Need Root - Stock Kyocera, NOT BRICKED, no bootloader/recovery mode? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a brand new Boost Mobile, Kyocera Hydro Reach, which seems to be a nice little device for the price that would benefit greatly from root access/roms. I attempted to root it via the usual one click methods, with no luck. Kingo crashed the phone, Kingroot failed at like 80%, others didn't work as well. I figured since I wanted to get a little deeper into android development, now would be a good time to start. I was looking into maybe dumping the stock images and building a recovery and such. I tried to boot into recovery (button method) to see what the stock recovery was like, but it booted straight into the OS. Same for download mode. The only alternate mode I successfully booted into was safe mode. I tried to boot into both with ADB as well, but only got the OS again. I'm not sure if the BL is locked or not, and was going to unlock it (there's an option in dev options to allow BL unlocking) with ADB, but it just boots android so I'm not sure.
As stated in the title, this is, afaik, 100% stock, brand new in the packaging. The only time it's been used was during activation. I have QPST which I'm in the process of learning, and the phone has a snapdragon 210 I believe, so it should work. I was thinking maybe I could use it to flash custom images.
Any ideas? I have been rooted on every device since about 2011 or so, and not having my usual apps and such available is annoying me to no end, especially on a device that really needs it. With no stock images, how to I go about developing for this device?

[Q] Stuck In Recovery Mode

Hi Guys,
I am getting kind of desperate. I keep rebooting into recovery mode. Then, the screen shows Fastboot mode started... udc_start (). I think it is stuck. I am using LG Optimus ONE (P500). I have tried battery pull a lot of times. Doesn't work. Any suggestions? If you suggest I reflash stock rom or something, tell me how please. Thanks.

for flashing original firmwares
If you choose to reflash stock ROM, here is what you need:
- tools: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875881
- ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944881 or the link suggested in the tools thread
You may wait a little bit longer before reflashing to see if anybody has a better solution to your problem. Good luck!
More Questions... Help please if you can... Thanks
Hi All,
Thanks to those who have responded so far. I kind of needed the phone fixed ASAP, so I sent it for repair. But anyway, I have a few questions:
1)Is it possible to reflash stock ROM or a new ROM even if the the computer or Android SDK can't detect your device? (This is with the correct driver installed. When my phone was in the fastboot mode screen, it couldn't be detected as an LG Device at all when plugged in.) If you can, how?
2)For those who have successfully gotten a new ROM onto their Optimus One, how did you do it? Is there anywhere where the procedure can be found? And is it relatively safe? (I know there is always a chance you might brick your phone unless you are some expert, but there are some procedures that are safer than others right?)
3)This last question isn't really relevant to this forum section, but I'll ask anyway. Which phone models (any brand, preferably 2.2 onwards) are good for rooting and installing custom ROMs? Like, are there any phones that most rooting/ROM installing software supports? (For instance, I have heard that HTC phones can usually be flashed with custom ROMs without bricking that easily 'cos they are supported by stuff like ROM Manager etc.) And one more thing: what are the easiest/safest ways found to root/flash a new ROM?
Thanks everyone.

Yes it is possible, you'll need to firstly boot into 'emergency mode', by pressing volume up + back + power when the phone is off. Then follow these steps to flash stock rom. You do not use Android SDK at all, all you need is for the phone to get into the emergency mode, it is what most people with bricked phones do to reflash.

Personally, it was relatively easy for me even though I'm a new user to android. I've had my phone for 2 weeks and bricked it 3 times within the first 72 hours. But there are methods to get it back as I explained in Q1 XD In order to flash a new ROM, there are 3 MAIN steps.
1. root your phone
2. install custom recovery
3. make backup and flash new ROM
if you need help on certain individual steps, just post it here and I'm sure someone will help you.

