Worth to buy? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I am looking to buy the LG G5. Is it worth the buy?
You hear a lot of different story's (good and bad) about this phone.

I have no problems that some others have with build quality. The battery lasts me all day and the display is flawless, no gap in between the bottom battery plug and display.
I love the G5! The only thing I wish was that it has more development.

I like it compared to my prev g3 and g4. I love the camera. Not fan of the modules so I didn't removed the bottom part.
I'm really bored because I have the unrootable H860 which making me think to move to oneplus 3 or xiaomi mi5.

I have the vs987 If you're lookin' to root, this isn't it!! UI had to be designed by a 6 year old with a half box of crayons!! Riddled with Verizon bloatware, and LG crapware, you can certainly do better then this disappointment!! Yes, it makes calls, txts, but so does a flip phone, and for a lot less $$, and a lot less bloat and crap ware!! I enjoy this phone so much, I'm purchasing a OP3!!

Same thing here. OP3 or mi5?

I agree with the above Verizon user. Steer clear. This phones one good feature is the camera. And even then I've been having issues with it occasionally lagging with the shutter and not saving images. Otherwise bloated beyond belief. And battery drains itself by just existing. I've never had a phone with such terrible battery life right out of the box. And that's with good signals, force stopping apps, etc. Even in airplane mode the phone still drains itself.

Wait until the V20 comes out next month

Us carrier are really bad, i've a H850 Vodafone and the bloatware of the carrier is not too much.
And as far as i know every mobile phone sold by a us carrier is full of bloat, is not a G5 thing

Anyone come from a G2?

I have a G2, love the phone, but am interested in the G3. I was wondering if any of you who have gotten the G3 came from the G2 and what your opinions and thoughts on the switch are.

swapped an upgrade and am trying out a g3 right now... just got it tonight, so i'm not judging it quite yet. I think the new screen is really nice, not a huge difference off the 1080p screens, but still nice. battery seems meh so far, and I had awesome battery life on my G2.... i'm gonna give it the weekend and see how it does. Then again, my g2 was running Mahdi, etc, so it really isn't a fair comparison
Mike
Someone I work with got one and it seems really nice, the stock OS seems very nice and I really like the look of it, toned down and flattened out from the stock OS on the G2. With the G2 I will go back to stock but can never seem to stay there long before I miss CM11 and go back to it. Overall very happy with the G2 on CM11, just a nerd who likes having the latest and greatest lol.
I came from the VZW G2. I, too, was looking forward this phone as being the next greatest thing. I DO like the phone. I am still getting used to the size. When you hold the G2 and G3 together you can see that the G3 isn't hugely bigger than the G2. But to me it really FEELs bigger. Trying to decide if I really like that. I'm not a fan of the big phablets, and maybe the G2 is as big as I want to go. We'll see. I like the ability to have more memory with the SD card - that is a big difference. I always had to keep an eye on memory with my G2. Battery life is not as good as my G2. That may be better when we start to get some custom ROMs, but for the first time in many months I find myself below 30% at the end of the workday. I expected to be wowed by the screen and display. That didn't happen. It's fine, just not a "wow - look at that" kind of experience.
Well, hope this helps. As always, YMMV.

I came from the g2 also and I agree with everything that had been said, it's not a huge upgrade. I only paid 99 dollars so it was worth it for me and the memory card slot is a great add, plus the I love my g2 so getting the g3 was a no brainer for me. The battery dies faster for sure but last the whole day still, I've not had one problem with the phone at all yet.

If it wasn't for the $99, and I had to pay the $600, no way I'd switch. The G2's a great phone and will still be going strong a year from now. Heck, two years from now.

Agreed!
I am just surprised at the weight, so light compared to G2.. hell I didn't think mine was a real G3 till I threw in the battery
Love the extra real estate but gonna have to change DPI (things too big).
I came from a G2 as well and for me it was a game changer. I did not have very good signal with the G2 but with the G3, I am now getting signal everywhere and even in places where I wouldn't imagine. I really like my G3!

I can second the boost in signal. My g2 was horrible at my house. G3 is a champ. Couple that with a larger screen, removable battery and expandable storage, a more premium feel and design that is the same as all other variants. (Something owners of the Verizon g2 had to deal with as far as cases) I think it's a worthy upgrade. Especially at the $99 price tag.

