MIUI GLOBAL 8.0.6.0 to CM14 - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

First of all, im not very new on android things, but the various type and hardware on kenzo a little bit confuse me.
Okay, i have a 2GB version of kenzo, running MIUI Global stable 8.0.6.0, i want to know if the procedure that i would like to do is right.
1. Unlocking my bootloader (still waiting for the approval)
2. Installing twrp.
Nah for the no 2, do i have to do any additional things or i just reboot it right away after installing twrp? (Im not interested on rooting because i dont need it atm).
3. Flashing the mandatory fw, cm14, and the gapps.
Can i actually flash them all on my current miui version? Or do i have to be on developer or something of a kind?
Thanks for your replies.
It means a lot to me, really.

If you don't want to root, then don't flash SuperSU.
And for installing the ROM, first flash the developer ROM.
Download the developer ROM. Go the Updates > Choose Update Package > Choose the Developer ROM and install it.
Then,
Install twrp.
Transfer the CM14 Firmware, ROM, GApps to your Internal Storage.
Reboot to recovery.
Backup your current ROM. (Select everything)
Go to wipe > advanced wipe > choose everything except internal storage and microSD card.
Go to install > flash firmware > then ROM > then GApps.
Reboot

So there is a must to be on developer rom in order to install cm14?

It is preferred to install Developer ROM and install Pico GApps if you want the VoLTE access. If you don't want, then no need.
Hit the thanks button if it helped. ?

Install the customised twrp for Redmi Note 3 since it helps to install OTA updates when using MIUI ROMs.
Hit thanks if it helped.

wtf begging for likes?
what does pico gapps have to do with VoLTE?!
its not even needes to be on dev rom, its just recommended to use 6.11.24+ firmware for CM14 thats why... I usually just flash eu rom, epicrom, multirom, miuipro whichever of these, because they never relock BL.

After unlocking the bootloader, install Alka recovery and back up all the partitions before doing anything. Copy the back up to a safe place , you will need it for whenever you mess up.

With official recovery you have to flash modified boot.img while flashing MIUI rom, with alka you don't have to. Also alka backs up all the partitions, so you don't have to worry about lost imei or bootloader relocking or any other problem. Just restore the backup and you will be right back from where you started.
Also go through these threads while waiting for your unlock permisssion

http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html

also, zcx twrp can also backup all partitions + disables dm verity, just like alka does.
only switching from LP to MM or vice versa locks bootloader and flashing fastboot rom via edl does that too. some roms also lock it...

Same here. I too bought a 16gb version. But confused why I need to flash any developer ROM.
Can't I simply flash twrp after unlocking the bootloader officially and then flash any ROM from twrp(while on the MIUI GLOBAL 8.0.6.0 version)??
Any help would be appreciated

Sorry for the intreruption but i also have a question. I was on MIUI 8.0.6.0, after that I wiped and flashed appropriate firmware for CM then CM13 then Gapps. What whould one do if he theoretically want to rollback to miui, is it ok to flash latest miui stable rom on top of cm firmware? I miss too much the camera app which had great slo mo and timelapse features. Im also thinking of updating to CM14, dont know yet...seems buggy. Thanks

You can always flash the rom image with the flash tool(that works 100 percent). If you want to flash it from recovery than i think you need to flash lazy flasher after flashing the ROM. Give it a try.

Hello
I am new in the World of Xiaomi and MIUI
I bought a Redmi Note 2 and it had the Oppomart MIUI-Version ist 66.77.33.00 (LHMCNCH)I Stable on it. I am a german user.
I found out that the Rom was not official and it contained useless apps and I couldnt use root either. So I wanted to flash different Roms. After some tries and researches I could flash an inofficial german Rom. But with that I couldnt use Xposed Installer so I wanted an original Rom. I flashed miui_HMNote2_5.10.15_8097474ec2_5.0. But that seems to be completely for chinese users. You can choose english language but there is no google account and no google apps. No play store, nothing. just chinese browsers, chinese apps and the MI Store completely in, guess what, chinese.
And now I cannot flash any Rom. I tried to go back to other Roms, like the german miuidecuro_REDMINOTE2_5.9.24_5.0 that i used before but nothing worked. I keep getting an error telling me "Install update.zip signature verification failed" I wiped all data, made a factory reset but nothing worked. I would even be happy to have the oppomart version back. It was annoying but had at least the playstore
Please help me

Thanks. I never used TWRP. Do I have to download and install it on the phone as an apk file or on the Computer? Sorry I am new and when I google these things I only get more confused. What is the difference between the flashtools MiPhone2015731 and TWRP?
Is it possible to use Stock Android on the note 2 instead of MIUI?

