How to update to Nougat without unlocking my bootloader? - Moto Z Questions & Answers

So I have a non verizon Moto Z with this status currently:
XT1650-03
retus software channel
6.0.1
July 1, 2016 security patch
I have been checking every day for an update to nougat and still nothing. I have been reading and it is hard to tell if a lot of the methods I've been seeing require an unlocked bootloader. Could anyone point me in the right direction of a method that does NOT need an unlocked bootloader? It would be much appreciated.

There's no way since the only way to receive updates on a locked bootloader is through Motorola. You're out of luck until the release the update, I heard moto z play gets the update in March so I imagine before March or around March before we get an update

I followed this method with my Z and my bootloader is locked. I didn't have any issues with pushing the nougat ota's once I was on the right firmware.

how I can unlock my motorola bootloader ON 45.3.6 I NEED help ´pls

i need help im root the motorola photon, but not how to unlock the bootloader need a tutorial or something to help me for this last version and just like adding custom roms have given root access to the cell phone please help
If your on 2.3.5(latest OTA) you can't unlock bootloader you can only root/use bootstrap
Edit: To root search here on XDA for the Photon Torpedo method and that *should* work IIRC on 2.3.5 just fine. You can flash P-Roms with bootstrap but not full on ROMS like CM9/CM10/MIUI/ETC without having an unlocked bootloader
Confirmation.....
So just to confirm..... If you don't already have an unlocked boot loader and your on the latest OTA update (mines 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.US --> The one with 1080p Camcorder) their is no current method to get it unlocked?

No. You can't go backwards to a previous android version either. So please don't just go flashing SBF's thinking it's possible. That seems to be a trend here lately haha.
If you are on its 2.3.5 then don't try to do anything.
You won't be able to flash back to stock even if it is soft bricked as no sbf available right now.
Better stay with current rom and don't even think to mess with it unless devs will come up with some sort of solution.

Depressing news for sure. I just decided yesterday to pull the trigger on upgrading to the JB CM10 Beta as I want to love my phone again, and now I realise that I have missed the boat Luckily I have a Xoom with Team EOS Stingray JB Nightly 124 so I do still get a JB fix but it still burns.......

here is a link to moto site to unlock https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
you have to sign a waiver to proceed saying your warranty is voided and I have not tried it but it seems moto is finally stepping up.

I don't think it is a coincidence that we get an OTA that perma-locks our bootloaders, and then a month or so later Moto drops this on us. Maybe they pushed that update so that it would be compatible with their unlocking tool?? food for thought.

That could very well be the case. Personally, what I'm thinking is going to happen, is that when the Photon does finally get official ICS support, its going to be with a new bootloader that is unlockable via their new unlocking tool. Just my two cents tho

I sure hope I can unlock this thing. The only reason I unlocked it in the first place was because I had a hardware issue where it wouldn't wake up from deep sleep. I was hoping to find a fix which I did but it hurt battery life so when figured out was under warranty sent in they gave me new one yay. nonunlockablee boo. Kind of got used to the freedom of having it unlocked

[Q] Upgrading from custom Rom to Official ?

I have Night Elf kernel and [2.3.7] X-GAMER [V1.2] on my Neo.
Bootloader is unlocked.
The question is,
What happens if I try to use SUS or sony ericsson update service to upgrade it official ICS?
What is risky or has it no risk?
Depending on how you unlocked your bootloader.
If officially, then you won't be able to update it. Pcc/seus will show you error.
If unofficially, with test point, then yes you could update it. If the rom you are using have good phone description in build.prop.

No unless you use OTA update.

Service menu states i cannot Unlock my Bootloader :(

When in service menu it says
Root Status:
Bootloader unlock allowed: No
does this mean i cant ever unlock my Bootloader?
mean is it possible to still attempt with the unlock process and see if it will indeed hopefully unlock or am i out of luck?
i want to be able to install CWM Recovery so i can install a custom Rom...mostly a Stock ASOP Stock Android or GPE
at the moment i am on
Build Number: 14.2.A.0.290
Model Number: C6833
and i am not currently Rooted as it doesn't seem quite possible to Root Android 4.3 successfully
My device when i first received it was a branded o2 Carrier handset but days after receiving it the Network unlocked the handset for me as in Unlocked the handset to a Unbranded version so it will work on any Network...i dunno if this means anything to me getting the bootloader Unlocked
Sorry to say, but at the moment there is no way to unlock your BL
The best you can do is:
Downgrade to .532 (read my guide in the general section or you will lose cell reception/imei)
Root (follow LordManhatton's guide in general section)
Upgrade to a stock based rom (follow Jackie's rom thread or my instructions at #34 in that thread if not using his rom) - choices include:
DoggRom
[NUT]'s rom
Jackie099's Stock rom
monx®'s rom
StarFighter's rom
i searched for these but non of them seem to be stock android i like my stock lol cyanmod/gpe style

You will either have to live with it, or you'll have to sell it and buy a regular unlockable one. Not what you want to hear, but these things happen when carriers have a certain body part up their asses.

Dunno, but it's worth a try. I'm on O2 and mine has an unlocked bootloader. I would contact them and complain that it's locked and you want an unlocked version. I've done that in the past and since then I've always had unlocked versions.

Mine too. I just complained saying it wasn't stated anywhere that it was a locked bootloader and so they'd missold me the product. Works every time.

Difference between official and unofficial bootloader unlock

Hey, I've had my RN3P for awhile now, the wait was so long for official unlock and it didn't work for me so I unlocked unofficial. Now i'm wondering what the difference is between official and unofficial unlocked BL.
I've noticed that my bootloader seems to lock when I flash a firmware, which means I have the flash a fastboot rom to get the phone working again. Is this normal?
Also, I'm planning on updating my TWRP since I think I have a really old version, is there something I should think about before updating TWRP? Can the BL lock if I update? Also should I flash the strix CM twrp?
I looked at this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708
and found the different TWRP versions here, which one do you recommend? The safe v2 or mabe zcx?
I think unofficially the bootloader can relock itself during MIUI updates/installs.
Anyone else that knows something for certain?

Well you updated for nothing.
Now you have to temporarily downgrade back to early Oreo. After bootloader unlock, then you can update back to Pie.
Root Sticky everyone should read:
ROOT YOUR V30!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/root-v30-t3927154
Free advice: NEVER upgrade until you know root requisites. In this case you can still do the TEMPORARY downgrade back to Oreo for bootloader unlock with WTF exploit. But what if you couldn't?
You should check before updating to new OS, not after.

Same TWRP for Pie as for Oreo. V30 TWRP dev says it's stable and we're sticking with it.
See WTF instructions for bootloader unlock and root.
Read the Root Sticky, linked above. It has link for WTF bootloader unlock.
What variant do you have? Full Pie KDZ has been released for several variants, but others still waiting.