Double ditto here. I LOVED my G2 (on Verizon), and even though I'm only a week in with the G3, I still miss it (a little) - the G3's pros:
*screen is bigger
*removable back/battery/SD card
*stock ROM is more tolerable (though I still use Nova Launcher)
*lighter than G2/feels better/back isn't gross
*rear keys are much improved
For me, it was a no brainer - sold my G2 to a buddy, then used the profit to do alternate upgrade and swap out the phones. Made a little cash and got a newer, free phone. At $199 or full retail I probably would have held only my G2 though. I will say my G3 seems to handle the 3G/4G handoffs a little better, my G2 (where I work, I get horrible, horrible signal strength) would get hot during the day and often I would shut off mobile data to preserve the battery. The G3 will get me thru a day at work even with the terrible connection without shutting data off. The battery life is very acceptable, with a fully day of usage (yesterday as an example on a 50/50 mix of LTE & WiFi I got to just over 5 hours SOT, 16 hours off a charge and had 6% left, and did a fair bit of video streaming during that time) for my needs easily.
For free/cheap, I'd say do it if the size doesn't bother you. Someone else in the thread mentioned it doesn't LOOK bigger, but it FEELS bigger. I'd say that nails it right on the head. At full retail, I'd say stick with what you've got.
Wife has the G2. I got it for her about 2 months ago.
If the G2 had a removable sd I would have gotten it over the GS4 I bought last year.
I came from a GS4.
Anyway, with the G2 and G3 side by side, you know they are both LG and Verizon.
G3 is a little taller but not much wider.
My wife has a bulkier case on her phone and I have a thin case on mine.
Now with them side by side they are about the same size.
If it's size you are worried about, I was too.
With the screen on the phone looks MASSIVE, because the screen is.
But on the positive, they were able to fit a phablet size screen in something that is about the same size as the G2, Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8.
I wouldn't take my GS4 back if you paid me.
But the G3 as an upgrade to a G2??? Only if a removable battery and/or SD support is important.
Only the SD is important to me.
I have to agree with 99% of the above statements. I went from a Note 2 to a G2 for a few months and now the G3. I really liked the smallness of the G2 compared to the bulk of the Note 2. Thought I was not going to like going back up to a 5.5 but LG made it more manageable. Overall upgrade from G2 to G3, I would not recommend unless you need the removable battery and SD card. No performance gain to be had, and some applications have proven it to take a hit between the two. I can imagine the screen makes for most of the performance hit. But it does look great and takes awesome pictures and video. The only reason I upgraded was the good price and the old G2 will be replacing a Nexus on another line.:good:

LgG2 Still Rocks!

Forgive me, I'm sure these posts keep cropping up but I just had to share.
Got a Samsung Note 4, and yes, it does a lot, and does it quickly. But....
Believe it or not, my G2 keeps up with it on all fronts and on many of them, surges ahead.
1st, the screen that the G2 got is still nearly unbeatable. I know the Note four is higher res, but the G2 screen is bright and clear, the colors are snappy and the thing pops. It's far more 'exciting' to look at and you really can't tell the difference in res. Further, the glass on the G2 is the most glorious I've used, very smooth and very, very hard. 2 years on, it still feels like liquid with very few scratches on it, without ever having used a case. The Note four, 2 weeks old, micro-scratch hell.
2nd, the battery kills the Note, hands down. I'm rooted and haven't refreshed in many months so it's settled down, I use DS battery saver and SD maid, and consistently the phone that's still living at 11pm is the G2. All the rest have collapsed and are recuperating with their chargers.
And lastly, speed. The Note does a lot of things. It's a productivity demon, it can multi-task very many different functions without ever slowing down, it's consistent and whatever you throw at it -games open, internetting, office+cloud, video/music, Facebook, split window, multi-window, window-in-window, - all AT THE SAME TIME, it doesn't stumble. Doesn't even cough.
But.
The G2 is faster. Imagine that. At everything it does within its system, it's faster. Once on the net no phone can beat the Note's vicious engine but everything within the G2's system is quicker. Opening and switching Apps, gliding through screens etc is not only very fast but very smooth, and.... The experience is like no other because of that wonderfully curved, beautifully coated, extra tough glass.
A bonus: that beautifully constructed, stock G2 home launcher! Yeah, I know, I'm the first to change launchers, used them ALL trust me, all, the stock G2 launcher is the slickest.
I was going to sell my G2 but I'm going to keep it. For life. Once in a while a company gets it right, and the G2 got it right. The few things it didn't, it tried to correct for in the G3 - the measly 16gb which just doesn't cut it these days, no access to the battery or to expandable memory -these things hurt it but the G3 is a completely different machine. And it's not as good.
The LgG2 chassis has become quite simply, one of the best I've ever owned. Things came together for LG here like a good number one hit - very hard to replicate. I hope they manage to pull something off with the G4 that erases their rush with the G3 - not that it's a bad Phone.
Sorry for my rant but there it is. After a month with both phones side-by-side, I had to let you all know. The G2 rocks properly. Like nothing else out there. Still.

