Which recovery are you all using? I am using Alka version since I can safely flash any ROM.
Is there any updated recovery that is better than Alka?

1. Cofface.
2. ZCX (it works for N ROMs also and has more options than Alka/cofface for backup/restore and other stuff). IMO use this.

Is going to ZCX from Alka as simple as just flashing the img file? Or is there something extra that we should be aware of?
zcx

Yes! Just flash the img. Thats all you have to do. If you have unlocked your bootloader unofficially then use only Alka. And if you have unlocked your bootloader officially then use ZCX only.

If you can boot to system try that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58335794&postcount=30
... if not, you have to fastboot new recovery.

I have a doubt..
If I make a twrp backup of the stock ROM without any modifications.. Then when I restore the backup in future will I be able to get the OTA update of OOS??
Anyone?
Yes you should be OK for OTA updates with a stock non-rooted backup

Yes if backup is of non-rooted ROM and with original recovery (not with TWRP) then you will be fine.

By simply restoring your device from backup (Original ROM) and then install OTA updates by doing system update.

So instead of flashing TWRP recovery on your phone, you can simply boot your phone in TWRP by -
Code:
fastboot boot <twrp img>
And once your phone is booted in TWRP, you can create backup.
If you noticed we are giving fastboot command to boot in twrp only (not flashing TWRP on our phone).

Yeah.. But what's the difference.. I mean making backup by just booting twrp and using a flashed twrp.. As now twrp also supports OTA updates..

Difference is - with Flashed twrp your backup will have custom recovery as compare to booting twrp in which you will have original recovery in backup.
Yes, now twrp supports OTA updates. So you just have to download OTA's and flash through twrp. But, I still prefer to make backup of originial rom just in case I messed up something.

I hope this works.. This would make it easier to change roms.. And would Save data too.. As I don't have to download full OOS
So i am on the new miui using the oficial flash thing (unlocked bootloader oficialy).
The thing is i always wanted to get root and use a kernel on xda here that gives more available memory and solves some of the heating problems when charging (but i know need TWRP ofc) .
So i went to here and checked a few guides however there are many twrp's versions some of them i can't flash miui oficial roms, some of them i need installl boot.img every single time or when i want to restore backup is not just select the backup and done, i need to do something else (is a bit confusing)... so instead i decided to ask you guys directly
The question is:
- If i wanted to use oficial miui but have root and install a kernel and in future just flash the new miui rom again without any stress (just twrp -> flash-> select rom and gapps and done), no boot.img bull****, no flash another twrp etc is it possible??
(before this phone i had moto g(1st gen) and was easy as to put ONE twrp and then would be always flash rom + gapps every single time, no boot.img no firmware, worked for CM12, 12.1 and 13)
Install Alka recovery and back up all the partitions before doing anything.

Although I haven't tried it personally, the TWRP explanation guide here says the Cofface TWRP (linked on that page) automatically patches the boot.img when you flash a new ROM, which I believe solves your problem.

OK so I'm on cm13 and I initially wanted to flash cm14.1 so I flashed the updated TWRP (v3.0.2-0 bc 3.0.2-1 wouldn't boot) and I factory reset and try to flash cm14.1 but I get an error7 and I read that that might be bc I'm on the old bootloader so I try to flash OOS 3.1.4 (newest to my knowledge) but that also fails with an error7 and I tried flashing the stock recovery via fastboot but it won't boot.. any suggestions?

Thanks, I figured it out tho, I had to flash OOS v2.2.0 and it boot fine then after a little searching I found my stock recovery backup from OOS 2.2.0 and it worked, and now I'm updating it to the newest oos version by the OTA in system and after I'm done and fully updated, I'll reflash the latest TWRP and make a nadroid backup and try flashing cm14.1

Hey quick question, do I need to reunlock the bootloader after the method I did? The reason I'm asking is bc when I boot into fastboot to try to reflash twrp (after flashing) I reboot to recovery and it's still the stock recovery? Any suggestions? Thanks

If it's already unlocked, you don't need to do it. Did you lock it again? If you have bootloader locked, flashing recovery will fail. Anyways unlocking will not hurt. FYI Just don't lock bootloader unless you are totally stock with stock recovery.

I didn't relock it but was curious if by reverting to stock and updating to the latest version of oos that it might be locked considering I'm on the newest bootloader now or so I think at least haha

No it will not. I hope you have solved your issue by now.
I've got a SGS4 (I9506) with Cyanogen Mod 13.0 and CWM and I want to switch to LineageOS 15.1 which states I should use TWRP.
1. Does it make a difference whether I use CWM or TWRP?
2. How exactly would I proceed to replace CWM with TWRP?
The only answer I found while searching was to "just use GooManager from the Play Store"...
Thanks in advance
Simple you going to go on twrp and see if a offical twrp exist for your device and if not go on the xda page for your phone and see if any modified twrp bulids exist for your phone and then you flash the twrp image in your recovery and reboot recovery will pop up and now you have twrp I hope this works...

1. It makes difference by not booting into rom when you flash with cwm or older versions of twrp
2. Download twrp from https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=3700668719832239230 .... and flash it with odin..
or extract that .tar and you will find recovery.img then flash that .img with flashify app if you are rooted..
Hope this helps
