[How to] Enable Wi-Fi Hotspot - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I have been reading recently about people wanting to know how to enable a wi-fi hotspot from their Axon 7 without being prompted from their provider (T-Mobile, AT&T, etc.) to change/upgrade their current data plans. Well, today I will give you a step by step guideline on how to bypass this. Please note, though, that your device must be rooted. In addition, I strongly recommend that you do a backup of your device just in case something goes wrong.
To begin, download the following apps to make this process as painless as possible Material Terminal and BuildProp Editor.
1. Launch the BuildProp Editor app and tap the menu icon (the 3 vertical dots) found on the top right of your screen. When the dialog box appears, tap on + New.
2. When the + New system property dialog box appears, under the first subheading Name type in the following: net.tethering.noprovisioning. In the next subheading named Value, type in the following: true. Once completed, press SAVE. You may be prompted to give BuildProp Editor root access. Choose GRANT and exit the app.
3. Launch the Material Terminal app.
4. In the first command line, type su and then tap enter to give it root access.
5. When the next command line appears below, type settings put global tether_dun_required 0 and then tap enter. Please note that there must be a space between the words settings and put, put and global, global and tether and required and 0. You will not believe how many people type this all as one word.
6. Exit the Material Terminal app and reboot your device. If the steps were followed carefully, you should now be able to use your device as a wi-fi hotspot without being prompted on your connecting devices to change/upgrade your data. This method should also work on other android devices.
Enjoy!

My device (A2017U) isn't rooted. It uses Cricket (AT&T) MVNO. I can use mobile hotspot without any modifications. I just assumed everyone else could, too.

Most on this phone aren't rooted.

That's okay. This only applies to those who are rooted and interested in doing this. I just thought I would help out.

If not mistaken this method is so instead using hotspot data which is very limited (in my case I have 7gb) you use your normal data (I have unlimited).

I don't have any hotspot data, though. Still works.

My tethering works out of the box on unlimited Verizon's data plan. I thought they all worked.

I just want to make the following clear: This post ONLY applies to those who are not able to use their Wi-Fi hotspot because they are prompted by their service providers to change/upgrade their data plan once they are tethering. If you have unlimited data or simply have no problem connecting to your hotspot then that's great! I am simply trying to reach out to those have been asking for a solution.

Thanks, my unlimited att ipad plan now tethers, it was bocked before doing the mod. The Axon7 was one of the few devices that was blocking it, Windows Phone was the other device that blocked it.

Thanks for this info. I'm on Cricket as well and appreciate the heads up. My Axon 7 should arrive from Swappa this week.

This was a concern for me buying this phone. I have always had Google phones which are easy to root and modify. I need to upgrade my Nexus 5 and the new Pixel was announced today but it's too expensive for me. I hope this works when I get my phone in a couple of days. How did you guys root? Did you unlock your bootloader or no?

You can manage to get root with or without Unlock Bootloader, i just rather unlock and skip all the hassle when flashing files hehehe.
Using @tenfar tool is the way to start you journey for root/Unlocking Bootloader.

I'd hate to throw away the warranty. My luck I'd crack my screen right after unlocking the bootloader... Which shouldn't have anything to do with one another but ZTE won't honor hardware warranties after it's been software unlocked

you warranty won't be touch at all, there is no way for ZTE to know if you are Unlock or not via the methods posted here in XDA unless you go official way which is not even available and the new method ZTE is working on will be different from the previous one.
If my guess is correct with the new Official Unlocking method Warranty won't be voided if is Hardware defects, Water Damage will have the deductible, but don't quote me on that.

On T-Mobile on my Nexus 5 I had to do that tether_dun_required setting.
I forget whether I needed root for that or not.

