High battery drain when Idle - Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Anyone else experiencing this?
My old one is fine but the replacement is loosing battery very quickly. It went 100% to 80% sitting idle in just 5h with no background apps running.
I tried reboot and cache wipe. Also tried disabling apps. Still draining quick.

Nope not installed. I even tried factory reset and disabling preinstalled oculus services.
I don't get it. Few days ago the battery was phenomenal. I seriously got well over 8h sot. Now it's draining away noticeable faster.

Hi.
U might want to install BBS to check for any offending apps/settings that might drain yr battery.

Mine is actually opposite. My old one had a severe battery drain overnight (around 15-20%) but my new one only drains like 7%
Never understood why but my guess is the battery itself

Could it be a LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other issue? Where I'm located my LTE signal varies and I tend to notice a difference in the battery life.

Not sure what happened but the battery drain is better now. I didn't change anything so not sure. Maybe it had something to do with the signal / radio.

Lte does drain more than Wi-Fi usually.. i get drain 2 percent in 5 to 6 hours on Wi-Fi maybe one or 2 more percent on lte

Agree

I Agree with you:good:

I get 10% drain in about 7.5 hours when attached to Wi-Fi.

I read in other posts that chrome may as well be a battery drain

You can't get stable battery result all the time with Android, esp Samsung. Normally my Note7 perform good but somedays it is quite bad

[Q] Terrible battery life on Evo View

I just got the View for my wife to replace her Kindle Fire and it has terrible battery life running HC. I have it in airplane mode and I have tried a number of battery life tips that have worked on all my other Android devices and nothing is working. For instance its been on battery for just under 5 hours and just barely over 1 hour display on and its at 35% right now. I used to have the Flyer and it was pretty decent when it came to battery life but the View is terrible. Am I missing something?
The flyer was wifi only. The view is running a mobile data plan. If you want it to get battery life like the flyer then turn the mobile data off and only use the wifi.
This is what I do with my view and I am usually trying to kill it at the end of the day to charge it. I'm on it constantly throughout the day as well.
My battery life seems fine. I use it off and on throughout the day and I have the Cellular radios on most of the time.

I'm beginning to think I might've received a bad View.
Its not normal and hardware is unlikely so check the battery usage stats on the settings menu and see what is using the battery.

I have been monitoring the battery stats very closely and it doesn't make sense what is causing so much drain. I even have Better Battery Stats installed to monitor partial wake usage and nothing is out of the ordinary. I've never received a device with a bad battery but I'm thinking this might be the first.

i think you did that does not sound normal mine last all day with heavy use i can say i have never had it go all the way down...you may have a bad battery it just doesn't sound like the two i play with in fact one on gb the other on hc and the hc is lasting more....
Aside from a possible bad battery, you might have a corrupted battery stats file. Try clearing the file by deleting it if you have root.
Wait a few days. I think the same thing happened to me. Maybe for the first few days the battery indicator is not very accurate.

We've had it since 1/31 and it hasn't gotten any better. I've been doing some more testing and it seems as though wifi is the culprit. In airplane mode without wifi on it seems fine without use and doesn't drain. With wifi on the battery usage shows a constant drain without any use.
Try out my rom. All my testers and users report much better battery life than the stock rom, and I've got a couple extra things under the hood.

I just picked up a view off of CL. Same problem.. Horrible battery, didn't even last a full day.
People make fun of the ipad, but that 10 hour battery is no joke. This thing, with cell radio off and wifi on, lasts me MAYBE 5 hours, and thats with medium usage.
That's insane.

Now don't just assume all Android tablets are like your experience with the View. I'm confident there is something defective with the one I purchased. I had the Flyer and it would last me a good 7 hours and I currently have the Galaxy Tab which easily gets me over 9 hours of actual use (ie screen on).

Battery drain issue.

