Same price as the Amazon version at $150, but without ads. Now I understand why Root Junkys Amazon debloat files install CC apps. I guess he got their files. I wonder if the CC version has its own ROM/firmware and if it's bootloader is locked.

Edit: CC phones are locked, although they use AT&T and T-Mobile service. Ebay has unlock codes for $3-5 for other Moto phones on CC. I wonder if G4 codes will show eventually.
Phones sold by Consumer Cellular are designed to work specifically on our service. To allow us to make them more affordable for our customers, Consumer Cellular sells them at a price that is actually below cost. To help offset this loss, phones can only be used with Consumer Cellular service for the first six months they are in use. After that, customers may request that the phone be unlocked so long as the device has been paid in full, and the account in question is not past due.

I have several CC Moto phones and they are all unlocked. The updates do get CC's approval before release but I have gone through 2 soak tests with the G2 and the G3 with no problems. The only software they include is the CC app.
Why not just get the unlocked version of the Moto G4 from Motorola? That's what I have and I have had no issues transferring carriers with it. Honestly, I think it would be worth it to spend a little extra for it. You could even do the $25 a month thing that Motorola has going on. (Or at least did.)

I have one CC Moto phone left since my other one burned up but it's pretty much a wash. Every phone I've gotten from them has an unlocked sim so it will work with any US carrier. They also have an easy pay no interest plan. I guess the nice thing if you're going to buy retail is buying it at Sears or Target and getting their extended warranty that's really cheap. Then if it fails, just take it to Sears and exchange it for another no questions asked.
Given the CC and Amazon versions are $150, the CC phone seems better if it is network unlocked (who knows under Lenovo management). Even if the bootloader is locked, you don't get ads on the CC version.

I know the CC phones will work on AT&T and T-Mobile and should work on any US carrier. You used to get the Consumer Cellular splash screen on boot but I haven't even seen that on any Moto phones. You do get the CC app but that can be disabled. Unless they changed it on the G4 they can be unlocked and rooted.

That must have changed then. The G2 I purchased from Sears year before last wasn't network locked.

So I'm going to have to assume that since the phone is exclusive (at the moment) to AT&T that they'll do what they did to everyone with the Lumia 900 and not allow it to be carrier unlocked.
Anyone else feel the same? I highly recommend this time around that people wait for any confirmation or confirmed reports of unlocking BEFORE actually buying this phone. I for one didn't enjoy looking at my 900 sitting in my drawer for 2 months before I sold it and took a hit on my wallet.
None, mine is locked
Its locked! I bought an at&t 920 with no contract from best buy and the phone is locked... my tmobile card got discriminated against as soon as I entered it... hopefully straight talk doesn't get the same redhead stepchild treatment as well...
6 month carrier exclusivity...
You can expect any new phones from AT&T, not just 900 and 920, have the same treatment. Hardly anything new. Even the old Galaxy S2 which was released to 3 carriers at the same time get the same 6-month lock out period.
I bought mine off contract and called ATT to get an unlock code. They took my IMEI, submitted a request, and said I should hear back in 3-5 business days. Will let you guys know how it goes.

Yes, you can buy an off contract 920 from AT&T store. But whether or not you will get unlock code from AT&T is crap shot. Some may get lucky but most will be denied for the so called exclusivity period.

For other brands, eBay typically is pretty good. But if pass experience with Nokia Lumia 900 holds true, you won't get unlock code from other places either.

does this mean its the most stable way to get unlock code?
does it have a risk?
i dont want to buy a lock 920 back to Europe but i cant use it ._.
I wouldn't buy one from US AT&T despite the price.
Chances are you won't be able to unlock it for 6 months and then have it useless for that time.
Canadian Rogers is the best bet if you could get it somehow as they're apparently unlocked.

I'm not sure what you mean there. But what I said is that there was NO unlock code can be obtained ANYWHERE in first 6 months for Nokia L900. I expect L920 is the same. All the ebay unlock vendors share the same database and most of them will take your payment first. Then after a while they will refund your money due to unable to find unlock code for you. Typically, you can buy unlock code for Samsung phones rather fast. HTC, maybe a few weeks or month or two after release. But Nokia seems to keep its unlock code database rather tight.

