I'm posting this here because the Note II is a prime example, but we could also look to the Galaxy Nexus, which is two software versions behind and can't really even be called a Nexus at this point.
I helped my boss set up a Note II and was showing him some features I thought he would like. The first one was the "blocking mode" (do not disturb), which my AT&T model has, as does the International model. It was absent. It first, I thought I just wasn't seeing it or it was moved, but a google search confirmed my fears. I learned later that Verizon removed this because they have a competing service.
Then, I was looking for the S Planner widget (the full screen calendar version) because, as an executive, it was a good fit for him. It was also missing. I'm still baffled by that one.
There is also the branding, including the home button. Verizon seems to treat their phones like Stock Cars these days. The bloat, the missing features (HTC Hub on HTC devices), the numerous modifications, etc.
AT&T is far from perfect. They put a lot of bloat on their phones. But out of all of the Android phones I have bought in the last few years (since they restored "unknown Sources"), I have not noticed them actually removing a lot of features. They did remove screen modes from their version of the GSIII, which was confusing, but otherwise they have just been content with adding bloat that you can disable.
I know Verizon has great coverage, but does it ever really bother you that they remove/modify so much functionality on the phone? Sound off in my poll. I'm curious if I'm the only one who hates Verizon for this. To me, it wouldn't even feel like my phone. It would feel like Verizon's.

Use to bother me until I learned to unlock and root. Had the gnex prior to the GN II and actually forgot what stock was like until I had to re lock and unroot to sell it. Forgot how limited the phone was.

Doesn't it say something when the first thing you have to do with your new phone is root it and install your own software, though?
I just bought an Optimus G from AT&T. It had a lot of bloat, but I disabled it all and I'm happy with it otherwise. At least all of the intended features are there.

Going off of your list, because yeah it was tl;dr:
Splanner widget might just be broken (its in the rom). Blocking mode doesn't work on Verizon (afaik).
Logos do suck. Samsung is slow on updates already.
Also, I compiled 4.2.1 for my Gnex. I still call it a Nexus.
You know what, I use to be a strong and proud supporter of VZW. I've been with this company for over 10 years now and over the last 5 years i have progressively become more and more displeased with my service. Yes there coverage is the best in the nation. However, in my case i live in NJ, all 4 major cell phone providers cover the entire state of NJ. I hardly ever leave this state unless its going to one of the surrounding cities (NYC PHL DC) and those places are all covered by all major cellphone providers.
With all the limitations VZW puts on the phones, I do believe I will be changing carriers in 2 years (as i just upgraded both my lines tot he note 2). As of now, i want to kick my own butt for upgrading/extending my contract i should of switched when i had the chance.
I get what your saying and it pissed me off on those same exact points. I decided to live with it because I would have rooted for other mods anyway eventually, but probably not as fast. I couldn't wait to get the note 2 and decided to upgrade instead of waiting a few months and going to another carrier. Since this phone is worldwide I'm not worried about updates. I just won't be waiting for Verizon. I think I'll be content for longer with this phone and when I want the next big thing I'll wait till my contract is completely up and switch carriers. Sprint just got lte here so maybe it will be mature in a couple years.

Do you hate what AT&T does to your phones? My phone came with multi-window and didn't need to wait for an update to enable it. Maybe you should go complain to AT&T for not giving you multi-window at launch.
S-Planner, as mentioned is in the ROM, but not functional, and blocking mode, even when enabled, doesn't work. It's entirely possible that with an OTA, S-Planner will be fixed. Blocking mode may be network related. You know, since AT&T is GSM and Verizon is CDMA, but I doubt you've given that any thought.
Also, delayed updates? Yes, the Nexus has delayed updates, but it is still ahead of most other devices. Also, how long does AT&T take to update phones? You don't have a lot of room to talk there because they aren't so great in that department themselves. How long did the Infuse 4G take to get Gingerbread?

Okay, you need to chill out. This isn't a "Verizon vs AT&T" thread. I acknowledged that AT&T was far from perfect. It is my opinion, however, that Verizon has been much worse in this area lately. My experience being based on several years of service with both providers.
My role in my company puts me in a unique position to use phones from all of the carriers, so yes, I do have room to talk. I also have years of experience in mobility. I'm not "whining". I was asking for feedback from the community.
I suggest you check your attitude. This thread wasn't a personal attack against you or any other Verizon customer.

