Hey guys,
A few days ago, I visited some site on chrome (on my RN3) and it opened a popup. I must've accidentally clicked on it or something and now there is a persistent automatic download of an apk file. It always gets stuck at 100% but the download never finishes. Maybe Chrome or MIUI8 is not allowing it to finish the download.
Since it's always stuck at 100% download, there is a PERSISTENT Chrome notification, which is VERY VERY ANNOYING!
Here's how it looks...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
That notification NEVER goes away. It's clearly malware as I can't stop the download and no matter how many times I clear history (delete everything) in chrome, it always shows back up. I have also installed ESET antivirus and started a free trail, but even after a full system scan, it doesn't find anything. I am currently on Global Stable MIUI 8.0.6.0.
Please help me in getting rid of this completely. Any help in this regards would be highly appreciated.
Thanx a lot in advance. Desperately waiting for a reply
Sorry for your problem, as you've tried everything I would recommend to do, I think, maybe you've an app installed which is causing it.
BTW, which theme you're using? It's great.

I don't think I've installed any app. I went through all of the ones I've got installed, and they were there before this started happening.
By the way, here's the theme that am using

I know it's a temporary fix but still that annoying notification is gone Thanx a lot man
Now to figure out what is triggering the download.

Actually it's not being "triggered" by something. It happens when you don't choose the "save" or "cancel" option while downloading from Chrome. Nothing to worry about. Just be cautious while browsing.

It is being triggered bro. I clear my history in Chrome, use the Security App to clear trash, restart phone, and the download starts automatically as soon as the phone boots up, even without me going into chrome.
Edit: Alright, I got the issue solved. One of the members on the official MIUI forums suggested this...
Settings > Installed apps > long press on Chrome > clear data > reboot
This somehow removed the "trigger" and now after rebooting the phone, the apk stopped downloading automatically.
Now, I have another query. I want to install AdAway and that needs root access. I already have my bootloader unlocked officially.
The reason I am not rooting my phone is because I do not want to lose out on OTA updates. Is there a way to retain OTA updates and still have root access?

Install zcx recovery. You'll have to re-flash full recovery ROM for once to be able to flash OTA updates. This recovery automatically creates a backup of unmodified system and boot images and applies OTA updates normally.
@Kazekage Gaara
Check out [ZCX TWRP] thread!
Don't use it myself because on Xiaomi.eu rom.

Guys, my Redmi Note 3 (Snapdragon) is on Android 5.1.1 (MIUI Global Stable 8.0.6.0). So, ZCX TWRP process will work on it, right?
Just confirming coz one of the moderators on MIUI forums told me to confirm before proceeding.

Okay, I just rooted my phone. Literally took five mins. I got SuperSU installed and the first thing I installed was AdAway.
As of right now, there are no OTAs available. And to enable OTAs, I need to download the full stock rom (Global Stable MIUI 8.0.6.0.) and flash it???
I have to do that once and after that OTAs will install as usual?
Guys, is it mandatory to flash full stock rom (Global Stable MIUI 8.0.6.0.)?
Edit: Done and Done. Followed the guide to the T and everything worked out PERFECTLY! Now waiting for OTAs
Thanx a lot for all the help guys. Really appreciate the effort

My sincere apologies. *I did not want to garner any undue hostility to jcase or viperboy as the Root process was not at fault in any way.
It was only what we all happened to do once we had it. (deleting bloatware)

3 attempts so far and each time after the firmware downloads and the prime reboots, right after the Android with the gears shows up he turns into an android with an exclamation mark.
Then after a 5 minute boot I get a system message that says:
Post here if you failed too, and solutions you have.
Attempts:
first - Device was nachorooted, root backed up via OTA rootkeeper. FAILED
second - with root disabled via OTA rootkeeper FAILED
third - removed root via viperboy's tool FAILED
fourth - factory reset then update FAILED
fifth - just going to repeat the stock attempts until something looks different
No idea if this would work but maybe use that tool viperboy made to unroot yours and then try (pretty sure it has an unroot option)? Not sure why that would help since rooted users have successfully updated but may be worth a shot.
sorry forgot to mention that was my 3rd attempt

How are ya'll able to try the update more than once? Are you just talking about reboot or are you actually downloading the update again? the reason I ask is that I am unable to click the check update button.

when I click system firmware update the "check update button is grayed out but it just starts downloading in my tray automagically.
Rest all data, unrooted, still no luck. 4 failed attempts, not sure what would be any different from the rooted users that are able to update.
This is why you guys shouldnt have rooted knowing ICS was around the corner.
I too am getting failed. I used VipreMod to root and I've tried unrooting using said tool and also using the OTA root backup tool.