Hello still no go. Devices see my phone. Just can't get past obtaining IP address. Ran across this
#!/system/bin/sh
iptables -I FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/16 -j ACCEPT
iptables -P FORWARD DROP iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/16 -j MASQUERADE
Guy wrote a script for Tasker. Can I use these in terminal to accomplish other devices obtaining my ip address when tethering? Devices can see my phone but not connect.
Thanks in advance

I literally use 100gb monthly as in Poland LTE is free. Phone works as router for me all the time. Never been prompted with any message.

If you don't mind telling me, what process is the one required so that the phone recognizes SIMS from other companies? Flashing? Sorry for the amateur question.
I have no idea. There isn't anything to flash. No roms, no kernels, no recoveries no nothing. There appears to be zero interest in this variant by the dev community.

Thanks for the information fellas. So basically we have to wait until someone with the knowledge can extract those files (Roms, kernels, recoveries).
By some of the comments i've seen here, i get the impression that only the high-end phones are the ones that the community gets behind? How unfortunate if true.
By the way i saw in a different post someone uploaded a Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/rom-download-sm-s920l-straight-talk-usa-t3265004/page2
Yes, and that ROM will turn your Grand Prime into a Core Prime (Franken Prime) with lots of things not working. There are no stock roms available for this variant.

MetroPCS & T-Mobile LG Leon STABLE Root (WORKS EVERY TIME 100%)

