Hi guys. I'm totally new to the android/smart phone world btw. Anyways, I recently got my Samsung Galaxy S2... first thing I noticed, my touch screen wasn't working. I popped the battery in and out and then it started working as it should.
My phone was working fine this morning, then all of a sudden out of no where, the touch screen stopped working again. I've tried turning on/off the phone multiple times. I've taken out the battery and even my SIM card nothing... i'm worried.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix? Do i have to go through Samsung? I hope not. Incase anyone asks, I did not root my phone.
Any help/feedback would be appreciated.
When the touchscreen stops working... were you charging the phone at that time?
The first time i turned on my phone, was actually by accident and it was charging.
However, just earlier now, it was not. it was just sitting on my computer desk. The home button, lock button and touch capacitive buttons work.... but i can't get past the lock screen
you could try a factory reset to see if its software related, but it sounds like hardware. I would definitely Return the phone .
I guess I can't do a factory reset, since I can't get into any of the menus... man this sucks. I spent $900 *gulp*
To do a factory reset,
1. Turn the POWER OFF, pull the battery out and put it back again.
2. Simultaneously press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power button
3. If the Samsung Symbol appears, release the Power button
4. A Boot Menu will then show, Use the volume up/down to choose wipe data/factory reset.

oo that's interesting... I tried it. and it didn't get to a boot menu. maybe I was doing it wrong. I tried a few different ways, but no success. It turns out I have warranty with the store. They're going to replace it for me Thanks for the feedback guys. Awesome forums.
Something similar happened to me yesterday. When I had the in-box USB cable attached to a BoxWave VersaCharger (combined AC/DC charger), and the VersaCharger was plugged into 120V AC, the touchscreen would stop working. As soon as I unplugged the USB cable from the SGS2, or plugged the VersaCharger into a 12V DC lighter socket, the touchscreen would work fine.
I've got the same problem as the OP... I had my phone charging overnight and this morning when I first went to use the phone I could not unlock the screen. I could wake the screen via the home button, and see I had a missed call etc but it just wasn't responding to touch. BTW I can't remember if when I first tried to unlock the phone if it was charging or not but really this shouldn't matter.... oh and btw, I'm not rooted or anything either! Naturally I rebooted the phone but still the same problem....so I tried a battery pull and still the same problem. Just now I did a factory reset but the touch screen still isn't working! I guess this is a hardware problem so I'm going to get it fixed under warranty by Samsung! Gutted that I will likely be without my phone for a week or 2!
EDIT, UPDATE...
Well, I was just on my way to the repair shop Samsung warranty had told me to take it too, and I took my sim card out to put in my old Hero (the only thing I hadn't tried!) and I couldn't believe it but the touch screen started working fine again! Weird, but that is now my advice if anyone else has a problem with their touch screen not working - oh and I took the sim out whilst the phone was still turned on. Crisis averted!
UPDATE 2
Sadly this has happened about 4 times to me now and I'm just waiting for the inevitable next time. Each time doing a factory reset then taking the sim card out seems to bring the screen back to life (though last time not immediately) but I shouldn't have to put up with this. Problem is, I don't want to send off a seemingly perfectly working phone to get repaired as I fear they will struggle to notice the problem, never mind fix it! I'm hoping a new firmware comes out soon, in the hope that it may resolve my issues...

I have had this happen to me twice now (Touchscreen not responding).
The first time I had just installed a game and thought it must have been related to that. Pulled the battery and no joy, left it for a while and it came back to life...
Second time I was surfing the web and it stopped responding, pulled the battery and left it for maybe a minute but no joy .... pulled the battery again and left it for probably 20min and it came back to life. When it came back up I noticed the livewallpaper had been turned off and my widgets were gone from the homescreen.
What I did notice when it wasn't working was it had "safe mode" displayed at the bottom left of the screen

Have the same problem i Mine and was super exicedat first it worked fine and after charging the touchscreen stopped working i pulled the battery out and put it back in but no luckso im gonna return mine to the shop hope they replace it