It's not certain if Rogers ones will continue being unlocked. The ones they were selling were part of some weird early batch (many are speculating they were related to the //build DEV phones). The phone still isn't listed on their website and they still haven't given a release date (even though they technically already released it by selling a small batch).

I have confidence that Roger version is unlocked because I heard someone said that Roger only has 1 month exclusive. Also, expecting in stock for these at Roger will begin tomorrow and Microsoft CA said in a FB post that Roger will start selling phones on 11/13.
Confirmed no Unlock Code
Received an official "yea L920 can't be unlocked right now bc Nokia won't let us" reply after ordering it from the only place I found that listed the L920 AND allowed me to order it (see attached). American cell carriers suck (excluding Tmobile bc they don't care what phone you have)...and we wonder why the rest of the world hates America! Spend $500 retail and can't drive 20 minutes into Mexico and use your phone.

For $99 with a free wireless charging pad, 99% of the users will care less about unlockability of the phone. They will drive to Mexico and continue use their phone alright then come back crying wolf when they received their bill.
Rest of the world don't subsidize cell phones as much as US. Most ppl buy their phones at full price. Imagine you have to buy all your phones at $500 to $800 a piece, what will you say?
Unlocked w/o Subsidy vs. Locked w/Subsidy
If you read my post, I paid $500 retail for my phone...I did NOT get a subsidized phone. I understand if AT&T had said "get it for $99, no unlock...buy it for $500...get it unlocked." Instead, they said, buy it for $500 like the rest of the world...still get screwed. Big difference! I am from Africa...born and raised...traveled to 37 countries so I know all about Subsidy vs Retail pricing. It's the pay-full-price-and-still-get-screwed mentality of AT&T that bothers me.
(And before someone says, then why didn't you buy it from Rogers unlocked instead of AT&T...I'll respond...this is my 3rd phone - Galaxy Note, L920 and iPhone - and I love hacking with phones and figuring them out so I bought this on my friends ATT account for retail since I wanted the white and at the time no one online including Rogers had the white one available).

I know you paid retail price and know how you feel. But in US, majoity of ppl don't pay retail and could care less about unlock. The No.1 cell phone carrier is Verizon where most of its phones are CDMA only. There is no such thing as unlocked for CDMA phones. Neither Verizon, nor Sprint will alow any phone that does not have its brand name printd on into its network As such, most pp won't think their carrier suck because of lack of unlock. If you think you paid retail and deserve unlock code, you don't know anything about US carriers.
<end of debate...back to productive thread>
This is my last reply...I won't use a valuable thread to argue:
- I posted my confirmation so others knew not to waste their time right now with the very few who claim to be able to Unlock the L920.
- I knew ATT wouldn't give me an unlock code or unlocked phone, I had HOPED they would do the right thing for full-retail customers. I'm not complaining...I'm trying to find a solution so I can help others who don't know as much how they can get theirs unlocked. I'm not naive...but that doesn't change the fact that ATT selling a full retail phone without giving you an unlock code is still wrong...and no I didn't expect them to do the right thing...they're a US carrier!!
- I do know the carriers...and you absolutely can put a non-Sprint and/or non-Verizon phone or device on their network. I have taken a Sprint MIFI device, registered it and used it on my Verizon data service. My close friend works for VZ wireless as an device SE and he confirms they do this all the time, they just don't market it nor do they want the 80% to know you can do this so they lie and tell you you can't. I've had friends do the same with a smartphone they purchased from Verizon and moved over to Sprint...same process. Push them hard enough, they'll add the other device to their network as long as it's CDMA.
- I'm here to help others find the "Gevey Unlock" equivalent for the L920...not debate the debacle of US carriers Let's refocus to finding a workaround/hack/something to help get the L920's that are locked or crippled working better for the users of the forums
<end of thread...back to the Unlock or No-Unlock/Help-Find-a-Solution thread>
At target and sears consumer cellular has replaced the 2013 Moto G with the new Moto E Lte. Consumer cellular runs on AT&Ts network, and are sim locked to it. However the 2013 moto G wasnt sim locked and the bootloader could be unlocked. the 2014 Moto G was sim locked but couyld be easily unlocked and its bootloader allowed unlocking.
Has anyone here purchased the CC version? its $99 at target or sears, and Its the XT1527 model. I'm wondering if the bootloader is unlockable on this version or if CC decided to make it like the cricket version and have the bootloader screw us over?
and im curious if the Boost version is the xt1528 like the verizon model? If I read right it can have the bootloader unlocked and it would support T-mobiles LTE bands. If thats the case I might end up picking that up and flashing a custom rom and giving one to my girl to use.
Bump this folks. I would like to know. Looks like Target has the moto E 2015 Consumer cellular version on sale for 50 bucks.. not bad if you can root and put a regular moto e rom .. Would be a nice backup phone.
As far as I know, neither the XT1527 nor XT1528 are unlockable.