Hi guys,
Is anyone having battery drain issues with their new sgs3's?
With my one it wouldn't last 12 hours without dying. Also if its at 100% it'll drop to 70% overnight while i sleep (6-7 hours) and thats with power saver on, sync off and running juicedefender.
Today I factory reset the phone and only installed flash, whatsapp and dolphin browser. Have wifi on, sync, data, gps and bluetooth off. Havent got pictures of battery stats yet since I only reset it half an hour ago.
So is anyone else experiencing battery drain? if so have you fixed it? and how?
Are there any apps I should be aware of that drain the battery?
I would remove juice defender.
Uninstall lightflow app if you are using it.
Use betterbstterystats to identify any wakelocks. The xda thread of the same name will be able to help with solutions.
Other than that follow general tips on increasing battery life that are found all over xda.
This device is easily capable of much better battery life than you are getting.
Good luck.

No issues at all so far, in my case. In fact this is the first Android phone I've owned that has no battery-related issues
Based on my previous experience what you can try doing is (a) install CPU Spy to see if your phone is entering 'deep sleep' appropriately (b) install BetterBatteryStats to identify offending applications.
Even the 'Battery' section in settings is useful -- just check if any apps are keeping the phone awake for longer than you've actually used them ('Stay Awake' number).
ok well ive installed bad ass battery monitor since its free. Also since I did factory restore i charged it to full and in 1 hour 44 mins it used 7% on idle. Going to charge it to full again and use it normally to see how it is.
Only apps ive installed is XDA, badd ass battery, dolphin browser and whatsapp.

Not too happy with my battery either. Fully charged over night and its down to 89% 1hr 30 later. Is that normal? However, you did mention lightflow earlier though which I have installed - Is that a massive battery drain? My battery stats seem to show display as being the big culprit but I have brightness set to it lowest setting.
Also, can't seem to find battery monitor pro on play?

I'm on Omega V4.0 and with wifi always on, fully charged 3 hours back and when i woke up it's 95% remaining. So about 1.66% loss per hour in sleep mode. With regular usage and installing and testing different roms and backing up etc them i easily get about 8~10 hours. Phone's made in Korea and battery mfg date is 2012.5.6.
Plus tons of widgets on home screens.

I get always too much battery drain during night

i like to keep my gs3 connected to wifi and muted while i'm sleeping but when i wake up i always get 8-10% battery drain (in 8 hours app), i come from a motorola atrix which in the same conditions i get no more than 2% drain over night.
i've tried many roms (omega, foxhound, ultimarom...), many kernels (stock, galaxsih, siyah, phenomenal medium and extreme...), and also some basebands (modem, radio) but i keep sticking with the XXLH1 'cause i get less drain with this one. but in any combination i always get 8-10% battery drain during night.
i've seen some of you say that you get 2-4% drain in the same context so i would like to know what am i doing wrong :/

How is it sleeping overnight? check settings > battery and check how much it's awake when the screen is off, then check better battery stats to see what is waking it up, I would probably say you have too much synced.
you're right, i have too much synced, 3 google accounts, plus facebook, twitter, whatsapp, skype and others but those are the same settings i had on my old motorola atrix and even there i got 1-2% drain, although i was on gingerbread.
i will install some battery stats application to see in details whats draining it so much, 'cause under settings it only says that idle and standby time are the draining reasons.
gonna try the leaked 4.1.2 to see if i get better results, thanks!.

Better battery stats is the best, but that is a lot to sync, I would imagine it's not sleeping well because whenever an app decides to sync it will wake the phone up, and let's not forget the S3 has a 1.4GHz quad core CPU, if it wakes and uses all cores it will drain the battery faster than a single or dual core CPU. I notice the Atrix has a 1GHz dual core, so you should expect a lot more drain especially with that much synced, honestly you shouldn't need Skype syncing unless you always want your skype contacts to be up to date in the contacts app, and Twitter just syncs to pull the latest tweets through, you can just do that manually every time you open the app.

does that mean that jelly bean is making you experience worse battery life?.
maybe it's because the atrix has 2 cores but if the gs3 uses all 4 cores to fetch or sync some data, that would mean it's not very well optimized for simple tasks, thanks anyway i'll try better battery stats

