Hello Gear S family.
I need a honest advice on Purchasing gear S. I want to jump into smartwatches world but i am limited on budget. I selected No.1 G6 chinese smartwatch for $40 but then i looked around and saw Gear S in used for $100.
Is it still worth that price? I don,t want to spend more on a watch whose usability i know isn,t going to be much.
My main usage would be accepting calls, fitness tracking and notifications. Are there any issues with this gadget?
Looking forward to some good advices. Thanks

Anyway to clear notifications from phone automatically once read from connected gear?
Yes it worth getting if you like the look
To clear notification you must select clear on the notification menu, not happen automatically.

Gear receive notification from android phone. So try to see if you can disable notification SIM2 on your phone settings ?
Go ahead man with gear s without thinking. It is a great gadget and will fullfill all of your mentioned requirements. I have just bought one recently and have found it an excellant machine. Only issue with my machine is that its sim card does not work in Pakistan, which means it can not operate for messaging and calling at its own. However, it works perfectly fine with your samsung mobile.

Hello!
I read today that Strava Running/Cycling app now supports Gear Fit, and today they have released an update that fixes some problems with Gear Fit.
Has anyone tried Strava and Gear Fit together? You need a premium subscription to get heart rate working, and I'm concidering a premium subscription if anyone can confirm that heart rate is recorded when using Strava.
Thank you for answers!

I think the app connects automatic if you check the option in app connection section. But you have to have a premium subscription to register the heart rate - as far as I have understood.
It works! Even with the free version.Nice!
You can start stop via the Fit. Great potential.
Hope now for runtastic and others.

I can get it to work with free version of strava but cannot get the heart rate, do you able to get heart rate on free version of strava?
I am considering get the premium version if anyone confirm it is able to get heart rate from gear fit.
Thanks

Indeed it works with free version of strava, without HR monitoring. You can start / stop new session from the fit, and see several details (speed, distance...)
Same question here : anyone knows whether HR monitoring works with the premium version?
also on gear 2?
Is this only possible with gear fit or also with Gear 2 (neo)?
I can't find any strava option in my gear manager for gear 2 neo.
It looks Strava is similar with Gear Fit Manager. Why do we need to bother one more app?

Thanks for your response. Let me see if it fits to me.
Just received response back from Strava Support that Strava not able to read HR data in GearFIT SDK at the moment , even on Strava Premium. Hope Samsung will open it up soon on the GearFIT SDK.
Below is the response I received:
"
Hello,
Sorry about that. Currently, the GearFIT SDK does not allow us to read HR data, but maybe it will in the future. Please accept my sincere apologies and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Cheers,
Rudolph

"
I work for Strava and was part of the Gear Fit & Gear2 implementation. In our next Play release the Fit support is a little cleaner, a couple bugs fixed, etc... We did the best we could in a limited amount of time. Anyhow, if there are any other questions or comments, I'm happy to answer the best I can.
With regards to the internal HR sensor, I'd suggest checking out this review http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/04/pinnacle-samsungs-activity.html
also...
Not quite advertised yet but the new Gear devices also support really real time segments. Right now the Apps & Apps+ Pebble do audio announcements at 0%, 50% & 100%. The Gear watches give you updates as soon as your device knows 0-100% w/ your time against your PR. We did this in Glass too. (Disclaimer: Starred segments & premium users only)
Thanks for the explanation.
Btw. have you asked Samsung about the accesibility of HR sensor data ?
It´s really weird if they allow it on Gear 2 for 3rd party apps, but not on Gear Fit .....
I'm using a gear fit with strava, it's great getting the real time segment performance.
Star the segments you're interested in for best results.
Took a bunch of time off my PRs as a result.

Yeah, I think in time access will come for the Fit. Gear2 just had a little head start in terms of dev from what I can tell.
Fit was clearly rushed out when it wasn't ready in order to get out with the Gear 2 and S5.
Installed Strava on my Samsung Device. It also shows up in the app-connection on my fit. But how to start a new session directly from my fit? Or do i have to carry my phone with me all the time while running and start the session from my phone?

However, this is not true, as Gear 2 owner I can tell Strava app on Gear 2 doesn't provide access to HR data from the watch (you can only use some sensors supported by the phone app itself). Care to comment?

That's true, we don't support HR values from the Gear 2 at the moment. When I wrote that our Gear2 app did, but by the time the app got out of QA into the store it was disabled*. SDK access wise to HR sensor though. Gear2 yes, Gear Fit no.
*would be easy to enable with a tiny bit of exploring.

That's OK mate, HR sensor on Gear 2 is a piece of crap anyway. The reason why I don't use Strava is because is doesn't support the kind of chest-strapped BT LE HRM I have (right now it supports only Orion or something like this). Until it does, I'll stick to MapMyRun or Runtastic.
Yesterday I received my Gear Fit from Amazon us.
My first impression is not bad but there are still some points that are missing or i didn't found them -->
- They are some standard answers stored that only can send via sms to not accepted calls.
Is it possible to send standard answers to whatsapp/ hangouts or facebook chat?
- Why its not possible to accept a call?
- In Whatsapp no photos are shown ...why not?
- Notification LED ...little point on the screen?
- Touch gestures... three finger tip opens xyz , swipe opens ...
- Training what about fitness training ? only running, bycing, Swimming?
Would be great if custom roms could be done for this device ...i do not expect that Samsung will improve the device that much.

