I find that the (plastic) screen guard that's provided with this phone is a major smudge magnet. I'm thinking of removing it. I'd like any feedback from anyone who has already taken it off.
Cheers.
UPDATE: I went ahead and got 9H Glass cover. 2-pack for $8 on Amazon. Immensely better than the plastic this phone ships with. I highly recommend doing this, even if you don't personally see a problem with the plastic cover. I promise once you see the difference you'll agree it was worth it.
So happy I posted this question.
Thank you all for your responses!
There doesn't seem to be an oleophobic coating on the display because they expect you to keep the screen protector on. So taking it off might result in even more smudges. Personally, I didn't find the screen protector that came pre-installed to be a smudge magnet. I actually found that it reduced them. I'm not saying the protector necessarily has an oleophobic coating, but that I didn't have a problem with smudges on it. The only reason why I took mine off was because there was some black dust underneath the screen protector and I couldn't get it back on without more dust appearing under it. So I just removed it completely. You might have to buy another screen protector of your choice that will better repel smudges to your satisfaction.
I've taken mine off because I scratched mine with a paper towel (like wtf?) but now I wish I haven't, because things stick to the screen easier. So unless you have an alternate screen protector ready, I'd recommend not.

Thanks. This is information I didn't have. I have a couple of other devices with no plastic cover; I don't have the smudge issue with them. But if there's no coating on the h5, then it's probably best to keep it on.
Buy a tempered glass protection, that's cheap and protect very well the screen (ebay, amazon, aliexpress bangood, etc....) keywords : phone name + "tempered glass" or "9h"

Had various of those. All broke either in my pocket or by a slightdrop (dropping it on the table from like 4cms high. It doesnt protect against smudges very well. Got a plastic matt screenprotector. Tempered glass is a waste of you money in my opinnion.

Have various myself, only broken one, on a tablet.
Plastic is not the same feel as glass on the fingers (don't know how to explain it better in english), and it scratch must faster.

Bought a generic 9H on eBay for 1€
I also have a transparent silicone case for the same price
I also bought the Nillkin 9H, but the other is still good so....
I took my plastic screen protector off the moment I got my tempered glass screen protector. Couldn't really remember how the original one felt since I only had for a very short period of time. That said, I recommend taking screen protector off for something better.
The stock screen protector is trash, all it does is act as a fingerprint magnet.
I did go to a Nillkin 9H. Wow - 90% reduction in smudges, and it is more sensitive than the stock plastic. Dropped the phone a few times, no issues. I do have an iPacky thin case, and it shows the abuse of daily use, but survives fine. It is also very thin. The thick cases defeat the whole purpose of our slim beauty.
I found that replacing the factory plastic screen protector with a high quality glass screen protector makes it a little better in terms of less fingerprint smudges and protection.

i took it off and you get some scratches but not allot. if you look at the jerryrigs video he tested it and its as strong as gorilla glas. So you can take it off. i took mine off because there was a huge scratch in my screen protector and i could not live with that.

I would wait to get a tempered glass, just to prevent any scratches on the LCD

I have literally never used any screen protector and have never had issues. However, YMMV. I immediately took off the screen protector that came with it. I did buy a nice cheap protective case from Amazon prime. It has enough lip to protect the screen and I always make sure not to put my phone in the same pocket as my keys or sharp items.
using honor 5x without screen protector since months, no scratch at all.
bt the back side got a couple of scratches from my bike keys