Agreed... I have had mine for over a year Now...I used to be a phone addict always wanting something faster...well the lg g2 is the only phone that has felt "fast" enough...the battery is amazing and the screen is amazing as well..I kivr the bezel and lg's software...hands down the best phone I have ever owned still 1 year down the road.

I have g2. Not selling yet. But I like g3 and note 4 is really good. I think I can keep g2 for this year.

Still rocking my g2 but a lot of your post is just patently false from using my gf's Note 4. The res is distinguishable, text looks a lot crisper on the note and that's something I noticed from first glance. Same for performance, I'm satisfied with my G2's performance but the G3 and Note 4 are just snappier. Only thing I can't speak definitively on is battery life as I haven't used the Note 4 for extended periods of time but I don't see how a used G2 battery is beating a brand new phone's battery, even if the resolution is higher the note is also amoled which will save power in certain circumstances. That sounds more like app/wakelock differences or one phone being rooted with the correct kernels/changes while the other is not.
We can love our G2 because it's still a great phone without hyping it against newer models. I'll probably have my g2 until the G4 or some other phone comes out later this year but I won't delude myself into thinking it's an objectively better phone than things with objectively better screens/processors/battery.
I got my G2 bundled with a postpaid plan on a 2-year contract. At the time, I was expecting that, after a year, I'd be looking for a replacement phone just to keep up with the times. But it's already been 16 months, and I still can't find any reason to drop this phone and get a new one. Heck, I even like this better than the G3, TBH. I even think that I'll be keeping this one active even after I renew my contract and get a new phone, maybe the next Note.
Agree G2 is perfect sized phone. Especially with the Verzion version having wireless charging. Do wish it had microSD slot. Thankfully Google+ backup fixes that.
Obsessive
Speed, Display, Power, Features and whatnot? You name it and we have it. Salute to the LG for pulling up a truly smartphone. Truly Amazing.

I don't think you have lived with both phones. The LgG2 screen is immediately richer and more iridescent than the Note 4. It is only on prolonged use that res begins to show, and only because the Note uses and handles small text better and has deeper Black's on images. You DO realise after a while that indeed, the qHD on the Samsung is the best on the market - you get it when you try to go back to full HD, don't let anyone kid you - and it becomes clear that LG accentuates the brilliance of its screens - but that's not the point. In use, the LgG2 remains an exciting display, and the glass on it is unsurpassed even by the Note 4.
The battery in the LgG2 only seems to get better, the longer the phone sits on its hardware undisturbed, and is factually, longer-lasting than the Note 4. In fact, battery life is the main issue facing the Note. You will need your spare before the day is over and I suspect all firmware updates will be focused on this for a while.
The Note is a beast, no doubt. The point here is not comparison. It is that the LgG2 in particular, 2 years into the fray, is no slacker.
The G3? The jury is back on that one - they'll have to fix it with the G4 - the reviewers are well aware of that, it's all over the place. Where the G2 was splendid, the G3 was just the 1st with qHD.
It will need more than that this year.
Just saying.

