[Q] Z5 dead after sinking in a pool - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there! 2 days ago, my father threw me into a pool with my Z5 in my pocket, and when i took it out and tried to put it on, it vibrated 3 times, I then put it in rice for 5 hours, waited a bit, and then charged it the very next day. 1 day later, I'm still charging it, no lights and it does not vibrate. It's completely dead. What should I do? Is it too early to get worried?
Thanks.
Matt

After all, it's an electric device, and they don't like water. Putting a phone on when it's wet, can be enough to damage the electronics in a way it won't be fixable. Ever.
So probably it's too late to do anything about it. Of course there will always be stories about phones that tolerate a swimming pool, or start working again after a few days. So you can give it a try, and really dry it, and try to put it on again next week.
By the way, in general it's not ok to try to put it on immediately (after it went off), and 5 hours is way too short to let it dry.

Bad story
It's a known story that Sony claims their phones to be waterproof while they are not, in facts.
It was common with z3 and happens again with Z5, there's also a video test on yt, if I remember well.
I would follow guides on the Web and let it dry for days. Eventually, you could try with the warranty service, explaining that it was not waterproof as advertised (you washed it in a sink, obviously)

I concur.
My girlfriend knocked her phone off the counter into the toilet when she was sick (needless to say phone had some chunks on it as well). It was game over. luckily in US we are able to insure it and we are now getting a new one for the one time "low cost" of $125. 125 is better than a full retail, thats for sure. I made her call AT&T before just to see if we could weasel a SII on early upgrade, no dice.

First suck all the beer out of it! Want not waste not!

Best thing to do would have been to take out the battery/sim/sdcard and put in dry rice immediately, then leave overnight. Might not be too late either, but def should have done that right away. Right after I got my Captivate I got really drunk and accidentally soaked it, I didnt even realize it had gotten so wet until I woke up the next morning and tried to turn it on. It even tried to boot, showing the Samsung screen briefly then immediately turning off. Taking the battery door off there was water drops inside. After about 18 hours in rice I was soooo surprised that it booted right up and I havent had a problem out of it to this day!! I still use it all the time.

It wasnt even beer, it was just raining loads so it got soaked in my pocket
Thanks for the advice guys, i put it in dry rice so we'll see how that goes *fingers crossed*
So i have put it in dry rice, and well it booted up but the touch screen was unresponsive, and so was the fingerprint sensor leaving me with no way to actually use any of the phones features, i think there is a tiny bit of water left so im going to stick it in rice a bit longer but try and get the screen repaired if that doesnt help,
Is there anyway i can access the stuff on my phone using the usb connection maybe?
Sorry to hear about your phone. My son got pushed into a swimming pool with his Atrix in his pocket. It is fully functional today.
What we did.
Rice and a warm spot. Not for hours... It took a whole week before everything straightened out. There was an issue with the sim and sd card readers, but nothing an emery board didn't fix.
First mistake, you turned (tried to) it on. Second mistake...........you turned it on too soon after putting it in rice.
One day in dry rice is not enough. If you read guides about water damage you will see that you really should have the phone in dry ice for 5 days. Never ever plug it into the charger or turn it on before you do this. Only takes one wee drop of liquid to short something out.
Next, you should strip the phone down and clean everything internally to make sure you will not suffer from oxidation and corrosion in the future. Many phones will work after being in dry rice, only to succumb to corrosion after a few weeks or months because all the connectors inside became oxidized.
In short, water damage is horrible, but there are many guides on the internet specific to this outside of XDA which can help you. The iPhone water damage guides are especially useful, even though the hardware is different. The concept is exactly the same.
First rule is always do not attempt to turn the phone on, and do not plug into a charger.