"I have Glass-M front+back for mine and I absolutely love it. (Removed factory ASF as well). My notes
* It is really smooth. Like freshly made toffee it is so smooth it feels faintly greasy (but it is not). On an almost completely flat table the phone will slowly slide across the surface by itself due to a slope you can't see (be careful)
* I believe touch sensitivity is improved. Finicky DPI sliders in Paranoid Android setups give me no trouble now - before jumping 239,243,241 when I really want 240 dpi exactly. Pencil also works perfectly as a stylus.
* I believe screen brightness and clarity are improved. Subjective and probably due to removal of the ASF (and its invisible tiny scratches)
* Extra glass makes the phone a bit thicker but also much stiffer and I liked this. I also have a Z1 and I miss how solid that phone felt in my hand. Ultra always felt a bit too flimsy (bendy). I also had to widen the slot on my DK30 (sandpaper glued to a flat stick aka big emory board)
* Getting alignment correct is tricky - glass-M slightly smaller than the phone screen edges. Mine went on crooked but I can live with that.
* No dust or bubbles in mine. Used the shower trick of old school film photographers. Long hot steamy shower will effectively clean the room of even tiny dust particles.
* Removing the ASF is a truly harrowing experience (see the other thread). Halfway through you *will* have an "Oh God what have I done" moment. Still totally worth it.
Hope my ramble helps someone. In summary really happy with the Glass-M."
Hey guys,
I'm getting to the point where I'm looking for a high quality, preferably tempered glass, screen protector. My ASF is getting more and more ****ed up day by day (I'm starting to see how bad it really is). I've done some research and found the screen protectors that appear early on in google's search results and through various XDA threads, but I'm curious what other people are using/have used.
I've decided to put this thread together so there can be a repository for screen protector information. This way people who want to protect their ZU from day 1 or those who are going to remove the ASF and cover the phone with something else can have a centralized place to get the information they need.
If you don't mind, please reply to this thread with information regarding the screen protector you are currently using or have used, what kind it is (PET, tempered glass, other), price, the link to purchase it, pictures (if possible), and what you thought of it/if you recommend it.
I'll update the thread (post 2) with the information as it comes in. Hopefully this can help everyone.

How can you tell if you would prefer to not have the ASF if you haven't removed it? Given the seemingly widespread issue of XZU breaking I'd be pretty leery of removing the ASF unless a very sturdy case was going on. I was tempted to try out a product from Armorz which I think was called Tech R(?) - it's 2 tempered glass pieces for back and front - but Iwasn't sure how much support this would give against twisting.
I'm intending to put on the Skinomi Techskin tonight before I go to bed as it's recommended to leave it for 5 hours or so to dry.

I know I'd prefer the ASF removed because of how it looks. It's beat up and scratched, and I've babied this thing. Plus, it's plastic. Glass > Plastic. It's not going to be any less sturdy without the ASF. It's not like a tiny 0.4 mm piece of plastic is going to provide any sturdiness. All it does is contain the glass fragments from flying anywhere if the screen were to break.Underneath the ASF is normal smartphone glass (don't know if it's Gorilla Glass or another brand).
Putting a tempered glass protector on it would definitely make it more sturdy. That's the point, it's tempered.

Atfolix is pretty decent quality. Just switched today.from.anti reflex to crystal clear. Anti reflex is nice when being outside in the sun, but it really weakens the quality of the screen,it looks quite blurry. And what is most annoying... Using pens and stuff on the anti reflex protector will basically lead to drawing on the screen protector.
Crystal clear is perfect.wouldn't notice it's there at all.
I've used atfolix on all of my phones and never had any problems. Very easy to apply, very scratch resistant.

So I put the Skinomi Techskin on. I have since removed it.
Impressions were thus: Applying the protector is simply a matter of misting the adhesive side of the film (liquid is supplied, I believe it's just water and surfactant), applying it to the device and waiting.
As far as optics goes I could not tell the difference between viewing the screen with it off or on the device after it had "cured" (Skinomi's word). Touching it felt like touching a layer of soft rubber that had a tiny bit of grip. I found it didn't impede me in any way but I prefer the feel of other screen protectors and of course no screen protector.
I had to remove it in any case as I got a speck of something underneath it that I couldn't remove but I think I would've removed it in any case due to the feel of it.

In about a month I'll come back and leave some details on the protector I just ordered off E-bay. Set me back $24, and goes by the name "Glass-M Curvy Border Tempered Glass Screen Protector".
I'm weary of E-bay and all it's anonymous vendors - but MIME/Ghost was out of stock and Bodyguardz doesn't have a glass protector for our device so E-bay it was!

Great choice - I think you'll be pleased with it!
There are some experiences with it and other protectors posted in these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571471

Here's what I posted back in March:
I applied Glass-M screen protectors on both the front and back of my phone yesterday, and have been very happy with it so far. It's added a little weight, but it feels sturdier and more premium than before, and looks better than the plastic screen protector I had previously. The touch is also a lot smoother than the plastic one, which was a bit rubbery. I installed mine on top of the ASF, both front and back, since I didn't want the "harrowing" experience of removing it. I feel like it's protected well enough to do without a case, though I may get a slim one to cover the edges of the phone as well. Highly recommended. :good:

