Do you guys think that will ever be possible to reprogram the only physical button available on the Z line to make it more useful?
Something like:
Tap = back
Long press = Home
Double tap = Multi-tasking
+1 on this. It would really be great to be able to interact more with it.
But it's not a button......

In that it is not a mechanical activation device, no - it's not a button. But it is a sensor that can detect the presence of a finger, which means we could perform different actions in response to such events... just like one would when "pressing" a button. Hell, assuming the APIs exist, we could even configure the sensor to execute different actions depending on the finger touching it. I'd love to have it do one thing when the thumb on my right hand touches it and another when the thumb on my left hand touches it - as different hands typically indicates different uses.
Those interested in giving the fingerprint sensor additional functionality should keep an eye on this project. It only has a few functions now but might evolve into something more useful.

Has two functions as I know.
1. Fingerprint scanner
2. Screen off button(any finger)

I'm not an expert, obviously, and this is why I opened this thread (thanks to the moderator that moved it in the right section) but I guess that a fingerprint reader can or could be used as a sort of button since it is definitely possible to do gestures on (many of) them.
I've found Gravitybox works well, with per finger actions and an automation app it can do quite a lot.

In the latest on Xposed 3.1, Gravitybox 6.2.1. Just set it up on my Moto Z, makes the normal navigation home button temperamental but besides that works well.
(Configuration for per finger actions was in the Fingerprint Launcher section, definitely a new feature)

The home soft button isn't temperamental it's activation area is smaller when activating fingerprint actions.
If you test it out it's reacting to your touch from the middle on up not from the lower end already.

Aye, I did notice that but that makes it temperamental in use since it's not normal to have to carefully touch the top of the button or swipe from the sides to raise the nav bar. Gestures and full screen works grand anyway.

I woud say yes, considering it's the same specs powering the Galaxy Note 10.1 (at least, i'm betting on this )
I'm actually sort of surprised someone hasn't tried flashing one of the Galaxy Note 10.1 roms on the Note 8 (I'm not recommending this, i'm not a developer. Just surprised no one (big kahuna's) tried this).
I can't wait until someone figures out how to make this a quick option on the drop down menu so we can toggle the keys on and off based on what we're doing

Just to be clear - this is only suppose to disable the capacitive function of the hardware buttons, not enable the virtual on-screen buttons or anything (the latter was what I was hoping for)? Don't mean to diminish the value of the first mod to appear on this forum - I just don't quite understand the use case for this. Thanks!

I hope it didn't sound like I was criticizing the patch. I was genuinely interested in how people were using this - we all have our own ways of doing things. For example, the hardware buttons have turned out to be more convenient than I expected for me because I use the tablet in bed a lot, and I find it's easier to touch the buttons if I hold the tablet upside down, so the buttons are at the top. With virtual buttons, they'd just move themselves back to the bottom!
Thanks, working good with LMT launcher.

Similar specs, but different. If you tried flashing a ROM you'd softbrick your device. There are a number of devs working on ports and I'm sure we will be seeing customs appearing soon in the future.

Hello all,
after disabling capacitive keys, install GMD gesture control to get the same through customized swipes.
Now SNote will work without being annoyed by keys at the end of the page
Hi all,
I kinda like the HW buttons and I wished they were real buttons rather than capacitive.
Is there a way to disable them ONLY in certain apps? I would like them to be disabled when I use S notes only.
Also,
the mod mentions "Your capacitive buttons will not respond to your fingers, but retain functionality with the s-pen."
So I can actually still use the buttons using the Spen?
Thanks!
For those who tried this, I wonder what app do you use to simulate the "back" and "menu" button WITHOUT using the Stylus?
I'd love to disable the capacitive keys, but there are times when I need to bring up the menu or go back WITHOUT taking out the Stylus and drawing the gesture.

Try in the Setting, where you can disable it.
I constantly open my phone to check the time, hit the home key one handed and look at time on lock screen. But now I'm holding my phone by the bottom right corner and have dropped the phone before while trying to reach up and press the side button to close... it's a pain.
Sure I can sit there and wait for timeout, or I can put it back in my pocket, in which case it might "swipe open" and be doing all kinds of things while in there.
Wouldn't it be cool to look at the time and just click something, like the home button again, or the 'back button' and have the phone close again??
Anyone know how?

Are you rooted? If so using the home or back button could be possible via smali edit. If your not rooted, I can write an app that will show a square (size determined by you) that will show on your lock screen. When you tap this square, it will shut off the screen, tapping and moving your finger on the square will move the square. Square is removed once unlocked.

You can reassign one of the capacitive keys (e.g. "back button") to turn the display off with an Xposed framework module. And there are legions of apps that do similar actions if you do a search.
Even better IMO is to use a lock screen app like Dynamic Notifications which can automatically show you the time when you pull it out of your pocket and automatically turn off the screen as you put it back in a pocket. Without pressing any keys at all. It does this by using the proximity sensor and it works very well indeed.

They may not be running xposed. Therefore an xposed module may not work. Secondly, all lock screen apps suck. Also, if it's using the proximity sensor to turn on the display from your pocket, it's draining additional battery.