Hope this helps, the phone that I mentioned, was turned on immediately after getting wet. His girlfriend was the smart one and pulled the battery for him.
We sat it in the rice and checked it every day by turning it on. (I am in no way recommending this btw, simply reporting an experience.). Each day it seems like it got better and better. The last two days everything was working, but there was still evidence of moisture on the screen. So we baked it for a few extra days. I did have an advantage over you. The outside temp was 100 plus and I sat his, in that bag of rice, on the hood of a red car everyday for most of the afternoon. It will most likely take longer with a cooler temp to work with.
We may have been 'lucky'. But this is so you know that there is a great chance that everything will be fine.
well, an update on my girlfriend's PUKE phone:
The day I posted that was I think thursday, we let is sit all thursday- friday- saturday. On sunday (around noon) she couldnt handle the Nokia 3360 any longer. When she left for her "mani/pedi", I sat down with the poor phone. After a little cleaning of contacts and such I was able to get it to boot and come up. When she got home it was up and going. She was thrilled and I got a "reward".
She used it all Sunday and today until the insurance joint came in. The only thing that didnt totally dry was the screen. It looked like pure hell, but worked. She said anythign was etter than the old green screen nokia
PS- she had tried to turn it on friday and got a "Modem Failed to Initialize: Starting RSD". Sunday it worked fine.
i dropped my phone in the toilet. managed to take it out. it was still in the power on state. removed battery asap! whats next?? shall i get it some heat, hair drier or bulb ?? how many day do i need to keep this phone in the rice? also im not an expert in disassembling!!! any suggestions?
I've heard up to a week but a couple days will probably work. I would probably just use a can of compressed air. Hair dryers can create enough heat to loosen the adhesive for screens on phones. Maybe place it near a vent or put it on a window sill with sunlight?

[Q] Is this the motherboard?

Is this the motherboard?
I've dropped my phone in the toilet, so its water damaged. If it was so that it actually soaked up tons of water then I'd be sure that the whole phone needs to be replaced, but it was there for less than a half of a second.
So I'm quite sure that the motherboard is what needs replacing, and that's exactly what I'm looking for now. However I can't find anything available that looks any closer to a motherboard than this and by such, I'd like to know what this does.
Thankful for any response!
*cough*
Happy for any response!
None of that kind of parts are available yet.
You're phone is wrecked, even after just half a second(there's no way you dropped it and still managed to react that fast ^^ ). Go buy a new phone.
And that part is the headphone port.
Just try to dry your phone. There are many tricks at google and youtube.
Good luck.
yeah try to dry it in dry rice or something like that for 24 hours , but dissassemble it !
When I charge the phone, a red lamp lights up to say its charging. But that's the only lifesign it has.
I dropped the phone over three weeks ago. I had it in rice for about a week, though I didn't disassemble it. Is that bad?
Disassemble and use hair dryer for about 15 min then assemble and put on charge for 5-6 hours.
This is the last chance.

Still think there's water after one week of rice and two additional weeks of waiting? I don't think I can disassemble it though, since the insurance probably want to check it. Too many people trying to get phones for they're cousins.
Hair dryer for 15 mins would be how much for rice-drying?
If you tried to power it on BEFORE the week in rice, forget it, tis fried.
Putting any power to it will fry the circuits
On top of that the screen will be damaged from being in water, even if it drys out you'll either have no picture or blotches on the screen from where the water got in, speaker damage is also possible...in sort its bricked

I dropped my 920 in water!

I love my Lumia 920. I consider it as the best phone I ever had. Last night the official Nokia gel case arrived and I immediately put it on to see how it feel (it is slippery, I think I like the icipico skin case better). I don't know why I did something that no one with a phone should do, playing it above water. As usual, shxt happens, I dropped it into the water. 1st second, "SHXT"!, 2nd second, there goes my "almost" free phone. 3rd second, picked up the "diviing" 920 and start thinking should I buy another 920 or wait for something new. I picked up the phone, and turn it off immediately, thinking what to do next, blow dry it? leave it off for a few days and hope it will still boot up.
I am an anxious person, can't wait to find out if this phone will work not to mention I beginning to consider buying an international version (mine is AT&T). I turned it on. IT BOOTED UP and continue to function as usual. 12 hours had passed and it still function as usual.
Now, I love the 920 even more, because it is my first phone that can survive a 3 seconds diving experience (most phones are gone after 1 second).
Yeah, it will work, for a month, 2, maybe even more, then, one day, it will just stop working and thats it. What u should have done, is take it into a bag of rice (it can help get the moisture out), then head to some1 who has an ultrasonic tub, dismantle it, put everything in, and vaporise the moisture out of it.
So now, u just enjoy the time u have with ur phone till it dies

