You have to wipe system, data, internal storage, cache, dalvik cache and preload. If the size is 1gb that doesn't mean it's only going to take 1gb after you have flashed it.
I have the same issue..

Thanks for the help....
Just got a new Thunderbolt. Rooted. When I wipe Dalvik cache I get a line that says E: invalid directory or file. Is there something I need to do to my internal storage or sdcard first before downloading a new rom, wiping data cache dalvik and then flashing? Recovery doesn't seem to be wiping dalvik cache. Any help is apreciated. Thanks.
Hey! Let me tell you something.

Did you delete the cache partition first? I believe the dalvik cache is often stored there, so if you wipe the partition first, you'll get an error if you attempt to wipe the cache afterwards. Either way, if it isn't there, it shouldn't cause a problem with a new ROM.
I found a file named cache, it had 2 files. One was called download.apk, the other was Recovery.txt. The Recovery.txt file was just a log of my last flash. The download.apk would not open. It was 1kb. In the data dir. there is a David cache file. It has all the data from the user apps. I deleted the cache file but still got the error, then deleted both, and still the same. After reboot, both files were there with the same info. Should I re-root, format sdcard with a ext-3 partition then update to a GB Rom? Thanks
Hey, the Ol' Lady stole my T-bolt
It always says that, for me at least. You have to do two clicks in Recovery for it to work, if you know what I mean. After I click "Clear Dalvik Cache" the first time, I get that "error" and a list of more options, one being Wipe Dalvik Cache, and the other 13 being the same. I click Wipe Dalvik Cache, and the feed at the bottom says Dalvik Cache cleared.
That is when.it looks for a EXT partition. If one was not create it will say that.
It is typically used for Apps2SD and by having them on the SD there would be a dalvik directory.

i have read that wiping dalvik cache will clear some of your internal memory so my question is can i wipe dalvik cache via cwm or need wipe only when u flash roms?
Yes, you can use this option in cwm (you can find it in advanced). Only what must you remember, when you do wipe dalvik cache the phone will first run need more time to boot.

If ur hungry for more internal memory, install a2sd script, install a2sdgui & move dalvik cache to sd card. U wil get around 150 mb free internal memory.

Do moving dalvik cache on external sd card safe?
If the dalvik cache is on external sd card, do phone will run as usual when sd card is unmounted?

If you move the dalvik cache to the sdcard and unmount and boot, then the dalvik cache will rebuild in the phone memory when you boot, so boot time will be longer(the first time)

If it will create another dalvik cache, what will happen to dalvik on the sd?
What happen to the phone if sd card unexpectedly unmount?
Guys, when flashing a new rom, some requires format system. Will this format your phone memory storage and delete everything?

flashing new rom requires only to wipe data/factory not format system
if u format system it will delete every thing on phone memory including the rom installed earlier

I have this doubt for long time? wiping internal storage ie 2.2 GB in moto e ( total 4 GB ) cause any problem when installing custom ROM?
when I reset last time I found nearly 200mb space went missing out of 2.2 GB, that's why I am asking?
Do not wipe internal storage unless you have a complete ROM ready with you in your internal or external memory for you to flash. Wiping internal storage wipes the entire 4GB emmc which means you are wiping off all partitions including bootloader. If you accidentally reboot after wiping internal storage, your phone will never switch on. So be careful, only wipe system, cache, data and dalvik, nothing else.
ok i accidentally wiped off my internal storage as well. now i am not able to install roms .. what to do?

No worries mate. Just copy your ROM into a external MC, insert it and boot your device into recovery and install the room

I wipe everything except External Memory card to install ROMs, and I delete all those left over folders in external via PC.

Did you tried wiping everything again? Maybe problem with the download?
Btw MD5 not found isn't anything to worry about. Its just a hash check and can be skipped.
I recommend trying a different ROM like AICP.
installed successfully !! there was an error in downloaded zip re-downloading the file fixed the issue.. !

I wiped system, cache, dalvik, boot and recovery before installing a new custom rom. What are chances that a malicious code still run on the device? Thanks

Have you mounted every partition you've seen in mount menu of twrp and wiped them? Also there are other memory spaces, but I guess they are not used by malware (no guarantee).
There's also data partition, I wiped that. EFS I don't think there's an option to wipe it. USB otg is unmounted.

Yeah, data partition should be wiped too(wipes your data, be careful!). And internal storage too!
It doesn't answer my question

It's easy: wipe/format every single partition = no code will be survive