Xioami has started to use licence or something for their roms. So multilanguage rom cant acceptable anymore on orginal system. Twrp is recovery mod for Android devices. Its very simple to install and use. And no you cant. Because nobody doesnt make any stable aosp or something rom. We are waiting.
mee to.
put rom file into internal sotrage, then update ok.
Visit TWRP by going to install and then there must be a hack because you have to do away
Ok. Is there a TWRP App for all phones or does it have to be for Redmi Note 2?
I download the apk, put it on the SD Card and install it from there, is that right? Can I flash the hermes rom from there for Europe?
I never did that so I really have no clue how to do that. The phone is nearly useless right now. I gotta fix this somehow. Thanks for everyone who helps

Hi.
Cant you install a rooted stock rom with stock recovery? Then you need the right TWRP for our phone.
Heres one place where you can find it. http://www.mediafire.com/download/6sf0fsm8vx2o948/twrp287.zip
First try flash it with Mi recovery.
If not you need to download an app from playstore "flashify" with it you flash TWRP. You need a img file so you may have to unzip the recovery.zip
I have flashed Xiaomi.EU 5.10.8 Weekly which is rock stable. You should flash Chainfires last Supersu and install Google Now Launcher if you like something more "stock" and have a appdrawer..
Thanks

Ok thanks I will try that. A few hours ago I managed to flash the xiaomi.eu european version of the 5.10.15. Can I stll flash Roms with that?
Another problem is that I cannot use Xposed Installer and google now launcher. Is that normal?

ok good.
Then i would go to play store an download Flashify . Unzip the TWRP zip, and flash the recovery.img with flashify.
You can also backup kernel and recovery with this app. Its very easy and straight forward.
When you got flashed TWRP , use a file explorer with root privileges and delete the file "recovery-from-boot.bak" placed in System folder. If not you may loose TWRP after reboot.
TWRP is vital so you can make an nandroid backup of everything if/when something goes wrong. And of course flash everything else.
About Google Now Launcher, flash last Supersu zip from Chainfire in TWRP. Then you get permission to change default launcher.
I dont use Xposed for now so you have to Google it.
Only thing i miss is "Reboot to recovery" option, but a lot of apps can do this.
Thanks
Knievel

Ok thanks, I downloaded it. What exactly is the difference between Boot Image and Recovery Image?
Is there an AOSP Rom you can recommend? I really want to get rid of MIUI.

Hi.
Boot image here is kernel.
Im no big fan of Miui myself , but with the right launcher its quite ok.
I have tried a couple of the aosp roms here on Xda . Find them a little buggy, and battery life isnt very good either compared to Miui.
If/when Xiaomi release all needed sources, i think we will get good and stable Aosp and CM roms to flash too.
Thanks

Yes I don't like it either. But there are too many bugs in the Custom Roms. I just want a bug free Rom where I can use xposed

Just unzip the twrp zip. You can do it with a Root Explorer. Then you get a img file.
This img file you can flash with an app called Flazhify ( Google play Store, its free ).
Have you tried this?

Hi,
My phone came with 7.00.66 and it's not rooted. I tried to flash xiaomi eu roms via updater app, but it failed several times.
Also i tried to install twrp via updater app, but it also failed. Can you help me please. :crying:
I was thinking to do this:
1) flash official developer rom via updater app, and hopefully it won't show error, because it is official rom , and it is rooted (?)
2) flash twrp using this method
HOW TO FLASH TWRP RECOVERY VIA FLASHIFY
Warning: Redmi note 2 only (other phone need specific image)
Me and this forum are not responsable for any damage. Do at your own risk
1. download flashify app from playstore and give root acces
2. download img of twrp for redmi 2 note and put in your sd card (I prefer sdext root folder)
3. Open flashify, select "recovery image", find the img file you've downloaded
4. confirm flash, wait until it's done
5. you're now ready to reboot in twrp pressing "reboot now" from flashify.
you can also turn off your phone, press power and volume up and you'll be in twrp.
3) install xiaomi eu rom with twrp
Is this correct way?

Why there are so many complications in flashing different ROMS on RN3 SD Kenzo ?

