[ROOT] based off of Super leaky brother sprint method - AT&T Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

**Sorry for the crude guide, If someone would like to rewrite it and make it more beginner friendly that would be great**
I will explain how i achieved root on my AT&T note 7 , This is based off of Super leaky brothers Sprint method found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-note-7/how-to/root-super-leaky-bros-sprint-galaxy-t3447202
files needed , Im assuming you already have samsung drivers and adb installed
1. Sprint engineering rom https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24651430732236681
2. Modified Odin (this is version I used , im sure others work fine)http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/tools/ODIN/ODIN-modified.zip
3. ATT stock rom https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24686679545610574
4. Sun7 files https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24651430732236679
process
1. Unlock developer mode , turn oem unlock and usb debugging on
2. Put Phone is download mode
3. Flash Sprint engineering rom
4. Once flash is complete and the phone reboots put it back in download mode before it boots (if not you will be waiting a while)
5. Flash all the files From the stock ATT rom except the sytem file , leave out the ap file
6. After second flash is complete wait for the phone to boot , it will take 20-30 minutes and may just sit at the samsung screen the entire time, .be patient
7. After boot is complete skip through all the setup process and enable developer mode and make sure usb debugging is on
Copied from freezas post
8: Open a command prompt where your ADB executable and sun7 folder are.
9: Verify standard root access by typing "adb shell" then "su" If successful, type "exit" twice to get back to the command prompt.
10: Push the sun7 folder to your phone by typing "adb push sun7 /data/local/tmp/su"
11: Change permissions of contents in su to 777 by typing "adb shell chmod 0777 /data/local/tmp/su/*"
12: Launch adb shell by typing "adb shell"
13: Change directory to su by typing "cd data" "cd local" "cd tmp" "cd su"
14: Gain standard root privileges by typing "su"
15: Execute the SU script by typing "./root.sh"
You should now be rooted , Everything I use appears to function as it should , I dont use samsung or android pay so i dont know about those
***none of this is my work , this was just me messing around with the work of others so if you use this then head over to there threads and give them a like or a donation and As always this is do at your own risk, Its your phone and not mine and im not responsible for it.
Im pretty sure this same method could be done with all u.s. models and there stock roms but I dont have those devices to test

Awesome, thanks for putting this together! So technically, this should work for all variants correct?

So does it haave aall Sprint bloatware since you left the sprint system file flashed?

yeah it should , I would download the stock rom for the variant your using and use them files after the Sprint rom flash and leave out the ap file, but if you used my exact method it would also work but you may lack your carrier features. but as always do at your own risk

Sweet. Thanks for your efforts. Basically use the Sprint method but reflash the BL CP and CSC from your carrier's firmware. Easy enough!

Anyone test it on verizon?

I want to know about this too. The root on the S7/S7 Edge was laggy as hell, I couldn't use it even after some workaround fixes.

I'm using this root on Sprint, and it is WAAAY better than the s7 root. No lag for me and from what I can tell, no battery or heat problems. After installing all my apps, I decided to do a quick Antutu test, and I got great results. YMMV...:silly:
Only thing I'd be concerned about is possibly losing VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. Not sure, but it seems like you'd be lucky to get those going.

Even on the Sprint thread no one has mentioned anything about performance yet. I'm surprised. Everyone is all about installing Xposed and Viper and ****, lmao

Maybe you should try flashing the CP, BL, and CSC from an official Sprint rom? That might restore Volte and wifi calling for you? Also, thanks for giving feedback on the root!

It is tough to say because the Sprint release firmware didn't even have Wi-Fi calling as an option (Sprint just flat out doesn't have VoLTE)...anyway, I won't clog up the att forum with a bunch of Sprint talk. Wish you all the best.

Stupid question guys, but:
1. Are we able to use Samsung Pay with this non-Knox tripping root method, while Rooted?
2. I assume we won't be able to keep root in the future, when Samsung releases new firmware and patches this exploit? Or does EngBoot mean we can always flash the latest system.img?
3. With this exploit in place, would you guys still consider buying the International models without warranty, but with better dev support? Thanks!