I agree! I sold mine last year and have had numerous phones since then. Some of them multiple times! The G2 remains my favorite. I currently have the 6 Plus, and decided the other day to sell it and grab me a 128gb iPad Air 2 and pick up an older phone. I'll end up about even on the deal. Well, I have a mint Nexus 5, a mint LG G2, and a new LG G2 in the mail heading my way. Found a great deal on the new one after buying the mint condition and couldn't pass it up. I'm not sure whether I'll keep the Nexus or the G2, but I'm excited to give the G2 another run!

I still enjoy my G2, still performs just as sharp as the day I got it about 13 months ago. Because it's a D800, I expect AT&T to have us wait for the Lollipop update. Rooting is out of the question for me, as I have experienced overheating both times I tried it.

HTC 10 reviews are out, and here are my thoughts...

I have been torn between G5 and HTC 10 for some time now and after watching HTC 10 reviews I have come to these conclusions:
Display
Better on G5, more vivid and sharper. HTC 10 one looks too washed out.
Camera
G5 wins no contest here. HTC 10 camera is not bad but low light performance is pretty average, also no wide angle.
Build quality
HTC 10 for sure. LG needs to sort their QC issues.
Design
G5, since HTC 10 looks like a mashup of iphone and old galaxy phones.
Battery
G5's removable options really is better here, even though HTC 10 has got slightly bigger battery. Nothing beats 0-100 in 5 seconds.
UI
I perfer the stock HTC 10 UI over all-white G5's, which is the 1st thing i am looking to change if we ever get root.
Performance
According to Anandtech HTC 10 NAND is almost 35% slower to S7(G5 uses same NAND as S7) in read speed, so G5 will have much better overall performance.
Developement
HTC has confirmed unlocked bootloader and even if its locked by carrier you can easily get it unlocked from HTC. Whereas with G5 its hard to say anything atm.
Finally, HTC have said that they welcome everyone to customize their devices with custom roms and will honor warranty claims if anything goes wrong (upto to a certain extent). With LG its a straight 'NO' and unlocking bootloader means bye bye warranty.
So there you have it, I think i will wait and see how HTC 10 shapes up in next week or so, and maybe then I will decided wether to swap or keep my G5.
Let me know what you guys think.
I think I'd wait a little longer for the HTC to get into more hands.
That being said. I am more interested in the HTC 10 than the G5.

I'm absolutely loving the G5. My wife had the s7 and neither of us like it. So we both got G5. I have heard lots of bad stories about the G5 but ours are both cosmetically and functionally perfect. She's had hers for a week and me 2 days.
I'm also considering trading mine for the m10. ( only for development) i no doubt feel like I'm downgrading if I trade but I'm a flashaholic and I can't stand no root. However if I trade I'm afraid I will regret it if root is discovered for the G5. Because this phone is a beast! Super fast and solid imo. Wish the HTC at least would have gone with the 820 chipset

I'm loving the G5 as well and I'm coming from the M8 and M9. I had a lot of trouble with HTCs customer service and do not plan to ever visit that situation again. The M8 was cool and boom sound great and the development was plentyful. That's all it had,as far ad anything else it was an above average phone. The M9 speaks for itself.I just don't trust HTC enough to put all my eggs in one basket again.
As far as the G5,its been a solid phone IMO. The camera is very good, but could use some tweaking for low light situations. Its speedy and lag free. I've not had any issues other than the casing could have been better. For a $700 flagship, no cut comers should have been took.

Last I checked there are no full HTC 10 reviews, only glorified hands on using beta devices. When the G5 was being judged off the beta phones, everyone was defending it asking to wait for the official device. We owe the same to HTC.
The only thing I'm comfortable judging is the design, and I'd give that to HTC. The G5 is fairly unattractive. They ruined whatever design they had when they removed their back buttons.
Either way, I'm getting an HTC 10. LG lost a lot of my support with the G4 bootlooping fiasco and the G5 just seems like a gimmick/half baked modular device. Not to mention all the QC issues that have popped up.
I personally think the HTC 10 is setting itself up to be a good phone. I like the simplified look.

There are some design flaws with HTC 10, like that big arse camera at front and in-your-face notification light ? I like my workplace clutter/distraction free and them 2 will definitely get on nerves.