As of this morning, I have exactly the same issue as the OP. Screen doesn't react to touch, with the exception of the capacitive buttons. I found a dude on YouTube that had the same issue: youtu.be/0oIdllWiV4I
The last thing I did with the phone before it started misbehaving was to answer a call. The phone was on the charger when the call came in - I can't recall whether I unplugged it before answering, or after, or at all during the call. Not sure it has any relevance anyway, only mention it because I've seen reports of people's screens no longer reacting to touch when the phone is plugged in to a charger (apparently it even states in the manual that this may happen).
Anyway, whilst all my contacts, SMS, photos etc are backed up to the cloud, the same can't be said for my app data. Before I lose hours and hours of progress in various games, or all my settings in numerous other apps, etc, can anyone think of any way to get access to the memory of the phone, bearing in mind the following:
I can't connect to Kies to pull a back-up because bluetooth is currently enabled on the phone and when one connects the USB cable, it says "Activating USB mode will deactivate Bluetooth. Continue?" but I can't click the Yes button
I can't connect in USB mass storage mode because I can't navigate to the settings menu entry to enable it
I can't turn Bluetooth off in order to get Kies working, becuase I can't get to the settings menu or pull down the notification bar to reach the power control.
I can't use Voice input to control the device (on the off chance there was a "bluetooth off" voice command) because (presumably with the most recent firmware I flashed via Kies a few weeks back) for some reason Vlingo is no longer the app on the double-home button action. Instead it calls Samsung Voice and wants to walk me through a first use tutorial, but I can't click the next/skip buttons
I installed via Android Market push the app belonging to www_remoteaccessphone_com as it promises to be able to remotely switch bluetooth off, but the website says I haven't installed the app yet, presumably because alrhough I was able to install it without touching the phone, it probably needs to be run at least once to set it up, and I obviously can't do that

flash it with CF-root, boot into CWM recovery, do a nandroid backup after that, use CWM recovery again to mount USB storage, connect to your PC and pull everything off.

Thanks for the quick advice. I guess I'll need to use my girlfriend's phone to download CF-root and then transfer the SD card to my device. Quick question before I proceed though - is it possible to remove all traces of such tampering, since I've already made out with Samsung that I'm sending it in for repair, and I'm not sure they will honour the warranty if they see it has been rooted etc.

get a USB jig off ebay or amazon to reset the flash counter. should not cost more than 5 or 6 euros, shipped.
anyways you need to flash CF-root through ODIN if you are coming from stock. instructions are all in chainfire's cf-root thread.
Nandroid Restore
So I successfully rooted, used CWM to do a Nandroid backup, mounted the sd_card and saved the contents (including the nandroid backup) to my PC, reflashed the stock rom & kernel, usb-jigged it to get the counter back to zero/original and sent the phone in for repair. My efforts paid off as they repaired it without question under warranty. I just received the phone back and today set about restoring my backup:
Copied the sd_card contents I'd saved to my HDD back onto the phone
Re-roooted it with Cf-mod.
Used CWM to restore the backup I took before sending it in
It restored boot/system/data/cache successfully
selected reboot now in CWM
The result is that it is still missing all my apps. It only seems to have the "data" like my camera shots and SMS messages, system settings like whether bluetooth is on or off, the volume level, Wifi networks etc. So something was restored. But there is no Google Account configured, the lock screen picture is the default not the one I had beforehand, and as I said, all the apps - the main reason I did this whole thing as my personal data is all backed up to the cloud on a regular basis anyway - have not been restored. Am I confused? I thought a nandroid backup took a complete snapshot of everything, apps included.
Finding out the list of Apps I had in order to reinstall them is not an issue - I have a list of everything I had installed saved on AppBrain. But if I reinstall the apps, all the settings (or progress in the games) within those freshly installed apps will be back to square one, not where I left them, right? Or should I reinstall the apps and then restore the data partition over the top again?
Are you guys using any type of screen protectors, cause if you are, that may be the issue s their have been reports that the screen becomes unresponsive with certain screen protectors when connected to a charger.
However, if you are not using a screen protector, then I would suggest getting the unit replaced as you should not have to do anything, root or otherwise, to get the touchscreen working on a touchscreen phone

