Longest possible Wi-Fi supplicant scan interval? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Wi-Fi is scanning constantly when already contacted to my home network successfully.
It is killing my battery. Visible difference with Wi-Fi on vs off in the battery graph
I have many things hibernated.
So I'm reading about this interval, wondering what the longest possible interval is as I turn off and on Wi-Fi manually, and I'd like to save my battery juice. Even idle but on Wi-Fi there's a big difference!
I'm on a rooted Samsung Galaxy s5 neo
And yes I've got it set to off already for it scanning even when Wi-Fi is set to off for Google networks.
Help?

Does WiFi not kill anyone else's battery? Orrr... ?

For being the third Google result when searching for "wifi supplicant scan interval", this thread's lack of feedback is remarkable. I was wondering the same. I've now set it it to 600 because I'm really not that dependant on WiFi since I have a 4GB data plan. I don't mind if it takes a while to connect when I get home and with this setting it'll only check for a connection 50 to 60 times a day (during the 9 hours I'm away from home) but still enough when connected, I don't need updates to be more frequent than 10 minutes. We'll see how that goes.
Did you eventually end up altering it, @Pawprints1986 (look at that, we're from the same year!)? If so, what were your experiences?

I actually haven't altered anything. I don't have the supplicant line already in my build prop and I'm not sure where to put it or which value to use, or if it would work.
I tried adding a line into my s2 build prop but it didn't seem to actually respond to it, so I must have done something wrong, still searches every 2 seconds.

I tried 720 Supplicant WiFi Interval and I have low issues. The signal to find new WiFi is still easy to get, albeit some waiting a little bit but saved a tremendous amount of battery.
I also disabled WiFi Scan completely and not know how I did it until just recently by using AppOpsXposed and disabling Location on settings. That stops WiFi Scan completely and only allows you to connect to your WiFi routers that you already connected to.

How would you force Android to scan for new wifi network manually? With that, we could have the best of the two world - long battery and fast switching when you need it.

constant data connection

so I know theres already a dead thread on this....but it got no where.
So here goes, my x10(both on 1.6 and 2.1) seems to ALWAYS maintain a data connection whether it be wifi or hsdpa. This occurs with every running app/service disabled background data off etc etc. The only solution ive found is to switch off both wifi and toggle the apn/data connections off. I'd rather not have to do this as realistically I'll end up forgetting to toggle them off.
Shouldn't android simply connect on demand rather than maintaining the connection constantly?
and before anyone says it, it's not the data consumption im frustrated with...it's the unnecessary battery drain.
Bump....

Android keeps an active connection for things like:
1) syncing contacts & email
2) the ability to use Gtalk
Have you actually checked how little the active connection uses (not much)
constantly maintaining a data connection does indeed drain the battery in comparison to not keeping one. I assume the 'how little' it drains is based on that half assed percentage indicator android gives us?
If you actually read the first post you'd see that I'm specifically interested in having the connection on demand. If I'm not syncing my email or contacts at the time why on earth should it be maintaining a connection.
i had a hd2 it also had a constant connection.but on wm there is an app which turns off the connection and turns it on When needed.
isnt there an apps like that on android.
just use the APN On/Off widget and put it on your home screen, quick and easy and turns on/off with one press

[Q] Wifi icon gray, Talk not working ... NOT A WIFI ISSUE THREAD!

So I picked up a Prime today (running 4.0.3), and I'm having a weird issue... I can connect just fine to wifi, everything works properly, except two things:
- My wifi icon is gray. Always. Regardless of where I am, the network I'm connected to, etc.
- Talk doesn't connect. The error is "Connection interrupted -- status updates temporarily unavailable"
I have cleared Market and Talk data. I have removed and re-added my Google account. I don't have PDANet or any other tethering software. I've checked my wifi connection to make sure there is no proxy or anything. My speed is just fine! I've disabled/reenabled Background Sync. Syncs on the Google account work just fine.
I'm at a loss here... HALP?
I'm having this problem too.. did you ever find a solution? anybody else?
Mine does that when Im too far away from the router but it goes blue when i get closer.