Android doesn't fully support multi-core CPUs yet, which is the main problem, all you can try if you need all the apps syncing is download a custom kernel and change the CPU governor this will change how the system uses the CPU and it can help.
Well for starters, Google Now should be disabled if you are concerned about battery life. Also check for and disable latitude and location reported from maps (they are getting activated by google now) Even if data/sync/gps are off google now constantly polling for updates thus draining battery.
With my HD2 running GB/Froyo for over 2 years, and methodical testing to achieve the lowest battery drain in standby (testing for 8hrs at night) the best I could do in AP mode was .35% per hour which is less than 3% over 8hrs.
I have owned and tested my S3 for 4 months and usually get 1% per hr and in AP mode....I get similar to the HD2 above at .35% per hour but I haven't tested to crazily.
I find it hard to believe and would love to be convinced, that any S3 owner can get less than 3% per hour drain without going into AP mode. Please prove me wrong and state your methods for all to learn.
Finally, I do not find the battery drain to be Linear. I am guessing that a battery charged to 100% sometimes may actually be a bit stronger than 100%. So doing a random single test may result in low drain numbers but that may be misleading. That same test performed at 20% level, may yield worse results if in fact my theory that the battery does not drain linearly...is true. But for consistency, I always perform the test at 100% battery and let it sit in the charger for an extra 2hrs before unplugging it. This way, at least the test is more consistent and more directly comparable.
I now have Green Power app installed and it is able to automatically turn off wifi/data in standby under conditions set by me, the user. I am performing some nightly drain tests. I would be thrilled if I could get between .35-.75% per hour. My first 2 nightly tests failed thanks to Slacker Radio....which held a Wakelock even though I bloody killed it!
I think this could be due to fast dormacy
http://www.androidnz.net/2012/06/at-your-own-risk-how-to-disable-fast.html?m=1 there is an app to disable this.

A bit off topic but just reminds me of my old Nokia N95 because whenever I was in a network dead spot or just have no signal for whatever reason (Gif fgaff) the battery would completely run dry within maybe 6 hours, and you'd think because it has no signal it should last longer than the few days standby I normally got.
And I've never had a SIM in any of my Android phones that lost service for long so has anyone seen this happen on an Android or is it just a Symbian thing?

When a phone has no signal it has to scan all frequencies for a signal, this constant switching of frequencies drains a lot of battery, it also increases the power to the mobile networks chip to try to pick up even a weak signal, which also drains the battery faster, it happens on all phones.

It is not that I an dubious about the 3% drop over 11 hours I just want to get to the same level!
EDIT: To get the 3% drop do you disable everything you mention above? I use Tasker to disable everything including sync, wifi etc...except the cell. But I do not disable play store notifications seperately.

s9 plus exynos battery drain ( android system)

I have done factory reset atleast 5 times , but everytime 3-4 days later , the battery life tends to get poorer and poorer.
The day after factory reset - android system is consuming half the battery percentage of screen
But a few days later android system is taking alot of battery ( SCREENSHOT ATTACHED)
Can someone let me know that why is android system taking so much battery.
And what in android system ( like what apps ) are taking the battery.
Disable background activity for Android System.
Also, I get upto 10-12% consumption by Android system by the end of the battery without disabling background activity for it (10-12% turn out to be 50% of what screen consumes); though my SOT is consistently above 6Hrs.
Test the battery endurance in general and then judge if Android System power draw matters much.
interesting thread. For android system I also get 50% of what SOT consumes ... And I wonder what it can be and what are the consequences of denying background activity to it (activated the switch just now, I'll see if it changes something for me). I hope it does not disable notifications and so on ...
See the drain by Android system despite of disabling background activity.
It did not affect battery endurance; I'm getting am most same as what i was getting earlier.

You have 7 and a half hours of SOT and you complain? Your battery is not draining, you are using the phone, and the battery life is excellent.
Also more than 24 Hours of complete battery life on that SOT. This is incredible, I do not get any close to that. I am assuming that you are just trolling.