Nope, no screen protector or any kind of case for that matter. Anyway, that isn't my issue anymore. The touch-sensitive unit was defective, the phone was repaired under warranty. My issue now is getting my apps & settings back. I have meanwhile read elsewhere that Nandroid doesn't back up the apps - pretty deceptive "backs up everything!" "it is like time travel" etc comments around here then.
Anyway, I reinstalled all the apps I had previously, and thought by reapplying the data partition from the nandroid backup it might then bring back the settings for the reinstalled apps. Instead all it did was remove all those apps again - now I am really confused. How come the restore DOESN'T bring back the apps I used to have, but DOES remove the ones I subsequently install. Does Nandroid touch the apps or doesn't it?
Touch screen not working
So i am having a very peculiar problem related to the GT-I9100 Touch Screen.
I bought the phone from Saudi Arabia and I live in Bangladesh at the moment. So for now I don't have warranty.
I bought it on 4th of this month. It had 2.3.3. So I updated it to 2.3.5. I did not use the phone much before that so I don't know if this problem was there before.
So here is the problem.
First time I noticed it when i pulled the phone from my pocket and could not unlock the pattern. First I thought I forgot the pattern. After sometime I noticed that i could not touch the buttons. I was dragging my finger over the points but there was no connecting line. I restarted the set. But it still did not work. After sometime I took the battery out. And after that it started normally and unlocked. And the touchscreen is totally fine.
I tested it using *#0*#. And every single point in the screen registers touch.
After that this happened couple of times. First couple of days I thought it was a pattern unlock problem. But i tried PIN and Password even using no unlock. It happened in every case.
So after couple of days it totally stopped happening.
But from yesterday it is happening again. And today it happened 3 times.
So today as I had no unlock protocol i tried tapping Home twice. As this brings on the voice command menu. And for the first time i was in the phone without touching the screen.And first i noticed the Menu and Back Soft keys works.And the touchscreen still does not work. And i noticed some thing weird. Always some thing in the screen is Selected. In Menu the + Icon is selected. In first screen the Map icon is selected. Also in Recent Apps the first App is selected. So after a lot of reboots it is back to normal again. Now i see something interesting. In the Battery Usage Graph i can see some really sharp drops. 3 times. Looks like when this happens phones charge takes a nose dive.
So here is the Gist.
Info related the Problem:
1. Usually happens when the phone is my pant pocket for sometime. It does not happen if it is sitting on the table.
2. Touchscreen gets totally disabled.
3. I have no idea why this happens.The exact reason behind it.
4. Battery Charge takes a nose dive when this happens. See the attached images.
5. I still don't know how to bring it back. Sometimes a simple reboot works. Sometimes I have to pull the battery. And sometimes it works on its own.
6. Every other function of the phone works. Like music playback using my UE 200vi music keys using PowerAMP, Siri(Android version), Call can be received using headset.

So this is the thing. My biggest problem right now is, I don't know why it happens and I don't know how to bring it back from this situation. If I knew I could make sure I don't get it again or I would just fix it every-time. As when this happens I cant make calls or anything which requires the touchscreen.
So guys help me if you can by giving ideas. As i will not go back to KSA in 6 months. So buying a $550 phone unlocked was a total waste. As i cant use it here.

