I just bought Redmi Note 3 SD. I am running the latest global stable build based on LP. I wanted to move to Global Beta Builds. I tried to flash the recovery zip using updater app. But it always showed "couldn't verify update package".
So i searched a bit. And think it requires bootloader to be unlocked first. But I have some doubts :
1) After unlocking bootloader can I flash global beta recovery rom zip using updater app ? Or fastboot is the only method even after unlocking bootloader ?
2) If I am stuck at 50% during the unlocking process, will the phone wont boot not anymore ? Or I can boot it just like it was before ?
3) Does data gets wiped during bootloader unlocking ?
Thanx in advance...

1. Any rom that supports flashing through recovery can be flashed through the recovery.
2. If you are stuck at 50% while unlocking your phones boot loader, don't worry. Your phone will boot and work just fine.
3. Nothing will be wiped after unlocking your phones boot loader, everything stays the way it is.
I hope I answered your questions

And you don't need an unlocked bootloader to flash the beta global MM ROM. You can use miflash and flash the phone in edl mode. If you take a backup in MIUI first, you can restore all your apps and data too. If you're even braver, you can replace the stock recovery image in the ROM with ZXCTWRP at the same time so you can flash SuperSU, Xposed, etc. all with a locked bootloader.
Download an older dev build like 6.8.18 which should work through the updater app, then you can go to 6.9.29 after that.

No, you don't need unlocked bootloader to flash latest Global beta. What you need to do is boot to EDL mode and flash Global Beta through MiFlash tool.
TIP Make sure fist that your device is properly recognized by your PC through correct drivers. Usually the MiFlash drivers are sufficient but I had problems with the MTP driver so I had to search the internet for this

I don't think so since your error seem to depend on the updater app, and not the bootloader
TIP If you do decide to unlock bootloader, try to unlock in your current ROM first before flashing Global Beta. In my case, I applied for permission on Day1, Got my permission on Day 3, Failed to unlock until Day 5 where I EDL flashed Global beta and I was able to unlock by then. I think I could have unlocked faster if I EDL flashed Global Beta earlier

No. Data gets wiped when you flash something in fastboot/EDL or when you wipe it in custom recovery
Other Info
ROM that came with the Phone is official MIUI 7.2.3
Global beta I flashed is 6.9.22
After unlocking bootloader, I flashed ZCX TWRP
After Flashing ZCX TWRP, I flashed xiaomi.eu ROM 6.9.29 and got bootloop. To fix this I had to flash LazyFlasher.zip after xiaomi.eu ROM and then did a factory reset via TWRP

I unlocked the device bootloader via unofficial method by flashing the fastboot rom with modified emmc and running the fastboot oem unlock-go command. Everything is successfully done. Now I am a little confused about which recovery I have to flash to install custom ROMs and which one is safe for me and which one will cause boot loop problems? should i flash the safe twrp or the cofface version?

Yes you can use Alka TWRP for Backing up everything including the EFS and FSG partitions.

I didn't restore any backup since I do not have Miui backed up previously all I did was flashed the fastboot Miui8 rom via miflash and went successfully without error so I proceed immediately to fastboot mode to unlock bootloader via miunlock and it goes 100% this time.

So, if I am understanding correctly, you unlocked unofficially and then went back to the miunlock tool and completed unlocking there. Sorry, I missed this part earlier. I suppose it should be unlocked officially.
So I've read a lot of guides but a few questions still remain unanswered am hoping anyone here can shed some light
-> can I unlock on global stable (Lollipop) miui 7 version 8.0.2.0 (on which am currently on) or do I have to flash global developer rom to be able to unlock ?
-> can I use updater app to switch from stable to developer ? or do I need to use fastboot rom ?
Now on rooting
-> Can I simply install a twrp of my choice and flash super su with it to get root ?
->Do I need to flash universal boot img patcher before or after super su ?
->do I need to flash lazy flasher ?
Some people say simply flash supersu in any twrp to get root others say also flash ubp first! others say also lazy flasher
which is true ?
What's the difference between universal boot image patcher and lazy flasher ?
My aim is to simply root