Thank you, oh wise one, for this great tid-bit of knowledge
Ok guys, first of all I have to say that you cannot access recovery without something like quickboot -or- rom manager so please get your preferred app for this.
I AM NOT LIABLE IF YOU SOMEHOW MANAGE TO **** UP A ONE CLICK APP! Do not ask me for support. Learn something and fix it yourselves.
Next, I will say that AlbertWertz will be making a video, but this is -really- simple.
All you do is click the button corresponding with what you want to flash.
I will work on aesthetics later but for now, it works, checks md5's, and flashes the images.
Problems:
None with my app, however there are sure to be a few bugs on the recovery. Also: this flashes to internal, that's why I included a reset to stock button!
How to fix a borked install: CLICK ME CLICK ME FOR THE FIX!
(Note, you need superuser otherwise not a damn thing will happen!)
Download link:
here
Instructions:
Just click the button that has the recovery you want to flash. It's really simple. Screenshots, credit, and changelog will be posted in the next post.
Wait 10 seconds for the flash to finish then you can reboot if you want.
Please don't mirror
Changelog:
Code:
2.1: Updated with 1.4.3 stock image and the 6.x CWM image.
2.0: Cleaned up the code, added better md5 checking now it won't flash without a good md5.
1.5.5: Fixed md5 hash checking
1.5: Added Reboot Recovery button
1.1: Fixed filename issue for stock recovery
1.0: Initial release.

It was still uploading. It's done now.
Also no, you shouldn't have to uninstall his CWM. It's the same image, just simply flashes over the old one. It just helps to be able to flash whatever whenever you need it.
dumb question
which one is better to flash, or can you do both
and then switch between on boot
cuz on my xperia x10, i can switch between, both on boot...
Stock recovery is what you need if you plan to use the unroot method, etc. CWM is used for custom software / firmware flashing...No, you can't switch between. You flash CWM if you want to flash zips and if you want to have stock recovery again which doesnt give you a menu, you flash stock.
I'll probably end up packaging my root mods into the flashable zip. I'll see if cfoesh or whatever wants to package up snowball mod.

Hey, wanted to say thanks and wanted to say this: flashed CWM and at first I couldn't access recovey with n+Power, but now I can. Tried shutting down and then n+Power, nothing. Then used ROM Manager's "reboot into recovery" and it booted like normal instead of going to recovery.. then ROM Toolbox and used and "shutdown"... Started back up with n+Power and it worked. Tried again a few times with normal boots and shutdowns, then n+Power and it goes to recovery.. Hoping I remembered exactly what I did but hey, it works like it should on any device now
EDIT-Oh, apparently if I let go of the power button too quick then it doesn't go into recovery... just tried again with quick letoff and booted normal even though I had the 'n' button firmly pressed the whole time.. Gave it a 2 second count next time before letting go and went into recovery

Yes I have that on my Asus transformer, like you say it has all the different options in one popup menu. Much more straight forward
Thing is, if it's a sizeable thing to code, is it going to be worthwhile considering cm7/9 is hopefully not far away ?
I know CM9 development seems to have halted (nothing updated on OP in a decent while) but it could still be a lot of work for something that will only be used for a very short period of time.
technically, i should be able to use this to flash back to "complete stock" (including removing cwm)?
It's used to either flash over stock recovery, or over CWM. Depending on which option you choose. It's the same process, just different files. That's it.
Fantastic work. You've made it easy to do and I thank you!

Working with a net--restore is working!
Many thanks to bauwks, nemith, goncezilla, and indirect for bringing clockwork mod to the NT. I'm a thorough-going noob and always will be, so I've been waiting for a custom recovery so I could have a nandroid backup to save my hide (and my ui) when I go a-themin'.
For example, I just hacked up my framework-res to try to get rid of some horrible list separators, which of course completely broke the tablet. Power-N, restore from internal sd card, and I'm ready to break things again.
Thanks!
So, last night I decided to update to one of the CM 10.1 nightlies. I haven't updated in a while and thought why the heck not? So I used the option built in the Settings app to update. I pressed download and waited for it to finish, then hit install and went to sleep while it installed. When I woke up I had no signal. Not even 2g. No calls, texts, data, you name it. Gone.
So I have spent at least 6 hours re installing old versions and scouring the internet and no one has an issue exactly like mine.
Here's a screenshot of what the settings look like:

Just flash in recovery. Probably best to use the newer which is the VRALL4. If this doesn't fix it you may want to try a clean flash with a full wipe.