Gear doesn't have OS, so there won't be custom ROM!
Gear are primarily focused on sports and simple notification. If you want more you had to bought Gear 2, Sony SmartWatch 2, LG G Watch or Gear Live.

1) Download Gear Fit Phone from Google Play. Then go into it and then settings. you can accept the call through the Gear Fit but it will answer on your phone.
2)Whatsapp isn't compatible. Ask the Whatsapp makers to make a SAMSUNG_CUP_ENABLED app so you can answer through your gear fit.
3)If you can't fell a vibration for 2 seconds on your hand your really not sensitive...
4)You can have custom ROM's, Just that it will be very very very light ROM because the Gear Fit has almost no memory, because of that the answers that you can send back to your SMS are from the phone.
The Gear fit has an RTOS, Real Time Operating system, Most of his things are from the phone. All apps that you download from GP like Gear Fit Phone must be on your phone and the Gear must be connected. You will get a option on your phone named App Connect where the apps are.
I hope I helped!

Dude, i was one of the active "dreamers" of iPhone and Gear 1 combination back in the day.
Search for youtube video "How to fully use the Galaxy Gear with an iPhone" which i had made.
I have achieved similar functionality between Gear S and iPhone, only this time you also need another device.
I have made a new video and (hopefully) within the day both it and the instructions on how to do it will be posted in XDA forum and on YouTube.
However, what you are saying would be great. If only a service like newtifry was available for Tizen OS platform.

Working on LG G2
Thank you, It's working and in my case I use LG G2 as a notification relay
Anyway sometime when I pick up a call on Gear S it automatically transfers to iPhone which really annoy.
To fix this, On iPhone go to Setting > General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing select Headset

So let me get this straight. Be "remotely" connected to a Samsung phone can that be with Wifi OR 3G? In other words, you don't need to be remotely connected on the same wifi as the Samsung phone, just connected to the internet somehow on the Gear S which is linked to that Samsung phone? Am I understanding that right?

yup, its all in the cloud somewhere..... and nobody understand the cloud. I was experimenting with battery life and turned off bluetooth and used 4g all day, within a few minutes my gear gave me a confirmation that call forwarding was on and my phone said "connected remotely", notifications to my phone came to the watch just the same but a few seconds delayed vs a bluetooth connection.

@swyner You got that right. You can buy the cheapest comptaible Samsung phone and remotely connect to it. All you need is keep it charged at all times and connected to your home router and of course setting it up with all your accounts/apps you wanna be notified about.
Problem is, with that setup you cannot connect the watch to the iPhone via BT.
In order to do that as well you need to follow my method in the OP. And of course root your watch (see @cipherswitch's guide).

So I have the following on my iphone today. 1) both iMessages (from iphone users) and text messages coming through imessage to my phone number. I have 2 email accounts, one Gmail and the other is setup in the iPhone Mail app but it's "controlled" by Mobile Iron for work. On other smartwatches that work with iPhone I get all these notifications on the watch. However, all replies and interactions are done on my iPhone.
If I move to this Gear S alternative, I can setup my Mobile Iron work email on an android (this is possible now). However, it requires a PIN to get in and see and reply to emails pretty much every 10 minutes. However, it will post notifications of new email with the short description. If I am unable to "unlock" the Divide/Mobile Iron email client on the Samsung phone at home, I wonder how this notification will look on the Gear S? Will I be able to reply to it? Likely not as the Gear S just provides notifications, right? As for Gmail, that is easy as I can set that up on Samsung phone at home and notifications will come through and I will be able to read the whole email.
As for text messages, I wonder we can use that solution someone came up with for the Gear 1 and install that message forwarding trick that can relay imessage and text message on a jailbroken iPhone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784802&page=9 If this could be done on the Samsung phone at home, then I would hope that I could "see" those notifications on the Gear S......

@swyner Dude, as long as smth is considered a notification on the compatible Sammy phone, then it can be forwarded to the watch via the remote connection.
It is true that most notifications on the watch are not actionable, UNLESS you are using the more than excellent Gear Notification Extender by @gottahavit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s/themes-apps/exclusive-to-xda-alpha-release-gear-t2941977
That particular software can handle all notifications and provide actionable notifications. However, you still need to download the beta and see for yourself if that particular client is supported.
I have extensively used the cloudnotifier Cydia tweak in the past, with my Gear 1 and iPhone. It was actually a desperate (but it did work!) way to emulate the "Remote connection" Samsung is currently offering. No actionable notifications, though!
So with cloudnotifier a kind of remote connection is set up between a JB iPhone and a Gear 1 running Null ROM that is being tethered to the internet.
Therefore one could assume that we could again use cloudnotifier in order to "fetch" from the iPhone SMSs and iMessages. Unfortunately there is a catch. You have to be able to install smth on the Gear S that catches what the iPhone is sending over the internet, and i do not think anything like that is available for Tizen OS.
If you can find smth, please let us know.
Hope that helped.
BTW, you may wanna see my previous video where i present my setup of Gear 1 and iPhone 5S.