Hi mates,
since this evening, my Galaxy S2 (unbranded, unrooted, with stock firmware) was connecting fine with my PC in the "kies mode". I could use kies flawlessy, and I could regularly see my phone in my windows 7 (x86) explorer, and use explorer to read and write files from and to its memory.
Then, this evening, I got a notification, from kies, that an update (of kies) was available (2.0.2.11071.182.2), and I gave my consent to the updater. It did all its dirty job but after the installation of the new version, despite the phone connects via USB, every time I try to access the phone's memory from the PC, the connection drops. It restores backafer one second or two, but then again, if I try to access the phone's memory, it drops agains. The problem appears indifferently when accessing phone's memory from kies, and when doing it from windows' explorer, and this makes me suspect of the drivers, that the new version of kies brought along.
The phone connects correctly to the PC in the direct USB mode, and I can access its memory with no problem, and this also suggests that the problem should be the drivers.
So I uninstalled everything (new kies and drivers), and rebooted the PC, then I dowloaded what I believe is the previous version of kies: 2.0.1.11053.99.3, and launched its installation. After the end of the process, I rebooted the PC, just to be safe. According to the list of the installed software in my PC (in "Control Panel > Uninstall a program"), the drivers have rolled back, as expected, to version 1.3.2410.0 (before they were 1.4.something).
At the first connection of the phone to the PC after the reboot, I got notification from windows that the device installed correctly and it is ready to use (all the tree drivers are indeed reported as installed correctly)...
The point is that all this did not solve the problem at all, and USB connection still behaves exactly as badly as before.
I tried again uninstalling and reinstalling everything, also adding a manual clean up of the windows' registry from any entry related to "samsung", checking that the phone was not set in "USB debugging" mode, and disabling the antivirus, but despite everything appears to be fine, the phone regularly keeps on refusing to maintain USB connection alive everytime I try to access its memory.
What drives me mad is the fact that until this evening, everything was working flawlessly!
What else can I try????
I've just made a test on another PC running windows XP, with latest Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 installed. It's my office PC, and although I'm not 100% sure, I seem to remember that, until yesterday, my phone was connecting fine with it, and with that version of kies. But now, all of a sudden, I have the same problem also with this PC...
So, likely, it is a problem of the phone... the MTP application restarts everytime I try to access the phone from the PC, so... what can I try on the phone, to see if I can fix this annoying issue? I DON'T WANT TO FACTORY RESET MY PHONE, PLEASE!!!!
If any of you has any suggestion, I would be more than grateful...

I had the same problem the other day and I could not find a way to fix it, in the end I did a factory reset from Settings/Privacy and its ok now, just wiping cache did not fix it, factory reset was needed.

So... it appears that there's nothing else to do, is there? Buhahhaa!!! I want to cry!!!! I haven't made a backup and resetting the phone will be really painful... I'm already starting to feel the pain in my ass!!!
By chance, do you happen to know if I will have to buy again the apps I have already bought from the market? I have always kept both "Backup personal data" and "Automatic restore" ticked in "Settings>Privacy"... Could this be of any help?

You can always make a backup now before the reset and you will not have to buy paid apps again.

Oh wait a moment, Perhaps I could use Kies air? Deos it allow to backup the phone? 'cause I can't test it now in my office, there's no wifi here...
From what I can tell, its the amount of the power that is supplied to the USB port itself that is the issue. I have the same problem when I put my i9100 on certain computers. Same thing happens to my WD MyPassport. Certain computers it works fine, and some it will power it for a bit, but once the device starts to draw too much current, it just disconnects.
This is why I try to do all my modding and flashing on a laptop, since, for me, they seem to be the most reliable in keeping devices powered up properly.
This is certainly a good point, but in my particular case, USB connection used to work up until yesterday with all the PCs I have (2 laptops and a desktop PC), whereas since yesterday, it works with none (with and without using the same USB ports). In addition if I use straight USB connection (hence not through the MTP app used by kies), it works fine.
Anyway what you have just mentioned is actually what scares me, because it would mean a hardware fault. But I'm crossing my fingers, hopefully it's (just) a software related issue and a factory reset will solve it. After all, straight connection works, so it would be really surprising if it were a hardware fault.
I will try resetting everything when I get home. Another "nice" busy evening to account to Samsung!
I guess if all samsung customers were honestly paid for every hour spent mending/fixing the issues of samsung products, the company would declare bankrupt in a matter of a few days!