You SCARING me ! Anyway, it is a good idea to put the phone into the raw rice to obsorb the moisture. However, that's all I can do cuz I don't know anywone who can take the 920 apart.
Hopefully, the phone will continue to function until the next Nokia WP arrives.
ask pro's
My tipp in this case:
Ask professionals how they threat a water accident like this.
If you took it out fast out of the water maybe not a lot of water went in.
the danger in this water stuff is just the shortcut damage. you did the right thing by turning it of imediatly.
And you should wait befor you us it again.
I think somewhere was the advice to drop the phone in to alcohol to get the water out etc. thats just a speculation.
Only Isopropil-alcohol is good, other r killing the phone. Also, u must not drop the phone to alcohol, but take it apart, then wipe it with a soft cloth soaked in isopropil-alcohol, and then leave it for several hours to dry off. And as I mentioned earlier, the best way to evaporate all the water is by ultrasonic tub.
The shortcut danger is immediate, the water is hazardous to ur phone also on a longer term basis. What will happen is that the metalic parts inside will corode, and that will kill ur phone.
Sorry mate, use it as much and as long as possible, and when it dies, buy a new one. It won't happen any time soon, I think u might get around 3-6 months out of it.
AW: I dropped my 920 in water!
Sell the phone and buy a new 920 ... ?
Just kidding...

you should have a look at the water-damage sticker. take the sim tray out and there's another little metal tray you can pull out with the sim removal tool.
put it into rice , the rice will absolve the moist, see if that could save your phone.
Nice one, man... If it works, don't worry about it. If there was going to be a problem, especially with water, it would have shown up by now.
Don't worry about it. The 920 is a great phone!!!
Well, after all this time of perfect function, I ran into a problem. The camera does not save pictures anymore. I don't know if this problem is caused by the "water incident". Nevertheless, I contacted ATT and they will replace the phone for me.

Let me point out the flaw in that argument:
Water can cause multiple damages to your device.
1. It can short electric circuits, blowing up caps and fuses. The worst thing you can do to a phone that you dropped in the water is to turn it on to see if it works.
2. If the phone was not properly dried (i.e. get all the moisture out as quick as possible using, for example, rice) minerals can remain on the circuits causing them to erode/rust faster (this also depends on the quality of the water, of course). In the mid- to long term that can lead to the device simply no longer functioning.
So just because it is working now does not mean the water will not do it's damage in a few months.

[Q] Dropped my LG Optimus G in water

Hey, so I got an LG Optimus G off of Ebay the other day and I love it. It only lasted a few days, though. Went to the beach and set it down on the sand to pose for a picture and a wave ran up over it. I had a case on and it didn't seem like too much water got into it. I immediately shut it off.
I know I should have waited longer, but since it didn't look like too much water had gotten into it I tried to turn it on the next morning. I also plugged a charger into it, which I now realize could have been its downfall.
Anyways, it's been a couple days since then and I dunked it in rubbing alcohol to try to remove residue and then took it apart and let it sit under a fan for over 12 hours. I tried turning it on several times and nothing happened. So, after taking it apart more and blowing out the insides with one of those cans of air for removing dust, I put it back together. This time, when I pushed the power button the back button led came on. It goes off after a little while and I can't get it to do anything else. Also, the water damage indicator is still white.
So, I realize it is probably beyond saving, but the back button led coming on gave me hope that there might still be something to do. Any suggestions on anything else to try and any ideas on why the back button led is coming on?
Thanks!
Okay, here's another question. Would I be able to buy another phone off of Ebay that has a broken screen or something for cheap and transfer over the internal parts to my phone? Or is my screen probably messed up too?
salt can do more damage than you think , usually the screen would remain good if it was normal water , but dicey to say since it was salt water, if you can get it evaluated cheap it would make sense , not otherwise , its already an old phone going cheap, would make more sense to get another.
Any time your phone drops in water, the first thing you should never do is try to turn it on because it could damage the internals and cause a short circuit in which the electrical components may fry.
First dry your phone as much possible and put it in a bowl or bag of rice. Wait at least a few days and then try to turn it on. If it works, great! If not then it is possibly damaged but to the point not every component is damaged. It might just be the screen or the motherboard. The best bet would then be to ask a repair person to see what is broken and if it can be repaired or salvaged for some parts.

