Hi there,
I've recently got a new phone - Xperia Active.
It's locked to a Skinny Mobile Network as the packaging says "This phone will only work with Skinny Sim!". - I bought this from site similar to ebay. The phone is brand new - won in a competition.
http://skinny.co.nz/
I spoke to customer service who told me that it would cost $30 to unlock it but if i am with them for 9 months, it's free.
The questions I had in mind are:
1) Is it safe to flash a custom firmware on a 'locked sim network' phone?
2) What is the steps I have to take to flash a custom firmware i.e. expeacer's muiu or Real ICS ??
3) After 9 months i decide to unlock my phone (sim lock), would anything stuff up i.e if i stick another sim card in, the menu doesn't show up for entering the network unlock code.
Update:
checked my bootloader settings. It says: Unlock bootloader allowed: No

Custom firmware means a combination of custom Rom and custom kernel
1. You can only flash custom Rom's which have support for locked bootloader and I don't think you will get any problem with it (I'll better leave it for someone else to answer because I've never used a network locked phone)
2. As said above you can only flash custom Roms with locked bootloader and you can NEVER FLASH A CUSTOM KERNEL. You cannot use Roms which require their own custom kernel.
3. NO. you can stick up any sim after unlocking your phone with the unlock code your network provider (skinny) gives you . As your network provider said you can purchase the unlock code by paying 30 bucks or wait for nine months and get it from them for free. Either way you need a unlock code to use other sim cards.
and I'm sorry you can never use Roms which require custom kernels even if you have unlocked your network locked phone because your phone says "bootloader unlock allowed:NO" it means you can never use custom Roms like Cyanogenmod or other custom Roms which requires their own kernel to be flashed prior flashing the Rom .
To flash a custom kernel you need a unlocked bootloader and to unlock your bootloader your phone has to say "bootloader unlock allowed:yes" unfortunately yours says NO
EDIT: I learned that you could ask the network provider to change the bootloader status to yes after getting through the prescribed period of 9 months or after paying 30 bucks. After getting it to show 'yes' you can unlock the bootloader and flash custom kernels.
HIT THANKS IF I HAVE HELPED YOU!

Hey guys, I have a xiaomi redmi note 3 pro kate running global developer version of miui 8.
I applied for permission of bootloader unlocking on the 30th of December. Ive been waiting for over 12 days and I'm still getting the notorious "couldnt verify device" . I have tried every single tips, tricks, methods thats available on numerous forum threads. None of them work. Don't bother suggesting me a "way" to unlock my bl thats "100% guranteed" cuz honestly i've given up hope. I dont want to unlock in the unofficial way either.
I read a thread here that says it's possible to flash twrp, root and flash all kinds of roms without unlocking the bl.
Could you guys maybe guide me through what i need to do to flash twrp and root? what do i need to do?And again, I have a kate.
yeah i want too flash root and stuff's without unlock bootloader, i have SD version of RN3, btw!
Hi
I unlock my note 3 bootloader by officially few days back and flashed twrp to install custom rom. Today I try to install miui 9 in same method I used to install custom rom but my phone is dead now and the bootloader is unlocked again. So i went to unlock tool and try to unlock it again but it shows I can't unlock it before 30 days. Now what should I do how will I fix this. This is my only phone ? please help me
Flash a fastboot rom in EDL mode to restore it to working order.
Once the rom is installed properly and you have the same account details as before on the device, you should be able to unlock the same device without waiting 30 days.
The update to MIUI 9 probably locked the bootloader again.
ok, let me make 1 person very happy before new years. this dude looks like he needs a quick fix before new years. here it is.
[this will temporarly unlocked your bootloader, everything you need is in this file]