I ended up turning off wifi, deleting the files in /system/etc/wifi, and rebooting. Had to re setup my wifi connections, but somehow in restoring a backup (or the ICS upgrade) the saved profiles must have gotten corrupted...

I'm having a similar problem. My icon starts out blue and everything works fine, but then after letting it sit for a while, my icon turns greay. Have not been able to figure it out yet. Pretty frustrating to set your tablet down and 15 minutes later have it stop getting notifications because it's disconnected itself or whatever it is when the icon turns grey.
I have my wifi settings set to always remain on while sleeping.

I tried but didn't work. I think we had different issues. It didn't sound like you could get a connection at all, while I get a connection that goes bad after the tablet has been idle for a while. Turning off/on wifi allows me to reconnect.
My android devices do this typically due to the firewall settings on whatever I am connected to, my wireless at work or example.

That is my assumption as well. I have the same issue but i figured it out. Its all you r wireless settings on the router. I have changed the broadcasting channel and since no more gray antennas. Its all i guess channel interference.

Yeah, different issue. I actually had no problems ever connecting, it just wouldn't sync properly with Google's servers...

I've had that happen before, but in this case it was a constant 100% of the time thing, regardless of firewalls/connection/etc. Just something weird with the wifi profile on the device. I'm more convinced it had to do with restoring HC data after being upgraded to ICS.

I always wondered why my cell phone did the same thing, and in my searches, gray just means that it's not connected to Google's sync service. Now, while I agree with that to an extent.... I too have noticed on my cell phone and Prime (when tethered to my cell), that if either end is gray, I have non-functioning internet. This even happens if I have full bars and HSPA for my data connection. I personally have never noticed this on any of the 3 wireless home routers that I've connected to, however.

Same experience here. Grey typically means you have internet but no google services, but on my prime grey means no internet at all.
I've managed to get my wifi connection stable by using an app in the market called Wifi Keep Alive. I'm not sure if this app has any impact on battery draw in sleep mode, but I didn't notice much of a change after installing it. I left my Prime on all night last night which has always caused the grey icon, but my icon was still blue this morning and internet was functioning

[Q] Turn off background data if wifi off?

Hi,
Is there an app, script or something (which MUST be lightweight for RAM and battery) that would turn off background data when wifi is off?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk
If you enabled background data at any point, you would know that 3G and 2G networks are only used when wifi is not connected. By turning it off when wifi is off would effectively make your data connection and plan redudant.
Disabling background data while is not on WiFi
Actualy, this is not a bad and dum question, these days, that many people have limited data, I really don't want my apps and other stuff on the background access the interent and I prefer these to get done on wifi, specialy market which I really don't want it to access the internet and check for updates while I'm driving, I would like this to get done when I'm on wifi, I noticed that my phone used 10 MB / day even if I don't use it myself.
please let me know if such a app exist
You can use DroidWall to get an exhaustive control over apps. Really easy to use, and you can decide app by app if they can get internet acces on 3g, wifi, 3g and wifi or not at all.

SORRY IGNORE ABOVE!! That is not what you're asking for. But you can use CPU tuner for that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.amana.android.cputuner&hl=en
Go to wireless
Then scroll down and last one choose
Then untick the one wich is ticked

I've tried each of these suggested options, but none of these have I found satisfactory.
The problem is that one wants to be able to retrieve and send MMS messages, without other data being exchanged (at least in my contract in Sweden, MMS messages are included in the contract, and is not counted as regular data. I'm guessing your contract is under the same premises...). So that rules out the option os switching off the 3G network.
Next, the problem with DroidWall in this situation, is that there is a 0.4kb data leak through the firewall every time the Wi-Fi successfully connects to a wireless network. Don't ask me how or why (I used two or three different apps to ensure that this was the case). Even if this data amount was fairly small, I wasn't satisfied, since I pay a correlating fee for every byte sent or recieved by my phone, and I wanted all other data stopped.
The solution I finally came to was simpler than I imagined. I altered the API (or APN) settings in the "mobile networks" menu found in the network settings in the device menu. I simply accessed the settings for my account and changed API-type (APN-type), so that it only said "MMS" (erase "default" and "supl"). The only flaw with this option is that one has to fill out "default" in this Space again if one actually desires to use 3G data for some reason. Anyway, this has worked solidly for me for a couple of months (no data leaks).
Hope this helps you!
Sincerely, yitzhaq

