Questions about cm and note 3 in general. - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

I just got my note 3 pro and I really like the device and I have no problem with using MiUi, but I have considered to maybe put cm 13 or 14 on it. I have heard that the kernel that Xiaomi have released is old and outdated and never version of the note 3 might come into some problems. Is that true?
What about the camera on cm is it as good as on stock?

I've been using CM 13 from the moment I got this phone and it's the most stable rom for me. As for the camera, yes it is better than stock since it lets you record 720/1080p at @60 fps (even 4k at 20~fps), while the camera on MIUI is limited at 720/1080p, only at 30 fps. If you decide to flash official CM 13, you could try flashing Radon Kernel which probably has the most features so far ("double tap to wake" recently added!). Make sure you read the instructions first since this kernel is NOT compatible with every custom rom, but it will work for most of them.

What about flash. Is that working? In other phones when using cm the flash would come on to later or early making it impossible to use the camera in low light situations.

Works fine, but the camera on this phone is generally terrible in anything except direct sunlight anyway.

Flash works just fine, but as "banana_bender" mentioned, don't expect any decent results in low-light situations, especially for 60 fps recordings.

In terms of photo quality, I think MIUI camera performs better than CM and other custom rom camera's. It's the reason I'm still using MIUI.

I like the CM 13, but the sound quality. I too low.

[Q] Difference in Display sharpness [CM] vs [SAMMY]

I have been using L-droid for a month now. Its perfect in every way except the following two.
1 - Display crispness
2 - Camera
1 - Display Crispness
I feel the Stock Sammy ROMs have a much sharper and crisper image with better colors as compared to any CM based ROM I've used. I want to understand why is this difference ?
2 - Camera
Stock Sammy takes Photos way too quickly (from the time you press the button to the time it gets snapped and ready for another) compared to stock CM camera. Again I want to understand why is this difference ?

You are correct about 1, there's a sharpness fix implemented in some kernels.
No idea about the second one, are we talking AOSP vs samsung camera on AOSP and samsung roms respectively or both on a samsung rom?
If former, it's due to closed sources.

Sharpness fix in kernels : which kernels have it? Can you name them.
AOSP camera on AOSP ROM vs SAMMY CAM on STOCK SAMMY ROM.
If it's because of closed source then my question comes out to be : developers have figured out the camera driver what's the factor they haven't figured out yet?
My curiosity comes from me being a driver developer for nix for specialized systems . Haven't worked on any drivers for Android yet. But I am curious.

Boeffla has the sharpness fix, that's as much as I can tell you, you're better off doing a quick search yourself.
I don't dig deep into issues since I can't do anything about them, but as far as I know, they haven't found what exactly makes all the hardware camera tweaks work and how to implement them, maybe try searching for codeworkx posts or even justarchi. I believe it's the same with HWComposer.
The only reason I stuck with Sammy ROM, it's camera quality :/

Which custom ROM is the best?

Hello guys, i'm getting my OPX in about a week and i'm doing some research beforehand. My question is simple; Which custom ROM is the best one out there?
For now i have my eyes on cyanogenmod but i am wondering what your opinion is.
The only thing i need is for the ROM to be MM and it has to have support to use sdcard as main storage
Also i do have an additional question; Which camera app gives the best results?
Can you guys help me with this?
Thanks for the help
EDIT:
I have read some more around the site and i have found some tweaks that makes the camera better and stuff (http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...-custom-camera-hal-4k-uhd-dci-30-fps-t3315382) Is this any good?
Is there anything else i should know about?
There isn't a "best" ROM. Some are good in some aspects while others are better in other things. It all comes down to personal preference. Start by thinking of whether you are going for features, battery life or a bit of both and go from there. If you are a bit of a noob with ROMs leave you telegram, what's app, etc. and I'll be more than happy to help you

In that case, i think im going to be happy with cm13, atleast that is what ill try first. Im going to try the camera 4k fix and see if that makes the camera better. Thanks for the help, i guess im going with what i thought i would do xD
If I can help you, I'm on SultanXda CM13 rom (25/06 build). I'm really happy with it, more than with OOS. I'm not a ''power user'' (I didn't even rooted my onyx at the moment :s). Everything i need work perfectly (GPS, SMS/MMS, gapps, calls, camera, alarm clock, some social media apps) and battery life is pretty decent (i have ~4h-4h30 SWOT with all ''****ty'' apps like twitter, facebook &co).