At least Verizon has never disabled sideloading. Carriers suck. All of them.
My post wasn't a personal attack, and really has the same basic tone as your OP. Your OP is essentially "VZW sux, let's all go to AT&T", I'm pointing out that AT&T isn't really all that much better, but you don't see people coming into AT&T forums and saying "AT&T sux, lets go to VZW". You pointed out a bunch of faults with Verizon, but seem to forget issues with AT&T. Their track record for OTA updates isn't that much better than VZW, significantly worse in some instances. How about network coverage? They do a good job of screwing their users on plans and plan features too. Your phone supports video chat over cellular, but your data plan doesn't. How is that different from removing/limiting software? Maybe I'll go create a thread in the AT&T Note 2 forum to voice all my complaints with AT&T service then...

No, YOU INTERPRETED my thread as "VZW sux, let's all go to AT&T". You should probably take a moment to recognize that.
I'm not advocating for any carrier. I would prefer unlocked devices, if not for the lack of LTE. When AT&T had side-loading blocked, I hated them for it and yes, the Facetime over Cellular was a dik move, too.
But I also love Smartphones and these days, AT&T does much less damage to the device than Verizon (T-Mobile and Sprint treat them the best) and it's something I'm hoping that AT&T doesn't suddenly decide is okay (again).
Getting my hands on the Verizon Note II really drove it all home for me, thus my post here in the Verizon Note forums asking how other users felt about it.

AOSP roms are better than stock anyway.
Coverage and reliability of the network far outweigh the downside of an annoying logo. I wanted to switch to Tmobile cause of their pricing but tried a month and coverage was simply not good enough. Friends in my area that have ATT and Sprint complain about coverage all the time. In the end I agree with Adryn. All the carriers blow donkey. For me the least of the evils is VZW.

I interpreted your post to be the same as Imnuts mentioned.
So either your worded it poorly, or there is something in the water.
Clearly you are angry at Verizon and felt the need to vent. Yeah, I am not too pleased with them as well, but so be it. You make it sound like everything is a constant measured response to screw people. Blocking Mode wasn't blocked because of a competing service. It just doesn't work. Do you ask Samsung to recode it to be removed, or just hide it? I doubt they cared. They just told Samsung to deal with it. You can bring it back. It doesn't work on Verizon though. Splanner widget is probably an oversight, and time will tell.

Otherwise, who knows, maybe it would be there on future devices. That service too didn't entirely work right on Verizon and was very limited to the devices it supported everywhere else.

I think his post did seem necessary since you don't seem to get it. You point out good things about Att and trashed VZW. So others did the opposite. Everyone seems to have read your post that way. Perhaps you need to learn how to articulate your thoughts better.

Yeah, because the way everyone READ my post (I'm pretty sure you mean "interpreted") is my fault. I can't control when Verizon fanboys decide to be defensive. My neighbor told me he saw this on the news. I checked on Taptu and sure enough there is an article on CNet saying that this Saturday it will become illegal to unlock any device without the carriers approval. I cant post the link cause i have fewer than 10 posts. Bummer.
Does anyone know anything more about this? How can they make an open source project like Android illegal. I understand the "Buy an unlocked device." idea, but but where I live there's simply no carrier that supports the use of an "unlocked" device.
I was just wondering what u devs thought about this. Will this effect any pure Google devices such as my GNex? What about my HTC phone which HTC provides the means of unlocking? Is that having the carrier's approval?

If the device is a Google branded device - coming straight from Google, not from any carriers like att or Verizon, then it shouldn't affect the device. So if you have a Verizon Gnex, yes. UNLESS Verizon decides to support it. This is why I always get my phone from Google itself as a device with no limitations except the hardware inside.

So will there be a "grandfather" clause that will allow me to keep my GNex unlocked or will they be able to somehow re-lock my LTE GNex?
As i stated, the only svc available where I live, aka. the sticks, is LTE. I am not aware of any unlocked device worth owning that uses the lte network. Suggestions??
And what about my HTC Rezound with unlocked bootloader? I mean, verizon had to allow HTC to sell its phone with the unlockable bootloader?? I would think that they allowed the GNex as well? I mean its only a select few devices that have this built in.

Is illegal in Bulgaria ago. And refuse warranty service if are changed ROM or device is ROOTed.
The only reason I like my android is because I can change the roms and root the phone. Allows so much customization and additional support when the manufacturer rather you go buy another phone every year.

Not sure what you are saying. Are you saying rooting will not be illegal but that loading a new ROM on a phone that makes the phone no longer carrier locked will be?
Most of these forums revolve around putting new, improved, unlocked ROMs on our phones. If that's going to be illegal on the 26th, then we've got problems because all these forums will be about illegal activities!