In terms of the easiest method to root, it is definitely to simply run an app that can automatically root the phone for you, such as z4root, or SuperOneClick are just 2 examples. So I'll say whichever phones these app support, will be the easiest to root. ROMs will depend on the users of those phones and their dedication to creating customisable ROM. You can find most of the phones and available ROMs on this forum anyway.
Is it possible to exit emergency mode? Do you do a battery pull or something? I am planning to test out booting into emergency mode when my phone comes back from repair. Will it harm my phone? (Does it do stuff like wiping system data or my installed apps?) Thanks in advance to anyone who will reply.
I think you can just hold power to turn your phone off in emergency mode, but if it doesn't work, you can always pull the battery out. You didn't mention what you did for this problem to start but unless you perform the same thing, you won't need to use emergency mode.

when you said install a new rom, did you install it through kdz? if you did, try installing an optimus s rom through recovery. heres how:
download a rom on your computer
plug your phone in to you computer (with it already booted in recovery)
toggle usbms on your phone
transfer the rom to your phone
flash the rom

Soft bricked(i think)g3, no download mode - phone still active_help get back to stock

I have a Sprint LG G3 LS990 that I have been having major trouble with as far as getting a custom recovery. Reason being is the Auto Rec wouldnt work for me because of my version of SuperSU. Flashify wouldnt work, even if I could find the correct file becuae it says to be careful when you are using lollipop AND/OR MAKE SURE BOOTOADER IS UNLCKED BEFORE FLASHING. I thought I had found a solution, but that solution did this to my phone. I basically tried to use BUMP to get TWRP, and based on what I read, I am SOFTBRICKED to a certain extent? My phone still works and everything, still root access, but I do not have any type of recovery or download mode to use any of these solutions that I keep finding. When I try to go into Download mode, or Boot into Recovery, it just goes to FASTBOOT. I cannot find our exactly what to do from here. I am rather a NOOB, but can take and retain direction and information well. I have been looking for a FASTBOOT SOLUTION for literally like TWO DAYS now and cannot seem to find one. If anyone could please help and tell me where to go from here. Anything that would get me to where I can factory reset my phone and reroot it. That is really the goal. The ultimate goal is reroot, custom recovery and BLISSPOP ROM and then I will be fine. I need information on totally RESETTING PHONE/(RESTORING RECOVERY?) from fastboot mode, or justs doing the whole process. Resetting phone so everything is how it should be STOCK WISE, so I can proceed to re root it. Thank you in advance for even reading this.
Have you tried flashing a recovery from within android? Like flash the latest twrp.

Can't get into recovery after installing TWRP (after having been rooted before)

I'm using a Sony Xperia Z2 tablet - SGP511 (castor_windy). It's been rooted before, bootloader unlocked and had a couple of custom ROMs at various times. I've had issues because apps like root checker say it's not rooted properly and I am not getting the full benefit of a rooted tablet.
I have recently reset it to factory and the original OS seems to have come back. I'm now trying to start again with a new ROM but can't get into recovery mode.
I've flashed TWRP recovery BUT - I can't get into recovery mode to ensure root has happened properly. I've tried getting to recovery via adb and via the hard buttons on the tablet, but the tablet either resets and loads up again or I get a triple vibrate and the LED flashes different colours.
So - i'd love to know any thoughts anyone might have? I think there's something glitchy way down underneath what I can see. I'm not amazing at this stuff - really just read a lot of forums.
I'm hoping to have TWRP working and then to root using SuperSU to ensure that the tablet is rooted properly, THEN to flash Paranoid Android.
I really really hope someone can give me a hand!

MSMDownloadTool Custom ROM

Hello,
I was installing different custom ROMS for this phone, then reverted back to Stock ROM. It updated itself, and IMEI got erased somehow.
Is there any way possible to flash a custom ROM, or even custom recovery using MSMDownloadTool? I had a global version N10, so it was sim unlocked and bootloader unlockable, and I do actually have my IMEI on the back of my box, but can't put it into my phone as I have to root it. But I can't root it because the bootloader is now locked, and the bootloader is now locked because there is no IMEI......
This leaves me locked out of fastboot, so the only option is edl, which works just fine. However, only MSMDownloadTool is compatible with this mode, and it only installs Stock ROMs.
I tried extracting the .OPS files, replacing the stock recovery with twrp (and then renaming it to recovery.img), repacking the .ops then installing it. It installs, but then never boots and is just stuck in edl mode until I reflash the normal stock rom with the stock recovery.
What Do I do?
Thanks

