flashed wrong kdz - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So recently i soft bricked my phone and since i don't have money to spend on a new phone i started to search on the web on what the problem was. i found out that all i had to do was flash my phone so i like the trusting idiot and worried fool trusted the multiple videos that i saw in the metro's and t mobiles kdz is the same. i then flashed ms631 i noticed it was wrong when i booted it up an metro appeared, so i decided to search forums and found out that i needed h631 since that is regular t mobile. i found some downloads of different h631 but when i try to flash that on it goes through the first but when it get ready to apply it says contact system admin. i really need to fix this phone i tried normal and cse flash and still get the same results and i don't understand how the download links work that take you to lg's site since nothing pops up. is there a way to remove the stupid mistake i did or do i really need to buy another phone, i cant unlock the phone since metro has a dumb device unlock app that they use instead of obtaining the unlock code. the phone is a t mobile lg g stylo

A couple of questions

Hello, I just recently got an Atrix off of ebay. I want to get into playing witih android phones. I've already read numerous threads, got the android sdk, rsd lite, etc.. I've been reading about flashing, and to be careful of what you flash based on what firmware versions are already on the phone.
The problem I have is the phone is subsidy locked, but it's locked in a way that not even AT&T sims work. It always asks for the pin, and the code AT&T gave me (they stated it was the subsidy unlock code) fails. So I looked at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356121
However, I have no idea what's on this phone. I can't access any settings menu in the phone, as it sticks to the "Emergency Calls Only" screen. i don't know what firmware is on the phone, what radio is on it, etc.. I don't want to try to flash a radio file and have it brick my phone. I've read quite a bit this past hour, but I'm at a crossroads here and don't know what to do to figure out what is exactly on this phone. If I knew what I had exactly, I'd be a lot more confident in flashing things.
I do know the bootloader is unlocked (the phone boots saying "Unlocked"). That's all I know :\
EDIT: Disregard. It took me another 6 hours but I finally got everything figured out (had to boot it with no sim to view things, then from there I got into it all). Rooted, CWM, flashed the bell radio and my sim works for now. Thanks for the valuable info that's listed here!
Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!
hey,
I do have the atrix which is netwoek subsidy locked.
I even cant use at&t. I am outside us currently.
Could you tell me how did you flashed bell radio & where u got that.
Thanks

Rent a center locked?

So i woke up today to my device telling me it is rent a center locked, what the hell does this mean? I bought it from CL and and its been working for months, anyway to get rid of this or am i screwed?
Does CL stand for Clove, the UK electronics vendor? What variant and any modifications?
It sounds like you bought a phone that was rented from rac and not paid for.

Craigslist sorry, and its the RS988
Anyone? My phone is screwed im stuck with nothing;(
After looking around for you, I noticed most of the people with the Samsungs that had that issue ended up having to go to cm13 until they finally found a way to get around it. Considering the RS988 is not bootloader unlocked, doesn't have root or twrp available for it it looks like you are pretty much out of luck. One file I have seen mentioned is sec.abt, however I have also read that people have had issues removing it. Have you tried flashing factory firmware back to it again or a factory reset? Both didn't work on the samsungs, however it seems like there isn't any info for the lg's. Google searching also shows there are imei repair companies that can supposedly do it for $40-$80 from what I have seen. If you figure out how to fix it, share it in case anyone else gets burned by a scammer.
LG RS988 Rent a center lock Remove
Any one have any lg rent a center lock lg G5
Email me at : [email protected]
I know this is a dead thread, but I think I figured out how to get rid of the RAC (rent a center) lock for good. The rac lock uses a system administrator profile along with a program called sec.abt that can not be removed or frozen. If you manage to uninstall it is just reinstalls itself. I was not able to find any information on how to remove this without using special hardware like an octopus box that costs hundreds of dollars.
I used LGUP with the uppercut modification (can be found here on XDA) along with the KDZ files from here https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-rs988-firmwares/
I was only able to find the USA RSS 11C firmware until I found the page linked above with the BPT 10D firmware. Whenever you flash the stock 11C USA firmware the RAC program comes back, however if you use LGUP and uppercut to flash the BPT 10D firmware using the upgrade option (refurbish will error out) I found that my device booted correctly and seemed to work, however I did not have any fastboot options and it said there were no updates available (you need fastboot to unlock the bootloader and the latest update grants that ability). I then reinstalled the USA 11C firmware and to my delight found that the RAC software and device administrator profile were gone.
I then checked for updates and it started download the latest update. I believe I will not have a problem unlocking the bootloader and rooting from this point on. I'll let you guys know if anything changes.
I'm only posting this because I have been sitting on a RAC locked phone for months that got locked over six months after I bought it used and really hope this can help someone else that got screwed over.
I have an octopus box and can you point me to the partition this security sits on? I have an unlocked bootloader us996 and I can use fastboot to erase the partition . Do you know?