There are many petitions floating around, yet, I don't believe this will be around for very long. If you PURCHASE your phone it's fine. The problem lies in people upgrading, unlocking, then selling their phones. So second party (the people that buy the unlocked phones) may be held liable as the IMEI might not be registered at 'sale' or 'upgrade' even though those numbers are plainly posted on the sales package. It still pisses me off though. I upgrade and don't really use the phones I get directly, (I don't sell the phone until my service agreement eligible for another upgrade) and to think someone I sell a phone to may be held criminally liable pisses me off. Even the same when I buy a phone considering ignorance is not an excuse. How many noobs are here begging for information? Say some kid buys an unlocked ICrap to use on T-Mobile? Pops in the SIM Card and gets reported. Who wins?

Speeding in a school zone is illegal too but we all catch ourselves doing.
I suggest if you unlock your at&t phone you don't go calling them saying your going to T-Mobile. You wouldn't speed in front of that cop.
BTW this doesn't seem like a big deal. Hopefully it ends subsidized phones with two year plans so people can not have to wait 2 years to switch. If you paid 800 for it then you can unlock it, or what some people said where you make a backup of your stock and then do whatever.

I don't understand what is the problem of lawmakers, but one of them are simply f**ed up.
1. If i bought a phone from a carrier and i'm still paying the monthly fee, until my contract ends, what is the problem of the carrier if i unlock the device?!
2. If i unlock the device, root it or change the rom, i must be aware i will void my warranty.
I believe this has been posted before, but I wanted to bring it back to life.
I received a new phone from Asurion (I'm on Verizon.) today. It came prepacked with MK2.
You can imagine the frustration with this that I had after having AOSP KitKat on my previous GS4, and I'm willing to do just about anything to bring the new one to a firmware in which I can unlock the bootloader.

Well I signed it what the hell. I just don't think they care though.
They're too much into the big picture to care about us folks who want to flash ROMs . they made the dev s4 to address this, I think that's where they will stay. They'll just end up losing people like us as customers as we move to the other carriers that don't lock them down.

To be entirely honest, I'm not sure. Although you do sound correct.
However, I'm sure if this petition make 1000 signatures, Change.org would get it sent to the leads of the departments in both companies. It's called CHANGE.org for a reason, and if they weren't to do that, I would be genuinely surprised. I guess we'll just have to get it signed and see what happens! :fingers-crossed:

Also, Knox was created by Samsung either way. Meaning that they technically could come out with a BL unlock, if they really wanted to for Verizon customers. (unless legal issues?)
I'm not sure, but I suspect Samsung is looking to expand into a corporate environment where security is king. I can see the possibility of selling unlocked bootloaders to those customers who know the risks involved, but their challenge is to protect the security of their products. I don't know where Blackberry is with the ability to "root" their phones, but when I was on the Storm, all kinds of people were looking to unlock their devices and were stymied by the security measures in place.
enterprise clients who represents the single largest bulk of cell phone sales vs those who mod their phones are driving the security for good reason...modders can purchase the dev edition with an unlocked BL if they want to...
safestrap is our option currently and gives us of plenty of choices.

Well of course they could, Samsung does the actual "locking" of course. But it's the carrier that makes them do it.
To be honest 1,000 signatures is a joke compared to millions of enterprise customers.

I'm not signing that. It doesn't even make sense. ITYM "respectfully." And, they're not going to retire a phone because people are not fully satisfied, they retire phones when they don't sell or a newer model comes out.
And why not call it what Verizon calls it - the Samsung Galaxy S4? Do you think some VP keeps track of the phones by model number?

Such writing. Much horrible. Wow. If you want to make a petition you may want to proofread and/or learn the English language first. However, even if the petition was properly worded it would not help to unlock the bootloader any more than me praying for it to be unlocked. Nice try though.

Not to mention that from a hardware standpoint, this phone is still pretty good a year after its release.
Funny fact is the verizon rep spoke yesterday to us saying "all of our phones are unlocked and are free to do what you want with them"

That's true from a carrier perspective. He was referring to "SIM locks," which prevent a phone from being used on a different carrier. People who've dealt with GSM phones are more familiar with the concept - other than some pre-pay phones, I'm not aware of any US CDMA ones which were ever locked (and they didn't have SIMs, so it's not a true SIM lock, they did it in a different way).

they are unlocked from carrier veiwpoint
again, its enterprise customers which number in the millions vs modders who number in the thousands who drive this.......
if you want to mod a phone, a developer edition is available
I'm sorry but I'm completely confused by your attitude toward this. Here you are on the largest modding website known to man and by your post count you've been here for quite a while. Yet you solution is "buy a dev phone".
I guess that might make sense for the devs who are creating roms for the community, but what about there userbase? Are you saying every single person on these boards (with a locked bootloader) should purchase a dev phone? I mean you might as well just close the site at that point because the userbase is going to dwindle, and then you've just got dev's making roms for devs.
I bought this phone, it is now my property and i should have the option to do with it what i please.
I guess I'll have to start buying dev car's and dev computers when i want to make mods to them too with that kind of attitude.