If your bootloader was relocked, encryption and partition checking were enabled again.
TWRP would only cause your phone to register as modified and lock itself...and due to streamlining of a lot of functions, you can't even use the dialer to enter the menu needed.
Best you can do is totally wipe everything on your phone and generate a new android ID. (You have to do this from the actual OS instead of recovery though. Recovery format uses predetermined instructions. The format option from the android settings panel has a different set of instructions and one of them is to generate a new android ID, which includes IMEI)
Thanks for the reply, although im kinda confused by your answer. How do I generate a new android ID? (what does that even mean lol). I checked in my settings and I can't find any "format option"

Android ID is what determines your phone is the phone it claims to be when pinging google services.
Move any files you want to keep to somewhere safe. Format your phone, android will push you a new id number. It won't fix your IMEI, but it'll keep your phone from being absolutely useless in the process.
After your phone is formated and has booted back into the OS, you can enable adb. Adb into fastboot, use fastboot to determine if your device is still bootloader unlocked using the fastboot oem device-info command

I tried everything you said, reset everything, still no IMEI, and even if the Android ID is different it hasn't really changed anything. Just to be clear, when I flashed the stock ROM earlier, everything worked as intended apart from the SIM card (which doesnt work at all) and the WiFi (which keeps dropping after 5 seconds of connection). Those problems persist even now.
Guess I'll be messing around with the SMT mode in MSMDownloadTool since I've already lost my IMEI, see what I can do from that. If there's anything I do actually end up finding out, I'll post it on xda.
Update
I installed an update by download a zip, installed update via settings. System rebooted to complete update, and somehow the oem unlock option opened!!
From this point, fixing it will be pretty straight forward I think
Thanks for your help

Nice! If everything is working properly besides the IMEI at this point, there's a couple of PC applications you can use.
I'd recommend write dual imei, not gonna post a link since IMEI fudging is against the rules (even if you're just trying to repair your IMEI)
Use the IMEI that's on your device sticker or on your phone packaging specifically.
Either way, hoping you get your phone back up to 100%.
As it turns out, it's not easy at all. My WiFi has exactly the same issue... keeps dropping, No SIM card, no baseband version. What's crazy is that I have rooted, and even repaired the IMEI via a tool. If I read the IMEI via the tool (and different ones just to be sure), they will all show the IMEI the same as the one that I wrote (which were the original ones).
But for some reason the phone still doesnt recognize it. I reboot it. Same story. The tool recognizes, the phone doesn't. I know for a fact that the issue cannot be hardware, at least for WiFi. If it was, it wouldn't connect to any network, but it does, and then disconnects after a few seconds. I think I have been all over every post on the internet regarding this issue, but still no luck.
Honestly, check with OnePlus if you're under the 1 year warranty window. This sounds like an issue that can really only be fixed with a replacement device.

Hi I have a similar problem.. My phone oneplus 8t is stuck in 'SMT Download failed error' mode. I was tryimg out custom roms which has caused this. My phone says can only be fixed via SMT Download mode. Can you help me out using the SMT download mode? I have tried MSM Tool normally to unbrick my phone but it doesn't work.
hello @nightfury04
If you have a Oneplus 8T you have to download the appropriate MSMDownloadTool (specifically for it) and make sure the version is correct too. Is your phone global/ locked to a carrier?

Question Rooting the phone

Im interested in picking this phone up but my main holdback is whether or not you can root it. Ive been living that root based adblock life and I cant go back. Non-root based adblocks just dont work as well as the rooted ones.
Has anyone rooted the phone? does magisk + adb flash work? Has anyone rooted CN phone with global rom?
You should be able to but I would be cautious.
Firstly, the service for unlocking the bootloader seems unreliable from some reports (apparently you need to use some Chinese portal for requesting an unlock file - if you don't have luck getting that or it doesn't work, you're stuck and I bet getting help from Lenovo is not easy). Secondly, unless I've missed something, I don't see proper official ROM image downloads from Lenovo for extracting/patching boot or safely reflashing the device from bootloop/soft brick, so you have to go with whatever is available around for download here or elsewhere on the net and hope for the best. Even more important since you don't have custom recovery options (like TWRP) on this device.
In summary, yes, but it looks like risky business. This device doesn't seem to be root friendly...