Working fine for me. Thanks!
thanks you for your work.
As a note to remind myself of how to install future updates:
Firetv: system, about, network, get IP address.
Computer: command prompt, adb connect (ip address), adb push (rom.zip or the name of the rom file) /sdcard/,
To check if the amazontv is downloading rom file: WIFI, open network and sharing center, change network adapter, WIfi, status
when it is finishes transfering (eta 10-15 mins): adb reboot recovery, connect usb keyboard, install zip, /0/, /sdcard/, (rom.ziop or the name of the rom file), restart system. Done.
Great work! Thank you. I will install this tonight. Quick question: Is it a requirement to have a fully unlocked bootloader or no?
I'm partially unlocked at the moment, but will fully unlock it if necessary. Just haven't gotten around to it.

I will hold off until there is a release that justifies the installation. There are no added benefits of this release. I was hoping Miracast from the windows PC would work. that is one big benefit for the Microsoft world.

[Guide] How to unlock WiFi Tethering on your HTC Desire 610 [Root, S-Off]

Root and S-Off Recommended
For S-Off look here then follow directions for permanent root in the development forum
1. Download a file explorer with root-browsing capabilities like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer from the Play Store
2. Using the file explorer you downloaded above, head over to /system/customize/ACC folder and open the default.XML file using any text editor.
3. Navigate to the following code near the bottom of the file:
<app name=”Tethering_provision”>
<item type=”integer”name=”TetheringGuard_rule”>3</item></app>
Notice the “3” above in bold. Change it to “0.” Save the edited text file and exit the app.
4. Reboot
Go into settings, enable WiFi Hotspot and it'll turn on. I did this on my At&t Desire 610, I assume other carriers can use the same method.
If Hotspot fails to initialize after being turned off, reboot your phone. I only came across this problem once.
Disclaimer/Piece of Mind: Most plans have data cap and tethering may and will consume data and possibly incure extra charges. I take no responsibility for what you do to your phone or consequences from said mod. :good:
Why is s off required? I'm trying to do this with my 510 and I hope the procedure is similar.

S-OFF is required to remove the write protection. I tried 5+ times to do this without S-off and every time it reverted back after rebooting. When you purchase S-OFF, it lets you save it permanently. $25 is a small price to pay to have tethering unlocked.
If you can make it work with S-on then I'll edit the OP. In my experience trying to write to the system will reboot the phone.

Let me know how it goes.
Isnt there a kernel that removed the write protect?
It doesn't work on my 510. I don't have soff, but I have a custom kernel with write protection removed, so the change persists across boot. Goodness, I'd hoped this would solve my problem.

the Jmz kernel does remove the write protection, and if you can deal with the various bugs that come along with it, than you'll be fine. Personally, I couldn't handle the periodic freezing so I ponied up the $25.

I changed it and it didnt reboot the phone but it needs reboot to stick (i think) and it doesnt stay at "0"
Can someone with jmz kernel please give it a shot? I dont use it anymore but bugs seemed to be minimal when i was running old firmware. Thanks.
$25 for this phone is a little steep. If it meant even one good custom rom id fork it over but Im thinking the price tag makes more sense for the flagship users. However, im still looking for a good reason...

Unless your S-off the changes won't stick during a reboot, I'm surprised the phone even let you get that far, as far as modifying the XML file. I'm working on a debloated ROM with this mod cooked in. Anybody want to test it for me? I'll upload it now to my drop box.