I will definitely go down that path IF I decide to go this route. I have been looking for a real solid Smartwatch for iphone and the Gear S is just an amazing device. I am not a huge fan of the size though.....that is what is holding me back from actually buying one. So I am now just investigating the possibilities before I take the plunge.

My man, if you want the SIM card functionality, the Gear S is the only thing available out there.
Of course the Apple Watch will be smoothly integrated in the Apple ecosystem, but you will still need to carry the phone with you at all times.
It really is a liberating feeling not having to carry a phone with you at all times. Yet remain (somewhat) connected.

Oh I hear ya! That is what is so tempting. I just wish in Canada we could have 2 SIM cards with 1 phone number so I can literally use my Gear S as my iphone (number and text messages) if needed. Will keep you posted

We have that in Greece and it is very convenient.
However you do not really need that, since the Gear S supports call forwarding.
It is rather smartly implemented from what I've read.
Check the forums.

Will that call forward feature work only on the Samsung phone at home?? If so, there will be no SIM in there, just in my iPhone (main phone) and Gear S. And if iPhone is connected to Gear S via Bluetooth, I will be able to make and receive calls from the Gear S using my iPhone connection? Is there a way to make a call from the Gear S that does not use the SIM in the Gear S but the Bluetooth connection to iPhone?
Anyway, I think the phone function is fine for me. It's the texting...would love to text from Gear S but have it coming from my iPhone phone number...hence the desire to have 2 SIMS with one phone number.
Anyway, Gear S just went on sale in Canada for $50 off so that may seal the deal!!!
Hi everyone! I'm using Gear S in standalone mode, so i wasn't able to find Holo watch face :
Could anybody post a wgt for it?

You obviousely didn't read. The OP said in Standalone Mode. This means he doesn't have access to the store thanks to Samsung's stupidity.

No biggie, though battery life is good info. While I kind of wanted it myself, because it looks cool. Though, if it really hurts battery life, screw it. I rather keep my current clock and keep my 2 days of battery life without using the charger's battery to refresh it. If i used that, i could probably go 3-4 days without plugging it in.

What Clock do u use? I use Big Clock Launcher, and after 9h still got like 50% (reading notification, some replays, clock, sometims calls, timer/stopwatch). Last day I use default blue face on Gear S and watch died very fast - what is the point has good looking face if that make battery life shorter even if u have "small powerbank made for S"? The clock is only small piece of smartwatch - but for some people, this is imporat, they have a digital rolex on hand... There is also not much good apps, in Galaxy Apps u find many faces but not many good apps - but if u found it - pay 1€/2€.
Only normal Android like _NULL for first Gear smartwatch can be something more usefull like first Gear (secret recording, mxplayer, opera, quickpic and photospheres, etc) - when, we can unleash the beast, otherwise just just another good watch but limited because, nobody want make big improvments just small.
I'm using a digital clock with date and the step counter. It was on my Gear S when I got it. I originally wanted the one like it with weather, but the weather never updates in standalone mode. I can't stand how locked down Samsung made this thing. It's basically a smartphone on your wrist, but stupid Samsung had to make it tied to a damn Samsung smartphone. Good way to hinder sales and prompt many to just return the device.
it drains battery too much
I've Searched the Samsung app store and could not find this watchface? Did it get removed

Sorry I dont have any idea how to make it.
My version of Samsung Gear is: 2.2.15111841
and firmware of Gear S watch: R750AUCU1OB1
Sorry to revive a year old post here. But mozillaopera do you still have the holo watchface on your smartwatch? If so, I am looking for it also and I can tell you how to post it up here.
Or hardman247 were you ever able to find a copy?
*It's an OWSC file (not a wgt), and it's stored on whatever phone was linked to your watch to install it (because you install watch faces from the gear app on your phone and then they get transfered to your watch).
Thanks for your replies!
Here's the youtube video link that shows this awesome watch face in action!

I have it! Found it some time ago on a russian forum...
But I warn you, it will suck your battery faster than a regular watchface. But yes, it's awesome
Aww, can't post links... well, just cut+paste:

frodone you are awesome! Thank you. Feels like I've been searching for this silly thing forever, and now I have it.
In case anyone else wants to install this:
Download the SDB kit
Put your gear s in usb debugging
Make sure your computer sees it "SDB Devices"
SDB Install the file frodone just uploaded, and it will appear in your watch face selector (long press watch face).
Thanks again frodone!
*Rename attached file with a .wgt extension (instead of .txt). XDA wouldn't let me upload a .wgt file for some reason. Not my file, but enjoy!
Hello. Still have someone beautiful watch face?
