Camera lag Xperia Z5 Compact - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it just me or does the Z5 compact have a very annoying lug right after taking a picture?
I mean, I can pre-focus on something, lock the focus, but after I press the botton (or touch the screen) to take the picture, it looks like the phone quicky focuses again or measures the exposure again (or whatever it does). The result is that I always miss the moment, especially with children pictures or things that move faster.
This lug sometime is very short, sometime is longer. I tried different camera apps, I tried the Sport Program (which indeed makes it a little bit better if you choose also 8Mpx resolution) but it does not change: the lug is always there.
I have a Z5 compact rooted, with 32.2.A.0.253 and Androplus kernel 3.10.84-v36 (and security patch April 2016, unbeliavable Sony!).
Reading online, I saw several complains about that, I am afraid I need to live with that or sell the phone. Anyone managed to solve it?

You should switch camera mode. Use different scenario, like children or sports. Or download timeshift burst and use that. Superior automatic is quite bad when you have to take quick photos

Thank you for the suggestion, but Timeshift burst can take pictures in low resolution only (max 1280x720px)
I tried also all different scenario, including children or sports, lag is still there.

hey , have you tried to clear cache memory ? or use a third party apk to see if your lag is gone.. I don`t have this lag problem and i have 2 mounths with my z5c .. sorry for english !

Yes I tried what you wrote, it is even worse with 3rd party apk.
The lag is minimal but enough to loose the moment. Are you sure you do not have this problem? Have you tried to focus your finger and move it as soon as you click to take the picture? I can bet that your finger will be far away from the starting position in the picture, whatever settings you try in the app... Than do the same with another brand phone and the difference will be so clear and so annoying

It really does not work for me. It would be nice to have feedbacks also from some others Xperia phones about that.

Z1C to Z3C to Z5C user here. Sony stock camera have always lagged like hell. They supposedly finally "fixed" it with the X Performance, don't know if they're going to "fix" their older phones though.
I'm half hoping it has always been a pure software issue so that I might have the chance of getting a improved camera in a future update, but then again if that was the case then ****ing **** you Sony for not doing **** for so long, and "fixing" it only to sell the XP.

Massive camera shutter lag

OK I really hope this is a bug! I thought at first the lag was due to indoor low light but even if you prefocus with a half shutter press, the camera still takes up to two seconds to actually take the shot and by then, the subject is often gone. Exposure time is way too long with flash too:its as if you are shooting without flash. The camera needs a lot of work!
Mike
Wow, I'm surprised this isn't running the gauntlet here. The camera lag is so bad that the camera is just about unusable. Even with flash off and a half press (prefocus), the camera is so slow that it can only be used to capture still life or pre-arranged shots: at least a full second delay. Trying to get a candid shot: forget it!
And the exposure time is so long on flash shots that you might as well not even have flash: still blurry.
To me, these are really bugs so I hope they are fixed.
Mike
Using the on screen button is usually quicker than the actual shutter button. Not sure why. I love having the physical button but I find that I am unable to take action shots with it at all due to the lag.
Try using the on screen button and see what kind of results you get.
May have somethin to do with the auto enhance setting, I haven't tested it but just thought I should.mention it
Bussin Caps from my 3D shooter
I tried it by unchecking all the boxes like auto enhance, 16:9, and tried the button on the screen (after tap focusing) and I still get the same delay. The odd thing is that sometimes it only takes maybe a half second. Other times it takes up to TWO full seconds. And it does freeze the screen initially right when you press the shutter, it just doesn't take the photo at that time. After the delay, it freezes again (at a different point in time) and that is when the actual shot is taken. Trying to take a picture of my friend's newborn over the weekend, I couldn't get one good shot. Babies move a lot and I timed it when she had her head tilted just right and pressed the shutter but by the time the camera took the picture, she had her hand in her mouth or had turned her head to the side, etc.
Mike
One of the things that I noticed is that even after you do a pre-focus, once you press the camera button, it re-focuses *again*. This may be the reason for the lag.
I've read its Androids fault in the way the software performs. Who knows, for those moments use video and later take the frame you want...maybe.
This is the single biggest, and probably only, reason I'm seriously contemplating returning my EVO. I cant stand the camera interface. As somewhat of a photography buff, I find this camera software to be unacceptable.
I hold out hope for root and a potential revamp of the camera software.
The screen button definitely works faster than the physical button, which sucks cause I was really looking forward to the physical button.
...........
mine is almost the exact opposite. almost immediately after touching the external button the picture takes. it takes slightly longer for the picture to take if i use the on screen button

Mine lags too, screen and hardware button..On another note.....
Seen this on another thread...Anyone notice we're missing camera options that were and still are in the description of the camera features for our phones? Quick shots, action cam etc.... Here's a link to the thread wich has a link to HTC's website where the features are detailed.