FOR YOUR FIRST QUESTION: YES YOU CAN. I JUST TODAY UNLOCKED IN 8.0.2
2ND:YES YOU CAN SWITCH VIA UPDATER FROM STABLE TO DEVELOPER. BUT NOT SURE WHETHER CAN BE FROM STABLE LOLLIPOP TO DEVELOPER MARSHMALLOW. IT SHOULD WORK THOUGH,
3RD:YES YOU CAN SIMPLY FLASH SUPERSU.ZIP.... BUT UNLOCK BOOTLOADER VIA OFFICIAL WAY.ITS BETTER AND HASSELFREE FOR FUTURE.
4TH AND 5TH:I HAVENT USED UBP TILL NOW. ITS NOT THAT IMPORTANT. U CAN FLASH TWRP RECOVERY WITH LAZY FLASHER. WHEN YOU INSTALL MIUI VIA TWRP SIMPLY FLASH LAZY FLASHER AND SUPER SU AFTERWARDS. AND IT WILL WORK WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.
http://en.miui.com/thread-283146-1-1.html for info..
if you unlock bootloader officially then there is twrp cofface. which automatically patches boot.img. So no need of lazy flasher too
Those are my experiences. may not be 100% correct.

but for miui flash modified cofface with lazy flasher (for unofficial unlock) and u can use twrp cofface for official unlock to flash miui
always take backup before doing anything

U can download from en.miui.com in download section
No it wont get relock
But u shall flash lazy flasher or use twrp cofface (for official)
I am saying these according to my experience
I unlocked unofficially 2 mnths ago
And flashed various custom as well as miui rom
And today i checked bootloader was still unlocked
But i guess there are some very few custom roms which relocks bootloader ( i forgot though)
But after you once flas twrp in ur phone though BL gets locked u still can flash miui zip custom rom, kernel anything via twrp so no issues
Based on my experience lol ????????????????
Official unlock is only successful for lucky ones
A lot of people have reported about the 50% error for which xiaomi's server are responsible
As far as unofficial unlock is concerned I don't know about which ones the safest and easiest method for 8.0.2.0
And is it possible to revert to miui if there is no earlier backup ?
From my experience.
When I got my hand on RN3, I update it to latest update, which is MIUI 8, stable version (Android 5).
Then try to unlock bootloader to flash custom rom. This is where my journey began.
Unlocking bootloader with Official method is not that hard.
- There is step by step guide from MIUI forum, although not everyone succeed with that method.
- My step:-
1. Apply permission from MIUI
2. Everyday login to MiUnlock Tool to see if I got permission already. (about two or three day of waiting)
3. Make sure Mi Account > Personal Info is same as MIUI Forum Account > Personal Info.
4. After that, I flash RN3 Fastboot Developer Rom (Android 6) with EDL, not with Fastboot using XiaomiFlashTool.
5. Once success flashing, setup phone like you going to use it, set MI Account and everything. Then reboot to fastboot.
6. Open MiUnlockTool and connect phone, and begin unlocking bootloader, and I got it success in no time.
My step to go back to MIUI (Stock Rom):-
1. Using RN3 Fastboot Developer Rom (Android 6), this one with bootloader locked.
2. Reboot phone to Fastboot mode, using XiaomiFlashTool to flash Stock Rom.
3. After that, setup as it is. Reboot again to Fastboot mode, and use MiUnlockTool to unlock again.
** Well that's for my experience. With such a hard and long journey.

Hi all. My RN3 is currently on global stable MIUI 8.0.6.0 which os LL based. I want to switch over to Global beta which is MM.
I dont want to use MiFlash as I bricked my device twice earlier flashing the MM file.
Can I flash the MM recovery zip through TWRP? Should I use Alka Twrp to flash and do I need to do anything else after that? Can anyone please help me with exact steps to get MM global beta through TWRP?
Go to xiaomi.eu and get a zip that Global MM modified (only remove bloatware I think) and flash it via TWRP.
MiFlash actually rescue me from a soft-brick one week ago. MiFlash shouldn't brick your device if you doing it right.
MiFlash works perfectly with Global Stable, I don't know about Global Dev, but I have a solution if you want a official way to go Global Dev.
I will assume you are not flash any custom recovery yet, and still at stock recovery. And no bootloader unlock needed.
Flash Global Stable via MiFlash and update Global Dev via stock recovery with recovery zip.
I do it once when I go from MIUI 7 Stable to MIUI 8 Beta few months ago, and it works very well.
dev roms should b flashed with custom recovery bro..
I have nothing against MiFlash but my PC USB ports seems to be having a problem when I flash using MiFlash and it stops midway with some read error..I had that problem twice..
So I am always using Alka TWRP for flashing CM 14.1 builds from LL directly. Wanted to check if I can do that with MIUI 8 Global Dev too using their recovery zip file. Heard it causes bootloops. Please detail the steps of flashing through TWRP. Thats the safest for me

