes the ten or so accounts that I do want to keep.
Is there a tool or approach for simply deleting one account from accounts.db?
Thank you

Changing Original GMAIL Setting

When I bought my HTC Thunderbolt I logged into an existing gmail account that I thought I could change down the line. So, I have found that changing my original gmail account is not as easy as I thought. The problem is that when I go to put in a new event into my calender it does not sync correctly because it is syncing with the first gmail account I put on the phone.
So, before I go erasing this or that file, I want to check with some people who have good wisdom. My phone is rooted, I am on a different ROM and Radio, but everything I read says that you need to do a factory reset. So, here are a few questions I have...
Will a factory reset effect the rooting of my phone?
If it does not, should I just back on my apps up and do a factory reset?
Is there anything else I should know before I attempt a factory reset?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gmail is directly linked to the primary account on your phone. the one you went through the initial setup with(setup market with). and unfortunately you cannot remove that email from gmail.
you can ofcourse add accounts via "accounts & sync", but that's a different story.
christ eh?... tell him/her I said salam.
I don't have any issues with erasing or not erasing the email. In fact, I don't really care if it stays on there or not. When I put a new event into my calendar it is using the email I signed up with. So yes, I could sync multiple accounts, but my laptop, tablet, home computure, work computer are all on one account. I like it this way.
When I look in my "accounts and sync" it says that it is using the proper account, but when I select a event in the calendar it wants to sync with google email I sign up with on my phone. I don't want it to use this account. I want to use the same one my google mail.
I am thinking that if I back up all my apps and data using Titanium Backup, do a factory reset, then add my google email so that my calendar syncs with the proper email I should be set. I can always bring my apps back using Titanium Backup and if all fails the worst that could happen is that I go back to my original setting using Titanium Backup.
Am I wrong in thinking this way?

So, the gmail account you started your phone with... 1. Did you purchase apps on the market with it? And 2. Do you still want to use it at all on your phone? If you answered "no" to both these questions, do this:
On your computer, log in to the gmail acct you don't want. Export a back up of all your contacts. Now, log out and log into the gmail acct you 'do' want and import your contacts into it. It will not wipe any existing contacts.
Now. On your phone, delete the Google acct you don't want. Sync the one you do want (calendar, contacts, etc). You will have sync'ed all your contacts, email, and calendar. Make sure its all there.
If you answered "yes" to either question above, also do this... Once you're sure your phone has integrated your new main acct, add the old one back. Uncheck the boxes for synching contacts and calendar plus anything else you don't want to sync.

Oops... It is important to know, 4g phones are not linked to your Verizon service the same way 3g/non-sim card phones are. In fact, if you were to reset your phone and not sign into a Google acct at all, you would still have service after set up is complete. This is because your service is now linked to the sim card on your phone. Granted, you won't have contacts, but you could make a call or browse the internet...

Android Phone safety against theft/snatch/loss

Hello,
I am sure there are numerous applications for GPS tracking and remote controlling/wiping all the data and settings pattern/numeric access codes for your mobiles.
Problem is that executing these safety measures are somehow dependent on certain other factors and can have successful or unsuccessful consequences.
I am thinking of anything more basic and hassle free way of ensuring that even in worst condition I can have certain peace of mind that my critical gmail account data would not be accessed for unauthorized use. For example when it was unlocked for use and meanwhile it was lost or snatched how can I be sure that my google account information specifically gmail/maps are safe. I know I can change the password by reaching to a nearby PC, but that is not always a possibility.
I have got my Samsung Galaxy S2 for more than a month and just figuring out a safe way before putting it in active use.
An idea which I am thinking of is to have another Gmail account specifically for use with Android Phone, and import/export the actual "Contacts" only to this new email account. Since contacts are the most frequently used item, they would be in sync with the new email account, any delta changes would have to be replicated to your original gmail account as well.
I dont use Picasa, so it is of no importance to me to sync the pictures with picasa account.
For access to my actual gmail and other emails (like work email) I can use an add on email android applications like K9-Mail to configure the gmail as IMAP. To get access to this email program I can install any application which can password protect the access to applications and can reactivate the password after any time of inactivity. I dont know whether in such case would I get popup in the notification bar for new emails or not.
The only two most used applications now left are
- Maps and Latitude
- Google Plus
Now both of them need to be used with my actual gmail account, since all contacts and connection are related to my actual identity on google.
So i need to know that is it possible to use one gmail (fake/secondary) account on android phone just for syncing contacts and use another actual (primary/original) account for logging in the official google maps and google plus applications. I know even in this case the password needs to be changed in case of a mishap, however I can be a bit satisfied that all critical data in the email storage is safe.
I just need your opinions and suggestion on the mentioned procedure, or is there any other good and recommended practice for getting multiple accounts configured on Android Phone and selectively use the google accounts for different applications.
Thanks for your inputs.
Hmm...seems like everyone is so sure of the safety of their handset, no one even gives a s*** to think about the worst-case scenario of losing a device.
Cheers...hope everyone retains the droid for life..

