Verizon ppl: Best Unlocked Phone That Takes Roms? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now I'm on Verizon w/ a Nexus 5x running CM13 and Xposed. I want something with a larger screen as my phone has become almost my laptop. I know Verizon can be a bit tricky with running unlocked phones and custom Roms. I'm not really interested in buying a used branded Verizon phone and running LG/Samsung version of Android. What are my best options here? Are you on Verizon and what do you use? My price range is 300-425$

G2 vs Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Title says it all.
I'm currently on an HTC One but have the option to change phones via company contract.
Now, I am happy with the One but getting an itch to switch.
How does the G2 compare against the One and S4 in terms of hardware?
Also, how much custom development will be going into the G2?

This is something I have been thinking about as well. However because the S4 and HTC One have Google Editions i am sure those are going to get better Dev support. The G2 is better hardware wise. Only time will tell when it comes to dev support. You may want to wait and see what the Nexus 5 looks like in the next month or two and then pick.

Out of all those phone the HTC One will have the better development. It has an unlockable bootloader and is the exact same as the international version, google version, and all other GSM versions.
The rest of the choice is completely user pref. 5.0 AMOLED vs. 4.7 SUPER LCD vs. 5.2 IPS LCD, plastic vs. metal, TW vs. LG vs. Sense, Ultra Pixel vs. 13 MP, HUGE BATTERY vs. 2300 mah vs. 2600 removable, future updates for the next few android version (HTC's and Samsung's track record) vs. Questionable updates if any, perfect Google Edition experience vs. possibly never having it, 800 snapdragon vs. 600, and the list goes on.
With the locked bootloader it will slow down development for a while and might even turn people away from this phone. Only time will tell... Just do not buy a phone assuming that the bootloader will be hacked because it may not. Buy it because you like it as is

unlockable bootloader? Only very limited HTC Ones were unlocked on Verizon via htcdev.com. This was quickly shut down a few hours after release. The bootloader is locked, and currently there is no way to unlock. Development is slow on the VZW side.
The sgs4 has much more dev due to Loki and a lot more phones being unlocked at this time.

I did not know you were talking about the verizon model. Only the Verizon model blocks the unlock, all the rest (Sprint, Tmobile, AT&T) accept it (last time I checked)
With verizon aside compare the development for the AT&T S4 and HTC One and you will see what I mean.

[Q] Not sure which variant to get.

I am in the process of selling my iphone to buy the m8. I am buying non subsidized and was wondering which variant would be the best for flashing roms and possibly doing the GPe conversions. Should I spend a little more to get either the unlocked or developer edition, or would the AT&T variant work fine after being unlocked?
Thanks!
get the unlocked.
if you are already decided on rooting and flashing to GPe roms why would you even consider the ATT variant? too bad too cuz you missed out on the $649 pricing for the unlocked. it's $700 now

Question before ordering a Z2

Hey all, I am very interested in this phone, but I have a question...
I had the Z1s on T-Mobile, and as far as I remember, it wasn't rootable, and I couldn't put my custom rom on there. Is this possible with the Z2? I would love to have a stock Google rom on there if possible, as I am not a fan of the Sony skin and bloatware, but I am loving the phone design, and camera.
Just make sure you buy one with an unlockable bootloader (not carrier branded) and root is no problem
I was planning on ordering through Amazon, I believe it says it is unlocked.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-FACTORY-...qid=1401772900&sr=8-2&keywords=sony+xperia+z2
Will that work on T-Mobile?
Yes - I'm using it on tmobile. It gets LTE.

I'm also looking at getting a Z2 to use on T-Mobile in the US. I hope this unit you linked to is bootloader unlockable. Is this the lowest price you have found? I'm searching high and low for the best price before pulling the trigger.
Thats the best price that I've found online.

Which S6 Edge variant should I purchase?

Hey! This is my first post on the forums, so correct me if this is in the wrong section or anything of that nature. Anyway, I've been interested in purchasing a Galaxy S6 Edge for a while now. I currently use a Nexus 4 on the daily, and I love the Edge's similarly beautiful design. I am going to buy the phone unlocked, as I have never been and will never be locked into a service contract. Right now I use Cricket Wireless in the United States. (which operates on At&t's towers). Cricket only sells the not-so-edgy galaxy s6, but I should be able to use any gsm model on the carrier. I was wondering if there are any reasons to pick one variant over another? Could the non carrier specific ones will receive updates quicker? Or maybe US specific models will operate better in the US (reception wise)? Do some get more developer support from the community for rooting and rom development? Is there even a difference (perhaps not)? These are all just random examples that come to mind. I just want to make sure I'm not hit with any curve ball when making such a large purchase. In any case, it's sure to be an upgrade from 2012. Thanks in advance

The unlocked, unbranded international edition will get you the fastest updates.
Although I have not personally researched it, I have heard from other users that it gets LTE connectivity on AT&T's network, so you are good there.
If you buy any other Variant, updates will be slower.
I would discourage the purchase of the AT&T variant because it is the only one that has not been updated to 5.1
Just make sure you are very careful with where you are buying.
I have heard plenty of stories of people buying the Galaxy S6 online and either it is counterfeit, was stolen, or KNOX had been tripped.

Oh thanks a lot. I didn't even think about counterfeit or stolen devices. But it sounds like international is the way to go
In India, 99% of mobile phones fall into the "unlocked" and "international" version. Carrier based phones are extremely rare.
Since you are from a different country, I suggest you email and ask Samsung about it, because like the others said, could be counterfeit, stolen or KNOX tripped.

Which model is the best one to get?

Hey everyone,
I've been looking for a new phone for some time now. I was playing around based on specifications I'd like my next phone to have, I currently have a Oneplus One and would like something a little more updated. I found the G5 to meet my requirements but it seems there are a ton of models and I'm not quite sure which one is good? I intend to root/rom/etc so which one would you guys recommend getting for someone with T-Mobile? Thanks in advance

Besides the H830 (which TMobile doesn't sell any longer the only other US model that is unlockable is the RS988. B&H photo has them on sale for 250 right now. They are brand new with full warranty. I just bought one from there last month which I rooted an am using on Verizon. I had the VS987 prior and also the H830. Which I rooted. But had an issue getting it sim unlocked for other carriers. The only thing that the RS988 can't do is wifi calling but I've never needed that anyway. The RS988 I got from B&H also was manufactured in 3/2017 so they have newer builds not old stock laying around. Verizon recently stopped selling this phone as well so it's only a matter of time before there are no new ones left.
Good Luck