[Q] Water Mark (Patch) on phone LCD, Need urgent help

Hi
I have been searching on this forum for various things for couple of years and never had the need to register until now, My Phone (Galaxy Mega 6.3 i9200) fell in water last week, not fully submerged, just the top of it for few seconds, i immediately pulled it out and have done the following as suggested by many in this same forum:
1. Dried in dry cloth and kept to dry for 1-2hrs
2. put the phone in a air tight container with unboiled rice for 4 days
3. put the phone in a air tight container with desiccant for 3 days
I have put some pictures and you can see the water level has gradually come down from the LCD screen and the cloud patch is somewhat gone and as you can see in the last image, that is what exists and this is not going at all, I have tried vaccum cleaner hot air for 3-5 mins but no luck.
Today i walked to samsung service center and they said i had voided the warranty which is obvious and the phone LCD replacement would cost $120 including labor, however there is one risk which they dont want to take, during the replacement of LCD, if the phone doesnt come alive, then i am stuck with a dead phone for life, I didnt agree to this and walked from there.
All the sensors including cameras work perfectly fine, no issues at all, *#0*# runs with all built-in function absolutely fine, even the battery has no issues and no bulging or no drop in performance and doesnt get heated up, so, here is my question:
1. As you can see the picture, the water level gradually came down, but stuck somewhat in the middle, will this eventually go away like the rest of the water patch or will it stick to LCD like a stain permanently ?
2. If its temporary, how do i remove the water which is in the middle of the screen? I have kept almost a week in dessicant and rice, should i continue or should i try something else ?
3. The last option for me: If this is going to be permanent, anyway to replace the phone LCD without damaging the phone, I dont understand samsung service center asking customer to take risk for water damage inspite of me agreeing to pay the money for the LCD replacement, not fair i guess....b.w all phone functionality could be lost in this case which is working perfectly fine.
so, guys pls suggest me how i can fix this, its a new phone 1 month old and i am feeling very sad for what happened....
Appreciate your replies
Thanks & Regards

did u try to show some local repair shops they will help u and do not blow hot air into it it will try to blow the water but it will again come back try to show some trusted local shops see what they say i too have faced like the same issues but sc as usually say out of warranty due to water damage and my phone flash light was continuous on local shop guy fixed it now running it fine
phone dried
@djvicksee111 thanks for your reply.
yesterday it was raining heavily and my cousin became full wet along with his phone, he then put his phone under the seat of his scooter and drove whole day, when he reached home, the phone had became too hot and what a surprise it was fully dried and no water in LCD or whatsoever and absolutely working fine.
I took this idea and wanted to try the same but didnt want to drive a scooter in the rain
so, i decided i will put the phone somewhere it is not too hot and above warm, i took a small bag, put my phone (removed battery), connected my vaccum cleaner in opposite where you get hot air (blower) and closed the bag leaving small room for air to escape, left it for 15mins initially, there was no sign of improvement, then again left for 20mins and this is what the phone looks now (see attachment).
Eurekaaaaa! the water in the phone is getting dried much faster, i am gonna try this for some more time and post here if the phone is completely dried.
