Hi, my friend gave me a Moto E on Tracfone and i would like to know has anyone found a way to unlock the boot loader on this phone? i have many other android devices and they all have root. root would be a god send on the phone as i can use an app to completely move some of the most storage eating apps to my micro sd card and have the internal storage clean for other apps and things. i have read that it can not be unlock or rooted which really sucks as i can't live without root. has anyone found a way to unlock the bootloader for rooting? i do not plan to put a custom rom or recovery on it just root it for more ability.
Sorry, i replied to the wrong thread

Hey guys, I have just one quick question.
I can manage unlocking the bootloader and rooting my device but I'm afraid that by doing so, everything on my phone will go back to stock, kinda like doing a factory reset. I have spent literally a week setting up my homescreens and downloading all the apps that I needed so having my phone go back to stock would be highly inconvenient.
Can anyone who has rooted their amaze confirm this? Did unlocking and rooting your device made it go back to stock and you had to set up everything again?
Once you unlock your bootloader your device doe's a factory reset , after that you won't need to factory reset unless u flash a ROM & there are 4 ROMS to choose from now .
Thank you for your answer.
Greatly appreciate it.
No problem , if you need anymore help just hit me up .

Great reply Rev.
For the OP, use MyBackup Free to backup your apps and settings.
The settings is easy to restore but until you have root... the apps is kind of a pain. But it's easier than going through Market.
I do not have a micro sd card, do i need one when rooting or unlocking my droid?

You do because the current recovery does not mount allow flashing from the internal sdcard.
I have an AT&T Motorola MB860, or by its regular name Motorola Atrix 4g running gingerbread 2.3.6, and i have tried rooting this thing so many times its making my head spin. The device just wont root no matter what i try. It is in USB Debugging mode and i unmount the SD card every time i attempt a root. I have tried super one click, Z4 Root, Rescue Root, ICS Root, and unlock root. In super one click it has an OS version check failure asking if my os is 2.0 or higher, and fails from there, and in ICS root the device shuts down completely once the process has started preventing it from rooting. I have updated all my motorola usb drivers as well and im still getting nowhere. In Z4 root which im using 1.3, i installed off of a website supplying the .apk file, it gets to shell rooting and the program fails completely. I have to reboot to retry and every time it fails. I put the phone in windows media sync to attempt the root each time and its just not working. The devices Boot loader is also still locked if that makes a difference in the devices rooting ability, but its infuriating me and I just cant get this to work! My plan is to root the device to make a full image file so that i can install full ubuntu dual installation alongside android. If the device soft bricks then i have the image file to recover android. please help if you can. I also have trend micro internet security installed on the phone if that makes a difference which i believe it shouldn't.
I think you need to unlock the bootloader to root and you'll want a custom recovery on there also. Maybe try a more manual rooting method, these all in one tools are great but you don't really learn anything or fully understand what you're doing to your phone.
My advice to you would be spend time reading up on the very useful threads and guides here at xda and then find a method for your phone and current software / firmware and then go from there.

I heard that unlocking the bootloader will cause a 100% user data wipe through the ubuntu wiki page on installing ubuntu. In a way if thats true its backwards because i need to root the phone to make an image file but unlocking the bootloader will wipe the personal data and then im stuck with losing all my apps progress and data. Do you know any active threads explaining how to do a manual root of the MB860?
only rooting your phone can be done with super one click root (google it), make sure you have the proper usb drivers for the atrix
I did it before unlocking bootloader and it worked just fine
When i unlocked the bootloader there was no user data wipe.
To root try googling the preinstall method.