While consumer cellular runs on ATTs network, being an independent MVNO they partner with manufacturers themselves to release the phone in a CC brand box. I've used other CC phones that I bought and unlocked and they all had unlockable bootloader, but I always am cautious in case they do change. The moto G and G ext(2014) both could have bootloader unlocked while ATT/Cricket branded ones still forbade it

Yesterday my brother purchased the CC MOTO E and wants me to uninstall all the data apps, such as Hangouts and Chrome. He wants to keep Gmail and the Messaging SMS app, but has no desire to use web data on the device. Thus he went with the $5 1500 text plan and it only has 150MB of data. So, can I root his phone and uninstall these apps? In the about phone it says its a XT1527 MOTO E (2nd generation) and the box is a Consumer Cellular MOTO E LTE.

B&H site now says May 1st. I called LG but was unable to get any scoop.
It would be great to get feedback from the forum on whether it would make sense to wait for the unlocked version or just get the T mobile verison now.
Thx
The RS988 would work just fine on T-Mobile. It will most likely receive less updates than the T-Mobile variant. For example the US991 Unbranded G4 that B&H sells still doesn't have Marshmallow. I'd assume the trend to continue.
RS988 comes SIM unlocked out of the box.. while the T-Mobile version does not but depending on if you buy it outright or are in good standing sometimes T-Mobile will unlock the SIM.
Bootloader on the RS988 will be locked. I'd expect T-Mobiles version to have a better shot at bootloader unlock... but maybe not. RS988 certainly has no edge over the T-Mobile version here tho. Both are locked at the moment. T-Mobil's may eventually get unlocked officially from T-Mobil update in the future... RS988 has no shot at that and it will take a bootloader exploit to unlock.
You can't really lose either way in my opinion... though you get more free perks with the T-Mobile version. Free 360 camera for those who buy tmo model until April 5th (tomorrow).. on top of the battery.

I can't say this is reliable yet as B&H model isn't actually available yet but I emailed them last week about this , tech support guy named Adam emailed back this week saying the bootloader is unlocked, I emailed back asking if he knew the difference between sims unlocked and bootloader unlocked, he said yes and confirmed bootloader also unlocked- I am a skeptic until I see it but, imho I do think it would give them an edge in sales and they have no vested interest in the carriers so I'm waiting to see (I also want it now but...) I also wonder if software will have less bloat. I'm thinking that all US models will all be locked but LG will give the unlock codes out for international models as they are claiming to be friendly to developers, and B&H has a good chance to be in that same boat. Still have hope for this
Only one bloat app on tmobile are T mobile acct app....evrythig else you can delete
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Another thing that has me scratching my head, is how come they're the only ones that are selling this model?
I tried looking elsewhere online and don't see any major retailer selling it.
B&H model thoughts
I am still waiting to see what B&H model looks like (mostly because the money is short this month) but after reading more on this thread, I am leaning more towards the T-Mobile version, mainly because I would probably get better product support should the phone have problems in the beginning, also willing to wait for unlock when/if it comes. mail orders are risky and no one knows what this variant will be like until they get one and then they would probably have to deal with LG for problems after 30 days - while B&H doesn't have a vested interest in carriers, they also don't have an interest in getting the bootloader unlocked (if locked, and this sounds likely despite what I was told).
T-Mobile also has EVS out of the box
Another reason to consider the T-Mobile version is it has Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) enabled out of the box where as the unlocked version may never get it. Might not be a big deal but if your on T-Mobile already, why not go with it.