The notification LED can be turned off. I'd imagine most people would keep it on however since it's a coveted feature throughout most of the community.
That being said, I think the most annoying distraction ever added to a phone is easily the Always on Display. I had to turn it off after my first day at work. I found myself always looking at the phone every time the clock/information moved around to prevent burn in. I also think it's a useless feature and the only thing it's good for is draining battery life.

Starting my 3rd night with the LG G5. I have seen nothing but good from this phone. My battery life is amazing! The os is blazing fast with this hardware. And mine has no flaws cosmetically either. It also runs cooler then any pho e I have owned in the past 7 or 8 years ( mostly sammy) If I swap it for the HTC ( and I probably will) it will be purely based on development alone. I'm sure the HTC is a quality phone but so is this and my wife's G5.

Regardless of the modules being somewhat gimmicky. The G5 on its own is a really good device. One thing that's not a gimmick is the wide angle camera lens. Plus the fact that it kept the IR blaster is pretty great. As we know, deciding on a phone has to do with the features that matter to us personally. I wouldn't let the modules sway your decision all that much. They are kind of just an added bonus.
For full disclosure I have had the HTC M7 and M8 and currently on the LG G4. I have also just ordered the HTC 10.
That being said, I think both the LG G4 and HTC 10 are great proposition's in their own right. The camera on the G4 was fantastic and the camera proposition has only improved in the G5. My concern is whether the duel photo set up is easily transportable to other phones / computers. I know Zoe's don't work well off a HTC phone for example.
The removable battery in the LG phones is also a big bonus for two reasons. Long term battery degeneration and swap out for full. Unless there are offers to get the second battery then this is a hidden second cost that I'm not seeing people factor in to the cost of the phone?
The HTC 10 design is something I like. This is subjective so won't go into too much detail there. I do find it curious that the M8 to M9 got slated for lack of innovation in design but the s6 and edge to S7 and edge has not even come up??
Build quality is something that I'm seeing as a potential issue with the G5, particularly with the module on the bottom not matching up to the main body of the device. I think HTC wins this battle against basically any other Android OEM.
The modules seem pretty darn expensive, not available (or available everywhere) and concerns that they may not work on future phones? Again these seem like additional costs to get the phone you might want (better for photos or for music). I'm hearing early news that the B&O play music module is better than the HTC 10 in certain scenarios but I don't like how much I will have to pay extra for it.
The bootloader unlocking and dev support for me can not be shouted about enough. Especially after the experience I have had on the G4. A fraction of the development that we had on the M8 and even the M9 which didn't get as many devs move to.. Given that this is XDA and attracts a certain type of Android user, I figure that to be massively important to most people in this community.
I do commend LG for going down a different route with the modularity, its exactly what we need in the Android ecosystem to give users truely different options. I feel like the G6 (if they continue to refine this approach) will have the build concerns sorted and deliver a great phone. Only thing LG need to work on is allowing bootloader unlocks (even if that means a voided warranty).
i was all for the htc 10 until i saw that EE in the UK are selling the LG G5 for £399 on pay as you go. Just got an unlock code from EE for £8.99 put the voda sim in it and happy as Larry.
I dropped my s7 edge whch i like and a better all round phone tbh (not much in it) and the insurance gave me a cash settlement of £639! Ive basically made £239 profit!
Cant believe EE are selling this phone for £409 (have to buy a £10 top up). Thats ludicrous !!!!!
No removable battery, no care. Seriously though, I am a battery swapper so if a phone doesn't have one I can swap out I'm not really interested.

Is the G5 a good upgrade?

Hi, I'm now on a Galaxy Note 3 and would like to upgrade to the G5, since it has the specs I'm looking for.
However, I felt like asking you guys if there's any better option I should consider, or any defects that are not worth risking for (bootloping?)
Thanks a lot in advance

The price and specs are great. The rom/root community is okay size. Build quality is trash. Don't buy this phone. With a little more money you could buy the One Plus 3T or One Plus 5. Better specs, build quality, rom/root, etc.
My next phone is Note 8 or One plus 3T or 5. I am not trying to bash phone. Just giving you an honest opinion. Look through the threads you will see tons of people with GPS, Backlight Bleed, bootloop issues, etc. I love LG, but will be my last LG phone for a long time.