I also have an iPaky case bought from ali express. (Black version in my case)
Build quality is good an the case stays higher than the screen protecting it from falls.
The back is super grippy with a nice pattern.
For a screen protector i use a tempered glass one which is stronger than a normal plastic screen protector and doesn't leave bubbles after being applied. It costs a bit more than ordinary screen protectors but you can get one for as low as 1€ from Aliexpress.
I own two cases, one is a simple one with a transparent black color while the other one has an Audi sportscar drawn on it.
So here is what I got:
Aksberry tempered glass screen protector
Pros:
good fit
Tempered glass does seem very hard
rounded edges don't catch on things (like pockets)
Cons:
seems to reduce sensitivity of touch screen
mine has a flaw that has created a bubble under it. It is on the lower edge, so it doesn't affect its operation, just an annoyance to look at.
Nillkin case
Pros:
good fit
edge extends above screen (and screen protector)
extends above buttons. This also helps prevent accidental button presses (am I the only person who thinks that power button is in exactly the wrong spot?)
Cons:
haven't noticed any
Currently using the iPaky case with the silver frame. I love it. The iPaky cases are one of the best out there. I have also a leather flip cover, it's nice but I don't use it much for whatever reason.
did anyone notice the screen protector sensor hole is on the wrong side?
left which has nothing on it, right is where the sensor is.
damn....
Hi,
My Lenovo glass had broken many times & now it gives problem of sensing. Where should I get to change the glass & how much it cost?
I use a tempered glass protector with a skin I ordered from skins4gadgets. The skin is good enough for my usage.
Hello,
i just received my Nillkin 3D CP+ Max tempered glass two hours ago,
and guess what? it was damaged 10 minutes later because of my casology vault 1 case!
i wonder what should i do to protect my phone's screen from drops?
any ideas about Anything compatible with that case i should use to protect my phone?
seems like all glass protectors are the same with the cases , also other soft protector isn't designed to protect the phone against drops
what should i do?
Honestly i'm giving up!
I break 3 tempered glass screen protectors with small 0.5m drops. Reason is different from yours. Due to our edge screen, temper glass will get cracked easily.
For your case, u should look for " case friendly " screen protectors. Find those which does not cover the edges or/and full screen. Can be tempered glass, PET or healing verison.
I tried without screen protector. The conclusion is very nice screen but gorilla glass 5 is NOT scratch proof. I got some minor scratches.
In Singapore, we have plenty in physical shops, and online shops like q10sg and lazada etc. selling mobile phone accessories. So i have no links to share with you. Just search for some " case friendly " screen protectors.
Ps:
I wasted about sgd100 on screen protectors. Hahah
I gave up on tempered glass. I use spigen neo flex wet apply for now. Going for lifeproof fre when it comes out.
I basically gave up on TGSP's on these types of devices as well. Display is holding up pretty well w/ my rough handling, haven't seen any scratches yet but I'm sure it'll have some sometime down the line. Lol
Ive spent over $100 on screen protectors for the S8 (whitestone dome was $45) and not a single one has worked. The amount of money Ive paid would have paid for 9 months of Samsung Premium care and with the free month Id get 10 months of insurance which is longer than Ill have this phone. Yes Id still have to pay a $99 deductible but Id have a perfect phone in 24 hours if I break it vs no insurance and a box of useless screen protectors.
Ive been able to return all but one protector so Ive decided to focus my money on insurance and peace of mind knowing that when it breaks Ill have a new one.
Skip the screen protectors and get insurance. The headache is just not worth it. If the scratches get to the point of bothering you, start carrying the phone naked. Eventually you're going to need to file a claim.

Oh yeah, I should've mentioned -- I've got a Spigen Neo Hybrid and it slips on/off without any issues and works with the protector.
I've had the same exact issue. I've bought the Spigen Ultra Hybrid case (perfect case by the way, I love it, had the same on my Nexus 6, showcases the back of the phone while protecting it just as well as the well-known neo hybrid case). I knew that the tempered glass screen protectors won't work with it well and I didn't want to waste my money on them. I looked for something different. I ended up buying the official screen protector for under $10 (you get 2 for the price) (this one, only for S8 instead of S8+: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/accessories/official-samsung-s8-screen-protector-t3600373 , model number is Samsung ET-FG950CT).
I thought it might fit with the case. But when I came home, after a while I realized that this isn't gonna work. So I was deciding what to do, return the protector? But then I'd have to find another one, which might be long and expensive journey. I didn't want that.
So I grabbed my scissors and started to cut the protector carefully. There was not much I could lose. I cutted it to the point where it doesn't interfere with the case, but covers pretty much the whole display. It isn't the most elegant solution, but it works and I am satisfied with it. And I still got one screen protector to repeat the process in case this one ever gets damaged