So how is the rom you are using compared to the official CM13 rom?
And also, have you tested the 4k camera "patch" ?
i can recommend sultan's cm13 as well
If you are going for pure CMish, be sure to give Sultan's Unofficial CM a try. It's basically stock CM13 with a custom kernel which greatly improved battery life and performances plus a few tweaks to make things easier. I get 5:30h - 6h of screen on time with medium usage.
Try it, you won't regret it
Sultans ROM already has the camera HAL included. It is his after all and it does way more than just enable 4k

I didn't try official CM13, the sultan CM13 works well, i stay with it . I have installed it from one week now, have only one issue of heating but only once and for less than 5 min (maybe because of facebook app **** ...). If you want a stable rom give it a try

I will, does sdcard storage work correctly?
mic issues on sultan's?
AoSPa. Was previously using CM13 but the mic seems problematic, tried aospa last night so far everything is smooth.
Yes, Sultan has both mic and SD storage issues. But you can easily fix those: you fix the external SD with either an xposed module or a zip in this forum; the mic is fixed by editing the build.prop
All the Roms are top notch In there own sense. Best way is read forums and ask questions on what your looking for. I keep going back to Xosp. It works flawless and with sparky kernel gives decent battery life. If you dont want the Sony apps you can just choose your own file/music/gallery apps.

Imo Sultan CM13
I am using Purity ROM. I find it quite efficient both in terms of battery and stable wise. Its better to take a poll and ask the users which ROM are they using. In that way, we can get to know the ROM that is used by many.
So which one is good in terms of battery life?

AOSPA was really good, but the camera app ruined it for me. If you flash the OOS camera app it should be great. Not too sure about it's performance/battery life though, I didn't use it for too long

Try something CAF based like Citrus but that won't improve the camera much.
Unfortunately xiaomi.eu ROM and a custom launcher like Nova are the only way to go if you want a decent camera and good battery life.
And one last thing: Try LineageOS 13 based on Marshmallow by Gizmo. It is supposed to take better pictures than Nougat based ROMs

The camera in custom ROMs based on Nougat is worse than in stock ROM, yes.
In Marshmallow based ROMs, the camera isn't that much worse but the images are still different than with stock. Someone posted photos here on the forum comparing stock and LineageOS 13 camera
Try N os now the camera is some what optimized now 21 St build

There's no point in comparing camera quality between different ROMs.
Historically the area where custom ROMs suffer the most in comparison to stock ROMs is image quality.
More or less the quality will be the same as the software remains the same, Snap camera, and all the ROMs use mostly the same sources for the same hardware.
The difference will be made by software image processing, which only MIUI can provide.
So if you want the best possible image quality from your sub 200$ phone, you have to use MIUI or be satisfied with the camera on your custom ROM.

Redmi note 4 with custom roms or Mi A1?

I am buying a new phone and I am not sure whether to get the note 4 with its bigger battery and install a custom rom on it (I can never use miui) or just get the A1 shipped with the vanilla android, are rn4's custom roms stable and smooth or the builds are not that good? Will the A1 be faster than rn4 with lineage or rrn for example? I like RN4 more because of the bigger battery, I don't mind the camera at all.
I also knew there are some rn4s that have mic issues as well as dead pixels, is that true?
if for custom roms for mido then most of them are stable and can be used as daily driver. And about the dead pixels i think it is true as my phone too some. I think it is the problem with mido bought from flipkart. So you can buy from mi.com.

What about the in call mic in custom roms? I know they did fix the issue with latest versions of miui, by tweaking the noise cancelation algorithm, is that present on custom roms?

i didnt experience any problem with call mic in custom roms. It works fine.
and what about a signal drop when phone is charging and being heated up in custom roms?
If you like the looks of a1 go with that, else RN4 checks every box with a custom ROM. Even camera is far better with the Google camera.
Also performance is silky smooth , I am using Paranoid Android 7.3 currently, everything works fine and battery life is also good.

I like the RN4 more because of the bigger battery but what frightens me most actually is the in call mic problems, I saw thousands of people complaining about it on forums, if my unit happens to be affected, do custom roms solve it or I will have to stick on miui newest version because it has the noise cancellation disabled?
Go with A1. A1 battery is good. You won't regret
Look, am not sure about mi a1 when it comes to development due to its A/B partition and etc stuffs. You won't see much development I guess.
If you look properly there has been a port of mi a1 stock Rom for redmi note 4 snapdragon variant just posted. It's been confirmed by Xiaomi on its Mi a1 launch event that mi a1 will get official oOreo by end of this year. So, choice is yours. If you want stock with latest otas everytime then mi a1, if youre a custom Roms lover then mido.

Most stable Oreo rom?

I want to give my Oneplus X to my mother, so i need a stable oreo ROM with good battery life to flash, what do you guys recommend?
The only things my mother will do with the phone are: making phone calls, whatsapp, viber
so camera etc don't matter

Mainly only 3 ROMs have active development (Omni, lineage and AOKP) AOKP has bug related to live display. So haven't used it since long time. I have used omni which is pretty good in terms of performance except its camera bug(green color photo when taken with HQ mode on) so I switched to lineages which is good too. For me lineage, compared to omni gives less battery performance. But overall haven't seen any major bug in it. So you can use lineage by yumi. :good:
Edit : RR is also there ,but I haven't tried it.
Install stock ROM , however your mom's gonna use it for basic things. And there are no bugs.
Install the OMNI rom. I am using it as my daily driver and it has been consistent. Although, do remember that it misbehaves with headphones attached via the 3.5mm jack and the camera sounds cannot be turned off. That said, everything else is amazingly smooth.