I am making this tutorial as I have had multiple versions of the LG LTE Leon and have used many firmware versions. I have created a stable method that has the least issues as I have had trouble with the latest firmware (MS34510f) disabling my root privileges. I have created a MEGA account specifically for all of the files necessary to complete this operation and have your device run smoothly. So, please follow my instructions exactly as stated and you should not have any issues. THIS PROCESS WILL REMOVE ALL DATA NOT SYNCED, DO READ BELOW NOTES IT IS VERY BENEFICIAL
Important Notes:
+This process will wipe all data that is not synced, it is important to ensure that no newer LG process are still on the device. Some might argue to leave data, to that I say good luck keeping your root and tethering without the device becoming suspiciously unstable.
+ I am not GUARANTEEING this will work on every model, but I have had an extremely high success rate with all Leon versions.
+ In this tutorial the process in which I remove Kingroot and replace it with SuperSu is for system stability. I find that most root functions I use seem to not work properly. (Wifi Tether Router and many others). So, I do recommend doing so.
+After the new OS is installed a MetroPCS splash screen will appear even if you do have T-Mobile. DO NOT BE ALARMED this firmware will not limit any functionality you had before, it will even help with tethering functionality.
Tutorial:
Let's Begin.
1. Download the link posted to obtain required files for this tutorial
Link: https://mega.nz/#F!PM4CQRqb!92kgIOnD0ZBY-8HVbtTwGQ
2. Open up LGFlashTool2014.exe
Begin by copying settings posted below, then click "normal flash"
3. Next click the "START" button
4. At this time, I recommend you verify all sync settings are to your liking and that all personal info needed is backed up
a. You have the option to throw all of your personal documents/pictures onto your SD card and removing it appropriately
(Go to: Settings - Storage - [scroll down to] Unmount SD card)
b. Next, navigate to Settings -Backup & reset [leave options default; both checked off] - Factory data reset - reset phone
c. Once reset it will most likely reboot, wipe, and then back to a OS. Now, you will Power Off entirely (make sure it is not plugged in so it will not go to charging mode)
d. Here is where we will hold down the Volume Up button with the phone unplugged from your PC. Then you must plug the USB into your phone.
e. A black screen with white text should post onto your screen, here we will continue to step 6
note: If this screen does not appear please power off and retry step d.
6. Next, follow the posted settings. Make sure to click the "Clear phone Software update Registry" button Then click "OK"
7. A new screen will arrive, and should begin the firmware download process. At this time it will take a few minute to load and should reboot to a fresh OS.
8. With the new OS in place, you can either follow the setup tutorial now or skip through for a later setup.
note: you can now insert your SD card
9. In the tools folder of the folder you downloaded copy the "mrw" folder to the Main Storage folder of your phone
10. Now copy the Kingroot apk to your downloads folder located on the main storage.
11. Go to Settings - About Phone - Software Info
At this time click the build number box a few times until it says you are a developer
12. Hit back until you are at the Setting menu, click on Developer options and check off "Stay Awake" and "Enable OEM Unlock" as well as "USB Debugging"
13. You may now run Kingroot, if it does not install root the first time it should flawlessly install the next.
14. After root is obtained, please go to your home screen and click the "Google Search" widget. Press Update Google Services and let it run. After that has been updated search for terminal emulator and install.
note: If the Play Store is acting fishy and force closing while typing in the search bar do not fret it will be fixed after reboot in further instruction
as an allternative use the jackpal.androidterm-1.0.70-71-minAPI4.apk provided in the "tools" folder
15. Open terminal and in a new window type: Su
16. Allow root usage and at this time type: sh /storage/emulated/0/mrw/root.sh
17. It will run with a few failed messages do not worry it should open SuperSu momentarily
18. Once SuperSu opens up allow it to update binaries using the "NORMAL" option but DO NOT REBOOT YET
19. At this time either download TWRP Manager from the play store or alternatively use the com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager-7.5.1.3-82-minAPI11.apk provided in the tools folder
20. Install and open TWRP Manager. Once opened click on device name and scroll until you see "LG Leon LTE (c50)"
a. Click on Recovery Version to Install and select "twrp-2.8.7.0-c50.img"
b. next click "Install Recovery" and if prompted for verification of install path and for install version select "YES" & "NORMAL"
21. After the TWRP setup is complete it may prompt you to reboot, if not click the arrow in the top left of the TWRP Manager screen and scroll down to "Reboot" and select "Reboot device"
22. After Reboot click TWRP Manager and verify a SuperSu prompt comes up if it hasn't already before the boot
At this point the device should be running smoothly. From here I prefer to do the following steps.
My Personal Setup after new install:
+Personally I like to install use a Root Uninstaller (I use 3C Toolbox Pro) and Uninstall and Backup all MetroPCS BloatWare including the Metro Browser.
+I also access the Hidden Menu by using the Dialer and Dial "2776348*#*"
- I scroll down to ApnUnlock and click to "Unlock APN"
- Then I navigate to Settings -Tethering & networks - Mobile Networks (I check off roaming data) - Access point names
--I then select the top APN and edit APN Type to: default, supl, mms, dun
---I click save from the top right selection, then turn on and off airplane mode
+If you are and Xposed user download "xposed-v79-sdk22-arm.zip","xposed-uninstaller-20150831-arm.zip", and "XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk" from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
-install the Xposed Installer, then Go to TWRP Manager, use reboot to recovery and from there click install and navigate to the "xposed-v79-sdk22-arm.zip" and install and reboot, it will reboot with a installing screen before your home screen, takes 5 minutes.
+I also use this AMAZING app "Wifi Tether Router", it is the only tethering app I use that works consistently (if you have an unlimited data plan). I get 30mbps up and down, playing many multiplayer games off my PC and PS4 averaging ping as low as 30 ! Setting I use for our device are in a post I created here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/leon/help/unlimited-metropcs-t-mobile-tether-t3290180

Apologies for the late response, I never received a notification of your posting. I would not recommend that as I believe the H340 has a different "radio" driver or cellular chip, If I'm not mistaken the H340 isn't even LTE, the H345 is. In that case it may be possible. One thing I suggest doing before wasting your time in using any other ROM is googling H345 vs Ms345, typically the phonemore.com results will provide you with an abundance of hardware specs and let you know if they're different! Just be weary of the newest MS34510f_00.KDZ firmware I believe it has an active unroot process I've had some stability issues. I am using MS34510D_00.KDZ for months and have had no issues whatsoever! Again, I'm sorry I got back to you so late, let me know how everything goes!

