I f*&#ing hate this stock rom! If anyone could tell me how, or if there is a way by disabling a service, to stop the google search popping up when you swipe past the home button or hold it for a second. Aargh!
Install Google Now Launcher or Nova.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
I have the pro version of nova installed. This has no options to disable this feature
Install Tasker for example. Then if You swipe the home button the popup will show with apps to choose - then choose Tasker (use always) that could do just nothing.
Now if You swipe home button only white circle would appear - that would do nothing.
I should have pointed out that my intention is to stop this circle popping up, so i can use the slimpie controls and disable the navbar completely. I am afraid I am struggling to come to terms with just how limited a stock rom is. Sure I can get root via the sony dev website but at this point I think all the fancy algorithms for camera performance would be removed, as well as throttling for thermal control.
When you Google Search, you find https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
The Irony
I'm using this app to fast lock the screen when I swipe up the home button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
otherwise you can use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
to have more options respect to open google search
Just FYI:
- This is called "Swype up for Google Now" in old Nexus manuals.
- Now in Android 6.0 is replaced for "Google Now on tap".
I don't really know how to disable it.... Maybe trying another Launcher.
Thanks for your input. however the home button launcher will not achieve my goal, and the swipelauncher disabler is comically pointless! It is less a disable function, more so it just doesn't launch my browser, choosing instead to flash the screen at me! It is clear that I will not be sated until custom roms come about with some CM or AOSP goodness. Please hurry devs, I want to love this phone...
I'm a bit late to the party and I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I've just been disabling some apps on my z5c and one of them was the Google Now app (I think it was called). Because the bubble popping up was from the Google now app, it has stopped appearing ever since. Hope to have helped.
Disable the Google App
Yep remove Google Now or I just tried this and works well (you cannot prevent the animation that will still persists, but the action gets revoked the way you have requested.)

It may sound a little novice, but I tried to find the option, but couldn't find any.
Is there any ways to remove the "Google Search Box" on the home screen of OPX ?
Yeah. Disable the App called "google App" and you have a beautiful black screen.

Use another launcher?
Couldn't you just hold onto the bar and remove it? If not, another launcher like Nova Launcher would be able to do it.

No, unfortunately that doesn't work with the built-in bar, only ones you add yourself as widgets.
I've found an app file called base.apk in /data/app/ com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1 - could this be changed, renamed etc as a solution for this? I'm not game to try because I don't want to break anything.
I used Debloater to uninstall the Google Search App. Than its gone. If your device is not rooted you could just try to deactivate it. I am not sure if you can do it in the Apps section in the settings but Debloater does nearly the same without root. It just deactivates the selected Apps.
Be aware that if you deactivate the app "close all running apps" button will also disapear!
Hope that helps you out.
If you want to remove the google search bar and keep the Google Now Launcher and its possibilities I only know of the following solution :
- Root your phone
- Install Xposed framework
- Install Xposed GEL Settings which has an option to hide the search bar
If you don't want to keep the Google Now functionnalities then just go with another Launcher.

If you disable Google App, you can not use close all open apps X button. :crying:
New option in OOS 2.2.0, now you can remove search bar !
Tap on the home screen. You'll see three options i.e Wallpapers- Widgets- Settings. Go to settings. Scroll the screen down, You'll see to hide search bar, enable it, to hide search bar.
Enjoy:good:
Great news

This is such a great find!!! Thanks.
Edit: however, the search bar is still present in the recent apps screen.
I recently installed Nova on my mate 10. Every time I try to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the drawer (all apps), both drawer and Google Assistant will show. I tried so many way and did so many research and still could't figure out how to disable this Google Assistant shortcut feature. I drive everyday so I enjoy using Google Assistant to make phone calls when I am driving.
Does any one know a trick hoe to disable this Google Assistant swipe up shortcut in mate 10?
Thanks!
Hi, its simple. Follow this:
1. Go to Settings then search "Default Apps"
2. Select "Assistance & voice input" then select none
Enjoy your new mate
Thank you @deodass, my same problem solved perfectly!
If you do this on Pie, however, you can no longer access Google Assistant in any other manner (as far as I can tell). I have a Mate 10 and am using the off-screen navigation gestures (i.e., relying on the home button). Any thoughts?
Isn't it easier to disable the Gesture?

Read again, I'm using off-screen navigation (I have a regular Mate 10 with a home button). That choice is not offered unless you're using gestures.
deodatts, you litteraly saved my life. I had been searching for months for a solution to deactivate this pain in the a**.
Created this account here especially to thank you !!!! cheers
I want to get rid of it too, but I want to keep Hey Google. When I initially disabled assistant, Hey Google still worked. Then, while looking for a way to change the tts voice (only two options, red and orange, showed up in the Google app) I installed Google Assistant from the Play Store and deleted it afterwards, and "Hey Google" under Voice Match in the Google app settings has been greyed out ever since unless I enable Google as the assist app and not just as voice input, which again enables the annoying swipe up gesture. Any idea how to go back?
Back in the days of Google now on tap, there was a feature that let you select text off your screen in real time, that was extremely helpful, it seems to be gone in the Google assistant, does anyone know where I can find a good alternative? I am rooted on an LG phone. Thanks
Hello good people! I did a factory reset because this device was not working good and it was really buggy, I did this before when i had problem with the device, but now I'm stuck at location selection and can't pass it! Please take a look at my pictures, to clear the situation.
I'm seeking for help for months now, so, if anyone can help me, I will be really grateful
Thank you, Marko
I have the sam problem
Anyone please ?
So! For whoever visits this thread in the future I found a way to escape from MLS default app and use this device as tablet. The process is easy and can be done in a couple of minutes:
1) While you set up the device you are asked to connect to wifi. When entering the password a keyboard pops up. Long press on the spacebar and press "Voice".
2) Then a Voice prompt pops up with a settings gear on the left, click this and a new pop up will appear.
3) On the top right side click Help & Feedback and Browser will open.
4) If you previously connected to wifi now you have a fully working browser (you dont need to be connected to internet). In the browser top right corner click the 3 dots and tap on "share page"
5) A popup will appear with two options.
6) Long press on the Bluetooth icon and go to bluetooth settings.
7) From there If you swipe from the left the setting navigation bar will appear.
8) Now you can unlock adb debugging etc.
Notes:
MLS MAIC 3D app is being used as a default launcher so you need to sideload another launcher e.g discreet launcher and use that as default app.
Make sure to disable Bot Tester, MLS Updater, Video Calls and all other MLS related apps.
Somethings are broken e.g. downloading from the default browser crashes (use bluetooth, usb sideloading or another browser)
Recents button is disabled
Notification bar is disabled
There arent any google services - so no playstore -. I personally use F-droid
Congrats now you have a fully working android tablet
Cheers
