Overheating & Battery Issues - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got this phone last night. I'm not sure but the battery drains quite fast (4hours screen time). Heats up insanely fast, like I'm just downloading something or browsing a bit then it goes 50 degrees celsius (cpu z). I'm not rooted yet so everything's in stock. I'm haven't tried stamina mode yet as I'm still testing it with regular use. But seriously, I'm really concern about the battery and heat issues. Any help would be really really appreciated. ??
Baseband version 32.2.A.0.253
Marshmallow 6.0.1

Try updating to the newest software version, 32.2.A.0.305 . It helps with both battery life and heating, or at least it did for me.

Hi, thanks for finding time to reply here. I checked my phone for updates but it seems to be updated. Is there some specific link to get this update?

My best advice to you would be to "Get used to it" :|

If your phone hasn't received the latest update, you might want to use FlashTool to flash the firmware. If you're nor familiar with Flashtool, do a little searching in the Z5 Compact forums, and you will find plenty of info on how to do it. It's not very difficult.
I'd point you to a couple threads about it, but I'm at work and don't really have the time to find them at the moment.

You could use flashtool to flash the latest firmware + install adb and fastboot (if you unlock your bootloader). Installing a modified kernel will seriously reduce heat issues and reduce battery drain.
Stamina mode is fine, but of course it only works by certain features of your phone when your battery level is getting low.

Thanks for the advices! By using this flashtool, I do not need to be rooted yet, correct? I'll do some searching about this method. Thanks! ????

This. With every update some people claim to have magically have fixed battery and heat issues but reality is the phone has had these problems since launch and they aren't going anywhere.

[Q] Excessive battery drain on 2.3.4

Hey everyone,
After flashing via flashtool the global 2.3.4 i noticed that the battery was draining way faster than normal. I should mention that i didn't wipe user data before the flash.
From what it seemed, "Android System" took up around 65% of the battery overnight without letting the phone go to sleep mode, losing 90% percent of battery in 8 hours.
My original setup was the stock rom and the doomlord v9. kernel. While trying to fix the issue n make the phone be able to go back to sleep i wiped user data n flashed the stock rom n kernel again with/without root, the SE tweaked v.5 rom, etc n the issue didn't seem to get fixed.
If anyone has any ideas on fixing that, or if it's safe to downgrade to 2.3.3 please share.
~The only thing running was a messenger app which usually uses 2-4% n my battery drain was around 3-5% overall with no use on 2.3.3 with the same setup.
(I'd post screenshots but the forum isn't letting me post outside links yet)

yeah, i noticed the same thing last night too. wifi causes a wakelock for some reason which didn't ever happen on 2.3.3.
I even relocked the bootloader n upgraded to 2.3.4 via PCCompanion just to be sure i'm not doing anything wrong with the flashing and roms but doesn't seem to be fixed in any way..
Thanks for the info!

I just checked on pc companion and it's not available for me yet in the UK with 2.3.4 global.
It's not available for me here in Greece either.
I've done some reading around at forums n see what other people have been experiencing, n i somewhere read that in one case the issue was the SD Card (which is weird) and in another it was the automatic time setting via internet. I'm doing some tests right now trying different combinations, but from what i see the phone did go to sleep with Wifi on after i turned off the auto time setting.. Nothing's for sure yet though.
Interesting. I've make ftf file with LT15 loader and uploading now.
Tonight I'll try and share it.
Well, i'm confused. My phone seems to be back to normal for now. I put the SD back and enabled internet time, restored most of my apps to see if the wakelock would happen again but it's still working properly. Which means i don't have a conclusion of some sort.
~Update: Sim Card doesn't seem to be recognized now for some weird reason..
~Update 2: Backup & Restore was the issue here, after i deleted it n rebooted the phone SIM is working fine.

the only think i found is that it doesn't stay awake with all routers, it only happends if the router is WPA2 locked and it is "n" standard, the phone will do no problem if it is connected to a open b&g network.

You can either flash the doomkernel v9 that roots the phone by itself, or boot your phone into recovery mode and install the RootXperia if you prefer stock settings
Use Juice defender, you can allways gain some battery time.

[Q] Help, new to this

Hi, I downloaded and installed XWLPY NeatRom Lite v3.5 (18th October 2012)a couple of days ago and now my battery is draining extremely fast. I tried a couple of battery managers and nothing seems to work.
Anyone with any ideas on what I can do to remedy this? Plus I can't see the update section in my settings, is it removed with this software?

The ROM doesnt have an update because the devs have removed it because you just flash an update. As for the battery drain give it a few more days if the problem persists try another ROM. If it still persists after that try recalibrating the battery or resetting the fuel gauge chip.
Hope this helps

Hi,
NeatROM 3.5 is one of the best ROMs from battery backup perspective. And I can say that because I am using it since 3.5 came out and have never had any issues.
For a better battery life, follow the steps from the link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33045733&postcount=8776
Please note that the instructions are prepared to get the most out of your battery. Even if you follow the few ones that you are comfortable with, you will surely see some improvement.
Please press Thanks if this has helped you.