I used to flash new ROM's on my old Galaxy S2 and there was never a issue of bootloader thing and same goes for old Xiaomi phones like redmi 1s.
But recently When xiaomi started locking bootloader , even after unlocking bootloader ,In most of ROM threads there is warning to delete the bootloader file from MIUI recovery ROM and then flash the ROM through recovery as it'll relock the bootloader.
Why does this happen so ?
1) What is the difference between official and unofficial unlocked bootloader ?
2) How much difference does one make if we want to flash all type of ROM's including MIUI , CM ,RR etc ?
3) Is there any way in which bootloader once unlocked , we don't have to worry about getting it relocked by flashing other ROM's like exactly what happens in most other android smartphones after unlocking their bootloader ?
Please clear the above doubts as it's becoming very confusing and irritating on flashing the ROM and what points needed to be kept in mind to avoid bricking the RN3.
Read this thread, my phone was officially unlocked the bootloader and used alka twrp to flash official rom with the ease. No need to do anything, just flashed it, superSU and exposed. Rebooted my phone, done. Only failed on incremental ota update, rebooted phone and received a second ota full rom and always success.

lack of good/complete tutorials
I believe flashing has always been a tricky job, more or less. The fact of the matter is that (for our device) I see very little complete tutorials in ROM threads, they all focus on the last bit of flashing. Some hazards are being mentioned and in the best case scenario you get a link to a vague solution (cross other forums and boards), never a full tutorial in the starting topic or the second post however. Back in the days you would see full explanations in every ROM thread, first posts were even being reserved for that. Nowadays users are being supposed to know it al which most do not.
Besides from the complete guides I also noticed that whenever something is explained, the explanations themselves are poor in terms of language (grammar as well as vocabulary) causing even more problems for newbies to fully understand what they are up to.
I am ne to the Xiaomi community but I am absolutely not new to flashing, cooking etc. (started back in the days with iPAQ's and so on) but I also had a though time to end up where I am now with a official unlocked phone that is rooted, has a custom recovery and a Xiaomi.eu ROM. MY journey was a long one but I must conclude that none of the steps were a real hazard, but combining everything in a workflow in correct order was a pain in the back.
First thing that came to me was the idea of writing down my experiences in the form of a FULL tutorial, which I might do when I find the time. I am pretty sure this will help many fellow flashers, newbies and pro's, to establish what most of us did.
These were just my two cents.
P.S. One more thing I noticed is that there are a lot of unfinished projects, they do the job that they were needed for, but they do nothing else.
e.g. Why are there so many custom recoveries, are there no developers anymore that can combine them all to one-fits-all ?

That is a lot of If else there
Why we can't just flash any rom after unlocking bootloader officially and always have to fear about bootloader relock again?
If i am not mistaken this situation is in Xiaomi phones right ?

Couple of examples: Xiaomi.eu gives me different locales and languages. It also sets default GPS location to Europe instead of Asia which provides a faster GPS fix. It is however behind in development so it doesn't have MIUI 8 yet.
As for the bootloader unlock: I have not looked into that since there is no need. If you follow all the steps in correct order and with correct ROM's official unlocking cannot go wrong. The culprit however is the complete chaos (now I said it) in instructions and tutorials. So I have not looked into the unofficial bootloader unlocking.

do you mind reading this question and clarify the steps , asked in Official CM13 thread. Nobody answered there:-
"Hey , I've unlocked RN3 bootloader unofficialy and currently on MIUI stable version with root and TWRP recovery.
I want to taste official CM13 but no plans to use it , just test it. After using it for day or 2 , i want to switch back to my MIUI ROM.
What should be the ideal steps through which i can avoid all these hassles of Bootloader relock stuff.
Can't we just normally go back to MIUI ROM by restroing using TWRP backup ?
Here's what i'll do , please correct the steps:-
1) Flash TWRP alka version and make complete backup of current MIUI ROM.
2) Wipe system ,data, cache, dalvik cache.
3 First flash CM-fIrmware file,then CM13 ROM , then gapps.
4) Reboot and use CM for 2-3 days.
Now to go back to the MIUI ROM backup:-
1) Reboot to alka recovery.
2) Wipe system ,data, cache, dalvik cache.
3) restore the MIUI Nandroid backup (Deselect firmware file.)
4) Reboot
DONE ! Back to MIUI.