When you go from miui lp to miui mm , your bootloader will be relocked and you have to unlock it again and flash twrp.
Actually, TWRP remains, you only need to unlock it with MiUnlock in fastboot mode. And then you can go to twrp or system. Because BL is locked it causes bootloop

I tried to unlock my bootloader via

After that I m trying to unlock my device, But it's stuck at 50% (Another

So if I unlocked my bootloader by fastboot miflash unofficially method,

What would be the cons if I unlocked unofficially..
You need to boot in EDL mode and then flash with MiFlash china/global dev fastboot ROM. For that you dont need to unlock BL. Then you will be able to unlock it on dev ROM.
I had exact same problem

No you cant upgrade OTA if you have official TWRP.
It only works with ZCX TWRP, I suggest flash zcx, backup all partitions to microSD and then happy flashing.

I have Redmi Note 3 SD. I applied for official unlock while phone was on MIUI stable 8.0.6.0 (Lollipop) , but I did not wait for permission and I unlocked unofficial and I upgraded to MIUI stable 8.1.1.0 (Marshmallow). Safe TWRP is installed and phone is rooted .
What to do now ? Should I continue with official unlock ? Could it be done if phone is already unlocked (unofficial) ?
Does it change anything significant ? I think I would prefer to be officially unlocked , so the bootloader doesn't ever lock again , but I am not sure if I can or if I should proceed from actual state .
Thanks
PS - Just checked Mi Unlock status in settings and it says - This device is locked !!! . But in Fastboot says bootloader unlock : true !!!
I'm in the same position, and I've sometimes considered unlocking officially. But, for the most part, I am happy with my unofficial unlock and worried that the official process will not work immediately, so I haven't bothered to officially unlock yet.
This would be the proper procedure for doing so, I believe.
1. Take a full backup in TWRP and be sure to copy it to a PC or somewhere separate from the phone. Also copy any important files from internal storage to a PC or some external storage.
2. Flash the latest China development rom using Miflash. (This would relock your phone).
3. Boot and log in with your Mi Account. Check in with "find my phone" to make sure Xiaomi knows you are logged in on your phone with your account.
4. Unlock via the official method using the Mi Unlock Tool... and pray that it doesn't get stuck at 50%. (If it does. Do "find my phone again" and try again later... and again later... etc. Sometimes it reportedly takes days. This is why I haven't bothered to do this yet.)
5. After officially unlocking, you could theoretically restore your TWRP backup (probably avoid restoring any weird partitions other than system and data in case it screws up your bootloader).

I followed this guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtoeZg6K-z4&feature=youtu.be
Update - I tried unlocking official without flashing dev rom and relocking the phone - of course it didn't work because MiFlash could see the bootloader already unlocked . I will not bother anymore to unlock official if actual state of phone is safe for further custom roms .
Just to make sure - can someone advise if I can flash xiaomi.eu roms from Safe TWRP without worries ? Do I need to flash Universal boot img patcher too after I flash rom ?

I went through same path. Now on LAOS 14.1 . You can flash .. but do take backup of all partitions. Also do try to find what your FP sensor is. You may end up in issue like this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3543397
Scroll though my other posts for more info.
The problem with Settings crashing , I solved by flashing Radon kernel - also FP is working with this kernel .
It looks like this Redmi Note 3 is much more prone to brick than Redmi 3 I used before. I went through quite a few bricks and failed flashes while unlocking and upgrading to Marshmallow .
With Redmi 3 , which I bought unlocked from Greece , I never had a single problem flashing custom roms - never used fastboot, edl , myflash , just TWRP .
So - no need to flash universal boot img patcher or anything else after flashing custom rom ?

Most guides say that you need the latest dev rom in order to unlock.
If you want to try with merely re-locked bootloader on your current rom, I believe maybe you can re-lock in fastboot?
"fastboot oem lock"
?

Now device is unlocked. [ Flash Dev Rom only ]
I would like to know which Twrp to use , now I need to get back to Miui official global stable with custom recovery [ need OTA , Incremental updates ] & also if I flash radon kernel will I receive Incremental updates?
ZCX Twrp is recommended?

First of all why would you flash any rom via fastboot/miflash? when you already unlocked the bootloader? because in doing so your bootloader will relock automatically (Mostly on Globle Stable roms because those come with locked bootloader).
My advice re-flash Globle Dev version and try.

If your phone is really 64GB version as you're saying then it could be internal partition problem which could be solved by various apps (root is req.) and within TWRP, please try otherwise flash Global Dev via TWRP (preferably redwolf recovery, because it contains lazy flasher and many things for MIUI).