Very odd. What recovery were you using? I'm not on cm 10.1 so I'm not familiar with the updater but did it give you options to wipe any data or caches? And did you reflash gapps after updating?
If you can get a wifi connection you could always try and flash TWRP through the goo manager app. Just a thought.

You should be able to install recovery from the goo app. Open the all, then hit menu, then install openrecoveryscript. Confirm and see if will flash it.
Had this problem many of times on a gs3.
Calm down, I may be able to help you.
In the settings picture you posted. The my phone number was out of sight.
If the spot said Unknown.
You may be in luck.
But anyways do this either way.
Make sure you back up any thing you don't want to lose.
Boot into download mode.
Flash a stock unrooted official version. I believe this will also flash the modems and radio as well.
Check your signal and phone settings now.
I would expect nothing has changed signal wise.
But if you still have problems you open up dialer and call this phone number
*2767*3855#
Now your phone will cook up some magic and everything will be like the day you opened the box
However if this does not work, I would consider a new sim card (free at Verizon), try and do some more research
Or accept the fact you may have a hardware problem.
Feel free to pm me to let me know how it goes.
God bless the American people.

I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it but, yeah, same problem here. I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.. For now you can uninstall the updates to the app and it will work.
**EDIT: It looks like a lot of people have been having this problem on lots of devices so I'm not sure what the deal is. I did find that if you keep tapping the video that it will eventually play...seems like if you play with it you can find a pattern that works relatively consistently. It's still annoying though.
Just quickly pinging this thread so I can find it later, since XDA refuses to consider a section for Fuhu's Android tablets.

Hmm, did it give any info about the error? Which version of TWRP do you have? Did you have the 2.4 nabi software or something else?

I tried doing a restore to a stock rom, that didn't work.
I also tried just doing a install and that didn't work either.
Maybe I'm not putting the stock rom on the correct folder for restore?

2.2.2.1 is way too old. Will boot but won't work at all if the tablet was on Jellybean or higher.

I wish I knew what Nabi build you were on to begin with.
I would try this in order. Flash this in TWRP(Install tab)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50431160&postcount=97
This has a more detailed log. If you see stuff in the log about not mounting, etc then it's not going to work. (Actually this is a good thing which means your bootloader is Jellybean)
If that doesn't work try this next. Install this in TWRP. This is what you are going to need to be on eventually anyway if you are trying to run a Jellybean port.
http://nabtabhacks.com/downloads/twrp-recovery-JBNV7AUS-271.zip (There are more recent versions as well I just gave you this one because I know for sure it works for Nabixus)

So either the update-binary in those zips are too new for 2.2.2.1 or you have the jellybean bootloader. How did you get 2.2.2.1 on there to begin with? What did you use?

I didn't use anything, it was there already.
There is some talk in the P6 race to brick Telegram group, it seems that the december update is causing root to fail.
So until this is fixed/solved, DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU WANT TO RETAIN ROOT.

He is working for the enemy now, was only a matter of time for problems to arise since he already stopped supporting MagiskHide at the behest of Google^^
Maybe Magisk just needs an update, maybe we have a bigger problem, we'll see
Nah, he'll find root or another Magisk developer will.
Cant we flash a patched stock boot image after the problem is solved?
As OP stated, do not update to December if you want to keep root. I did before I checked forums and lost root. Rolling back to November to hopefully regain access to root.

Please report back if its possible to roll back
I don't see any update when I check for update on my Pixel 6.
Do I need to something to get the update? I ma not rooted and hence do not worry about rooting.

Tread carefully, someone tried dirty flashing which then required a clean flash.

Yup, dirty flashed failed and requiring a clean flash. Good learning experience and lesson for me, don't jump the gun with the newest updates.
Assumptions made when I flashed December update on 4A 5G without any problems... c'est la vie.

You'll likely have to use the Google reset to factory process to ever use the phone again. I haven't rooted my Pixel 6 yet, though, so I can't confirm. But that's how I fixed a bad Pixel 5 update.

Google Pixel - Update and Software Repair
Need a USB cable and Chrome (I think, never used a different browser for it).
Again, I can't confirm this works but it's just an educated guess

just try it, only work up to google 5
Okay, so for anyone else here who tries to root using the December patch and gets stuck on the Google logo screen, here are the steps I took to fix it:
1. Hold down the power button until the phone turns off
2. Enter fastboot via holding down the power button and volume down
3. Attach a usb cable to a computer, download the factory image zip, then extract it
4. Once extracted, double click on "flash-all.bat," this will reflash every single component of the image to your phone and once it's done, will reboot and should boot as if nothing ever happened.