I spent 8 hours backing up and restoring everything included all the settings and personalisations. I went to bed at 3 am, eating only a quick sandwich in front of the bloody phone.

I hate when something in a device screws up all of a sudden and noboby knows why. It could happen again any time, and again I would have to spend hours mending a stupid phone instead of enjoying my life.
By the way, does anybody knows exactly what data is automatically backed up and restored on google servers by these functions?

I always had both tiched, and I noticed that almost all the applications downloaded from the market that were installed on the phone, were automatically re-downloaded and restored on the phone at first boot after reset, but I'm not too shure I have understood what else was automatically restored.
I just read this thread for the first time, and was sympathetic to your issue when I started reading. I could see that there had been problems, but suggestions had been made and you seemed to be making good progress.
I was getting ready for offering advice and wishing you well with your problem.
Then suddenly you start to wish physical harm on Samsung employees.

This is a simple solution try it and it will work for you the next time you face it most of the time it is a hardware issue i have been facing the same issue and nothing helped neither the factory reset nor the *#7284# procedure.
Take a pointy object like a pin or a paper and then clean your usb slot of the phone properly cuz most of the times usb pin points gets connected with each other due to the atmosphere and metal reaction. After that it will work like a charm for you. Before commenting anything negative i would appreciate if those who are facing this issue for a long time try this and then comment
Had the same problem, solved it by upgrading the phone software.
Setting > About Phone > Software update.
No need to afraid losing files. Hope that helps.
i faced the same problem on the GalaxyS sometime back. i did factory reset too. I got the same problem again. but i remembered it working on my LG TV so i did not go for factory reset. I went for re-install of samsung's USB driver for Windows. now it is working fine.
I fully agree that Samsung needs to be more responsible and responsive in resolving the such problems without causing data losses.

You could have saved a lot of hassle by installing a custom Rom and Kernel. I hate MTP mode! Mass storage mode is much better, I never had any problems with that....
Workaround - Power Management
This may be fixed, for now. However, in the future, there is a small workaround that you can use so that you're not required to wipe your phone every time this happens.
Here's what I do:
Since the device's connection is severed after the use of a certain amount of power, we can control the power management of the port that the device is connected to.
On WinXP:
Enter "Control Panel" > "System"
Click on "Hardware"
Click on "Device Manager"
Find the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section
Click the "+" next to that, and find the "USB Root Hub" that the device is connected to.
Right-click on the Hub, then select "Properties"
Click on the "Power Management" tab
Then, UNcheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
This will prevent the connection from resetting. It's a quick workaround that works pretty well for me.
However, I ought to note that the changes should be undone after you're done with syncing the device, ESPECIALLY if you're on a laptop. Otherwise, you could risk a lot of battery/power usage within a short time, even if there is no device connected to that port.

Please don't bail out because of that comment, i have been having this issue for a month and AT&T almost sold me another phone telling me it was the USB PORT.
I changed my phone setup dialing *#7284# and changed the UART to : PDA from Modem and same for USB (to PDA) modes. This helped get connected as before it would not even recognize the phone (computer would not do so).
I was am not sure if it is not the battery or charging circuitry, as others also reported, but my charging circuit is working fine and my battery charges 100% and last all day as normal. I can connect to the USB port and see my phone for a short while but it will suddenly disconnect.
But same as before it suddenly disconnects and will reconnect cycling continuously. I also believe it is the charge circuit because when it is charging, i hear the phone constanlty beeping from turning the schreen on/off. Same as when it is plugged into the usb port on computer.
Am tempted to buy a battery, but is can run the phone on the USB port without a battery in the phone. Problem continues without a battery...disconnecting and connecting to the computer.