All lock screens suck? Your objectivity is astounding. No subjective bias there whatever. The idea is to provide options to the OP, not cater to your idiosyncrasies.
The battery draw for the suggested app is tiny, much less than most apps that do not poll the proximity sensor and you have no idea if the OP may or may not wish to use an Xposed module.

No lockscreen app can provide the same amount of security as the default lockscreen. Therefore, it sucks. I can and have gotten around all popular lockscreen apps on the play store. Yes, the idea is to provide options to the OP, but make them good options and practical options.

This is a shame. I figured this would be one of the first mods due to the popularity and convenience of on-screen buttons. The bezel on the Note 4 is so small at the bottom that it wouldn't even look like a waste of space to have a navigation bar. The capacitive buttons are so easily pressed due to the small bezel. I don't mind this, but I wish the option for on-screen was included by samsung. I also hate the "back" button on the right side because I'm left-handed and can't reach it with my dominant hand. That should be reversible as well. Is that possible?
I also recommend lmt. The back button is instant.

Ah, thanks! What would I change to simply disable the Recent and Back keys completely? I have on screen keys now. I still want to keep the home button because I don't accidentally press it.
Actually, I just put a # in front of the line for app_switcher, which worked. What do I change or remove to disable the capacitive Back hardware key? Thanks!
EDIT: figured it out!
To disable the Recent and Back hardware keys (capacitive buttons), edit /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl and put a # in front of these 2 lines:
key 158 BACK
key 254 APP_SWITCH
Save and reboot!

The only thing about let and pie control in general is that it auto dissappear. When multiple back key is required, it is a pain.
Which is why I have resorted to using side key panel when I don't want to use capacitive. I edited settings database to add transparency to side panel menu as well as having a hint bar dissappear. I moved it to the comfortable zone for my thumb, and trigger it without fail. It says on till I press outside of the side menu.
It is working great for me. Although I would rather have standard nav bar for purely visual reasons as well as more modding options.

I too am a lover of a static nav bar on my Galaxy Devices.
I now have a SM-N910P now and am frustrated as heck at not being able to get it functional here, on a rooted stock NK2. I used to run SlimKat 4.4.2 on my SPH-L710 and loved the navbar that they baked into the ROM. SlimLoli is maturing for the Note 4, but it doesn't yet have any S-Pen support baked in. This fact, when coupled with how well Samsung and Sprint have done with TouchWiz on the Note 4 have caused me to hold off on putting a custom ROM on the device.
So, what to do.?. Editing buildprop does indeed cause the looping system UI FC. UDN is an excellent solution barring one issue, and that it is doesn't have a means to dedicate a portion of the display to the nav bar. It just overlays on top of the launcher's/app's UIs. I'd be willing to pay for a solution that fixes this.
Pie controls have never really clicked with me. Not yet being willing to move away from NK2, I find that I am wondering if there is a way to force a portion of the bottom of the screen to be entirely dedicated to a specific app, all of the time. As depicted in this screeny, UDN overlays and it is frustrating as hell.
Anyone have any ideas yet?

Hi, I really am disappointed that motorola didn't use all that space on the bottom of the phone as actual buttons. I know there is an app that turns the fingerprint scanner to be used as a home button, but is there one that will make double-tapping the sensor go into multi-task screen? That would be great because then I could disable the hideous soft keys and just use that! (I don't use the back key that often, it's a bit useless imo).
Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.
This was the first result when searching the Play Store for "fingerprint gestures". It has what you want. The taps have to be kind of long for it to work. And in order for it to work properly you need to disable "Fingerprint sensor can lock phone" located in Settings - Security - Settings cog.

I just tested that app today but it makes the regular "home" on-screen button useless. Most of the time that button isn't working, the other 2 on-screen buttons do work properly though.
On the Mate 10, when you have the on-screen navigation buttons, a double tap of the task button automatically switches to the last app and back and forth. I can't see how to replicate this with the single gesture key when hiding the on-screen navigation buttons.
I also wish you could customise the gestures:
Swipe to left, go back.
Press once, go to home.
Press and hold, tasks view.
I think this makes logical sense.
Btw, I love this phone.
I think its a copyright issue with regards to your second point.
Regarding your first point, switching apps with fp is not featured yet. But its a good idea and you should send it as feedback using the Hicare app. Either a double tap of fp to switch between last app, or configure the swipe left to do so (while the swipe right remains as "back") or maybe all together do a iphone x style swipe from bottom of screen to switch between apps.

Are you aware of other manufacturers havings similar switch to last app on their fp button ? Probably all eating donuts I guess. Or maybe figure out that moving software navigation to fp guestures will have gaps and compromises.
And fyi, the switch between last app was implemented on emui first before android officially implemented it.

Are you a software engineer? Anyways I am guilty I am a regular on Krispy Kreme, Anyways I know double clicking recent app does bring you to the last app, what I am saying is there should be more easy way to do it because on Mate 10 its a lot better not showing the soft key 3 buttons on the bottom, I am asking about that they should place a shortcut on the fingerprint gesture which they don't, you can't double swipe the F sensor to go to last app, or the floating white button because it requires you to press and hold it and swipe up or left to call a command. When you have the Mate 10 you will understand what I mean, and I am not talking about other phones, I just want to remind you may be you missed it, this is the Mate 10 forum or may be I am wrong.