update on B&H vs T-Mobile version bands
I just found a post here at xda forums about the variant lg g5 models - what I've been waiting for to make a decision on T-Mobile vs B&H choice. this may or may not matter to everyone. I notice a slight difference in the bands among variants, might be important to allow full range of carriers before deciding. I would look at this link to see if the missing bands are important (T-Mobile is not very good in my area so having more available bands in the B&H model would be important to me if these stats are accurate.

Well if u paid full for the phone from samsung it should be unlocked to use with any network.
you can unlock from att. Just wait a week or two for samsung to sent the EMEI to ATT. Or do what I did, contact ATT over facebook and explained that you paid in full. It may take several tries with different rep, but you will eventually get one rep that will open a ticket for you.

I would submit the request again if you haven't bought a 3rd party unlock yet cause it's free from att.

I am curious as to why you bought the ATT version vs the standard unlocked version?

I got mine and of April it was on sale for $639. Traded in my backup s7 (I'm coming from note 8) for an extra $200 so $466.**after tax was my total. Plus I should have a Dex pad coming any day now. (Have a Dex station already I only used twice, for sale if anyone interested lol)
You can do it 3rd party faster. I had the same problem with a note 8. It takes about 3 months for it to show up on ATT unlock site. Easier to pay 10$ on ebay and be done with it.
Att website work when the phone is not under contract, but if you still owed money on it better use a third party service..we had a great experience with this guy samattunlock.com
Hello,
Hoping someone can help me, full disclosure, I haven't done any research yet, just looking for a quick yes/no answer. I currently have a P2XL, going to be upgrading to the pixel 6 soon. I know when I got my current phone in 2017, in order to root it, it had to come from Google and not Verizon. I'm going to be switching to Xfinity when I get my new phone, as far as rooting goes does it matter who I buy it from?
Appreciate the help,
Dan
I would highly recommend getting an unlocked phone but I would also highly recommend you get it from Amazon instead of Google. The customer service from Google is horrible if anything goes wrong. You can get an unlocked phone from Amazon the next day in many cases.

I came from a 2XL. The same restrictions that applied to the 2XL apply with the 6, i.e. do NOT purchase from Verizon or Best Buy. Both only sell units with locked bootloaders, leaving you high and dry.
Stick with Amazon or Google and you should be fine. However, you do want to make sure the device you buy from Amazon is not a Verizon model.

Thanks, appreciate both responses. Google is appealing because of monthly payments, but I'll definitely check out prices from Amazon.
Thanks for the help.
Made an account just to say YES! Xfinity is very similar to Verizon in the way that every phone you buy from them is locked and is difficult to unlock. Amazon or google store is what I'd recommend.

Yes, but we are not talking about carrier locking, but bootloader locking. The two are mutually exclusive: carrier locks (which are legal in the US) aren't predicated on a bootloader lock (also legal in the US).
We tell people to stay away from Verizon and AT&T-branded devices because the bootloaders cannot be unlocked. Verizon and AT&T will remove the carrier lock after 90 days of service have elapsed, but they flat out refuse to ever unlock the bootloader.

Carrier branded phones have one benefit and that's you can roll the cost into your monthly plan and not be subject to either another credit check or large one time bill. However, it's playing with fire as you mentioned. Carrier unlock yes, but being allowed to bootloader unlock is quite another. Verizon is completely locked down not 100% on ATT. But one other reason to buy from Google if you can afford it is that if something goes wrong with the device they will replace it (refurb natch) on a cross ship. Meaning once you get the replacement you have 30 days to send back the old one so you're never out a phone. I've availed myself of that option numerous times. It only took one time for me to get caught out on that to vow never again.