Just playing around...this does work with jmz kernel. I flashed the deodexed rom last night and its way too early but no bugs so far. Instead of kk sd fix i used twrp manager and applied the sd patch. Im also using seeder.apk (which is free right now) The rom has busybox built in so installing your own could exacerbate bugs, maybe?
Most of the bugs i experienced with the kernel were tied somehow to the audio jack. That seemed to trigger crazy behavior like auto calling, voice google searches.
Tethering is good to have but my data plan sucks. I was hoping to use it as sort of a bridge for weak wifi spots but i find the wifi on the 610 is much slower than even older devices i own.
This setup probably wont be ideal for daily use but i feel like this would be a really good phone if it had some development.
I'm running stock, rooted with Xposed. No problems here. I've read people having various issues with JMZ Kernel.
Yea this phone is slow, a good Lollipop ROM would do wonders for the 610.

If you get s-off from sunshine, I think it'll unlock and root, but I believe you need to be locked and unrooted first. I'm not s-off so not certain. Once you are s-off, the WiFi tethering is simple. The one stipulation is it costs $25--a lot IMO since we really have no development on this phone.
If you read my earlier post in this thread, I was able to enable WiFi tethering and write to sdcard with s-on by flashing the jmz and stock deodexed firmware and jmz kernel which removes write protection. Most people don't do that because lots of bugs have been reported. So if you're willing to pay, checkout sunshine installer.
Btw--its been about a week and my phone has been fine (no freezes and no erratic behavior when plugged into audio jack) Its not super fast but this phone wasn't really fast to start. Your results may differ. My setup procedure is a little different. Instead of kk sdcard fix I use twrp manager and set the patch. The rest was a lot of trial & error and I lost track of exactly how I arrived here, but its been working fine for me.
I can't buy Sunshine form root ninja!

Yeah the newest version checks for xposed and a bunch of other things. Actually a lot of people were pissed that they did this. You'd probably need to revert back to stock if you want to play. Only systemless root and xposed with magisk works for Pokemon go now.

Hello and thank you for your work with this device. Currently I am looking for a bypass for the factory reset protection on my sm t280. I have flashed the stock md5 file 3+ times attempting to do a complete data wipe and reset, and this doesnt remove the lock. Any ideas?

To FRP unlock you have to go to developer settings and switch oem unlock to false. The stock rom should have it unless you are using a carrier locked version that I a! not aware of.

I just downloaded a stock recovery for a sm t285, and was going to attempt to flash to the 280. havent yet, do you feel that would be a safe thing to attempt? not looking to brick.

FRP is specifically designed to prevent flashing if you can't login to the device. You won't be able to flash unless the person has turned off oem unlock beforehand. I am not aware of any method to bypass this on this device.
Also the T280 and T285 have slightly different hardware so using a different recovery image is not recommended. Also since both devices have a locked bootloader, I highly doubt you can even change the recoveries from stock as I would imagine samsung using different keys for both. At the worst case it still always possible to reflash them back to stock if you do want to try

And thank you so much for selling it. I don't speak enough Spanish to make the ordeal of getting one of the T285M's from so america worthwhile. I was planning on sticking with my T239M for awhile, then I saw your T285M on ebay.
I've dirty flashed jedld's T285 debloated rom, then dirty flashed his T285 tinker rom on top of that. Both onto my T285M. Working flawlessly. Wished he'd kept the mail app, but without touchwiz I guess that wasn't possible.
Something else they blocked in the kernel or with SElinux on the T285M is screen mirroring. Can only cast directly from apps.
Still I am happy overall. Now looking for a castrated version of daemonsu!

Double Aargh...salt on my wounds ttb
Now my contact in S. America will not even reply to me
Contemplating on getting the Samsung J max 7.0 dual sim...yes no U.S lte but has an 8mp camera and a flash...similar to the T285 otherwise...can't say how many times I needed the flash for photos or even if for looking at labels peering into dim areas behind a monitor or tv..maybe end up in same pickle of no root...will see (number is SM-T285YD so it is based off the T285 it seems-maybe a Latin American version soon?)
Also trying to get the T705M from another source but taking forever...low hopes think it will come through