The tempered glass that works for me is the Ankoon tempered glass screen protector. The screen protector just covers up to about where the edge begins to curve. In that way when you put a case on it, it doesn't rub up against it were it bends the tempered glass protector.
I have the GS8 with the Spigen Neo Hybrid case and I do not have any problems with the tempered glass screen protector lifting against the case. If you do get this tempered glass screen protector, I would advise you to get the 2-pack of this screen protector since its not that much more than the single pack and you have a spare screen protector handy to replace the current screen protector if it starts to break down.

i opened the link at amazon and i saw A LOT of angry people reviewing the Protector
Same, I would only trust full adhesive ones and not ones with adhesives on the sides only.
I guess I got lucky on mine. Have the S8 Plus and have had no problems at all with my screen protector. I read up on them beforehand and read plenty of reviews and just decided to not even attempt a glass screen protector.
I ordered two kinds on Amazon. The IQ Shield liquid skin, and the Spigen Neo-flex. I put the IQ Shield on, took maybe 10 minutes, and haven't had a single issue after about a month now, all the edges are still stuck down. It's very clear and seems durable. It reminds me of a Zagg invisible shield but not nearly as "rubbery" feel. It feels like a cross between a Zagg invisible shield and a glass one. I'm still on the first one so haven't had a chance to compare it to the Spigen and I also have a spare IQ Shield.
I also ordered the Caseology coastline series slim transparent cover. Works great with the above screen protector. Like they were made for each other and it protects great. It's taken quite a few drops and at least twice has flown out of my cycling top flying down the road at 23 mph. Barely a scratch!!

Yes because they are bunch of noobs that do not know how to apply this tempered glass screen protector. Anyways it seems like with these curved screens almost all of the tempered glass screen protectors just have adhesives on the side and you stick it on.
I was like you fed up and almost just gave in to do the wet screen protectors but just the mere thought of having to spray the beautiful phone with the solution and squeegee out the excess AND not to mention that you have to wait like half a day for the thing to dry out before using it made me at least consider trying 1 more tempered glass screen protector which this one talked about having less real estate it covers to provide enough cushion to apply a case and sure it enough it worked for me. I ordered the 2 pack version which is through the link below. For some reason Amazon separated the product reviews so this one has more positive reviews but you are never going to satisfy everyone.
I guess I could post a pic to show what my phone looks like with the screen protector on and the case.

There is no need to use screen protector in today's phones. I stopped in late 2015 and none of my phones got any scratches on screen (and I put them in my bag with my keys all the time). The gorilla glass 4/5 are super strong and scratch resistant.
I bought a couple from AliExpress dint work as well as needed the screen fully works but bringing the notification panel down was an issue but give the Whitestone dome protector i have a friend who uses it and says its brilliant though its pretty expensive but rather 50 bucks than getting a new screen my Opinion
Just got these in 2 days ago and it works great! They actually have the screen protector just the right width do that the case does not peel up the glass, also my old Spigen case doesn't peel it up either, just throwing that out there if you dont like the cases.

I've been reading/watching many different reviews regarding tempered glass for OnePlus 5 here and in other websites.
Currently, it seems that there isn't a decent full-covered tempered glass .
Should I just order Otterbox Achiever and just retain the stock screen protector that OnePlus 5 comes with until a decent full-covered tempered glass comes out? I know that case and screen protector protect different parts of the phone but I don't want my future phone to be defenseless.
I'm willing to listen to your suggestions.
Thank you!
Tempered glass is great, rellay protected many of my phones. Currently I have a Orzly tempered glass on my Oneplus 5, I also bought an otterbox but it raises the glass. It sucks that one has to choose between otterbox protection and tempered glass protection.

I also want a tempered glass but the reviews on Orzly are bad. I've read that it's only good at the start but as hours or days pass by, dust will get under it or the glue will start to come off, etc. There were also reports of rainbow effect.
What's your experience?

I have some rainbow effect. The biggest problem is that it is not compatible with the otterbox. The otterbox raises the orzly tempered glass. Does anyone know of a tempered glass that works with otterbox? I guess some do but that is the kind which has black frames that cover some of the screen.

I think there's no otterbox-compatible full-cover tempered glass right now. That's why I'm thinking of dropping the idea of tempered glass for now and just buy otterbox.
I'll just change case when there's a good tempered glass.