I'm looking to get the H850 for my mom since it is only $300CAD if I get my friend to bring it back from Hong Kong. Can't find any another phone in that price range that would be better than the LG G5 H850...
Hardware and price are amazing, especially the model RS988 that covers the most weirdest bands that are available in areas like Canada. Unfortunately, the root/bootloader on the rest of models are bringing tons of problems, if its rootable/unlockable at all. Custom firmware choice is very poor, and they are raw even after 1 year of release. What it means is that you basically can't use NFC on most of custom roms (if not all). The stock firmware on the other hand is very well made and stable. I'm using it with Magisk without issues. So far the only problem is stock kernel doesn't seem to be energy efficient, so battery flies away in a day or two of use. However, battery is replaceable, what is offered in not that many flagship phones nowadays.
I can't agree about bad quality of build. I would say its very good comparing to what else you can meet nowadays.
Other than that, it's one of the best phones available for 250$ on B&H (Titan) if not the only good one.
Yeah not sure about other countries, but in Canada it's hard to beat the LG G5. OnePlus 3T/5 are $600/$650CAD+tax respectively and the G5 can be found for $330-370 all in. Even 2016 mid-range phones like the Axon 7 and Honor 8 are $400-$500+tax.
Build quality isn't up to par with other flagships, but it's not terrible IMO. At least it's better than most mid-range phones.
It is a lottery phone.

I would have to agree with this statement.
Build quality is pretty bad guys sorry. I've had plenty of low/Mid/High end of phones. I've never seen this many issues as this one. When I see GPS and backlight bleed threads filled with countless complaints. Yeah that's bad build quality.
Damiloveu statement pretty much sums it up right it's a lottery phone. 50/50 hit or miss, be for warned potential new g5 buyers. GREAT phone if no issues. And if it does have problems many headaches await you.

I would install Fulmics on the LG G5 if I can get it for my mom, so the RS988 is out of the question for me. I just cannot buy phones if I cannot install custom ROMs on it. I hate being at the mercy of manufacturers for software updates.
I'm so confused as to why manufacturers cannot just sell one or two variant of the same phone. Making dozens of variants seems so stupid.
coming from P9.
Maybe my most complain bout this device is the GPS as i always use gps for ingress, second is battery and the rest is the design and build quality though I dont have the screen retentention issues yet.
Thanks a lot, everybody. I think I'll get this phone, it features literally *every* feature I need on a device.

I got a used AT&T H820 and it had the GPS issue, especially worse when cloudy and rainy. However, I returned the AT&T one and got an unlocked RS988 and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

If you need a hot swappable battery, the G5 is great.
If you game a lot, and want the ability to do so without remaining plugged in and burning up your phone, then the G5 is perfect for you.
As far as performance, no issues whatsoever.
Battery life is average, but with the ability to swap out new batteries and charge dead ones outside the phone in a charging port, you honestly don't have battery downtime. It's just always up.
That's the biggest advantage of this phone.
If you're looking for a better deal, you don't need unlimited battery life, or you're looking for a rich featureset, I would look elsewhere.
The gps is absolute wank and I don't have the time or inclination to do a hardware fix. I did a quick comparison with my friend who owns an OP3 indoors; his had gps lock with 15 seconds but mine was still searching after several minutes. In fact, I have almost missed turnings when driving a few times because of this POS. I never replace my phone until it has had 18 months usage but for the G5, I will make an exception.
I have LG G5 since April 2016 after my Note 3 : no root or anything, LG updates regulary.
I never have problems with it.
-No bootloop, no GPS bugs, a better reception with the same carrier...
-Camera is really good, especially the large wide-angle.
-Battery life: a day with a little use (waze to go work -one hour/day) wifi on, "always on display" always activate, some internet at evening : Facebook, Twitter, insta, mails...
-IR for soundbar, tv is really good !!
But no SPen ? So I will get the Note 8, really great for work, with the camera options easier than LG suit.
And finally, i prefer Samsung environment, even if G5 is really a good phone.