After going all the way through this guide with a T-Mobile Leon, I do indeed have a Metro PCS ROM and root, which is great! Unfortunately, it also refuses to acknowledge my T-Mobile SIM. In fairness, I did not even insert a SIM for the first time (just got the phone) until the end of the process, but it shows as carrier locked which is significantly less than useful. I'll flash back to a TMO rom and put the SIM in to double check, but it's quite a bummer. Great job on the guide otherwise, though! It definitely did what it says on the tin; I have root and apart from the SIM lock which may be my fault somehow it works great.
Hey bud those links are no longer valid know where i can get them?

Activate Tethering on rooted phone

For anybody that cannot get tethering working on your phone, follow these steps. This is for stock rooted 6.0.1 roms. May not work on "n" preview.
1. Edit build prop and add the following line
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
2. Download terminal emulator from play store. Open terminal emulator and type in "su" without the " marks and press enter. Grant terminal emulator super user privileges. Next, type the following line into emulator.
put settings global tether_dun_required 0
Press enter, it will pause for a second and then return to command line. Close out terminal emulator.
3. Reboot phone and you should be good to go. I have to do all this to get it working on Sprint.

I have read it works out of the box as well. Then you ask more questions and find out they have tethering included in there plan in some capacity.

[TUTORIAL][Tethering]+[Android Pay] How to have your Nougat, and eat it too!

Dupe from N6 forums for all you 6P junkies.
Obviously I'm not responsible for your mom exploding or your phone disowning you, but.....
I got tethering and Android Pay working on stock Nougat - that's Android N, folks - on a Nexus.
(confirmed will work on Marshmallow and up on 5, 5x, 6, 6p...etc.)
Thanks to @Chainfire, @ManHands and @interloper, and you!
click thanks if this helps, or buy me a beer or something.
prerequisites:
working adb and fastboot (from platform-tools in the Android SDK if you don't know where to find it)
twrp .img for your device
latest stable systemless supersu
1. be on Marshmallow or Nougat obviously
2. flash twrp
(volume down + power on nexus gets you into bootloader, then after flashing recovery, use volume buttons to scroll and power button to select recovery mode)
3. flash systemless root while booted into twrp (unsure if .supersu SYSTEMLESS=true in /data is still needed, but can't hurt - mine is still there from earlier.)
4. while still in twrp, go to mount and check system. Make sure you allow changes.
5. from your computer, do this
Code:
adb shell
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
6. reboot into Android.
7. Install Terminal Emulator from the Play Store.
8. Launch it, and in Terminal Emulator, do this
Code:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit
9. go into Supersu, expert, scroll to the bottom and hit full unroot. No, you don't want it to patch you back to the stock boot image or recovery*. If it hangs, just reboot and try doing it again.
10. ????
11. Profit! You should have tethering unlocked, be unrooted, and have full Android Pay goodness working.
To take an OTA, do this, because Flashfire gets confused after you've done build.prop edits -
1. go to About Phone, scroll down. Find your build number.
2. download that Nexus Factory Image.
3. Unzip it all. ALL OF IT.
4. Make sure you have Android SDK & platform-tools (or just a working Fastboot and ADB)
5. just flash boot, system, and recovery - you can now OTA with no problems. Then repeat the above guide on your new OTA. Confirmed working 10 minutes ago, OTA'ing from Marshmallow to Nougat and then getting tethering working again
ALTERNATE IF YOU PREFER FLASHFIRE:
All the above steps, but you only have to flash the System image to fix the build.prop hash fail then flashfire should work for you. Wouldn't necessarily recommend upgrading version numbers (6.0.1 to 7.0.0) with Flashfire, but who knows, it might work great! Chainfire is a wizard.
*you can do this if you want, but when I let it patch my boot image I got the dreaded "device corrupt!!!!1" message at boot. Did not try letting it flash stock recovery image.
What if tethering already works on my N device? I haven't yet seen an N device failing to tether...

