Axon 7 A2017G reception strength - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi,
Yesterday I've received the Axon 7 global from Amazon Spain.
Globally I'm very happy with it. My only complaint is the mobile network reception. But I'm not unhappy at all with it, because download speed and connection stability seems better than my old S7 Edge.
But if you enter in setting/about phone/SIM Status signal is almost always @-100dBm or higher, and theoretically that's not good...
This is my status right now, 4/5 bars, but 104dBm, Internet working fine:

Since i had my A2017G-B03 yesterday, the first thing i noticed was the bad signal strength in my house comparing to my other working phones (the ZOPO zp999 and my Huawei Y6).
With my 2 other phones i always have a decent 4g and a rather good signal strenght when calling.
With this phone....it is clearly worse :
1. no 4G in my house (except when standing before a window; outside and in my car : good quality and no problems so far)
2. when making phone calls , sometimes the signal becomes too weak i can heardly hear the conversation. I have to recall. So much worse then i am used to

LTE -104 dB and 36 ASU is very good LTE signal. In case of LTE the problematic range begins under 120 dB.
Do not mix it with 3G value. In that case red zone is already under 102 dB.

I have att in the United States, and the axon 7 has one of the best signals of any phone i have used.

Oh! I didn't know :/ That's make sense, because Internet is working flawlessly and without disconnections.
Thanks!

I heard about all the reception problems with the Axon 7 but I said I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and it does seem to be a bit worse the other phones I've had but it's not something that will throw me off this phone because everything else about it is brilliant. And besides I live in Ireland in a pretty remote place so it's doing well for that haha.

Sprint Signal Bars

Can someone help me to understand what I'm seeing? I'm at work, and saw that I had full bars on my phone. Thinking, ''Hey, full signal, gonna download the latest myn.'' But the network connection was horribly slow.

So I ask, what does the signal bars actually mean? If not connection, then what?
Just because you have strong signal strength doesn't mean your connection will be fast. If the towers are bogged down with a lot if users in your area at the time you could be standing next to the tower and have a slow connection. Same goes for as to whether it not sprint is having network issues at the time. Happens to me everytime I go to a sporting event or major concert.... Strong signal but slowass network speed.

The signal bars are a visual representation of your connection to the voice network, which is completely independent from and far more reliable than their 3g network. On AOSP ROMs however, this is the opposite, the signal bars show your data connection instead of voice network connection.
You could use an app like Signal Status to show your -dBm readings for both CDMA and EVDO. It will give you a better idea of your signal strength. The lower your -dBm the stronger the signal.

True. I have noticed that.

I didn't realize there was a dual connection. Now that explains a lot!

[Q] True Connection (3g and H+)

So I just finished flashing the True Connection mod from UnNamed and noticed I am on 3g.
Yesterday I noticed when I was a few cities up north from my area my signal bar turned green, does that mean it was actually H+ or I just had really good connection?

I never had it shown green and drove mostly all over south Florida except one area in Dania Beach so I was rather confused if it was bad or good till I Googled it.
My speeds are great and I really don't need them faster, its twice as fast as my iPhone 3gs, when downloading files its around 600kb/s which is plenty fast.
Wifi Tethering:
Right now its bouncing between H+ and 3g depending where I am in the house.
So I am a little confused...
Im curious...what did you expect from the true connection mod?

Well I didn't know what it was till I read this:
Simba501 said:
By default, the status bar shows HSPA (H) as the connection even if UMTS (3G) is active. HSPA is only in use when data is actually being used. In idle, it goes back to UMTS (3G). The addon will show this if you flash it. In areas where there is only UMTS (3G), this will be indicated by the addon as well. AT&T defaults to showing HSPA for everything because they want to pull the wool over their users' eyes, and make them believe they have HSPA everywhere they go.

I just don't get how the signal and speeds relate.
I would think a good connection would get you the best speeds but maybe I am missing a whole lot more stuff that I don't understand.

Hey LilChris06, are you the mod from OCN?
On topic:
Samsung's default setting is to give you the H+ symbol at all times, even though you may be connected to 4g or 3g. The "true connection mod" you flashed just changes the symbol to show you what you really are on, as the quote states.
As for your question, there are more complications to it, but generally yes, good connection does mean good speeds.
So you got 3G = UMTS
and the H = HSDPA, which in laymens would a "3.5G" in relation to 3G
H+ is an upgraded version of HSDPA, which occurred in 2008.