Super One Click also did it for me
2 things I found that was required before it worked...
1 - turn on USB debugging (as frequently noted)
2 - when connected to PC via USB - use Motorola Phone Connect option
Also - re unlocking
google "atrix 4g unlock_v4.2.zip" and follow instructions using the said zip file
use IHOP_Bell when it comes to RSDLite part (for Telstra MB860)
(connect via Motorola Phone prior to beginning)
use all precautions with RomRecovery noted in forums
watch plenty of videos first
Just got the s4 i9505 from verizon
I was wondering what I can do to it.
I am on 4.3 android
1: Is it possible to root without unlock
2: Is there a fail safe in case of bricking?
3: If I do root or unlock, is there a way to undo all of it and gain my warranty back
4: Is is worth rooting and unlocking or just wait 2 years until I am available for an upgrade at the very least.
5: I have literally like 9gb out of 16gb of space, is there anyway to fix that without rooting/unlocking
I've had an android device rooted and unlocked before and I bricked it some messed up way... un-repairable. I don't wish to have this happen to my phone.

I'm not familiar with the i9505 version but I assume I545 is similar that I have
not sure what you mean with #1
when you say "unlock" do you mean having an unlocked bootloader? If so, you can root and not have an unlocked bootloader becasue unless you have an mdk base firmware, there is no unlocking of the bootloader possible
2. there is always a failsafe to get back to stock by using ODIN
3. I believe unrooting is always possible and you do have #2 available
4. the question is mute, based on what do you intend to achieve with rooting.
5. memory available not an issue if you have an ext-sd card and redirect all your data like music, phots, videos, to it. I am running safestrap and have had 3 ROMS loaded on my 16gb phone with no issue with internal memory as I have all my data to extsd card. I dont run games, as to me thats a waste of technology on a phone...so I dont have memory issues

So I cannot flash roms onto my device?
Can you provide a link to ODIN or explain how to use this?.

I suggest you do your research before you decide to do anything to your phone. EVERY question you have has been answered multiple times. Search and read. Then read some more. You won't be sorry.

You can install safestrap and ROMs compatible with safestrap, as for ODIN. Search functions works in XDA
My wife just got a Republic Wireless Moto E, and I'm thinking of doing the same. The RW model seems to be mostly identical to the other variants, but has a locked bootloader, so standard root methods are impossible. Are the any leads on a way of rooting the Moto E without unlocking the bootloader? I tried TowelRoot with several modstring combinations, and Pie Root, but they unsurprisingly did not succeed. I know (I think?) that the /system partition of the Moto E is not writable, so at best I ask for a temp root.
I should point out that I mainly want root for Xposed and Titanium Backup. Not super interested in tethering, and I understand RW's prohibition of it.
Also, the Android version is 4.4.4 (in case that wasn't obvious) and the model is XT1019.

I expected as much. So now I wonder: certain phones like the Galaxy S III can emergency boot from the SD card when bricked. Does anyone know if the Moto E can? That might open up a root possibility.

Samsung phones have unlocked bootloader by default hence they can boot from sd card.
So I guess the only hope is for someone to find a temp root exploit (or a bootloader exploit, but talk about impossible)... Which is unlikely since there is easy root for most Moto E users.

Wait, would the bootloader being locked or unlocked even matter in a hard brick? That's the state the S3 could recover from with SD booting.

I do not have a moto E actually but I do have a moto g and they are pretty much the same. Download it and try it, as it will do numerous compatibility tests to make sure it will work.

I tried Sunshine already, but it couldn't do the temp root.
So has there been any movement towards root on moto e RW?
I am also interested in this.
In my case, I want a large amount of app data to be on the SD card. I understand that I need to root to do this, but I can't figure out how to root my Republic Wireless Moto E with 4.4.4.
same results with sunshine as OP
Can someone please list the variants that cannot get the bootloader unlocked? I am having a problem deciding whether to buy US Cellular Variant or not. I wanna make sure I can unlock its bootloader first.
OK so we all know the moto g XT1028 is unlockable and unrootable without the help of a third party but that's another days talk. Lol Anyways is there a way to partition the internal memory of this device and somehow install a mobile friendly Linux or other OS without unlock/root? I'm about to get rid of this phone for as little the customization fits my wants and needs. I've unlocked and rooted a few phone but never put thought into partitioning but I'm starting to get into Linux and I'm just curious. thank you for the answers in advance!