got another one - white color ...as a gift...God Bless - great device battery life is just incredible - nothing fancy but does its job...keeping this one (had it since early November) gave up on the 705m
Is this ROM compatible with Google Safetynet? I can't seem to log into Pokemon GO since I installed Tinker edition, so I'm thinking to switch to this one instead.
Haven't tried it but it should work.
Is the root part contained in boot.img or in system.img? In other words, when using Heimdall I should flash both system.img and boot.img, isn't it?
I'm getting bootloops with CM13, Omni and I don't know how I got Tinker working, I kind of remember flashing boot.img, then wiping, then flashing system.img, then wiping again.
EDIT: got this one working too by flashing boot.img (Heimdall complains it cannot receive confirmation msg) reboot into download again, then flashing system.img (this time heimdall does reboot the phone). however, pokemon go still wont connect due to google's safetynet compliance.
I'll try flashing recovery in case it is TWRP the one clashing with Safetynet.
PD: I didn't backup stock at the beggining of the process so I'm pretty much screwed with Pokemon until I can afford a new phone. But if someone has a stock ROM for T285MUBU0API2, please ping me.
EDIT2 Got pokemon working. I reinstalled TWRP (this ROM's recovery is the stock one, of course), then flashed unSU. It removed SuperSU binary and Google SafeNet got working again. I can't believe that, after so much hours I've put into finding the best custom ROM for this crappy phone, 95% of the time was spent in trying to get Pokemon GO running. I'm close to 40, FML.

A general question about root.. Does getting root means we can switch carrier (move to att/verizon) on tmobile locked phones?

Can you elaborate by "switching carrier's?" Do you mean putting an att/Verizon sim into a T-Mobile phone? Or flashing a att/Verizon firmware to a T-Mobile phone?
If you're referring to the sim, then no. You'll have to either pay for a service to do it for you or wait for TMobile to unlock it for you.

Yes I mean using a SIM from a different provider.
Thanks for the info!
Google what Root means, It does not unlock SIM, it just allows for customization

and it allows you (the one plopping down a grand for this device) to remove all the CRAP that Samsung and your carrier thought it would be in THEIR best interest to put on your phone.
Since samfail doesnt trip knox (afaik) is it possible to unroot and use samsung pay again? Or is that gone regardless?

If you flash back to stock, Samsung Pay works fine since we never tripped Knox.

Thanks for the reply, I have tried secure settings and it did not work. I am unsure how to make Tasker add a toggle. I remember the note 5 we had to add MobileData line some where in csc or something.

I thought T-Mobo's bootloaders were unlocked by default (as is the T-Mobo's Note 5)?
NP
Piezan, sorry I was vague.Secure Settings has a Tasker plugin that under the right conditions allows you to either build a Tasker Profile ( voice, geofence or whatever ) to toggle Data or straight up make a widget for it...I remember on my Nexus 5 I had a Tasker Profile that as soon as I was about 50 feet from the house I would enter an AutoLocation Geofence I had set (Home) thus toggling my Data in favor of the home WiFi. The main reason I suggested it is that it requires root (for the SS part).
I guess I'll ask here.
When rooted is the 80% limit ,actual or perceived ? I keep reading it's still 100pct just reporting 80.
What exactly breaks or stops working. I know about Android and Samsung pay. But I've read Samsung health which is mind boggling that root would have anything to do with a heart rate sensor.
Lastly my main desire is for one click video download ,and Instagram downloads of stories or vids etc. These are Xposed dependent. Would I be able to use Xposed with samfail. (If not any non root alternatives?)
Fastboot and Download mode
I'm on rooted note 8 and booting into Download mode every time to charge the phone to 100% instead of 80%. Using hardware keys to get back to OS every time is uncomfortable and takes too long. Easiest way I know is to do "fastboot reboot" from PC, while the phone connected via USB. However, I cant get my PC to recognize the phone while it is in Download mode - "fastboot devices" lists nothing, and if I try "fastboot reboot" the command prompt just sits on < waiting for device >.
Does anyone know what note 8 specific drivers for Windows 10 x64 need to be installed, or what else to do to make fastboot recognize connected phone in Download mode?
I know the same feeling with the fastboot I can't seem to figure it out. I usually use Minimal ADB and Fastboot and it's worked on most every modern droid I've ever owned I don't see why the Note 8 is so finicky with it. I had no problems with it and my V20.
I know that these things take time, but does anyone have any idea if anyone is working on root for the new updated bootloader? I know that the new bootloader that came with last update broke root but I have not heard or seen anything. I haven't updated but would like to know. ????