Then you don't need to apply the tethering tweak. Android allows you to tether just fine. The issue lies with certain carriers that charge extra for tethering. By default, Android allows the carriers to check to see if you're tethering and this is what this tweak changes.
I was also able to get ad blocking working using AdAway, on a one time host name update basis. SafetyNet check passes and Android Pay works. To enable this:
1. Prior to Step 9 above, Download and install the AdAway apk. It is available here: https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway
2. Go into the AdAway settings, Under "Target hosts file" select /data/data/hosts.
3. Enable Ad Blocking. Adaway will complain about not being able to create the symlink. To overcome this, I made /system read/write in Root Explorer, then created it manually in terminal:
Code:
su
ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts
4. Reboot. Go into AdAway and verify it is enabled.
5. Proceed with step 9 above. Make sure you say no to patching back to the stock boot image or recovery.
After Reboot You'll be unrooted with a host name ad blocker and working Android Pay. Worked for me anyway...YMMV. I will probably try and keep /data/data/hosts updated manually.
With the tethering mods t mobile still sees that I'm tethering and slotted my tethering speeds to a crawl after 5gb. Any way around this?

So this will allow me to get around Cricket's tethering ban (or rather, lack of support for the N6P in particular)?
Anyone confirm this works for Verizon / UDP?

I'm on Android N and have been since the dev previews. I've never seen trouble with tethering... I'm on vzw UDP.

Reactivation Lock work around

Hello, i found a gear fit2 while out jogging, advertised to try find the owner and no one replied, so now i have this unit ....i did a factory reset and of course now the activation lock is on by the original owner. Is there a way of resetting this so i can use it? Is it a firmware installation process i need to do to solve this? or do i just throw it in the rubbish bin?
Thanks in advance for any help.
same issue when bought a Gear S2 on ebay. Returned the watch, can not do anything to remove activation lock easily.
For Gear S2 there is a guy wich can unlock with remote PC connection and it ask $45 (search youtube for Gear S2 activation lock).
I BOUGHT THE FILES. once i have done the process and check it works i will post the links here for free. if someone can help me creating the tutorial that will be nice (im lazzy) will hit with news soon as i have them

Hi did you ever finish? I would be happy to pay you some$ for the files. I'd rather pay you than one of these jerks trying to extort money from people on youtube.
So it's not hard to put the thing into download mode wireless, and connect to it over wifi with my computer. the rest of the process and the files though, I don't have.
Thanks
I paid
I paid 30usd and he unlocked it for me. It works great. 1hr.
What ADB Commands are Needed?
Getting the files is not a big deal, it's what you do once you have them that matters. The part that's missing that all the Shady greedy unlock service providers try to hide from you when they do the removal process, are the ADB Commands they use to remove the activation lock.
Basically they use net Odin and recovery wireless download mode (AP) to flash firmware revision that lets you enter developer mode and enable ADB, and then ADB into the Gear Fit 2 and remove the lock via ADB command, while they have Echo off to hide what they're doing in the command window.
after it's done and you reboot, you net Odin flash to regular retail firmware. And you're done
Does anyone know the ADB Commands are once the Fit 2 is connected, to remove activation lock?
Could be common to what is done for Samsung's other Tizen smart watches.