I was telling OP that:
1. Things can improve slightly if he disables background activity for Android System
2. Android System consuming 50% as much power as Screen does not necessarily mean that it is the cause for bad battery endurance
I was giving example of good battery life despite of that 50% thing.

See the drain by Android system despite of disabling background activity.
It did not affect battery endurance; I'm getting am most same as what i was getting earlier.

I don't have a problem.
My battery life (if you see the screenshot) is already excellent in my opinion with 2 SIM.
Shifting to single SIM didn't make any difference since network coverage is good almost always for me (I stay in a metropolitan).
I have already used the phone single SIM for a few days while it was new without any difference. Battery life was wise back then since phone was still adapting to the usage pattern though.

Poor battery life for me as well. Barely 15 hours with 3 hours SOT. With a custom ROM I got good battery life for a day or 2 and then back to square one.
I guess I will have to live with performance like many others.
Exynos btw.

click on it in the battery menu and you will see a toggle for "Allow background activity". Just disable it.

Even i had poor battery. I did a factory reset. Reinstalled all apps separatley. Restored only contacts and sms. Formatted my old memory card. Now on wifi i get almost 7 hrs sot with more than 24 hrs battery. On 4G i get5.5 hrs sot with 18 to 20 hrs battery
You guys might want to try turning off "Find My Mobile" in Settings
I used to have a mediocre battery life, but after turning off "Find My Mobile", I am having good battery life even over 4G averaging at 4h30m to 5h30m SOT with medium usage

limiting android system background usage had no effect.

BBS is BetterBatteryStats ... You can download from PlayStore/XDA
You can use the app to detect which apps are using how much of your battery percentage. However, you have to use adb to enable more stats inside the app. Using adb requires a PC
Guys I am also experiencing the same battery drain with android system. I mean it's the second in the list almost equal to screen. My SOT is 3 and half hours max. Tried factory reset and all. Restored apps manually too. Guess Samsung should release a patch for it. Mainly beaming services, Bixby, AnT+Hal keeps running in the background I guess.

Question December update, battery drain.

Since the December update, I've got massive battery drain. The latest session for accubattery has only 11% deep sleep while the screen is off. 35% battery usage over 6 hours with 46m SOT. Has the adaptive battery reset? Any ideas please?
Oh I'm really hope not. I just got tired of waiting and side loaded it. I will have to monitor this and see
I did a clean flash and mines the opposite.
feels cold in the hand and battery flat lines.
Ok think I have found the culprit, mobile network standby, 27% from the pixel battery app. Any ideas what I can do please?

I did mine OTA, would factory reset do it? I think the fault is mobile network standby, used 27%

When I first got the phone I had an issue like that. Try turning the phone off (not reboot) and then powering on after a minute or so. When I did that last build it built cache or did something different and the issue went away.
I'd try that before factory resetting.

There have been some reports on Reddit of decreased reception in areas it was good before. Might be switching often between 5G and LTE or lower .
Thought it was just me. my phone is a lot lower than normal at this time of day. definitely got some form of battery drain going on.
Same here, noticed cell reception poorer than it was, likely the reason for battery drain constantly looking for better reception.

Ditto....
My last post was 24 minutes ago and I’ve dropped 3% battery in that time with the screen off and phone on standby.
I'm kinda noticing some drain as well, looked at battery, to my surprise 37% mobile network standby time. Smh. Clean install of December update.
Just in case it's relevant, I'm using an esim only.

Did a clean install change anything?
I still don't have the update and now I am worried. Does anyone not have a battery issue?

I don't. I have standby at 25% about but the battery lasts all day from 90%. Overnight about 0.7%/hour. Seems fine for me.

I don't. Accubattery reports 5.4%/h with screen on and 1.0%/h with screen off, pretty much the same as before the update.
I had battery drain after the update but it appears to be network/signal related. Always get 4G in my home but now only get H. Turning off WiFi left my phone with no mobile signal but seems to fixed with a couple of reboots. Signal is definitely no where as good.