[ROM][G950U/G955U]Pixelish S9 ROM - Custom System for Snapdragon S8/+

Introducing the first Oreo ROM for the S8 and S8+, its basic don't complain.
First of all, before you go any lower read this:
THIS IS NOT ROOT! This is a custom system image that I modded and allows me to add or remove files and still have it boot and keep Knox intact along with Saftey Net. Unless you mess with the build.prop device stuff, Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, and Google Pay should all work.
Second, If you break your phone or mess up and it boot loops, just flash a stock image and start over. Don't come here crying over it not working because these do work and I have had testers use them and run this.
Third, this is pixelish because all I did was add the pixel launcher and a couple pixel files along with S9+ messenger. This is more of an open project.
Forth, If you are a dev interesting and making your own custom system image, message me and I will tell you the ways of this magic.
NOW FOR THE GOOD PART!
This ROM currently contains the stock Pixel launcher, a couple new /etc/sysconfig pixel files, and the S9 messenger. Knox still works and so does Saftey Net. This has yet to be debloated.
To install it:
1. Go to download mode and flash the file install BL.tar with Modded Odin, all files will be linked in like post 2 or 3, I don't know.
2. Reboot back into download and flash the system.tar (names may vary) in the AP slot with the options reparation and NAND erase all selected, you will also need to use the pit file there. This step will say fail in Odin but that's good.
3. Reboot BACK to download mode and flash the CRB9 AP, BL, and CP. In between the system flashing and this step, hit reset at the bottom of Odin to reset the options.
4. Let the phone reboot. It will boot loop, that's good. Now go to recovery and let this boot loop. It will say something about a cache error, that's perfect.
5. From recovery go to download mode, it might be difficult and you may get to upload mode, just keep holding the keys until you get there. Now flash the CSC file.
6. After flashing CSC you should be in recovery, now clear data and cache. Hit reboot the system or whatever and you should be good!
7. Enjoy whatever is in the ROM because I assume some people are going to link back here at some point.
THANKS to @me2151 for finding this and telling me how to do it and such

How to mod it yourself!
This is a little thing on how to mod it yourself.
You need to download the system for the device, just use the one I have above. Then you need to mount it in Linux using the command sudo mount -o loop system.img.ext4 folder name. This should mount as an r/w. I did it in Kali Linux and didn't have issues while Ubuntu did some funky stuff. Then you mod the systems normally like making a ROM. Whenever you mod something you need to set the proper permissions with chmod and context with sudo setfattr -n security.selinux -v ubject_r:system_file:s0 filename. You might need to install attr to get it. Then once you're done, unmount with sudo umount folder name and then add it to a .tar file without any compression and flash it in Odin like the instructions. Just use your system instead of mine. If you make it and post it, just credit me2151 and me (mweinbach).
Told yall i was sitting on it til oreo release

Thanks a lot! Can you post how to create a custom rom on here for us devs?
I know this rom is for Snapdragon but is there any chance that your methods would apply to exynos firmware too? A custom non-knox tripping rom would be great
Nice work anyway!

What's the main difference between this and the Stock Samsung ROM? Does it have bloatwares if I install on my AT&T variant? I'm sorry, I'm asking since it's not listed on the first post exactly aside from a couple of things you mentioned.

I can set perms, I am going to leave that to a better ROM dev who understands it more. I would probably kill it.
Hey @mweinbach, thanks for taking the time to make this rom! I have a quick question. I have an S8 and am currently running PartCyborgRom (build AQI6). Can I just flash the firmware and system files without doing anything else beforehand? If not, what steps should I take before installing this?