I did the same steps above after flashing resurrection remix with cm13 radio, after restoration of miui from twrp Alka backup my fingerprint sensor stopped working bcos the firmware didn't restore and I unchecked that partition so what i did was again.
1) go back to twrp Alka
2) flash the full MIUI 8 rom .zip and rebooted
3) then the fingerprint started working .
So Alka twrp has a bug in Restoration of firmware partition .so be careful and have a full twrp Alka backup and then flash cm13 and firmware

They look more or less correct, I choose not to go the CM way (yet) since there are still some flaws that I can't live with.
I would try to go to official unlock, whatever it takes. It just looks more solid & safe from what I have been reading so far.
Also I would choose to use an other Recovery:
Official TWRP with F2FS Support
• Based on official TWRP 3.0.2-2 & updated CyanogenMod source
• Adds Support For F2FS based file systems.
• Used for flashing official CyanogenMod 13 based ROMs.
• Users with official unlocked bootloader will have to flash Universal Boot Img Patcher (UBP) after flashing MIUI Recovery ROM Zip.
• Users with unofficial unlocked bootloader should strictly not use this TWRP for flashing MIUI Recovery ROM Zip.
That seems optimized for CM the most.
II should tell you that I received the phone two days ago and I am also still catching up on reading.
Add on, taken from the above link:

How to install GSI ROMs

Guys, as all are aware of GSI images available but cannot flash, then follow the steps....
A. Clean Install :-
1. install modified redwolf(link= https://drive.google.com/uc?authuser=5&id=1H7znKopLAL2u0JJEIPb8ANayAhtTB-xz&export=download) or modified TWRP(link= https://sourceforge.net/projects/te...Treble/TWRP-3.2.1-0-land(Treble).img/download)...
2. go to settings in recovery and enable treble mode...
3. install any treble ROM of your want...
4. go to wipe-> swipe to factory reset...
5. go to install-> select images->select the file-> flash type - system image...
6. wait for flashing system...
7. reboot...
8. set up device...
9. go to recovery and flash magisk and other stuffs you want(Magisk treble link= https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=962187416754478287)
B. Dirty Install:-
1. go to recovery->wipe->advanced wipe-> system, cache , dalvik
2. follow steps from A.5 to A.9..

What does Dirty Install mean? Does it mean i wont lose any app installed in my phone?
Do we need to go setting in recovery and enable Treble mode just like clean install?
I am currently running official stock rom

Dirty install means you can install ROM without losing data... It is only available if you want to upgrade your ROM not changing the ROM...
Yes enabling treble mode is mandatory...
First time you need clean install...
So first install the twrp, then format data... It'll erase your internal storage... Mandatory if you are coming from miui otherwise you'll face encryption problem...
Format data then install any treble ROM no matters but keep in mind that it must be either GSI or any treble or non treble ROM for our device...

After install TWRP,do i need to disable dm verity? And format data means wipe system, vendor, data, cache, dalvik? Also after flash new rom, some guides tell to flash lazy flasher, is it still necessary?
What's the different between GSI and Treble rom? I know pixel experience is treble rom. But GSI? Any example?

dm verity is for flashing miui recovery ROMs, not required for custom ROMs...
format data means like formatting a pendrive... it'll wipe everything in it... excluding some root system core files and recovery stuffs...
lazy flasher is dm verity flasher... as said its always for miui ROMs... some says to flash after installing xposed which is wrong...
you can keep it... just in case you see bootlloop which is a dream...
Treble=ROM containing vendor files for a device(for flashing GSI)
GSI= generic system image which is a universal file which doesnt contain vendor files, so you need to flash a treble ROM before flashing a GSI so that it boots up...
there's pixel experience gsi image available which you can only flash if there's any treble ROM pre installed...
Hi, I tried asop gsi over pixel experience treble rom, just for fun ?
Phone boot, but no GSM network, no Sim card found... All the rest looks to be OK...
What I've done wrong?
Any idea?

Have you factory data reset before installing ROM??? Then it should work... Just in case of you still face issue then use lineage as base...

Tried resurrection remix and network works, but home don't... Need clean data maybe, no time to try... Maybe later, I think when full whipe it should work.
By the way, as we have good compiled up to date rom, it is not really useful for now...
Thanks for the guide. I have some doubts.
1.My device is currently running on los15.1(Rooted with magisk), can i do dirty flash?
2.Will Google release gsi for official oreo-treble devices?
3.Assume my device is running on RR-gsi now i want to flash another gsi, do i have to perform a clean flash or dirty flash?