This worked for me on a LG G5 i've had in a box since last October because of the same kind of craigslist scam BS. Thank you so much!
Could you walk me through this I need to get my phone unlocked, Tia

EZ Questions

Hi friends,
Hopefully this will be newbie appropriate questions that are easy to answer:
1. I just bought a used ATT Lg G5 H820 (Titan I think) where the seller gave me an unlock code - I've never bought a used phone before, but it's for my son, and I don't know how to execute unlocking and what not, but I figure Google is my friend there.
2. I want to downgrade android from 7 N to 6 Marshmellow - I've been reading that there are a couple of Flash tools that can do that if I have the image - I've searched high and low and moved heaven and earth to find one that I think is bona fide without making me go through a sea of click ad traps, to no avail - my assumption is all I need are the tools and just the stock image.
So here are my questions:
A. Can anyone share a link to the image that I seek where downloading it doesn't require a ninja to do the download?
B. Do I have to use an ATT image? can I use a Tmobile H830? bad idea?
C. If I flash it down to Marshmellow with either of the images as mentioned in (B) are there negative ramifications to unlocking the phone?
Thank you in advance - I sincerely appreciate any and all advice on the matter.

1. To unlock the phone from a stock rom power off the phone and insert a sim card for another network and power it up. Phone will ask for the unlock code when it finishes booting. Since it's an ATT variant use a t mobile sim card. I'd make sure you can unlock it before you do anything else.
2. Why do you want to downgrade to marshmallow? Doesn't seem like its worth the effort. Besides you are going to have to then turn off updates or your going to get updated to nougat. If you decide to downgrade you have to downgrade to an ATT image. Using a T mobile image will most likely brick your phone. Not sure if it will be a soft or hard brick but it's not worth it.

Good idea on #1 - I wondered about that, but wasn't sure if that mattered - I did do a complete reset as soon as I got the phone, and haven't unlocked still, so I'm hoping that I didn't ruin the 'unlockability' by resetting it.
Anyway on your #2, I did a phone upgrade recently from G5 to G6, and was on Marshmellow with the G5 - there were aspects that I'm familiar with that Android version, so I want to try to downgrade - I've never experimented with the phones that I pay service on because I've always been afraid of bricking it bad, so I figure that with my sons used phone, I can tinker a bit without losing too much sleep if I mess things up.
Thank you for that great response - I sincerely appreciate it!

Hi there,
Might I ask if you have any ideas on how I can proceed to downgrade to Marshmellow? - I want to try rooting Marshmellow if I can.
This is a bit off topic, but when I was exploring this site, I found this subdomain https://depot.xda-developers.com - and I'm very interested in purchasing one of those lifetime VPN services, but wanted to get more info from the community about the VPN options, as there seemed to be many pretty low cost VPN products to choose from.
And off the top of your head, do you know of a Simcard that I can purchase with no contracts where the minutes do not expire at the end of the month, that you personally like? - it seems like there are so many GSM options for this unlocked used phone. tia

Optimus L9 MS769 Security Error, Please Hold My Hand

Edit: I wanted to link this to the main Optimus L9 Security Error thread but didn't know how, any mod is welcome to do that for me ^_^
Hello XDA!
I recently acquired a LG Optimus L9 MS769 from my sister to use temporarily until I can get a new phone. Before bringing it to me, she tried swapping SIM cards with my mother's to see if that would work (without doing a reset first), which caused it to boot with that infamous Security Error screen. I have tried following just about every thread that I can understand in search of a solution, however I'm sort of stuck due to my limited knowledge in the all-things-android field. Also, I am aware that this sub-forum is for the P76x models, so sorry if I'm asking for help in the wrong spot.
I started with the most obvious suggestion, which was to try using the LG Mobile Support tool with my phone in S/W mode, with hopes of gaining access to perform a hard reset (hopefully that is the correct terminology). Within the driver selection window on the LG Mobile Support tool, there are three separate drivers for the USA MetroPCS model MS769. I tried running to tool with each of them one at a time, with the same result each time. Sometimes my phone would sit in S/W mode and the tool wouldn't detect a connection, so I would try from the beginning again. When I get it right, the support tool detects my phone, but says first that it is fully up to date with version V10F, then once it fully connects the tool tells me "Only wireless upgrades are supported on this phone." I even tried again using a fresh Mobile Support Tool and drivers straight from LG's support website.
Now, there are plenty of guides out there that explain in the most basic ways imaginable for how to flash stock firmware on my device, but all of them that I have read assume I have access to the device in the first place. There were never any alterations done to the ROM so I presume version V10F was the last OTA update MetroPCS sent the Optimus L9. My goal is to have an accessible device that I can hopefully install my own MetroPCS SIM-card in to, converting it into a working phone. So, I don't really mind if you tell me the only way I'm going to unbrick this thing is by loading CWM or CyanogenMod or w/e. I have no preference over a stock ROM or a custom one. As long as it won't re-lock itself when I insert my old SIM I'm in the clear.
Any help, links, comments, or hand-holding through this process will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your time,
Gale

LG Stylo 5 looking for S-off, unlock bootloader, root info/help?