Here's what I do:
Since the device's connection is severed after the use of a certain amount of power, we can control the power management of the port that the device is connected to.
On WinXP:
Enter "Control Panel" > "System"
Click on "Hardware"
Click on "Device Manager"
Find the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section
Click the "+" next to that, and find the "USB Root Hub" that the device is connected to.
Right-click on the Hub, then select "Properties"
Click on the "Power Management" tab
Then, UNcheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
This will prevent the connection from resetting. It's a quick workaround that works pretty well for me.
However, I ought to note that the changes should be undone after you're done with syncing the device, ESPECIALLY if you're on a laptop. Otherwise, you could risk a lot of battery/power usage within a short time, even if there is no device connected to that port.

I was plagued with this same problem, until I tried the above fix, and it works brilliantly! No more disconnects, great stuff.
It's pretty old topic but maybe someone has same issue and doesn't want to loose data. I had similar problem (couldn't connect to device, also couldn't install/uninstall any stuff because of no-space-available error).
I managed to download all pictures/documents via adb - worked pretty well. A sample command to retrieve all camera pictures:
adb pull /mnt/sdcard/DCIM
Greetings reader. I'm new to the forum but have been viewing threads every now and then, so after having read plenty of times that people should search before posting. I have searched and didn't find what I was looking for, so that's why you can read this now ;p.
4 days ago when I was trying to browse the web in college I wasn't able to connect to the wifi network or even open the wifi settings, so I reset my phone only to find the problem persisting. As if something locked me out of the wifi settings.
I'm perfectly able to access any of the other settings, so I think it's kinda weird.
Shortly after I realised I couldn't get to the wifi anymore my phone started to reboot itself automatically. Ever since that first reboot it just keeps rebooting at the same pace over and over again until I either power it off or until the battery dies.
The phone also get's unusually hot now. Not like, super hot, but definitely hotter than any other time I can remember.
I also get error messages since the problems started saying: 'Process system is not responding'. I then get the option to either force close it or wait. Neither seem to do much if anything at all other than taking away the error message. Sounds kinda critical if you'd ask me.
But so after all these symptoms started to appear I figured I'd just do a factory reset and be done with it, but every time I go into the factory reset settings, I put in my lock screen pattern and then at the last step (pressing the Erase all data button) it just does nothing.
I can touch the button and it does give the animation that it is being pressed, but it just doesn't do anything.
The phone doesn't freeze though, I can still navigate after pressing the button only to see it reboot again shortly after.
After that I tried to flash the rom, but for some reason my PC refuses to show my phone's internal memory in my pcor any sign of my phone's connection at all.
I haven't tried it on any other pc yet, so it might just be my pc, though I doubt it is since it was perfectly able to recognize it shortly before all this started.
The device hasn't endured any shocks lately or expsure to water or whatever, so I think that's ruled out as well.
I am running the stock rom, 2.3 Gingerbread I believe, and the warranty is already way over date (I think. I'll have to check that).
Any suggestions as on how to determine what could be causing this, or how to fix it? Because I really don't want to buy a new phone xD.

Well, I wrote a very thorough post explaining my situation, and when I tried to post it I was informed I was trying to register for my forum account instead. *facepalm* So with that thirty minutes wasted, let's try this again.
I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7. Software 4.5.2. I rooted it with an exploit, deleted some Metrics system files, and then after rebooting came up to a broken "desktop." The main Favorites window flashes from white to gray at me, there are no icons in it. I can't run any apps. I can get to the Settings menu, enable ADB, MTP, etc., but I can't turn on Wi-Fi or do updates. I did a Factory Reset, but that just erased all my content. If I reboot from this situation, I get stuck at the orange animated logo screen forever. If I hold the Volume + button and choose Factory Default from there, I can get back to the flashing Favorites desktop window, but still can't do anything just as before.
I have installed the Android SDK for Windows, installed the adb_usb.ini files, and the device is not recognized by Windows at all. It charges, but that's it. I tried using Ubuntu and SoupKit. They also don't see the Kindle as being there. No matter how many times I reboot the Kindle, all the SoupKit commands just hang at "Waiting for Device".
I made a Factory Cable. When I plug it in, the Kindle doesn't turn on. Holding down the power button does nothing. If I plug back in a regular USB, it turns right on. If I plug the Factory Cable in at the Flashing favorites screen, I hear the "plugged in" chime and the charging icon appears on the battery, but nothing else happens. If I try to reboot from there, with the Factory Cable still in, it shuts down but won't restart. I am open to the possibility I messed up the cable, but continuity seems good with my meter from both ends of the cable and from the solder joints to the micro-USB end, etc.
Has anyone seen the flashing desktop behavior? What should I be doing to try to get my Kindle recognized, so I can push the stock firmware back to it to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I made a foolish mistake and I can't seem to correct it myself, so I'm hoping someone else out there has the answer I'm overlooking. Thank you for your time.
Make sure you have the Kindle Fire ADB drivers installed.