Custom Pie ROM back to MIUI

Hello everybody!
I currently have on my kenzo the lastest AOSP Extended Pie. I have an officially unlocked bootloader and the latest TWRP.
Now, I want to sell my device, and therefore I need to get back to MIUI.
Is there an easy way to flash MIUI retaining TWRP and even the bootloader unlocked?
Thanks in advance!
if i recall correctly, you flash lazyflasher and then MIUI rom. that should allow you to keep your bootloader unlocked while having stock MIUI rom
Thanks @Doplan. Actually I never used Lazyflasher. I need to read more about it.
I was hoping to put the phone on a default factory state, with the original ROM.
Searching how to make this procedure, the results lead to the MiFlash tool, while using a fastboot ROM (from official MIUI). It seems there is an option to re-lock the bootloader.
Which means I have a choice about leaving it locked or unlocked - haven't decided yet. Not sure if the person (I will sell it to) is as tech savvy as we in this forum are. So even might be preferable to lock the bootloader.

Lol.....No neeed of miui. Rn3 is old phone. Just keep Aex Pie instlled with twrp official.
Altleast Aex pie has auto OTA push .its very decent stable build better than miui 10.2 which was last official update. And no more official update is expected from xiaomi. And also miui 10.2 is worst release with battery drain.
The buyer will consider used rn3 to buy if he finds it is installed with android 9.

I think the phone is still totally capable of doing almost any task. For non power users, and if the price is right, I think it still is a reasonable choice. In a quick survey, I found people selling this in the 80 - 120€ price range (in my home country Portugal).

Can I install directly a modified MIUI (eg. xiaomi.eu) via TWRP coming from AEX? If it's an official global ROM MiFlash is the way to go.
@Black_Stark I personally also prefer the pure Android experience. That will depend on the type of user that will buy the phone.
I just guessed the average person looking for a phone (cheap, used) might not care about custom ROMs, or unlocked bootloaders. Just want the original software.
For authenticity purposes, I'd flash the latest stock MIUI with lock option. Then it's up to the buyer if he wants to mess around with ROMs or other modifications.
Simply install official miui stable rom from TWRP
Download the recent official stable version of the ROM from the officail website of miui >>> <<<
Keep it in the internal memory, then booting into TWRP , install the ROM before wiping data, system, cache & dalwik
Then intall the Stock Rom / Latest miui zip file and preferably lazy patcher as well.
Then you are good to go .... Boot into the system
Lazyflasher/Stock ROM/Latest MIUI
Thanks... Hope it might help.

You mean:
1. Install official ROM (from internal storage) direcly over my current ROM (AEX Pie);
2. Full Wipe (system, data, cache and dalvik cache);
3. Install the same official ROM again (from internal storage);
4. Install LazyFlasher;
5 Reboot.

Hi.
Do it like this, install TWRP and then the operating system of your choice. There is also the question of how you could install the ROM without TWRP.
Hardbrick with TWRP, never, I don't think so.
I have now easily shot my device 20 times and put it on again and again, definitely shot 100 devices over 10,000 times over the years and never suffered a hard brick.
You can do it, otherwise the heroes will help you here. :highfive:

Hi,
this happens because your system partition is "broken".
If you go to "Wipe" and select "Format Data" there it will delete all partitions and the system of your device.
Then you start again in the TWRP and connect the device via USB to a PC or via OTG to a stick on which you have the operating system of your choice and drag it to your device.
Then select the ZIP / OS in the TWRP under "Install" and have it installed. It also creates the new partitions that he could not find with you.
I wish you success:fingers-crossed:

Don't think format data wipes the system partition does it?
Unless Xiaomi have really changed things, data should be completely separate. Format data should wipe the internal storage only which includes cache partition.
Twrp can wipe system, but shouldn't do unless specifically chosen to do so via several steps, not a single button press.

no data format dont touch system
Yes, of course not the whole system partition, sorry.
From German into English is sometimes not that easy.?
In this case, TWRP will of course only delete the data as it stands there.
Otherwise everyone will find a step by step guide for almost every device a thousand times, thanks to you. So it should be also possible for everyone here.
Best regards and thank you two.:highfive:

I also want to go back to stable ROM
Its very simple to bypass the Anti rollback on miflash, just download the fastboot version of the ROM you want to install, unzip it and you'll have to edit this file (flash_all.bat), with for instance note++. And you remove 5 or 6 lines that does not begin by FASTBOOT. You can't miss it.
You can close and save.
Afterwards, just flash that same file that you just edited, and no more anti rollback error!
A second tip that I have when you just can't install custom firmwares on the mi 10, just flash stock firmware with miflash, reboot and flash TWRP. Transfer your custom firmware to your phone, flash it and ONLY format data afterwards! It was the only way to get a custom firmware on my mi10. It's my 5th xiaomi device and never experienced something like this...tried all TWRP available for the mi 10, but only by doing this way, I was able to succesfully install xiaomi.eu.
Good luck!