It's not worth the broken GPS sensors which are a known hardware defect. They'll fix it for you, but it's never the root of the problem so it will come back. I've sent mine in 3 times, GPS works for a couple days, then ceases to work again. Terrible quality control, by far the worst phone I've owned. My Galaxy S4 was better.

well, looks like i'm not the only one who migrate from Galaxy Note 3. let me tell you my short little story
I upgraded since my Note 3 were exynos version which didnt support 4g band. i was looking for cheap second hand devices with LTE support  ( dont judge me, bussines is low here in indonesia i cant afford phone more than 250$ - on indonesia currency and prices of course)
so i search all available markets, online and offline. some guys recomended 3 phone. LG G5 h860, xperia z5, and HTC m9 ( all cost about 200-250$ here, second handed) so i spent about 3 days on google comparing all 3 phone. i kick z5 out from my list since i had a bad experience with sony devices ( heat issue, poor audio quality, you name it) so it just m9 or g5. m9 is a good phone, its the cheapest one, had official support for lineage and SlimOS. solid built, and dual speaker. the drawback were its photo quality, its much worse than my note 3 even with 20mp camera. but at that time i cant find g5, the only available one were g5 SE version which is downgrade one ( 3gb ram and qualcom 625) and it cost about 299$!! hell no, so i pick the m9. but as i said before, i'm not really satisfied. the main advantages comparing my old note were: better sound, better network 4g, better official OS ( Lollipop vs nougat) and custom, and fast charging. but thats the only option i got that time. after several months some guys here sold his g5 h860 on low prices, i dont need to think twice so today my g5 finally arrived. still looks good for a second hand devices, the ony issue were the screen ghosting when the devices getting hot. but it would dissapear after some minutes, i can live with that. BUT, comparing to my m9 the battery drains faster, no root option, no custom recovery or rom. so for answering your question, IF i moved from note 3 directly to G5 i would be really happy as it has more advantages. but since i got my hand on m9 first i still feel little dissapointed . i cant stop comaring 3 of them. note 3 has bigger display and spen support, m9 has the best custom rom suppot and great battery, while g5 has the most awesome camera and screen resolution :cyclops: .

Ok, first off, thanks a lot for the detailed feedback. I actually appreciate it when people put a little effort in helping others online.
I ultimately settled for a G5, since a replaceable battery is more important to me than a bigger one, and also because I could really use those extra 0.3" on the screen. Moreover, you were unlucky in getting an h860 variant, because the european h850 has some decent support over here.
Lastly, I am not getting another HTC device again, I had an HTC Desire S. Let me tell you something about that phone: you could *not* remove the battery with the device on, risking a total brick. Yup, you heard me right. A flimsy plastic clip was all that kept your precious phone from mayhem and destruction. The best part is that it was a hardware defect, obviously ineligible for warranty replacement, and I don't recall HTC ever acknowledging the issue, let alone provide the user with some kind of compensation. Also, HTC always was a pain in the ass to customize, and the HTCdev program is a joke.
Nonetheless, thanks a lot for the feedback man. Have a good one

yeep, my biggest regret were i didnt read much about lg g5, infact i read too many about it so i skip the most important things. from what i gather around the web, g5 has 2 version. G5 and g5 SE. the g5 has snap820, 4gb ram and single sim, while g5 SE had snap 625, 3GB ram and dualsim. i use 2 simcard one for main use and another for data connection. and h860 has both advantages from 2 g5 version, snap 820/4gb ram and Dualsim support. i didnt bother to check on XDA for root method as i though it just the same as samsung or HTC, even with many varian usually all of them has the same exploit. i never though i would be so wrong on my life . and for the HTC part, well what can i say, here in indonesia we didnt have official HTC service centre so if we had a malfunction devices we just need to fix it on our own . same goes to LG G5 since the only one that they sold here were g5 SE, some friend of mine already bought g5 from singapore last year and when his screen broke he sent it to LG centre but they refuse it, they said the only accept g5 SE. so i'm totally aware when i bought those devices, i cant rely on warranty or official services. and its not the first time, usually lot of devices which sold here were downgraded version comparing to international one. like
note 3 on international version they had snap801 and lte support while official one the had stupid exynoss and 3g only. same goes with Note 5 snapdragon inter vs exynoss local, and also xiaomi devices, huawei, and many other brands which i dont remember anymore. thats why, many people here usually bought new/second hand devices from another country because they want to feel the real experience while also acknowledge they cant bring it to official service centre when it broke later.
Hell no.