[Q] How do I enable/restore calender again when disabling it deleted it?

I seem to have deleted my Google calender (or some part of it) from my android (specs below). I can’t seem to be able to restore it.
I had problems syncing a new calender and was trying to clear all cache etc in order to get it to sync. I went into Settings --> applications --> All --> ‘Calendar’ (I’ve always had two of those, so I took the one with data in it, the other always stands on 0.0B).
I cleared the data, force stopped it and then I pushed Disable. The button went from disable to enable and I restarted my phone thinking I could enable it after restart. After reboot the calendar had disappeared. Meaning: no icon in the ‘applications’ screen, when I go into the settings menu I only have one post named ‘calendar’ (the empty one). Calendar Storage still has content though and when I use widgets they seem to be able to access and sync to my main Google calender. When I use ‘month’ view I can see the different events I have in my calendar but I can’t edit anything from my phone. As soon as I try to actually access it I get the message ‘Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped’.
How do I restore, or enable the Calender again? I find it really disturbing that I don’t have a calender icon in ‘application’ anymore and that it seems to have completely disappeared.
I’ve tried clearing data, experimenting with the sync option and rebooting several times. I just can’t seem to get any results though. And I can't find it on play so I can't re-install it. Any insight on this?

First check via Google mail/calendar if u see ur appointments...
If u don't see it there, they wasn't saved it Google account and so just local, which u delete (no restore)
If u see them there, just delete and reactivate ur Google account on ur phone.
CHEERS ;-)

Might have worked had it been a sync problem only (my calendar is intact on the web). This however is a problem of the built-in calendar app disappearing. I removed the account and installed it again but the calendar did not appear.
I'm starting to think that factory reset is the only viable option.

Hmm but that's a bit much for just probs like this...
Hmm u checked the options in application > all > calendar and delete data again?
Then also checked if calendar sync is active (I think so but just an idea)
So last option before factory reset would be wiping the dalvik cache
If at all now luck... U can do it.
But would be really strange.
Much success ;-)

Lost Calendar Events
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have a similar issue/problem
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

Restore a recent backup, that way the period of events lost will be minimal; only events entered/altered after the time of the backup, obviously (and you can then sync to Google if you like to bring that back up to date).
So far as recovering your lost events goes, I doubt Google will restore an individuals calendar events. Tho you might as well ask them, they might surprise you. That way you then simply restore them to your phone.
Failing that, unless you've got a copy of the db file containing the calendar events still on the phone, can't see how you'd get them back unfortunately.
As to why, I'd be asking Google. I've been keeping my phone/Google calendar synced a couple of times a day over the year and a bit I've had my SGS2 & never had a problem from their end (a couple very early doors caused by me when I had to reset my phone & I hadn't synced to Google before doing the reset).
Thanks Mistah. Unfortunately I didnt make any backups with TiBu or a nandroid at that time.
I've asked google and you are correct, they dont do event restores.
Yes definitely my main concern is why it happened at all? So it never happened to you?....hmmm..
im wondering if it was something on Google's part or something I did.
Before I realized my calendar disappeared, I unsynched and erased the profile on my device so it only had the local calendar, then i synced again.
I wonder if my erasing that profile on my samsung caused the calendar to delete. Or maybe it didn't register or save?
I can't 100% recall if I saved the events on google's calendar or my local. but if I stored on my local, shouldnt the data still be there even after my sync and unsync or google calendar?

