I am still posting here as, although the device i have is 4 androids ( EVO, EVO 3D, TRANSFORMER PRIME, ARCHOS A10|1T:8000), all with HDMI port (except the 3d, which has HDMI output through the USB port with a converter thingy), what I am posting about should, i would think, be an android-wide thing, not anything specific, especially for ICS and jellybean.
I know, and have read, all the specific device threads about HDMI input, but, as it would be near impossible to unit-specific code for HDMI communications, and as the HDMI standards state that they are functionally, and always have been, that HDMI is a 2-WAY communications protocol, then shouldn't an "HDMI input display" code be able to be written for Android as a whole, so there could be a stand-alone app for any android with an HDMI port to just 'sleep' android when an HDMI is connected with video-out signal being transmitted over it, and just default to a display?
Especially with ICS able to handle not only HDMI 2-way communication, but its' support for full HD displays (for example, TransformerPrime T701, and GoogleTVs), or even whatever the display is capable of?
So, shouldn't the app just be to read the port's input, if its HDMI signal, it can either 'suspend' or 'sleep' android and allow the device connected to simply pass display signal to the device?
If HDMI follows standards, which it must in order to even use the HDMI trademark, then any android which can dispay to HDMI out, by definition, MUST be able to receive HDMI communication from the other device. Anything over HDMIversion 1.5.
I have a working familiarity with HDMI output, but unfortunately, i've never had a chance to work with HDMI input coding, so I understand I could be way off.
so please, just tell me if I am mistaken, i can and will delete this thread or move it where you guys suggest, just please don't ban me for thinking this all the way through.
But my understanding of Android and HDMI is that anything that is capable of transmitting HDMI can be read by anything else that has HDMI (except china with its strick firewall) therefore, anything with an HDMI out and an HDMI to HDMI Mini or Micro cable should be able to connect to DVD players, computer graphic cards, XBOX. etc.
Why?
just to use as a display. I'm not sure about the archos, but i know the evo3D dual core and the ASUS ee transformer prime should have enough power to use as displays, probably with suspend, ANY HDMI signal and decode it and display it just as if were live. People would use to plug in dvd players, video game systems, etc while on the go.
So, with 2-way communication through HDMI, shouldn't we be able to make an app that would turn the android device into a small portable screen?
-----
Once again, i am thinking this is is an android-wide app or mod, which is why i am posting here. Please someone just tell me if it needs to be moved and not ban me for posting here, like the warning is saying.
I had snippets of various code pasted here that should be able to be pieced together into something working, but, as I don't really know what the lines mean or how to code it together, i'm gonna just end this here and see what everyone says.
--
Does GoogleTV handle the TV's various inputs through Android processing? could we just extract the control lines and turn it into an APP from that? or does GoogleTV only run when the TV is on a specific input channel, no android runs if switch input to Component or HDMI or others than the 'dedicated' android input selection?
No. There is not a way to use an output as an input. Period.

- i cannot test the samsung mhl, as i dont have any hdmi device.
did i made any wrong turn somewhere?
UPDATE :

This cable works only on Nokia 5800.
There are no Android phones that support TV-out via 3.5mm jack. Some phones have HDMI port for this, but most don't.
Now, microUSB-HDMI adapter is known to work on some Androids, but LWW has not been tested. So we also do not know, if there is any app for it or not.
2nd way would be DLNA, but that only supports media files.
Thanks man

i still confused how to use DLNA?
I already tried the Samsung "Micro USB <-> HDMI" cable and it dindt work. But that cable it's a bit weird, you have to connect the charger to the cable. Maybe a generic "Micro USB <-> HDMI" cable works

You don't connect the charger to the adapter.
I am not sure, if Xperia's support TV-out from microUSB. If not, then likely will not work.
For DLNA, you need the original file from stock ROM.
tv out

In Xperia Mini st15a, DLNA can be used through an app what initiate an server what give access for media content like videos and photos, and if you have an eletronic like a notebook or tv with dlna certified, then they have the client to connect to the server and execute these contents. Although, windows 7 comes with dlna client, windows media center, through wifi (dlna is a protocol what runs over wifi).
I asked in my country to Sony support about MHL, they say what the only device is the Xperia Arc S what have MHL ... but i can't confirm that, and the new Xperia U, P etc etc maybe have. However, for us owners of xperia 2011 devices, theres no mhl function, and i searched a lot... so i found xBounds, google it.
About cables through jack, the same, don't work... Sony have an oficial cable to x1 i guess, but not for live's or mini's.
Search also about mirrorOp app on Google Play Store.
PS3 have dlna also and Sony have an app on Play called VScreens.
ps: sry by the english.
OH Sorry guys.
I didn't see this thread. I make New thread look like this.
Any one test it?

"No problem" about threads, just be careful. One day I made this also . Post an answer on your thread with a link to this post.
And it we go again... all noob have hope about the HDMI in service menu...
Yes, in service menu there is a button for hdmi test. All Android with service menu have a button for hdmi test. All Android with this button kinda have hdmi software support. But, in order to use HDMI properly, the device need a hardware what support HDMI, for example, MHL need an USB socket and a circuit, HDMI need a HDMI socket and a circuit.
In this case, is all about hardware not only software. Although, there are some ways to do screen mirroring, some hardwares and softwares. I bet in xBounds.
No one tried to plug an MHL adapter in mini's or live's, because no one reported if work or not, all we have is a uncertainty. No one tried to plug another kind of cable and reported if work or not. *No one since the latest search I made.
I haven't tried to use an MHL adapter yet because I don't found it in my country so easily and don't found a MHL adapter "more appropriate".
I just need search for a friend or visit some seller what I can meet to test it. I don't found yet.
ps: here lives a bad english also

Doubt not. You're obviously too busy to look it up . Suffice to say that entering "android tv out 3.5mm" or "galaxy s tv" on a well known phone spec checker (sometimes known as 'giyf') gives prominent links to the correct accessory and video demos.

The Sidekick 4g does as well. 4pin 3.5mm TRRS (Left,Right,Ground,Video) cables work on it. So does the Galaxy S II (i9100), and according to Samsung's website, with "Samsung Exhibit™ 4G Android Smartphone Samsung Captivate™ Android Smartphone Samsung Vibrant™ Android Smartphone Galaxy S™ 4G Android Smartphone Samsung Omnia® II Touchscreen Smartphone"
Composite video on 3.5mm jack, and most of those phones have MHL over usb or hdmi as well. Suck on that non-believer.
Samsumg have nice phones.
Sadly theres no MHL, or jack, or HDMI, or magic for xperia mini/pro, et cetera.
Is really unpleasant what the demostration video for LiveDock cause the impression of is possible do tv out for any phone Xperia, but this was discussed before, the true is what the phone in demostration has your own HDMI out. Even the docks with HDMI out, is for phones that already have the HDMI out builded in.
We have just a long wait for xBounds becomes a true for us, because is the only resource what seems work as we need and want.
Of course there's another solutions, but the issue is the delay, but this is not problem, for example, if you want just show content in non-real time.
i have used the galaxy notes MHL in my xperia mini and it dosent work....!!!!1