Hi Everyone,
I just upgraded from a Samsung S5 to an LG Stylo 5 LG LM-Q720VS (Verizon US). Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm looking for general information about the phone I've searched for "LG Stylo 5" and Q720VS and not had much luck. Is there an XDA forum for the Stylo 5? Is it just really that unpopular?
I'm specifically looking to Unlock the Bootloader Install TWRP, and LineageOS (or any rom without Verizon Bloat) and have root.
Thanks for reading, Happy 2020!

Verizon device have locked bootloaders, this prevents a lot of Verizon devices from ever gaining root and the bootloader can't be unlocked, which means TWRP and Magisk can never be safely flashed on your device. The only hope that Verizon devices have of being rooted is if one of the universal rooting apps on android and the universal rooting programs on PC just happens to have an exploit that works on the device in question.
All I can say is try all of these apps and programs that you can find and hope for the best, you might get lucky, but I doubt it. Don't ask for examples of these apps and programs, there are too many to name, just look for as many different kinds of rooting apps/programs that you can find and try them.
My REAL advice is, if you like rooting and customizing your devices, you need to completely avoid buying Verizon devices and choose non-Verizon devices. If you are on the Verizon network, you would be better off to look on Swappa and find an unlocked/unlockable device that can be used on the Verizon network that also has root, TWRP and custom ROMs available. It is always best to do your research to see what devices have root and custom support BEFORE you buy the device, instead of buying the device first and then hoping that there is something available for it. When you buy a device without doing this research, you take your chances because it is a shot in the dark.

Thanks for the reply, It's reasonable and good advice.
I'm stuck with Verizon as no other carrier can service my rural US location, The Stylo 5 was free due to a billing error and a sale (no fees, or anything) so I figured why not. I'm familiar with the universal root applications you mentioned and am prepared to try them but I was hoping someone had found success and I simply missed the post somewhere in my searches. I'll put in some effort and report back here if I have any luck.
Thanks again!

The universal apps and programs have been almost useless since the release of Marshmallow/Nougat.
Btw, I forgot to mention in my previous reply that S-off is a HTC thing, other brands don't use S-off.

I'm almost certain that the bootloader is locked on that device. You need to verify whether it is locked or unlocked. If it is locked, that rules out using TWRP or Magisk to root the device and leaves you with the same options as I described in my post that you quoted when you made your reply, which is, to use the universal apps and PC programs designed to root android devices. But, to be honest, I doubt any if them will work, but it is worth trying.
Supposedly, this method will unlock your bootloader:
https://www.androidnature.com/how-to-unlock-lg-stylo-5-bootloader-commands-steps/
If that actually works, then you should be able to use Magisk to root your device. The Magisk method will require you to modify the boot.img in your device yourself, but it's easy, it's just an app and a few clicks to generate the modified boot.img. Try the unlock method that I linked, if it works, then I'll help you with the next stage in the process. If it doesn't work, you will have to resort to using the universal apps and programs that I mentioned.
Just do some searches for:
"Apps to root android"
And
"PC programs to root android"
Try all of them that you can find.

Just some Lg Stylo 5 love baby
Since he/she never responded I am going to try the steps mentioned, just purchased me Lg Stylo 5 from eBay for a cool $65, got a great deal, only problem is the fingerprint scanner is damaged but it's a cheap fix. Its the METRO PCS version so I'm pretty sure it's unlockable. I really appreciate your help and would love to see more development and support for the Lg Stylo 5 from the best forum ever!!!
Update... Went into developer options and unlocked the Bootloader then powered off, then powered on holding down and the power button, at the splash screen I briefly released the power button then immediately pressed it again while still holding the volume down button, this gave me the promising white screen that reads do you want to erase all data yes or no, I clicked no. But this is progress, but I can't get into Bootloader mode or downloading mode, I would love if someone can figure this out, I will keep trying!

Hey, just a status update. If you want root and/or custom ROMs on a Stylo 4, do not update beyond 20c and disable automatic updates. Currently working on porting TWRP, but as it stands I have what is effectively a bootloader unlock method. Release will be no sooner than June though but I'm hoping to have everything streamlined for the Stylo 4 /5 (and other LG phones) by then. https://twitter.com/ShinyQuagsire/status/1239749946141806592

If your thinking your going to root a Metro PCS Stylo 5, think again. I've tried almost every outlet...I've watched countless YouTube videos .... No luck. Does ANYONE have one they've actually rooted? I simply cannot and don't believe it's possible.
Ive tried multiple times to unlock fastboot/bootloader but anytime i type adb reboot bootloader it says no device found, when i type fastboot oem device-id it gets stuck on waiting for any device.