Yep. If you remove the Google a/c from your phone completely, it deletes the events attached to that Google a/c in the calendar app. When you add it back, you'll have an empty calendar until you sync it from Google.
So essentially, what's seemed to have happened is you've done that with the a/c on your phone, for whatever reason your events @ Google's end have been nuked, so when you've re-added the a/c back on your phone & gone to sync it, there's been nothing there to sync back to the phone.
If you untick 'show [email protected]' in the calendar app settings (as opposed to removing the a/c outright), exit the app & restart the app you end up with an empty calendar, because it must have a Google a/c linked. If you retick 'show [email protected]' your events show again because simply unticking it doesn't delete anything.
Removing the a/c outright from the phone must purge the DB file(s) (?? I presume) on the phone.
That's the most logical explanation I can come up with given what happened/the order it happened in with your phone.

I just tried it again. I removed the account from my phone. then resynced it. All the info from the calendar is still there.
Currently i store everything locally and only view local calendar (as you've said, untick google calendar).
Also not sure if this matters, I'm not using google calendars, I'm using samsung's stock calendar planner.
I cant see how removing the account from ur handheld would erase all events from your calendar. Isn't removing the account just deciding not to sync with it?

That's why I added (?? I presume) to that line in my PP about removing the account potentially wiping the DB files.
I doubt you'll end up finding out what happened/why it happened.
Anyhow, that's all I can offer.

ya, it was worth a shot to test out that theory.
back to square one i guess.
google is blaming on samsung's app causing the erase when syncing.

Gmail Issue

For starters, this is a stock maxx device, had it since the release.
I go to Ashland University in Ashland Ohio and we use @ashland.edu gmail accounts. Our 'oh so wonderful' IT department has deemed that incoming freshmen are too stupid to remember multiple passwords for various logins across campus so they set up this "Active Directory" system in which you create a master password and its changes all passwords across all logins. So I changed my password today using the AD system...
..only to find it also affected my gmail. Now, I am unable to sync my emails to my phone through the gmail app. I cannot download anything in the marketplace, and I get an annoying popup about google talk failing to authenticate.
I've read that you should get a popup that allows you to change the password on your device via the market or the gmail app.. I've had neither. Unfortunately this is my primary account as well so I can't just delete it and re add it.
Does anyone have any work around so I don't have to wipe my phone? I'd really hate to lose everything that I can't backup via my SD card and all of my custom made widgets and what not. I figured it might have to do with the fact my gmail was an @ashland.edu instead of a @gmail.com
Thanks.

Contacts problem

Since the last system update a couple of days ago, my Contacts are no longer displaying.
I have 250 contacts in one account (call it A) and 10 in a second account (call it B).
Until the update, there was a setting in Contacts that allowed me to select which account to use and I used account A.
After the update, it shows the contacts in account B, and I can not find any way of choosing account A.
Account A is still shown as usual in the list in Accounts. I have no reason to believe the records in this account have been deleted, and if they were I should still have been able to select that Account.
I'm going to download a different Contacts app and see if that sees then, but does anyone else recognise this problem? Any ideas?
Try clearing the system cache.
Clear app cache.
Unistall/reinstall the app.
Thanks for suggestions! I'm just diving into food but will follow up later and report back.
I've cleared the Contacts cache, and found the right account in Contacts. It says there are no contacts in that account!
But I downloaded another Contacts app from Google Play and it shows all the contacts present and correct. I could use this instead and phone people from it...
But when I use the Phone app, it has a link to the original Contacts app and I can't replace this with a link to the new app. So when I receive a call, the Phone app can't show me the caller's name.
Does that make sense?
I've had trouble with contacts on my 10+.
Never saw this happen before.
Huge whole blocks of contacts disappearing. I can't recall the exact fix.
I may have deleted sim toolkit data to force repopulation... whatever I did it was fast but not fun
No data was loss.
Always have multiple backup copies on hdds
I'm using the native app "Phone" which I think is an open source app that Samsung uses.
I've been using this setup since the phone was new. Never had a moment's trouble. I had changed nothing. It only failed with the latest system update.
I've now got it back.
I removed that account completely. Reinstalled it and imported the data. Still no contacts.
Removed the account again. Created a new account with a different name. Imported data. All contacts now visible.
As they say, Go figure!