I've gone the route of the Otterbox and the Nilkin TGP which isn't ideal as it's not a full screen protection (but is full adhesion with zero rainbow) BUT it covers the majority and the Otterbox will do the rest.

If it is alright, can you give us pictures of your OP5?
I have an Otterbox and temper glass. I watched a YouTube video comparing the temper glass with a lot of cases and validated that it fit. I feel as though his review was solid and honest and I've been happy with the combination and would recommend it.
However, I do see microdots in full sun exposure but it's not enough for me to complain about. It doesn't pick up finger prints or smears either. I do see from time to time an "oil spill" effect but it goes away after being out of my warm pocket for a few moments. Afterall, then adhesive is only around the edges so this oil effect is expected to me.
I put my protector on as straight as I could however, I could have done better (does come as a two pack) Thus, maybe once a week I do have to reseat the case because it does appear as though the case grabs on to the glass only by the volume rocker, which already is the most flimsy part of the case. Again, not a big deal for the added protection that I want and it rarely happens. Besides, you should be cleaning your case once a week anyways so there.
Hopefully that's helpful. Here's the YouTube link-

I like to note that the Spigen case supposedly works too however, I haven't broke down and bought one yet.
If anything, not to hijack, I wouldn't buy an Otterbox. It's too filmsy around the volume rocker. It needs a harder TPU shell.
Cheers

Sadly only other photo taking device I have is my PS Vita so quality isn't great but you can clearly see the edges etc, fortunately the protection of the Otterbox gives about a 2mm lip as well so likelyhood of hitting the unprotected parts is slim.

No worries. The pictures are still clear.
Hmmm. I'm a heavy watcher of anime in phones when I'm traveling by bus or train so I guess, I'm gonna pass with Nillkin.
Thank you very much!

Yeah understandable, it's annoying that there seems to be no perfect solution to this, I've heard the RhinoShield Crash Guard is a possible assuming you also put a skin on the back to protect that.
I'm happy with the solution I have as I feel it gives the best possible protection right now, although appreciate it's not ideal for media consumption. Good luck in finding what suits you best :good:

Yes, I agree. It's kind of disappointing that it's been months since the release of OP5 and there are still no decent tgsp.
As the Samsung screen protectors are just plastic ones, I need a real protector and back cover!
Check Amazon. There is a lot to choose from. If you stick to a known brand you should be OK. I had my case and glass screen protector before I received my phone. I got a clear plastic case so I can see the color of my green phone. I have been using similar cases for years without any issues. This is the first time in a long time I got to use a tempered glass screen protector. My last few phones had curved screens and the glass really didn't fit properly.

I'd recommend you a film screen guard from Gadgetshieldz which is not plastic, it is made from nano polymer as I saw on their website. This protector can self-heal so you can get this instead of the plastic ones.
I got the amfilm 2 pack OneTouch tempered glass screen protector. Turned on increased sensitivity, re-registered my fingerprints and it seems fine.
When applying it, press from the bottom where the fp sensor is, it might help.
I went with amFilm HD Clear Hybrid Screen Protector. Its a 2 pack and also comes with 2 camera protectors as well. I didnt use them, but the screen protector looks flawless.
I read too many issues with glass protectors, so while I ordered one, it will stay put away for now.

I'll check it out, tempered glass should be good not the one that breaks soon. Is the glass doesn't break for a long time?

Thanks for the info, I've ordered one for my S22 Plus and I think it'll get delivered after I get the phone!
I'm going to try the Samsung screen protector (it's cheap and on offer!).
My S20 came with a screen protector already installed, and I discovered, by an accidental drop onto a brick corner, that it does a decent self-healing job. The brick gouged right in the middle of the screen, making a rough raised welt. I thought I'd have to replace it, but after a day it had flattened out, closed up, and become much less noticeable. It's still visible, but it's smooth and looks more like a small chip than a deep gouge.

But the Samsung screen protectors are plastic and it scratches a lot and blurs the display in less than 6 months!!!

The one on my S20 has lasted pretty well for 2 years, so that's not a problem for my usage. I don't want a glass one that can shatter or crack when damaged.

Yes, the glass protector shatters and it is frustrating! and my usage is high so I'll get so many scratches. As clairlara said in the discussion I ordered this Gadgetshieldz film screen protector and it can really self-heal the scratches that occur on it as she said and I like this instead of a plastic protector! check it out,