I had already installed the Google USB driver using the SDK Manager, and also modified adb_usb.ini and so forth, to no effect. I tried the instructions at the above link, though, since that Add-On site was something new. It appears some things have changed since that article was written, though, since the only thing available from the Add-On site from Amazon now is just the Kindle USB driver. I installed it, but Windows still doesn't recognize the Kindle. I rebooted the computer and the Kindle just to be sure.
To be clear, when I say it doesn't recognize it, I mean it doesn't even appear in Device Manager as an unknown device. No matter which computer, USB port, or cable I use, Windows 7 and Ubuntu simply do not see a device as there. The Kindle chimes and shows the charging icon, but Windows doesn't see anything as being plugged in.
From what I'm reading, it appears the factory cable I made is useless with the Fire HDX line.
I notice that the SuperSU app is still installed for what it's worth. I can't run anything, so it's kind of hopeless. I can't seem to find the original exploit that I used, but I basically just tapped a button that said "Gimme Root" and then I had super user access. Dangerous, dangerous super user access.
I'm not opposed to opening the Kindle up and tinkering with things, if there's any chance that will help correct this problem.

"Factory cables" (sometimes called fastboot cable) are useless on all HDX models. Stick with a standard, high quality USB cable. I realize this seems counter intuitive but Amazon has done their best to make the latest generation of devices inaccessible to those looking to leverage the hardware or simply recover and non-functioning device.
Your issue with 'seeing the device' is likely due to Windows drivers. If the suggestion from @EncryptedCurse doesn't work suggest deleting all related entries from device manager when the device is tethered, reboot and then reconnect. Windows should install the correct drivers assuming you downloaded the Kindle specific ones in advance. There are shortcuts to this procedure (eg: a reboot really isn't necessary) if you know your way around Windows.

I plugged the Kindle in (I'm at the Settings menu on it, since staying at the launcher/home/favorites screen just threatens to give me epilepsy with its constant flashing), I removed all the USB host controllers and root hubs, then scanned for hardware changes to reinstall them. The Kindle is not found, as a recognized device or an unknown one. As I said, when I boot from a thumb drive into Ubuntu, it doesn't find it either. When I run adb devices, it says no device is found. I have heard of people getting it to take ADB commands anyway, despite the not found error, by just repeatedly rebooting the Kindle, but it hasn't worked for me.

My bad - I overlooked some key details in your original post even though clearly stated. If you are not seeing the the device from any host (and you have certainly done the things I would have suggested) there is little you can do to recover via standard methods. A couple longshot suggestions:
- change cables. I know you tried a homebuilt cable but grab a couple standard cables just to rule out a bad wire; crappy usb cables are more common than people think
- check for a bent/missing pin in the micro-usb port; possible you aren't making a data connection (for others benefit, data and charge use different pins)
I realize both the above are highly unlikely given the sequence of events that lead up to your current problem. Running out of ideas ...
I doubt this will help, but one long shot on Windows is try to use the HDX toolkit to install the adv drivers. It won't do anything else with this build, but if this is a driver issue, it could possibly fix it. Also, if you can try revoking adb permissions if you can get to that window and try a different usb port.
These are all last ditch efforts though.