I'm getting horrible 4G speeds.

Each of these tests is 4G LTE:

I feel lucky if I ever get over 5 megabits. This is my first LTE phone and I don't have another Verizon LTE device to see if it's just my S4 or the network. Should I be calling Verizon to complain?
What was the signal strength like at the time of the speed test? Also try changing the test site to another one near you.
The screenshot looks like your on WIFI...

I was on WiFi when I took the screenshot but all the test were done on LTE. I usually only have 2 or 3 bars of signal strength. All the tests were done within a 20 mile radius.
I don't believe that calling Verizon would make a difference, considering that your down/upload speeds are directly related to your location. Have your speeds always been like this?

I was in a known great speed/coverage area less than 4 miles from me... couldn't muster speeds faster than 24mpbs. Switched to a server 400 miles away and got 57mbps. Try different servers.
I would say its your current network conditions and not your phone. Check out the article posted by droid life.

Note the average speed for Verizon at 9.61 mbps download.

They've been like this ever since I got the phone which was only 5 days ago. Usually 2mbps or less with a couple outliers that hit 12+.

I just tried different servers and it didn't make much of a difference.
Is there a way to force this phone to 3G speeds? It's been so long since I tested those on my old phone I don't even remember what I was getting. It seems like they were close to 1mbps though.
Are those all in the same location? Try going somewhere else.
It would be worthwhile calling, just mention the <1Mbps speeds though, because anything between 5-12Mbps is considered normal.

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.

Yes
The device supports dual 4 G with dual volte and it is a great thing because it is one of the most rarest think that you will be finding in this price range in all other phones and definitely I would like to tell you that in the scenario when I was getting no signal with the 4 G in one building now I am getting more than half of the signal bar at the same place I would definitely say that it is a very good upgrade over my previous phone now
hats off to the company
Has anyone tested this out in the US? This looks like my dream phone but frequencycheck says that only 1 of the 4 AT&T LTE bands are supported. What will this affect - data throughput or signal reception? or is it not worth worrying about at all, since I do have at least one band to work with?

I am not from US but AFAIK your signal reception itself won't be affected but your LTE might. If you can manage it with 3g then great.
Go for the 602KL variant , but you still might face the above mentioned issue.
Better for you to check with offical asus website, customer care (duh) or their offical forums.
Or reddit might be your best option.

I agree dude. The transfer speeds were pretty good until the last two upgrades. It was worse but after I wiped cache and reseted network preferences, it's a bit better now

Question Pixel 6 Modem

I am not getting the same internet speed as I was getting on my op7t pro while on mobile data. Did any one face the same issue? I also noticed that internet is not working while on call.
Yes, my pixel 6 had struggled with speed/service compared to any other phone I own.
Hope this can be improved by futuer updates

Same here
Reviews have commented on this. The P6 has a Samsung modem while virtually every other phone in America has a Qualcomm one.
I too am hoping Google can pull some firmware magic for it.

i was getting good speed on my oneplus 7t pro. in op it was showing 4g+ but in pixekl it is showing LTE only.
Yeah, I dont know. Google is a ****. Unsupported countries cant have 5g, volte, vowifi and looks like also 4g+. Also the modem is a couple years old and gets way worse signal strength then other devices. Where my pixel 2xl gets -75 dcb, the 6 gets -95. Same sim card.

I'm getting very good speed on my pixel 6
Just pathetic. Luckily T-Mobile letting me return it.
I think many operators use different vendors' kit in their Radio Access Network, different firmware in that, and different configuration/settings for it. Of course they're all supposed to comply with standards but this would explain on our P6's so far unoptimized firmware:
The variability over standby battery consumption due to network standby (much worse for some)
The variability over max 5G data rates (much worse for some)
Why Google were under pressure for a quick fix for some operators in the US (the Nov update only folk in the US got). Maybe those operator's customers were severely affected.
Hopefully successive optimizations are possible that will fix these issues for most. Crossing fingers that's the case and doesn't take too long. Next drop should be next week based on the recent cadence...