Oddly I find the camera physical button to be responsive, I guess maybe half a second lag? Much, much better than the Evo4G. And mine definitely doesn't refocus.
As I reread the posts on this thread, I'm starting to wonder if you guys realize the "shutter" button on the Evo3D has two degrees of pressure...like like a real SLR. Press to the first detent to get a focus lock, hold for as long as you like or recompose if need be, then press all the way down to take the photo. There isn't much lag for the latter step.
Yeah, I don't get much lag either, I'm pushing down the whole way and can snap off consecutive shots pretty quickly.
I took the OTA if that matters, don't remember it being laggy before either.

I heard that the newest camera app was still having issues close to release, so they pulled it til it could be fixed. However, I emailed HTC, and they said they weren't aware that the camera app was supposed to have those features.
Maybe you should drop HTC an email pointing them to what you found and see what they say. Worth a shot.

i'm tired of my phone's camera app locking up after using the hard camera button..it doesnt seem to do it if i use the on-screen button. i use the camera alot and its really frustrating. the lag is terrible as well. taking pics of a 10month old and 3 yr old is damn near impossible.
i miss my EVO. good thing wife still has hers.

[Q] Why is my friend's s2 better?

I recently posted that my friend and I have the same phone with the same carrier, the same firmware (2.3.4) etc. I asked why his camera was better, and never got a answer which solved it. I now think this was my folley as it appears that it is actually his screen which is better.
We bluetoothed some pictures we both had aken ourselves to see if it was in fact the camera and although it is not as big a difference when we take pictures on each device his pictures (the same pictures) look slightly beter.
Any ideas why this may be, if i got a botched phone or something? there is a couple of slight scrathes over my camera if tht could make the difference but i doubt it since it's more the fact my pictures are blurry.
Thanks in advance, Harry

Did you check the screen settings? There's one besides 'Brightness'. The screen can be set to something, Dynamic, or something else. This could be it... have a look around and make sure you're on the same settings.
FWIW I read your first post a week or 2 ago, and didn't answer cause it sounds like a really strange problem...and without both phones in my hand I couldn't begin to speculate. I doubt that you got a sub-par phone. Try making photos without holding the device, set it on a level surface. The blur could be from your hand shaking very very slightly, and maybe your buddy has steadier hands than you do. Really, no way to tell without having the phones in front of me. Sorry if this doesn't help. Keep us posted on your findings and good luck!
I saw that some i9100 got a different Camara Firmware possibly he got a better Firmware...

I know it's hard without seeing both, we're struggling with both. I have a more recent camera firmware i think as i updated through samsung apps not long ago. I'm not entirely sure about the shake but we have done a lot of photos and we almost always had him take both pictues. Also we both use 'standard' screen mode (we checked).
check to make sure that the camera lense is clean as well, often a smudgy/dirty lense will make bad photos.
I'm actually having the same problem (and have been having it for months). I only noticed it when I was a concert late last year and I was recording on my phone and watching other people's SGS2s record. Theirs was obviously much clearer and did not distort like my camera/footage did (when lights would flash, mines would blur, 'blob' together lights that were close to one another etc. while theirs captured it with clarity). Then I started to notice that when I zoom in, my camera gets extremely blurry, too. I started comparing to a few other people and, yes, on the same settings my camera is much worse. I've tried resetting the camera settings which has proved to do nothing for it.
I was starting to think I was crazy but I've finally found someone else with the same/a similar problem (was extremely hard to Google).
I also updated my firmware via Samsung Apps. It seems to be great in natural light but otherwise, it's really quite poor.
Camera firmware is TBEF04.
Any ideas?
guys it would be better if we can attach our sample pictures. i had similar problem. this is mine.

[Q] Use camera with mini external LED Torch ?

I'm in Ultra/Note3/One Max keep changing my mind mode at the moment. Bought myself a cheap gel case for the Ultra off eBay to practice does it fit in my pocket scenarios lol.
Anyway, don't know why, but for some reason, I've always been fond of things like mega powerful or really small key torches. One of those things you feel like you should buy/keep handy just in-case even though you don't really need it. Must be the kid in me...
So, given the lack of flash... I was wondering how well taking low light photos would work using one of those mini (run on an AA battery) type torches with along with the phone. They typically sell for a few quid, attach to a keyfob etc. You can get even smaller single LED ones that run off button type batteries, but I'm assuming these would be too underpowered.
Would using an external LED torch result in images similar to an inbuilt 'Flash' (actually just LED, not really a flash...) or are there other factors that mean it just wouldn't be the same ?
How many lumens or whatever does a typical led flash pump out. Is the brightness controlled as part of the exposure process, or is it just switched on due to low lighting and exposure decided afterwards ?

A strobe light (light from your device) - Will use less power and will capture motion better, will have deeper and richer colours.
Always on lights - The good thing is, what you see is what you get. Using a torch or external power source, you'll know and see exactly what you'll be taking an image of. However you will also need to mess with ISO to capture an equal quality image as opposed to strobe. (motion blur)
- Using an app that can do this will require A LOT of time fiddling, and may lose the moment... But the end result could enable a better quality image.
If you can get a very bright external light source then it will be better than the LED on a phone.
Phone LED are about 50-70 lumen... hope this helps...