Do you still have the steps? Other than the files what are the ADB Commands once connected? Thanks
Steps for everyone else since the OP seems to have disappeared. Here is the basics, what we're missing are the ADB commands to remove the actual protection. Someone can fill in the blank please since I saw everything but those commands (they were hidden)
1. Download Net Odin and install. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1...WhHTzFLNHhTbUk - Also have ADB installed on your computer. Minimal ADB and Fastboot is one package you can use for this.
2. Also youll need to download a gear fit 2 factory diagnostic? firmware here ver U1DQH1 works - http://www.gsm-file.com/files/factorysw-combination-file-6378 . And a set of normal firmware. Such as from here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1...Wp6MnNsWHpLelE
3. Hold power down on gear fit 2 until you see rebooting in blue, while it says that hit power button 2-3 times to get to bootloader menu. use power to move to Download (wireless) and hold power down to select. as soon as it enters Download wireless mode, hit power twice quickly to change to AP mode.
4. Run Net Odin and leave it running. Then go to your wireless settings and connect to the now-visible Gear Fit 2. After a few minutes, Net Odin should show an IP address in the box on the left.
5. Click the AP button in Net Odin and load the unzipped combination FTMA file you downloaded above. Hit Start and flash it. Once done, Fit 2 will reboot to a screen with yellow diagnostic info. Hit Power, settings, connection, wifi, turn it on, then connect to your wireless internet connection.
6. Once connected, then touch that network connection in the Fit 2 connection list to open up details, and note the ip address (example: 192.168.201.12).
7. Hit back button to go back into settings, then Gear Info, then enable developer mode (this enables ADB), then hit back to back out of settings menu
8. Open up a command prompt window in the directory where you have adb.exe, and type adb connect IPADDRESS:26101
- note IPADDRESS is your Ip address you noted above, and the :26101 is a port number. So using above example, I would type:
adb connect 192.168.201.12:26101
9. Once connected, type adb devices and you should see it listed.
10. THIS IS THE MISSING STEP - here are the ADB commands to remove the activation lock settings/flags. SOMEONE PLEASE FILL THIS IN
11. Once step 10 is done, hold power to reboot your Fit 2 (it's ready to be flashed with retail firmware), and just like before, but it into Download wireless mode, and AP mode.
-to check if the lock is removed, you can instead first select download mode (USB) instead of wireless, and see if it says ACTIVATION LOCKFF to confirm/doublecheck
12. In Net Odin take your unzipped retail firmware files and place each file as named in filenames, in the appropriate slots for AP, CSC, and BL. Hit Start to flash.
13. Once done and rebooted, should be clean and good to go.
These steps should pretty much encapsulate the process of what these guys are doing via Teamviewer, it's the ADB steps we are missing. Hopefully there's someone out there not trying to profit off of everyone whos nice enough to help us fill that part in. Thanks.
Thanks PaulieP for the tutorial... I need this but your files on drive are 404, can you add shared link please
I just found a gear fit2 on my bike ride this morning. I'd be pretty upset if I lost this myself so I wanted to see what my options are for returning it to its owner. With technology today, I'd assume that there's gotta be some way to find the owner of a device...
Does anyone have any ideas

Guess they pulled the files but it doesn't matter, there are a lot of places to download Net Odin. For the factory firmware you can also get it from the other site (gsm-files).
I want to reiterate though that those files are useless in removing activation lock unless we have the ADB commands the unlockers use - as mentioned in the missing step 10 of the tutorial.

They do it exactly the way I outlined in the tutorial / step-by-step, that is the only way any of them that offer paid services do it.
Again, the only way we are able to do it ourselves, is if someone fills in the missing ADB commands for us that these unlockers keep hidden when they are connected via Teamviewer.
The files will not help you without this information above, there is no bypass without those ADB commands to remove the reactivation lock from a Samsung Tizen device.

I understand but dis you download a factory diagnostic firmware ? I want to try
so I might be doing the youtube activation removal process for the gear fit 2 that I found on my bike ride. so far I've read prices ranging form $30-$45. Does anyone know what's the lowest price paid for this "service"?
second. I'm not totally clear on how the process works but I assume that someone remotely connects to my machine, with the watch connected, and runs some unknown adb commands on my system. This leads me to my second question. If I pay for this service, is there any way to capture the keystrokes by using some sort of key logger?
If anyone can help me out with finding this information, I'll gladly post the adb commands for anyone to use

The process works exactly how I outlined in my step by step a few posts back.
The missing part are the ADB commands which are hidden valley the use of Echo Off in the command window .
You will need some sort of keylogger or capture that will record even keystrokes in a command prompt window with Echo Off.

I found a few options. I'm not sure how to test to see if any of these will work: https://www.raymond.cc/blog/free-and-simple-keylogger-to-monitor-keystrokes-in-windows/