[Q] Internet stopped working on wifi on .73 SG build

This is most bizzare. My internet on wifi was working fine until last night, but it is not working any longer. Works fine on 3G though. On wifi I am able to see connected devices on the local network and play files off my HTPC but internet browsing, google play store or anything that uses internet has stopped working and times out. All other wifi devices in my home are fine. I have reset the wifi router as well, nothing. Tried to disable and enable wifi on the phone and restarted a few times as well. Cant really put my finger on it.
Any ideas?
I updated to the SG .73 build about 3 days ago. I noticed batter battery life, no where near what I was used to on my GS2 though.
Anyhooo, any ideas guys, I am concerned.

That's unlikely to be your device. Probably the router or something.

I have also messed around with the wifi sleep policy. No issues there. Power saving is also disabled.
Could it be anything else? An app maybe? I will remove the most recent ones and report back. Badass battery monitor was the last one I installed.

Hi, along with that also try to connect to some other router and let us know if the problem persist.
The wifi connection remains active but no internet. Just thought I would add. I will connect to another wifi hotspot. My wife's GS2 tethering and report back.
I assume that you got "limited connectivity" problem.
If my assumption is true then you should try checking in your Wifi router setting, set encryption method to AES. The problem was addressed when I tried doing this and in addition, changed my Wifi channel from auto to a specific channel.
Right, not sure how this all started but like many others my internet connection (More specifically over wifi) just randomly stopped. After a fair bit of reading on both these forums and Sony's own forum, I downloaded and installed an app called WeFi Pro. Somehow this seemed to fix everything and now have a working wifi internet connection again.
Will do some more reading into this but as a fix i'd recommend installing this app. Oh BTW its free so its a win all round!!

Want an app that shuts off WiFi when out of range, then pings

Hi guys,
I am looking for an app that does *two* things:
1. Shuts off Wifi when I get out of wifi range; and
2. Automatically pings for a WiFi connection, but not so often that it drains the battery.
It would be even better if I could set the app to stop background syncing when Wifi is off.
Does anyone know of an app, or a combination of apps that might be able to do this?
The only thing I have found so far is Juice Defender Ultimate, but it seems like overkill to use that just for WiFi control.
Tasker or locale

I got Tasker but I'm just too lazy to get it to do what I want. Maybe I should put some effort into it.
At any rate, I think I found what works, but it is a combo of three apps:
Auto WiFi On/Off by Impresk, which turns off WiFi when out of range and then you can set how often it pings (I chose every 15 minutes);
WifiKeepAlive by roys, which keeps WiFi on when it is still in range;
Wi-Fi Web Login by SysLynx. This auto-logs you in to those annoying hotspots where you have to click a button on a webpage to get access. It really smooths the process.
Have you tried the "AT&T Smart Wi-Fi" app as found on the Play market? Not sure if it is what you need or not. Decent ratings.
"AT&T Smart Wi-Fi connection manager is a free app that finds and auto-connects to available hotspots, maximizes battery life by only turning Wi-Fi on & off when needed"...etc.etc.

+1 for Tasker, but the free version of Llama would easily handle this.
There's also a interesting app called Geotasker, and its free

I use Juice Defender Ultimate for this and lots of other things. You can set it to learn your habbits. After a few days it knows that when your on the cell towers around yours house that you use wifi, but never anywhere else. So it begins turning wifi off untill it sees your cell towers again. Lots of other crazy stuff too. I had a semi-aggressive set up going and with listening to slacker too and from work (45-60 min each way) plus FB and such throughout the day on and off, I got over 24 hours. Its worth shot. Tasker does lots of cool stuff too. I just use JDU because its aimed at tailoring battery life to your needs.

I just had too many problems with Juice Defender; it was always cutting off my communication when I needed it.