Yes, Saw that.
So my question would be how would it compare to using a torch. Maybe with a diffusing material on it ?
By the way, plenty of cheap small waterproof torches around.
My main concern would be trying to take a photo with the giant Z Ultra with one hand and shining the torch with the other .....

Don't think that would be an issue. We are talking small 1xAA torch, so torch is abot the size of your finger. Should be easy enough handle at same time as the phone if using both hands.

I'm not sure ... I have enough problems taking a photo one handed with my Galaxy Nexus you see ....
I'm probably going to get a Honami as well anyway , so the Z Ultra will probably not need to perform many camera duties anyway and it wouldn't be for very long.
It's better to use filter of camera then having weird torch with Giant Smartphone,i really disappointed with camera(also lake of led flash) but now i mostly use filter in low light conditions, just my experience.

I got mine

So got my phone.
450 Euro, I was lucky to sell my over a year old XZ for 350.
Somebody was selling his XZ1 from TMobile contract, which is my carrier as well...
Anyway quick findings:
- Now in the Camera ISO and Shutter speed is independent. Which is nice
- They removed Pictures widget. What a shame
- The phone looks great (black), and feels great. Battery seems great as well.
- Current Xperia Transfer is a f.... joke. I got really annoyed. I mean I wanted to do in in the Cloud first, but Xperia Transfer app was PREPARING the files to send for like 50 minutes so I ditched this method. I just wanted sms and call log.
I've chosen Xperia Companion via Backup method... I took me like 6 backup and restore attempts to eventually get all the sms up to two weeks ago. I just couldn't get the latest ones. Crazy. Maybe it's a Android 7.1.1 - 8.0 compatibility issue?
- I have no bloody idea how to make Picture in Picture work
- So far the phone seems amazing. It's very snappy.
The QUESTION:
How to disable the function which changes the colour of the dark Ui elements according to the
surrounding lighting? It changes the keyboard, the dropdown menu colour etc, while other elements stay the same.
Adaptive brightness is OFF here and the phone still performs this.

You need the Youtube Red subscription for the app to work in P in P mode, but it's not available in all country.
It's like that too for any Android 8.0 phones, including the Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL, so it's not Sony's fault.

So you switched from the XZ? How does it compare in battery?
I have a really good offer for my XZ, I could get an XZ1 for a little bit more if I sell my XZ, but I'm reluctant because I'm really happy with it.
The all metal design is what I was waiting for from Sony for a long time. Things that worry me are the issues people have with rebooting, crashing apps and wifi drops. It's probably an Oreo thing, but it happens even after a recent update. The camera distortion didn't get fixed either, if I'm not mistaken. It did on the Premium.
I could get the XZ Premium for even less than my phone is worth, but the phone is really huge, the speaker mesh is fabric which freaks me out, it's a nightmare if you have to clean it and also I've seen people reporting the painted plastic loosing color or even chunks of paint falling off (only on the chrome one, as far as I noticed, not sure if it's a case with the black one as well).
The XZ1 seems to be a more premium built than the actual Premium, but reading through the user impressions, it all sounds like Oreo early adoptors issues, which might or might not be fixed.
I'm really torn here, Premium seems more matured in software and better battery, but it's a bit too big for me and the idea of it getting wear and tear marks so fast is something I'm not used to from Sony. The XZ1 seems to be opposite, buggy software, but excellent and durable build quality.

In my case XZ1 seems to be as stable as my XZ I loved. Just better. I can't turn off one thing here mentioned before, but overall it's great.
I didn't have any reboots or crashes, battery is great. Alarm works.
My XZ1 is working very good overall. The battery is enough for a whole day with 4G and chatting Facebook surfing and I use my phone for watching movies which takes me 30% per movie with full brightness and full sound. The WIFI issue is the only thing but if I restart the phone it works properly. I think it is oreo and I wonder if xz premium which recently get oreo faces the same problem. I hope it will be fixed with a later update. Bad camera shots in the auto mode with low light and not so light flush is something on the other hand selfies with low light are great. To sum up if I were to buy a new smartphone (with this experience of XZ1) I would buy this one again. Hope I helped you...

Has the camera improved with updates?

I got the phone back in November when it first came out. The camera was quite disappointing at the time with an oil painting effect. I'm thinking of coming back to the M10P. Have there been any improvements?

I have BLA-129 (C432) and it seems that all is as before (115). There is still an oil painting effect on zoom. Maybe a little bit better. But I'm not sure.

Same is the case with me
what do you guys mean oil painting effect?
i'm having a difficult time with my camera, as any time i try to send pictures i take via mms, they always end up very pixelated. i've tried several different camera apps and text apps but they are all the same, same goes for reducing the photo resolution in camera settings. i've never had a phone with this problem. any ideas?

Thanks for this link. Seems nothing has changed in the last three months with the camera, knowing how slow Huawei are with just security patches alone, I can't see this camera being addressed any time soon.
Yes still presence of oil paint when zoomed in max. However it is only with mate 10 that this was implemented while previous Huawei phones instead had been grainy when zoomed in. People complain when grainy as well so not sure I should complain.