Its simple mate. Just download an app and hit a button.
Usually battery drain is due to one of two things.
-Phone not going into deep sleep
-Wakelocks.
Download an app like CPU spy. you can use it to see whether or not your phone is going into deep sleep like it should. Also, use better battery stats to look for wakelocks. Download the app from HERE , let it run for one battery cycle and then check for wakelocks. If you dont know what those are, spend some time reading that thread.
But if you want to hold off for a couple of days, you can do that. It does take some time for a phone battery to settle when a new rom/kernel has been installed, after which battery life tends to improve.

Thank you very much for your help mate. I've tried a couple of battery managers off play (juice defender and another one). Right now kind of regretting this download, everything seems to be going wrong;
1. battery is draining @ 15% in 20 mins ( I only bought the battery last week after having the phone unlocked).
2. there's a lot of lag
3. screens keep freezing and
4. keep losing reception and constantly having to restart phone.
I only downloaded this cause after unlocking my phone it failed to update. Is there any other that I can download that works well with SGS2?
There's no dearth of ROMs for the i9100 dude. Try a couple out and see if those help. If its stability you're after, maybe use an ICS Rom rather than JB.
15% in 20 mins isn't normal even for a first day..you sure it isn't a faulty battery right? Was it giving decent life before you switched to this ROM?
Try downloading a calibration app and see what the voltage is when it says its charged 100%. Should be around 4100-4200 mAh.
As for the lags and freezes, did you wipe data, cache etc before you installed this Rom?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I had cleared the cache in settings before installing. Like I said, my first time doing this. Seemed straight forward at the time.
Since my phone is unlocked, will it return to ics4.0.3 which is what I had before?
Battery calibration app is showing 4161mv.
Will a factory reset help?
Thanks for all the help, site can be a bit confusing sometimes lol.

Cache from settings? No. I meant clearing cache from the CWM recovery menu. If you installed the ROM via CWM, that is.
If you did, I'd suggest reinstalling it again via cwm this time clearing data, cache and dalvik cache.
Ok..I just realised I totally assumed you'd installed it using CWM. Not sure if you did.
You can return to 4.0.3 if you want. Download stock firmware from sammobile.com and install it via Odin. I'm sure there's a guide on how to do that somewhere on this site.
Just noticed someone posted instructions on maximising battery. Did you use those? It could explain the freezes if they started after that. Some phones just can't handle undervolting etc.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Morning, I downloaded some battery managers and seems to be working better and faster. Battery discharged 27% in 5 hours.
Will see how it goes over the next couple of days.
Teaches me a lesson to do my research first lol.
Below is a screen shot of the apps I installed.
Thanks and gave a great day!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Haha that's a lotta apps just to save battery. As long as it helps eh? 27% in 5 hours is pretty acceptable for moderately heavy use. Depends on your signal strength and whether you're using data or on WiFi etc.

Anyone know what this is?
Been ignoring the latest .305 update notification, but now this shows up, only 1.3MB - does anyone know what it is / does?
Iv just had this update, installed it and can't see any obvious changes like the security patch update for august or October.

Excuse me, how do you state this?
Because of this
not sure its related or if i had it before
but i see in xperia care that i use more than 75% of my storage space
I have the same notification, both actually: the first one 23.5.A.1.291 and the second one 1.1.A.0.1 with my Xperia Z2
I updated it with the 1.1.A.0.1, it's OK, the phone don't reboot. But I don't update with the 23.5.A.1.291. I don't want to lose the root, xposed, and root apps (it was hard for me to have them on my phone (and I don't know why I can't access anymore to recovery, with locked bootloader)).
Anyone notice any additional battery drain? Might be just imaging it but it does seem like battery not as good.

Apparently some Z3C report the same problem (like here) , not sure if it can be related. In either case I prefer wait and see if there is an evolution about this update.

Battery drain and firmware relation?