happy new year!
That's why i never unlocked my bootloader. I am a noob too
I cannot unlock my bootloader for some reason now. I had applied for permission around a year and a half back, I got the permissions, unlocked the bootloader and flashed a lot of ROMS. When I flashed MIUI through fastboot, the bootloader got locked again. Now I want to try some ROMS, but I cannot unlock the bootloader. It goes all the way till 99 percentage and it then gives the message 'Current Account cannot unlock this device'. I have permissions and everything because when I go to the mi unlock site I'm directed to the download page, not to the application page. Also, when I try to bind the account to my phone in Mi Unlock status in developer options, it keeps saying 'Couldnt Verify, wait a minute or two and try again'. I've waited for a day and it still doesn't work. I only have one sim card in my phone(the one which I used to get permission) but still it keeps saying the same message again and again.
Please help!
Regards.
Hello. Though I never had the problem (was on NOS rom before I messed something and had to flash miui rom via fastboot and relocked bl, I easily reunlock again using official method like the first time).
Before unlocking, make sure your phone are locked by using cmd "fastboot oem device info" or something like that I forgot. And your phone developer option have allow oem unlocking ticked on. Make sure your phone mi account logged in and of course matched with the one on your pc/laptop. Have good usb cable, drivers, and stable internet. Also you can try unlocking using another version of miui rom (the one you used for the first unlocking).
Don't know if those helps though.
I had the same problem for almost 2 months, asked on the miui forum and nobody helped so i just unlocked it unofficially, works great! On RR N now!
Same
I have the same problem, and also I know a lot of people with it. It seems that xiaomi has banned the unlock tool I don't know why...

Yeah its not an issue with all devices, I do have colleagues who have managed to unlock it officially, but still its a problem for a lot of people.
I have the exact same problem. Stuck at 99 when trying to re unlock, on both miui 8 and 9. I didnt bother trying to unlock with developer roms, just used the method to flash twrp without bl unlock. All good now on nos 8.
I'm happy with flash twrp only without unlocking bootloader since I got root access anyway
Why are you people trying to unlock bootloader when it's not even necessary on our phone? Just look on the forums a little bit more and you won't struggle anymore trying to unlock.

Hi , just manage to add account and device without errors on mi note 3 by using SoloVpn app from playstore set to China .
Now i am waiting 72 hour's to proceed unlocking.
Apparently the error on add account and device starting with 80xxx and some Chinese text it's blocking the unlocking tool.

Hello,
About a few days ago I just upgraded from Nexus 5x to xiaomi redmi 5 plus
and I missed the google camera with portrait mode.
if I unlock the bootloader and instal twrp to just to add this line"persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1"
and flash stock recovery and lock it again so I can get updates I am gonna lose my warranty?
sorry for this silly question but India chat support says that unlocking bootloader will not void warannty but if you install custom rom then it will void the warranty ...and some other people (and sites says unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty)
sorry for my bad English
When you open the MiUnlock app (the Windows executable that unlocks the phone after the 15 days wait after binding the MI Account to your device and after receiving the confirmation SMS for your MI account), a Disclaimer appears where it says among other stuff, that you'll have a less secure device and that some MIUI freatures like Find my device or OTAs won't work anymore. But at any moment anything is said about voiding warranty. Some carriers in my country (Mexico) sell the phone with the bootloader already unlocked (because they disable the SIM2 slot) but they still provide warranty service (crappy, but it's there).
Unfortunately, some other sellers won't provide any kind of warranty if the bootloader is unlocked, because they don't know anymore if you ran a custom ROM with faulty drivers that caused a hardware failure. So at the end the warranty service depends on where you bought the phone.
as a sidenote, be VERY careful when re-locking the bootloader. If you lock the bootloader and it has TWRP or a custom rom installed, you'll have a cute softbrick.
what about gearbest?
and is there any way to unlock it and to edit the build prop still receive updates?
sorry for those question its the verst time I own xiaomi ( i was using Motorola and Samsung devices only)

If you bought it from gearbest you don't have warranty at all. Just unlock the bootloader and keep it unlocked, there's no point in re-locking it.
You still get updates and everything else after unlocking the bootloader, but you must un-root and install the stock recovery before installing the update, otherwise MIUI will say that the install failed.
After the update, you can re-root and reinstall TWRP.
thank you very much
you solve all my questions!