I can't disable ADB mode on the Kindle itself. I can go to the Developer menu and try to disable it, but it just kicks me back to Settings and the option stays set to On when I go back to it. I can switch between MTP and CTP for whatever that's worth.
I appreciate the optimism. I'm quite upset with myself for doing this to my Kindle, as I really was getting a lot of use out of it. I can't help but be a little mad at Amazon, too, for making it so hard to fix this.
Oh, I was also going to mention that when I go to the stock recovery window with the option between reboot and factory restore, at the bottom under the Kindle logo it says "No Command" not sure what the significance is of that. I've seen where some people get a lot of error messages in that area.

Some very left-field ideas:
- try enabling bluetooth. Obviously if you can get that working there is a way to move files to/from device which might provide additional repair/recovery options.
- there is a rumor that long pressing power (40+ sec) performs some type of 'hard reset' on the device. Never see it work but worth a try.
If the device is still within warranty reach out to Amazon. They are pretty good about providing replacements (say it died during an update) although it will likely be a refurb. Who knows, might get one with a low enough fimware level to unlock. That opens a entirely new set of options.

The 40 second Hard Reset never worked in my case, although My Kindle didn't even boot up after my stupidity.

Understand the ethical concern. Stating it died during an update is technically correct provided you don't indicate who was doing the updating. If asked if the device is rooted then you should come clean (which could impact Amazon's decision whether to replace). I have a great relationship with Amazon and believe honesty will ultimately get you further than deception.
So it doesn't appear there is anything else I can do about this. The Kindle isn't recognized by any computer I have, using Windows XP or 7, or using Ubuntu. I read that XP might be able to see it if I disabled ADB, but it's permanently turned on and if I try to turn it off it kicks me back to the Settings menu without actually changing the setting. Since no computer can see it, I don't think there is anything I can do to recover it. Unless someone figures out a way to flash the ROM by taking the thing apart and doing it manually, which I don't think is going to happen anytime soon. I can't believe I ruined my Kindle. Looks like all that's left is contacting support and seeing if they'll help me with a replacement.
Actually, one other thing. If I have to send the old one back, won't they notice that SuperSU is installed and realize what I did?

Sorry for your troubles. Amazon is pretty easy going - at least in my region. If the device is in warranty and you simply describe the symptoms without going into too much detail you should get a replacement. I don't believe they inspect devices beyond looking for obvious physical damage. The device will likely get 'reprogrammed' and be sold as a refurb. It makes little economic sense to have a tech inspect returned devices unless they are looking for something specific or a pattern of failures. Good luck.

hey, a week ago my phone was crushed by one of my friends somehow and now, as you could guess, it doesnt.. display. No touch response either as far as i can tell. only response is vibration (turning on and off, recovery mode etc)
see.. i've really messed up here. this is a samsung device which means i have two tools useful in aiding my problem. kies and FindMyMobile (to unlock the screen) and as i just noted my phone is locked so kies will not work. why cant i just import files? Usb Debugging is disabled. FindMyMobile? not enabled on device. AllShare? Remote Control? both disabled. everything seems to be blocking me.
so the question is, is there any way possibly using adb or another method to either enable usb debugging or pull my files from my internal SD? if so, sorry to be a pain but this hasn't happened before. well, my data hasn't been as important before. Anyway, could you explain in deep detail for me? i'd appreciate it.
if not, is there any program or method to unlock my phone through my computer?
please, no one suggest USB OTG as even if my device does support it, it either wont work or i wont be able to get one in time. my phone goes off for repair or replacement on the 28th. (factory reset)
i've been looking for the past 5 or so days for a software that can do this. Wondershare was one of them, installed the recovery package on my phone but did nothing at all.
I apologise for the long and vague question im not sure what im asking. i just want all my photos and videos off my phone. nothing else. my computer recognises my phone but doesnt allow data transfer. i guess my priority right now is finding out a way to unlock my phone. Thank you in advance