Hi there!
I love fresh stuff so updates of ROM, kernel and firmware are must have for me. For the better and for the worse. It happened for the worse. I've been waiting a year for stable pie roms to appear that have zero screen wake delay and Syberia was the only room with EAS support. I thought why not. So flashed Syberia Latest in may of 2019 and latest stable, global firmware from xiaomifirmwareupdater. I was very satisfied with Syberia's experience and even more it's kernel performance that I didn't have to flash a custom kernel. I've been using the rom till yesterday for about 3 months and always flashed newer updates of Syberia and opengapps pico. My mido device started to drain battery much faster. Even that much that for example when I wake up at 6:30 am and arrive at work for 8:00 10-20% battery juice is already drained even though all I did was read comics in a simple reader. Tried to solve the issue but after all my mido device is 3 years old. got the conclusion that my battery sadly went broke. Still it was extremely annoying for me that I can't read comics for more than 7 hours during my shift (I'm a seasonal pool warden so I do nothing from 8:00 to 20:00) because my phone's battery dies no matter how I try no to let it. I've had enough so I changed rom and even firmware. Flashed latest China stable firmware which arrived in july and latest Pixel Experience. See wonder now my battery drains way slower and the phone shows me that it can run for 1 day and a bit more from 100% to 0%. I'm so happy and relieved that there isn't anything wrong with my battery.
I want to find out what caused the extreme drain. I really do. Could you guys please help me find the cause? Was it the previous firmware? Syberia updates? The stock kernel? The opengapps packages?
I have a few clues but I hope there are others with more knowledge on battery factors. Thanks a lot in advance.
Maybe kernel and apps usage. You should check the in battery statistics it may mobile network standby.

I used better battery stats all the time and it showed nothing unusual. Not on Syberia, not on PE. Furthermore I used Migrate app so I have every single app on PE that I had on Syberia with exact same settings. Perhaps the high battery drain was caused by one of Syberia's system app? If yes shouldn't I've been able to see it in BBS? If it was caused by an user installed app shouldn't the problem migrate to PE as well with the apps? I still think firmware caused the battery drain but I can't belive something certainly based on my gut.

Perhaps yes. Perhaps no. I use BBS all the time and it never showed me unusual activity on Syberia. I still think it could have been a firmware issue.

Did you ever try to use a bugreport + Battery Historian (Google's own tool) to check what is using your battery? I put together a small article about it on Telegra.ph the other day. Which MIUI ROM's firmware are you using actually at the moment? Some ppl. says that in less LTE covered areas the firmware derived from global stable ROM V9.6.3.0 does a really good job. Did you try to up- or downgrade the firmware? Did you ever try to disable LTE and use 2G/3G preferred or 2G/3G auto mode?

No. I never hear about those tools. All I saw over the web was better battery stats and it was widely recommended. So I used that. I was using 2019/05/16 china firmware while the battery drain was noticeable. Now I'm on 2019/07/19 china firmware and the battery drain is gone. I dunno. Since I didn't find anything about cellular network signals causing the battery drain I didn't experiment with it at all. It's constantly turned on. Like for a year now. I'll try 9.6.3.0 stable firmware and report back how battery drain is.

I would never use the chinese firmwares on a global phone, especially when your are not in China.. I had issues in the past with some chinese firmware versions but never had any with the global ones (here in Hungary we use different carrier technologies than companies in PRC and as far as I know global is optimised differently for a different market, not for China).

I just got my s23 ultra on Monday. Turn on phone and updated. I must say battery life isn't that great either. Once I start using my phone it goes down quickly
I haven't notice any lags after the update. Battery life seems the same as before. I just installed the update today so will see if there is any significant change. But so far seems that it's just working as intended. Still hitting 5+ hours of SOT after last a full day of use and 30% battery left no optimizations.
Seems fine here. Am on light battery profile
No difference here on VZW.
No problems on the U1 model.
No issues for me. If you have a few hiccups wait a day or 2. Apps do re-optimize after an update so let everything adjust.

Have had this after “analyzing battery pattern” phase. It was probably the play store update but as soon battery finished analysis p, it got worse
I don't get why some of you are only getting half the battery life that I am. I am Deaf so I don't do any voice calling. Don't have any games installed yet. And only Social Media I have is Facebook and Messenger. Other than that it's all Stock without any modifications and using Adaptive Refresh, Adaptive Battery and WQHD resolution.
The first screenshot was with Standard Performance Profile and Second was Light Performance Profile.

Look at the reports online. This Feb update has some s23 owners noticing battery degradation. Mostly previous gen phones updated to 5.1 though it seems, like s22 s21 owners
Use good gardians app booster after an update and you'll be fine

I use. I see no difference in what that thing does. I like the idea of it though lol
Hi, lot's of problems here
apps force closing
system notifications saying apps have issues
system restarting and going on a loop (not getting to the pin screen)
Had to go back to my prevoius phone until I figure it out
Chatted with Samsung, no straight answers.
Factory resetted it, still same issues, even on the instalation screen to pick language.
Anyone know how to rollback in a clean way to avoid warranty issues?

Regarding batery, wasn t able to check, but I assume it will have issues too.
Thx

Why do you update your phone if you get bugs afterwards?

Because I don't have a time machine to know what would happen. I assumed this didn't happen, but I was wrong, now is time to fix it..
Downloading update via Frija and will update on Odin.
The thing is I can't rollback, as I couldn't get the old firmware, only the new one.
I'll update here when is done.

Remember it for the rest of your life!!! All updates bring only bugs! No need to update Windows and Android! If you do, you will have problems. You won't get anything good.