Considering a Moto Z......

My LG G4 is dying.
I need a Verizon based phone to work with the Verizon MVNO I contract air access from.
How does the MotoZ vzw version handle unlocked bootloader? Is it possible?
I'm real keen on custom rom usage, whats the best custom roms available for the moto Z?
Any cons I should be made aware of?
What type of sim card ? ie: nano....................
I am done with the Asian phone manufacturers, unfortunately I have had bad experience with HTC and now LG.
Paid flagship prices for crap, sorry to say. My most favored phone was a motorola flip phone, maybe I return to motorola.
ty
Motorola = Lenovo = Chinese [emoji6]
I've had the MotoZ after the LG G4. Only short time. Since one year on Galaxy S8 and happy. Maybe a LG V30 as alternative?
I cannot say anything about a Verizon phone since I have no clue if they "tainted" the Moto Z too, making it different from global variants.
As for simply being worth it:
If you are paying less than 450$, it's definitely worth it.
The phone is snappy, hysterically thin for a phone ( it's as thick as an iPhone when you put a bulky case on it, otherwise it's only 5.2mm thick ), has a good camera, a great display and you will love the UI if you're a fan of stock Android.
However, if you can pay more than 450$, consider something like a Oneplus 5.
Battery is AWFUL. The phone is mostly smooth but if you use it for prolonged periods, it heats up and then starts lagging due to throttling.
Camera is reasonable at most but the camera lens get scratched easily, so the image quality could degrade over time.
Mods are funny at some point but are extremely expensive and there are chaper alternatives that work on any device, not being necessary to have a Z phone to use them.
Fingerprint scanner works but it's not the fastest and misses sometimes, and it get's really annoying when you have to try 4 or 5 times to unlock it.
Motorola has abandoned this phone, which hasn't received a security update since December and god knows when it'll get Oreo, and even worse, god knows what sort of bugs Lenovo interns will give us when Oreo finally arrives.
Doesn't have a headphone jack.
My particular unit developed severe burn-in after only 7 months of usage, but every display is different, so your mileage may vary.
Phone is so thin that it's unconfortable to hold without a mod attatched or a case, which is a bummer because the phone is good looking without anything on it. Also slippery as hell.
There are not many developers for the Moto Z, so there isn't many custom roms available compared to Samsung or even Sony. There are some unofficial builds from big projects like Lineage but there are some bugs here and there.
So, take it with a grain of salt because this is my experience, but beware because I'm not the only one reporting those issues. Just check out Lenovo forums and see how many battery drain topics are there, which got even worse after the 7.1.1 update.
Forget those awesome flip phones Motorola once built, because that company is dead. Motorola is just a brand name now, everything is Lenovo. When you boot the Moto Z there is a big ass Lenovo logo so you don't forget it. If I were you, I would go for the OnePlus 5 . Your experience may be worse with Motorola.
The phone uses nano sim though.
Moto Z= bored device + screen burn + ugly battery life

Don't. Battery life is awful, and Motorola does not support this device any more.
Mine got broken (bluetooth died), I sent it to Motorola for repair three months ago, and they refuse to fix or refund it, despite still being under warranty.
I see a lot of salty people here.
I've had my Moto Z since October 2017. I upgraded from Nexus 5x, which got bootloop. Is it worth it?
That depends on the price. I've got mine for 350$ and I'm pretty satisfied. The battery is similar to the one I've had in 5x (needs a recharge at the end of the day). However, with Incipio power pack it lasts a full day of heavy use.
No burn-ins whatsoever.
It was lagging a little bit at the beginning, but now its really snappy, miles better than my crap Nexus. I've played Vice City quite a lot and no major throttling issues happened to me (maybe some fps drops once a while, but it's not something drastic).
Motorola still supports this phone. Fast updates are long gone from the Google days, but they're still pretty average.
I really like this phone, but if I were you I would wait a little bit more for the Nokia 7 Plus. 2018 version looks amazing.
And stay away from any LG. They can't fix bootloop problems since G4. G6 and V30 are too young to judge if they're fine. They still may bootloop in the near future.
I forgot to add: Fingerprint sucks. Nexus 5x was better in that term.