It's not about the attitude, it's about not much could be done to get Verizon to side with us in giving us unlocked bootloaders. Up to this day there has not being an unlock for the S4, Note 3, or newly updated S3. With it being so tight the only way to go is to buy a developer edition. User base or not, the answer for a bootloader unlock isn't going to just fall out of the sky the chances only get slimmer by the holes that get patched up from each loophole. Of course I see your side of your case but I also see why he'd say buy have a dev phone or simply jump carriers or a different phone that can be unlocked.

While there is no specific mention of the G3 (only G2), this is an intriguing bit of news. Dan Rosenberg has pulled some outlandishly amazing stuff in the past, so if he says this a vulnerability that affects all Snapdragon processors, I believe him. The S5 and M8 may have been patched already, but I have a feeling that if we keep our devices from updating, this could be something that works for us.

Ah. That is certainly a shame. Well, here's to hoping that the other methods in the works come to fruition.
I'm in the same boat as you though. Eventually I plan on getting into the development side of things. But Security+ and CCNA certifications are my current focus.

Yeah, I have experience in custom kernels and roms, also other minor projects unrelated to phones
It seems like almost everyday theres new information on the progress of the bootloaders for the g3 but not all of it seems to be pointed out on xda
If you want really good news, read the last few pages of the bootloader unlock thread for the AT&T G3. Should also work for Verizon.

I don't think the official unlock will be done anytime soon. I just like that those guys are working hard at it and seem pretty confident that they will be able to get all variants unlocked with their method they are developing. It will be a while, but I'm thinking it's very possible still have it before the new year.
I believe the "official" unlock may happen in time. It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if LG adopted the same practices as HTC in that regard. With that said, it's not something Verizon will ever allow on their devices. In the past, we may have gotten lucky. Now, we only have that option if Verizon and the manufacturers offer us a "Developer" or Google Experience edition. Personal advice would be to lock down your phone via Titanium Backup concerning OTAs, regardless of how enticing they may be, and wait for the Dev community to release their method.

*shakes head* Did HTC actually release the S-Off method for Verizon devices? Thought it got unlocked by devs via firewater because when S-Off was first released by HTC for the M8 the Verizon version was not included.

Verizon was not included. You either must use the exploit of find someone with a USB S-Off service card.
Verizon probably won't even let the official unlock work as it'll "mess up the network". Oh FFS.
Verizon just plain sucks as far as these things go...they lock everything down, then also they don't even want us having any Nexus devices. But it's OK you can pay around $650 with tax for a Dev S5 or something that you have to get from Samsung lol

Agreed. If I was in a part of the country with better coverage from the other providers, I would have sold my unlimited line and jumped ship a long time ago. But alas, only AT&T has decent coverage outside of cities in SC besides Verizon, and their coverage drops significantly if you veer off an interstate onto a back highway surrounded by countryside around here. So Verizon it is.

Could not possibly agree any more...I wished VZW weren't so locked down on everything. I'm in the exact same situation here in NE. AT&T's the only one who's even close coverage-wise, and really they aren't. So yep, our choices out here include Verizon, Verizon, ooorrrrrr...Verizon! :silly:
Emailed LG about a bootloader unlock since there rumors floating. LG's response was that I'd have to get it from Big Red. Fat chance of that happening.

The one that I returned ended up being affected.
All that where sold before they announced the recall will show up affected, it doesn't mean the phone will have a problem. Of course everyone should change it regardless....

It says in the article that this IMEI tool is for future purposes. An example would be buying a used Note7 off of Ebay or something. You won't know for certain if you are buying a "first gen" Note7 or a "2nd gen" one unless you use this tool.
So as of this very post, every single one of us who use this check tool will have affected phones. The tool is currently useless until the fixed phones come out and the population begins to mix with a few stragglers of the old version.
Edit: Only phones currently not affected are the Chinese phones btw.

I called my local Sprint store today, and they had them in stock. Yes, wrong forum, I know, but I've been closely following all the carriers. I'm just glad to have this thing over with. I'd call your local stores tomorrow to see if they got them, though. Doesn't seem like Sprint would be alone in receiving them.
